Note: all the footage for this essay was compiled from playthroughs of Civ2 Test of Time. There was been a few releases of the original Civ 2, and the versions on the PS1 and original CD release have completely different graphics. As a result, none of that footage is in the essay, including things like wonder movies and the live action advisors. If these aren't important to you, be aware. But I...

democracies experiencing NO CORROPTION is definitely also satire... or extreme levels of naivety
the one about the settler stealing the city and then another instance preventing you from attacking the settler also seems like political satire
Never ever saw the option of abandoning a city by right click!!!!! Omg!! Was this on expansion? Only played base
Installed game after a long time, first thing I noticed is I move last unit and turn is gone, hell no!
Had no idea captured units costed nothing! Now I finally get why captured art spwcified the country
I agree 100% to the chess thing, when I first started playing civ V, I had a not so good pc, so I played in strategic mode, which is a simplified view. Later, when I had a good pc, I got tired of the normal graphics very soon and switched back to strategic view anyway. I like to know what I'm looking at at a first glance
WOW, palace mini game at F? do you rank the advisors from Civ2 at F too??? wowwww CORRUPTION AT S?!?! the mechanic that makes the game TOTALLY AWFUL and UNFUN? the mechanic that made me quit the game after two months because there's NO WAY to expand to a large empire, even though it's a 4X game? yikes!!
Corruption is precisely why you can expand to a larger empire without penalty, unlike Civ 4 or Civ 5. You might like Civ 2 though. It has corruption but if you switch to democracy, there's 0 corruption
@@suedeciviii7142 nah civ 2 you just sit on fundamentalism tbh civ 4 lets you have the largest empires of all! every city pays for itself.
i have resolution issues but whenever i do keepres=1 the game just doesnt launch. i didnt have this problem up until recently.
Btw I recently realised that if you demand things from the AI to the degree that they're furious with you, they'll (always?) declare war if you try to kick them out of your land 🫡 a bit cheeky/cheesy but hey
Great way to cancel gold per turn payments to the AI :)
There are two kinds of scientific progress: the methodical experimentation and categorization which gradually extend the boundaries of knowledge, and the revolutionary leap of genius which redefines and transcends those boundaries. Acknowledging our debt to the former, we yearn nonetheless for the latter.
Is this a quote from in game?
@suedeciviii7142 Yeah! Theres so many good quotes!
This game got me into science when I was younger. Im an engineer now!
Hi Suede, would you consider going a bit more slowly through the “wonder completed” popups and the herald messages - maybe reading part of the message aloud e g just “most advanced/powerful civ is currently X”. If you are watching live it can be difficult to catch it all when you are not the trained fast MP player, like yourself and the popup is there for about 1 second 😅 Just a small suggestion Also, I DO enjoy you taking your time to carefully consider the first plant - it is those details that makes you standout 👍
As an aside, do you do Save Game magic anymore, @suedeciviii7142?
I loved the moment where you talked about supply crawler hotkeys. It was very much a "You press the ... *checks notes* O key" - a human moment that speaks to the at times unwieldy UI.
Funny that it reads that way! But no, it's all scripted, but when I tried to speak with my usual speed and cadence it just didn't sound like I was talking about the letter? "Press the Okie Dokie" and all that
@@suedeciviii7142 I hear that! Reading scripts as naturally as possible is such a skill to cultivate. Hey, at least you're getting to the point where the slight time it isn't feeling natural it makes for some dramatic effect!
Wait a minute, I thought the Palace Mini Game was THE ultimate goal of this game. If you are not playing to build up your ultimate palace, then what are you playing this game for??! 😅. I"ve loved this mechanic since Civ 1.
Hmmm... I should play Alpha Centauri
It's cheap and I have a couple guides for it. It's the first game in the series that I'd say has all the UI requirements of a modern game.
The first time I tried playing Civ III, I installed it on my parents' outdated Packard Bell. It took 15-20 minutes to start up. My first turn, I patiently waited the ring to show up around the warrior's feet, and I sent him to the northeast. Five more minutes of waiting as the computer's fan screamed and the hard drive crackled, before he finally faced the right direction, and walked there in slow motion. It was glorious.
neat
3:00:00 I Was just playing (the OG CivIII) the other day, and the AI did the 'remove troops' and still declared war, so don't feel bad when you do :)
Also, how did the Dutch manage to plant Haarlem on the island? Unless they had the lighthouse wouldn't that be out of reach for galleys?
I'm more worried about taking a diplo penalty? But yeah, screw them.
The Great Lighthouse was in Amsterdam
when a city pop is maxed out (6 or 12), and granary full, next item on the list should always be a worker, as the pop will recover in just 1 turn
Yes, agreed. The population cost of a settler/worker in low pop cities is smaller than the cost of building them in high pop cities, and the granary works oddly around size 7/size 13 In multiplayer this is a very important concept with respect to drafting.
How hard would it be to add those elements of Alpha Centauri into Civ 3?
Some already exist in Civ 3, some could be added in the editor, some could be added in theory but not in the editor, some are just so tied into the fabric of SMAC's game design that it'd be like trying to put a square peg in a round hole
The Civ 3 map is way better than Civ 6. Civ 6 is hard to look at or actually see anything.

Nice!
Hey, I have seen your 101 tips video and in there you mentioned that one cannot get a great person if they already got one- which applies to great generals, but you admitted you are not sure about great scientists. Well guess what! I was playing yesterday and I got a great scientist and i didnt use him bcs, I saved him to use for Theory of Eveolution and before i got to Scientific Method, got a 2nd one! So I was able to pull off superb combo of Theory of evolution hurried by GS into Hoover's Dam hurried by the 2nd GS. I just wanted to share that with you in case you still werent sure about GS Cheers!
Yes, that should have been appended in the comments IIRC. Thanks for confirmation though!
Why did you put the Palace in F tier? I liked it mostly because it added some customization but I am not going to yell at you for it as it is your tier list after all and you are entitled to your opinion.
It's a completely cosmetic feature that cannot be disabled, and has annoying pop-ups. But mostly to start riots. I'll say, the game is beautiful and that extends to the palace screen
Is there an actual way to replace/upgrade units in an army?
No, they're locked in. But armies are so powerful that they never really go obsolete
If you don't wanna play just don't play
Finally a start that reflects my typical luck generating a new map, looking forward to analysing this.
I recently did a full run of all civ games, from emulated civ1, ps2 civ2, etc. Civ 3 is insanely hard. The AI stops you even on like the third difficulty lol. Meanwhile Civ Rev and the newest civ are a relative cakewalk of diety
I've played a LOT of Civ 2, but after 3&4 came out (well actually Alpha Centauri) I've never wanted to play it again. The AI was predictably obnoxious on higher difficulties - if you were #1 on the rankings they would instantly gang up on you, truce break, lose, then ask for peace immediately and if you had democracy you'd be forced to accept it. I don't want peace, I want revenge!!! I will also always clown on this game for genderbend Shaka and for introducing a lot of lazy "wonders of the world" like King Richard's Crusade.
Some people replied telling me this was a bug in later patches of the game
1.138 years in a life that lasts 77 years 😮
Not only is Blind Research on a good bit easier for new players, but it makes diplo a lot more fun and meaningful. When factions start splitting off into pacts, it creates really fun tech disparities (chaos gun anti air destroyers fighting missile equipped jets) and makes probes more useful
Agreed. And there are just so many egregiously stronger techs, along with techs that are relatively weaker but still interesting that you'd otherwise ignore
You leave your cities undefended? Your capital? You don't have at least one unit in every single city? Rookie mistake
I sent it off north to body block the Spanish (the people I was actually at war with)
Where Civ 3? I NEED CIV 3! 😭😭😭
MORE SMAC!!!
One thing I hated about alpha centauri was the map being mostly red... My default strategy was to plant forest everywhere, which is actually a decent one
You delivered <3
I also tell folks to turn off the automatic designer for units, and try creating your own if they haven't already figured that out.
Yay for heavy armored needlejet colony pods!
Its funny, seeing you describe some of the strange UI choices that Firaxes made does show that it can be tricky but having played this for 24 years I never really realised it before
People who grew up with games from the 2000's onwards are spoiled, honestly
Just wanted to say thanks for introducing me to this amazing game, I'd probably call it one of my favourites now. Was wondering if for a video you might discuss formers and terraforming, when do I plant forests over building farms? Or how do indentify good city locations? Those kind of topics and questions, or maybe something on unit design in the workshop, just some ideas!
Great ideas.
Just leaving a comment to support Alpha Centauri content.🎉
I'd love a light remake with simple QOL adjustments. But still Alpha Centauri is my favourite game!!!!!
Thanks for the video! I think a great companion to this would be on automation in SMAC. Stuff like setting patrol routes with boats/aircraft to catch early attacks, using auto-explore and saving/loading build queues. But especially terraforming. You can save yourself a huge amount of micromanagement just by knowing how to properly automate your formers and what you can do with that. Sadly I've never gotten base automation to work as well as I'd want it to (aside from saving build queues). Maybe I should tackle that again some time!
I suggest learning shortcuts, especially for formers, most are logical and then as well F1, F2, F3, F4, E-social engineering, U-Workskop. These help a lot and game is much more enjoyable when you can play it smoothly. Also Thinker mod or WIll to Power (based on thinker) have lots of quality of life in them to help smooth play.
Yeah, the "confirm odds" screen is the way to go. However I wish all turn-based strategy games could implement that screen in the way Battle for Wesnoth did - with a histogram showing possible outcomes.
