I remember my dad getting two tickets for this game as a favor for my high school classmate’s father. I had to deliver the tickets. I still remember the build up to this game and I remember the date as well! November 15, 1980! 7-0 Irish over Bama! Those two teams had great defensive units. Offensively, they were just above average.
This one really hurt. People that enjoy defensive football (like myself) can appreciate this game, the way that Bama and ND went after each other, just phenomenal. However, if your team winds up on the wrong end of the scoreboard its devastating. God bless both groups of men who fought tooth and nail for their respective schools, those that are still with us. ROLL TIDE!!!
Dan Bennett If it wasn't for those costly turnovers in this game and the one at the 1 yard line against St. Bama would have been undefeated and there more than likely an all SEC National Championship in the Sugar Bowl with I believe Bama taking their 3rd National Championship in a row.
Bama had everything but a QB that could win that year. We had a championship defense, but an offense that struggled...never could come up with a QB to get the job done. We lost two games giving up one TD--and that was after fumbling to ND at our three yard line. Oh my, all we needed was a QB.
Pretty unbelievable that the great, and he was great, Bear Bryant could not beat the Irish...6 national Championship Coach....Many of those loses were in huge spots like the 73 season where Tommy Clements threw outta his own end zone for a huge 1st down sealing the win and National Championship...Oddly Bama lays claim to that title though...? Don't know how when you got beat by the team who won it all....Woody Hayes had a great team in 73 also and is more deserving than Bama.
Remember the UPI awarded their championship before the bowl games. Notre Dame won the AP & McArthur Bowl as champions for 1973. That was last time the UPI awarded the championship before bowl games. Ironically, BAMA lost the 1974 championship with Orange Bowl loss to another Notre Dame team.
I remember all of those great games. I actually think that Bama played too tight in those NC games in the early to mid 70’s. Those ND teams were pretty awesome too. The 1976 game was the real heartbreaker to me. It was on a very cold day in South Bend. Bama had a play on the goal line the here Jeff Rutledge could have run, or pass time a different guy (Pete Cavan I think). However he through into double coverage and Jim Browner picked him off.
Woody Hayes huh talk about a bs championship osu claims I think it's 1961 osu went 8-0-1, BAMA went 11-0 osu only played 9 games but yet claims a championship BEAR BRYANT also beat Woody Hayes head to head 35-6 something like that later in the 70s
Wow, thank you, how great is it to hear Keith Jackson
I love this type of football, def, and running game. It's great hitting on every play.

@@kennethfutch5372 This was the 1980 season. Arizona St. rolled the Trojans in '78.

Great. Have not seen this game. Go Irish!

As I'm sure you know the NC's were handed out before the bowl season back then. That's how.

You want National Championship claims? Penn State 68', 69', 73', and 94'. The 94 team had the most prolific offense ever. They were robbed!
