The state of Georgia is going to explode the next time this happens! As a Georgia sports faithful, I’ve only had the opportunity to relish a single Braves World Series. I’m hungry and I know that all other Georgia fans are too!
I'm the biggest Walker fan.you will never see another Georgia football championship .if you lived 200 more years it will never happen. The best running back in college. A quarter back that completed ONE pass.and a player on Notre dame that did go out of bounds and getting to play the 7th best team in the country.never again
I was there and on the field after the game. Standing next to Herschel the crowd surge was heavy. Dooley grabbed Herschel's face mask and asked him if he wanted to go back in. It was such an intense game, a great victory and probably shouldnt have won. Belue completed one pass the entire game but was at a critical point that kept the clock running, the kick-off the two return guys failed to field and one of the Kelly boys recovered at the one. It was just meant to be Georgia time.
@@estebanmorales6568 There were seconds to go in the game....the fans were massing on the sideline. I was within listening distance with 77,000 fans - most UGA fans - roaring!
He was hit by Dave Duerson, Chicago Bears. I ran into Dave in the early 90's at Navy Pier in Chicago by chance and he said it was the hardest hit he had ever been involved in college OR Pro....Hersch was a man among boys
I was a Sophomore at UGA during this magical season. Walker, and the fact that UGA didn't make a lot of mistakes that season, won it. They weren't great, had a lot close calls, weren't dominant. Florida should have beaten them, but they had one of those seasons. The 2012 team that narrowly lost to Alabama in the SEC championship game, was a better team.
Notre Dame should not have even been playing in this game. The bowl organizers screwed up and invited the 9-0-1 #2 ranked Irish to play top ranked Georgia in a game they thought would be for the National Championship. Notre Dame accepted......problem was they had a game remaining at USC in L.A. Notre Dame lost 20-3!! So the Irish drop down in the polls and 10-1 3rd ranked Pittsburgh gets stuck playing a virtually meaningless game against 8-4 South Carolina in the Gator Bowl!
ugh, this is tough to watch for two reasons - #1 cuz the Irish lost and my folks were there, #2 I wish college football was still like this, and not the corporate-run, over-commercialized pseudo-NFL it is now. But thanks for posting.
Absolutley! No TD or sack dances, refreshing! And back when teams always wore "their" uniforms. Now, sometimes I don't even recognize my own team (Washington)!
@Gregory F. Murray hey hey hey that's just about enough of this owned the Bear talk now. LoL I'm a Bama fan as you can tell I agree that the game is way different and not necessarily in a good way I miss the football all the teams you named used to play they would hit you in the mouth and run right over your ass there was no tip toeing thru the tulips it's was a men's club no dought
I visited my cousin at Notre dame last Xmas and the students were having a pro abortion rally and bitching how the government wouldn't pay for birth control pills! Smh.
Not sure u would call them midgets some of those lineman were 6'7 a few were 6'5 they were definitely thinner and could run a lot longer. High fructose corn syrup more availability of all kinds of foods definitely changed a lot. Weight training and sports medicine also was no where near what it is today. Just a different time all together.
@YourLocalBluntFriend Incorrect. They actually have been recognized as National Champions 6 times(1920, 1927, 1942, 1946, 1968, and 1980). However they only claim 2 of those(1942, 1980). College football national championships is one of the most debatable subjects in the history college sports due to the fact that so many polls named different teams national champions. If you listen in near the end of this video they basically talk about how it is hard to pick one team. Georgia also have the 2nd most SEC Championships tied with Tennessee at 13. Not too shabby. Dont hate.
This is tough to watch for me it's been fourty years since georgia won the national championship n blondie number one hit song call me was number one on the billboard
Well I think the FREE-MASONS are still around now, as far as influencing SEC teams in concerned...but please don't ask what I mean by that since it will sound a bit too weird! Either way, these "secret" organizations/boosters attention seems primarily focused now on BAMA. But for a very brief time in the early 80's, UGA was able to get some of those top "recruits", but still only resulted in ONE national championship. Nowadays, it seems Bama couldn't screw up if they tried, and Saban is such a hard ass coach that he at least keeps those young kids focused, who are basically gauranteed to win with all that talent.
Man these guys are small! Herschel was a great back but it must be easier to run over linebackers when the biggest they got was 225 pounds. Even the All-American DE Scott Zettek was only 225 pounds!
Nathan McDonald Exactly. During the beginning of this game they refer to Notre Dame's offensive lineman being larger than average. Notre Dame's five starters weight was between 240 to 260. Now days that is small compared to Georgia's offensive line. Georgia's smallest starter weighs in at 318. During 1981 they made a big deal about William "Refrigerator" Perry because He was over 300 pounds. Now days 290 to 300 is average, And is what they want and look for in a lineman.
Pre PED's. All these linemen were healthy and also lived past 50 unlike the obese lineman of today who all die prematurely. People in general were slimmer and heathier before the obesity crisis. Look at pictures from anytime back then and you only see 1-2 overweight people. And even they were smaller than half the average females of today.
Small only because they didn’t have 70 lbs of fat rolls hanging off their bellies. These guys were chiseled. Go look at the Miami-Nebraska 1984 Orange Bowl and look at the Nebraska offensive line. Chiseled like Adonis
So gay that the university of Georgia uses the battle hymn of the republic (the song that Shermans men sang as Atlanta burned to the ground in their wake) as a fight song. Such disrespect to the southern heritage.

I think the most unfathomable fact that Buck Belue passed for 1 of 12 for 7 yards! Walker's greatness can never be overstated.
Thank You, Herschel your a role model for athletes, fathers, and all human beings!!

All I want is to see another one before I die. I was 17 when this game was played.
I hope you were here to see us win in this last year!!
Just watched the LSU game. How the game has changed. 17-10 v. 44-41. I like the old game better.

Jeff Burrow I was there too as a teenager. What a memory but Roll Tide Roll!
So Dooley asked him to go back in after the game was over?? If you were there, which is doubtful, you must have been drunk.

Herschel over the top 25:50 you're welcome. Most beautiful play in history!
Good call! But that may have changed in Indianapolis three months ago

Come on 12-0 give your team credit.
58 year Georgia fan. I agree about the 2012 team. That was a heart breaker.

One pass completion for Belue. Amazing.
My goodness, that hit on that RB at 15:45! Whew baby

Who do you root for when ND plays Boston College? Must be tough choice
While it was NewYear's day for everybody else,it was Christmas for the BullDogs!
I only had one less pass completion than Nuck Belue in this game and I was only 9 years old at the time.
The announcers talk about how big these guys are. They are midgets compared to todays players.
Those midget 260 lb linemen are in better shape and more chiseled and don’t have 60 lbs of muffin top and belly rolls that today’s linemen have.
Buck B completes one pass and becomes a legend off H.Walker's coattails. Imagine if Mark Richt had a QB at Georgia only complete 1 pass.
Jeff Allen .. Norris Brown dropped a TD pass. Also, Belue ran well and had no interceptions. Belue was a leader.

This was a typical Vince Dooley coach offense. If it wasn't for Erk Russell and His defense this game would have gotten away from Georgia.

The Irish would have won if not for their second half mistakes.
And those 4 turnovers.
Some truth to this statement, just look at that stats. The Irish dominated but had costly mistakes and missed opportunities while Georgia didn't.
@Thomas Lane yeah they went straight downhill because of it too. Holtz pulled them out of mediocrity.
