Glad you went with the 3m. As i said it's expensive but completely worth it. No way are they coming off. Hope the info helped and you are happy with it. I've just done it again on my new purchase. New plates makes a huge difference in my eyes to any older car.
Yeh can't wait to get the show plates in the future and use the Duel Lock 😬
@@DriveWithAndy Just one other thing for any one looking to buy this. 3m double lock is not like original velcro where you get a metre of each type, the hook and loop parts are different. 3m double lock clips to itself. 3M DL is also plastick velcro is material. In short if you buy 1m length of 3m Double Lock, you only have 50cm usable as you cut two lengths you want then stick them together.
which 3m Velcro should i get?
Looking good. I have 3d gel badges on mine. Yesterday ordered 3m double sided tape as I will hopefully be sticking on colour coded door strips as the current ones a unpainted plastic. Hopefully it holds up
Just be careful with your application as its pretty thick stuff (about 2mm per side so stuck together protrudes 4mm or so. Great for number plates. You might be better off with 3m foam tape - think i used the 12mm width. Its thin, grey and has a red backing if you look for it. Much thinner so better for your trim by the sound of it. And you'll also have no probem with it sticking firm. Used it on my front and rear badges to stick them on. Its also a lot cheaper than the 3m double lock.
@@djmandrick yeah that's what I'm worried about. Hope the strips sit flush against the paint though looking at it it's very slim
@@zaink7037 think it was less than a mm or around 1mm so i reckon tha'ts def your better bet. If not go with the 3m double sided, that would def do it too but I think the foam one will work better in the harsher conditions of being on the outside of the car. I've tried allsorts over hte past three years and 3m is my go to brand for anything adhesive now (or their headlight restore kit is the best and easiest one i've bought one out there) and Im yet to be anywhere near disappointed with any of it.
Is this all good to take the plates off and put back on when you come round to cleaning it with the pressure washer etc? Not had any loss of effectiveness from them being removed and reapplied or have you just kept them on when cleaning
When I had them they worked great yeh. Trick to getting them off is to prize from the bottom up. Then just align and press snap back on
Dope video.
I have a question though.
What strength of Dual lock tape did you use? (170, 250 or 400) How has the 3M dual tape held up since installation?
I want to know too
My only issue with velcro is that someone could rip your plates off. Unlikely I know but would bug me. I suppose it's no different than using tape/sticky pads though. Plates look spot on by the way.
Yeh it's a risk, but as you say a lot of plates, even my other ones, are stuck down so if someone wants them they will anyways haha. Or even screws are not safe if someone wants them. Least this way I can take them off for photos and my future show plates will be nice and easy
The DVLA now prefer plates to be not be screwed in, due to the end caps maybe not being the right colour. So they can get that VRN correct when sending fines out.
@@CdotPoppy What they prefer doesn't really matter though if it's not a rule surely?
@@Nyle95 imagine enforcement if it was a rule, stop checks to remove screws. It's personal preference on how you want to attach said number plate to a vehicle. It's just the new guidelines with the new BSAU145e plate coming in September that all plates will be fitted like that from new. I had drilled, sticky pad them now they got a holder, but with the new plates coming, maybe double side tape them in the holder.
Did you have the option to have the standard length number plate rather than the shorter ones? Also, these 4D number plates are ok if they are stuck on, but with my Fiesta number plates they are screwed on. It may be difficult with screwing them on because of the raised letters and the screw needing to go half way through the letter
Yes you can choose the standard size. I would assume your current screws do not go through any letters or numbers? As the new plates should be the same. But may be worth sending them a message. Failing that it may be best to stick them down like I did
Don't screw them and stick them like this video shows then
Hey Andy, a year on, how have you found the adhesiveness of the 3M dual lock? Holding well?
Yeh no issues at all. The front reg plate has been swapped for a grill lock system now as had front bumper smoothed. But rear has been great. Show plates on and off
Thanks @@DriveWithAndy !! I actually have 5metres of regular Velcro at home. Reckon that might be good enough?
@@jeconomides not sure if can recommend velcro as not sure how well it holds up. The dual lock stuff Is strong. To remove it you have to pull from the bottom or top to dislodge it before it fully comes off. So much more secure yet easy to remove when you do it correctly
How did you get rid of all the crap behind the rear plate brother?
Pretty sure I used sticky stuff remover but also things like big and tar remover work
@@DriveWithAndy much appreciated
Surprised you didn’t demonstrate pulling the plate off once it was attached.
That’s what I came here to see :(
How is the duel lock holding up? Has the plate ever fallen off?
You know that's true yeh. Guess at the time I didn't want to pull off with them just being stuck down. So with duel lock to pull off your reg you have to pull from the top or bottom first to unlock it then it just peels off
@@DriveWithAndy
Did you ever have an issue with the plate coming off whilst driving?
How good was the quality of the sticky side, did it stay stuck to the back of the plate and the bodywork well? Did the heat or rain make it peel at all?
@@rajdattani1507 absolutely no issues. Been stuck on great. My front reg is now in the grill as the bumper got smoothed but the rear is strong. Taken off for shows and pics and never let me down
@@DriveWithAndy
That’s great!
Thank you for the feedback, I think I’ll have to give it a go
Hi Andy, I am looking to do this to my car with my new 4D plates but there seems to be loads of different variants of 3M Dual Lock about, could you please link me to the specific one you bought? It looks like it sticks well to the paint as well, is this still the case?
Hi, yeh works a treat. Just make sure to leave it stuck down for a few days or more before trying to pull off as it bonds better.
To remove the best and safest way is to have you fingers on say the top and thumbs at the bottom and pull via the bottom. Hope that makes sense. Here is the link to the dual lock:
3M Scotch SJ 3550 Dual Lock Hook and Loop, 1 m x 25.4 mm www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00D6OI99G/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_PMNJ9TFYKS2NJHPY0NS5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
How is the 3m dual lock doing? Any problems with it after a while of using it?
Non at all, it's a great product. Best way to remove is to pull the reg plate up from the bottom, equal each side and pops off nicely. Then align and give it a good press and it snaps in place
@@DriveWithAndy still going strong through wind rain snow etc?
Is removing and putting back on simple enough without bending but still not so easy they can drop off.
Also the recess is not that bad really, still rather the shorter plate!
@@ad_182_uk yes no issues at all. To remove you need to pull/pop it off via one side. I start from the bottom and lift up
What’s the durability been like after 11months mate have they ever fell off?
Been great, car gets washed least once every 2 weeks and letters have be er fell off and the dual lock has been strong. No issues and removed rear reg loads. Front reg is different now as got smoothed front
@@DriveWithAndy my bad mate I meant the durability of the 3m duel lock pads .
Look mint
Thanks man 👍
Did you get the 3mm 4D plate or 5mm 4D Plate.
I am pretty certain nine were 5mm as they have a good depth to them
But I can measure them to make sure
Sound mate cheers
@@gurmanmudhar8861 so sorry I didn't get to reply, mine are 3mm
3mm is nice and subtle imo good choice.
Looking to use the 3M tape for a Euro front plate here in North America. How’s it holding up after two years?
I no longer have this as now use @magnaplates
But these were great. Never fell off, on strong yet with the back easy to remove which made it great for show plates
Why didn’t you just buy a plate like RF06 ANDY or something private plate, and then use them for shows and road legal? Instead of Your original plate
I do want private plates but first I can't find any with either Andy in or my number 5 or ST etc. Plus it's the cost, I can't afford them at the mo even if there were any appropriate ones. These are inexpensive and future proofs for future show plates
Hello what spray did you use to take the old backing off?
Think a combo of sticky stuff remover, very hot water and gar remover
Is this legal now?
Yep these are legal. It's reason I got them so wouldn't have any issues
@@DriveWithAndy i have a 71 plate car, im not sure if they would allow this. Do you have any information on that?
I recently bought a private plate with 71 on it also and im doubtful. I’d love to get your style of plate but im not sure if it would void warranty due to legal confusion
@@shaggysiva5552 this is what the company told me when I was checking. Hopefully this helps "The 4D plates are still going to be legal from September, as long as your plate has the company name & postcode with BSAU marking at the bottom, the September change is mainly for the coloured plates"
@@DriveWithAndy thank you! I hope this applies to 71 reg cars
Metal plates were 2020... 4D is 2021!!
Exactly 😊
Fantastic way to advertise how to get your plates robbed. Risiculous idea. Looks smart but yeah...no
@@EMJ754 if someone wants your reg plates it will not matte how they are attached. Screws, tape, velcro, magnets, clips
