Mitchell Steindler That’s OneButton’s showroom! We’ve shot a bunch of stuff there; they’re a high-end smarthome integrator in NYC and good friends of ours. onebuttonlife.com
just wanted to say you're doing an excellent job with these Apple reviews, unbiased, honest reviews for apple products are something the verge has been missing for a long time. kudos.
Honest? Not true. Apple plans to include new features to its recently unveiled Apple TV 4K device though future tvOS 11 updates, such as support for object-based surround sound.
Bill Buffet I don't care what they plan to include or what comes in the future, this device is on sale right now so what it can and can't do when people are spending their money right now on it is what matters.
Darren Persad He is not a reviewer at all, he is a specs describer. He doesn’t even give a glimpse about the real product experience. I miss The Verge fro, 2011 2012 with Topolsky
On the prior reviews he was even more of a fanboy than I could ever dream of being, now he's a bit less biased, but let's wait for the iPhone X review hahahaha
The Verge is challenging the youtube review community with unbiased opinions on seemingly pretentious devices. Really impressed with the quality as well, so keep it up!
I'm glad companies like "The Verge" exists. They're able to educate us, about how and why some product features do or do not work by speaking directly with the companies like Apple in this case. It's easy to rant about the Apple TV 4K not supporting UA-cam in 4K, but once you understand why that is, it throws a completely different light on the subject. And as always nice cinematography and well phrased presentation.
Nathan Budd Objectivity doesn’t mean not liking Apple products. The reason The Verge praised Apple products earlier is because they were really solid, nowadays that’s not always the case. Stop correlating people who agree with your opinions as “objective” :P
I am fully aware of what the definition of objective means. My "opinion" is based on these facts. Solid or not, the devices had faults. And the Verge didn't highlight these as much as they did on other devices. I'm writing this on an iPad right now. It's a solid device, but it has faults. The Verge used to praise every apple device, no matter what... (charging the Apple pencil with it sticking out of an iPad...). Now they're a lot more balanced on their reviews. I like the devices, but I want to know about the faults as well as the strengths when weighting up whether I'm going to buy it or not.
I think their reviews are better now overall but a lot of people had problems like with the Series 3 Apple Watch review basically being a test of if you can get a cellular connection in the middle of the ocean.
You mean in the sea whilst surfing? Like Apple did in the video introducing the Apple Watch 3 LTE? If they show it off in the ad, then it should be able to do it.
The review is not good. Apple plans to include new features to its recently unveiled Apple TV 4K device though future tvOS 11 updates, such as support for object-based surround sound.
This guy is a great tech reviewer! I like how he's actually unbiased, unlike that one blonde white dude with the glasses, his attempt at "objectivity" always fails and we're left with a subtle Apple lovefest.
I don’t see why there’s no web browser or multitasking available yet. Seems like you could have a lot of potential to multiple things at once while watching your favorite show or sports team. Hopefully it’ll be available in the near future.
"The real problem is that there is actually nothing on the market that supports Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound together" - hmmm, not correct, Chromecast Ultra is supporting this with VUDU now. Google has it for $69, Apple not for $179.00.
5:02 I have no clue what you mean by this? What do you mean it's just a box connected to someones TV and that "isolation" is holding it back? Have you been smoking or am I just really stupid?
As of February 8th 2018 you can get it for $140 by prepaying the $140 to DirecTV NOW. That's four months of DirecTV now and a brand new apple TV 4k for $140.
Just bought one of these and I have 1 problem that’s driving me crazy. I have the latest update and have HDR set to match, but the home screen is all blown out. The color looks awful. When I switch back to 4K SDR it looks perfect. I thought the purpose of match was to prevent this from happening. Somebody please help!
I find that you can apply this review to all of Apple's current products. From the iPhone vs Samsung debate to Mac vs. PC. At the end of the day just get what works best for you. I'll probably buy the new AppleTV 4K. Thanks for the review it was really well done.
All I want to know is if it’s going to get some exclusive games that take advantage of the new processor. If the old Apple TV can play the same games, then, I don’t need this version as I’m not hooking it up to a 4K display.
Most interesting Apple TV 4K review I’ve seen so far with one big caveat. Your main point, Apple’s not supporting UA-cam 4K spec is lost st the end. The video editing slowly mutes the audio at the end so it’s nearly impossible to hear clearly.
I really hope they fix that you tube glitch soon. Was planning to buy this product and would have been annoyed because of course who doesn’t love UA-cam. Still better than the amazon tv though. I think I’ll wait on this until it gets upgraded.
Great honest review! Really enjoyed this and the call out about VP9 and Google and Apple struggling to make deals with each other was the perfect ending!
Hello. I just wanted to say that I really like how The Verge puts the videos together, and also how you put your ideas together. I can really feel the quality
Major correction. The question should be why hasn’t Google implemented a 4K version of UA-cam on the new apple TV. They don’t need any agreement with Apple to update their app. Netflix & Amazon have had no problems releasing 4K versions of their apps on Apple TV.
My $25 Roku express works well for me. 1080p HD Netflix Hulu and sling TV work with zero lag. I'm almost ready for 4k but not yet. I'm still stuck in the HD era.
Can i just stream movies and series from netflix, hulu, HBO,.... without paying for them If i buy an apple TV? Or do you still have to pay like 7.99 per month for all those things?
Glenn Goris Good question, am picking up my Apple TV tomorrow, John Lewis, £139, gulp, will find out soon enough. Had enough of watching stuff on my i phone 6S.
Great review, thanks for looking at the specs that matter. I for one won't be buying until they at least sort the displaying of lower resolution content out. Pretty sure I had a Roku a while back that did the same thing trying to display 1080p at 4K and making a hash of it. Leave the scaling to the TV, they are usually way better at it.
I’m really happy TV companies and now Apple are helping 4K HDR become the new standard making it more affordable for consumers to get into the 4K HDR experience. And by the way Dolby Atmos is coming in a future update. It’s one step at a time people right now Atmos speakers cost an arm and a leg like 1% of consumers own them. So really it’s only for the enthusiasts the majority of people should not care about Dolby Atmos being there on day one and it shouldn’t be a deal breaker.
The Verge, your video production quality is amazing... But what's up with the loud background music? I can't turn up the volume, since the background will drown out the voice of the reviewer. :(
You said in the video that there aren't any devices on the market that support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision HDR. If i'm not mistaken, the nvidia shield does support both.
Your review was excellent. Thank you. Even someone who is not up on the latest 2017 technology understands your points. It seems like the pink elephant in the room that no one is identifying is the marketing concept of brand obsolescence. Basically by being "technologically behind" Apple has the opportunity to release about 4 more versions of Apple TV. at $179 each time.
I love how he complains about the price difference between Roku and Chromecast but mentions the A10X processor (from the iPad) is inside and can view 4 video streams at once. Forgive me, but does the competition even do this?
I see "Apple" and I immediately think of the hassle of Itunes and other imposed restrictions, the elevated prices and I immediately think "this is not for me."
The main reason that makes me consider the Apple TV is the TV App. I really fell in love with it on my iPad... Prime Video is so unnecessary tedious, i love Netflix but there's just so much that dos not show up on the front page in and out. Just last Week i watched "Split" on Prime ONLY because i was looking at it in the iTunes Store and later the TV App suggested to watch it for free on Prime. Thats some pro consumer stuff going on. If the TV App mixes together iTunes, Sky Q, Prime Video and Netflix as great as it dos on the iPad this is a classic Apple selling point of stuff just working more streamlined. And that's stuff the average consumer uses, gets used to and will pay for while the web nerds debate gigaflops and Ram amount. You'll hate this when you read it because you are a web nerd, but its just the reality, normal people don't care that much, normal people just want s**t to work.
Get an android box. Load Cyberflix which is free and you won't need Netflix or any other streaming service. Has the latest/oldest movies and TV shows. Havnt not been able to find a title I'm after. Livenettv free app also gives you so many live TV channels. Disney, animal planet, espn etc
The reason UA-cam is not 4K is probably because they haven't updated it - and they can support the new HEVC format as the VP9 is not getting traction outside of google products and doesn't save compared with HEVC. Finally the old H264 can be deprecated soon..
That apartment is off the charts. JUST LOOK AT THAT COUCH!!!

Only reason I came to youtube from his site was to write a comment like this... holy ****... what an insane room!
Meh
I was just about to comment on the rustic look. Its amazing
Unlocking its full potential will destroy the universe
😂😂😂
I'm surprised The Verge doesn't upload their videos in 4K HDR.
Tragic
haha ikr and he was complaining why youtube not in 4k on apple tv
Savage!
Touché, someone just got burned!!
same. At least it's in 60fps ^^
Apple need to make an actual tv
It would be for probably for $4000

They’re very biased. He was blaming Apple for others mistakes. Typical.
Forget reviewing apple tv go ahead and review that apartment 👌
This gentleman is the best reviewer at the Verge, bar none!
Darren Persad He is not a reviewer at all, he is a specs describer. He doesn’t even give a glimpse about the real product experience. I miss The Verge fro, 2011 2012 with Topolsky
Isn’t that guy you ??
*YOU LOOK EXACTLY LIKE HIM!!*
He is the owner of the verge ! Lol look it up
Best guy to review Apple Products!
That's our Editor in Chief, Nilay Patel!
+The Verge yeah ...iam also indian..
Would you prefer a hot girl or an old guy?
Well done Nilay for saying so clearly we want the Apple TV to have UA-cam 4K HDR
I am liking this guy more and more.
Kicstar V right !
Careful there !
Was just thinking that!
Kicstar V same
On the prior reviews he was even more of a fanboy than I could ever dream of being, now he's a bit less biased, but let's wait for the iPhone X review hahahaha
Straight up honest reviewer! He needs to do more reviews.
Im surprised that The Verge are doing seemingly unbiased Apple videos nowadays
There's something about this guy. Not quite sure what it is, I just love watching his reviews.
Its nice to see somebody do some critical reviews of apple for once.
Man this is an amazing video!
Fair, on point and the cinematography is just stunning!
Would you only keep this guy for all apple related reviews?
Adnan Abbas he is verge’s editor in chief. So he does all the top end products.
Nilay is our Editor in Chief and might object.
Lauren Goode did Apple Watch 3
Lauren is cute but Nilay is ugly

Verge is just doing a great job of exposing Apple's new lineup.
Can you please update this; its been 2years.
What? I can't play .mkv 1080p remuxes with truehd audio on my Xbox one s, let alone Atmos... So how do you get them to work on yours?
This is why Apple needs to make their iTV product.
Nice to see The Verge being a bit more objective on Apple reviews nowadays.
Used to be too fanboy-ish, but now they're my go to for reviews.
Nathan Budd Objectivity doesn’t mean not liking Apple products. The reason The Verge praised Apple products earlier is because they were really solid, nowadays that’s not always the case. Stop correlating people who agree with your opinions as “objective” :P

I was literally getting ready to click purchase on this and thought I'd better watch a review first just in case. You just saved me $180. Thank you!
Nilay is the apple of reviewers....awesome reviews from the verge.
This is how real reviews should 'punch'.
I decided to make make a black notch cutout for my tv because it’s such a great design choice. Now I can have the all screen experience on the tv.
Nice hardware and a lot of potential.
Looks like the rumored new Fire TV is the box to get, this Apple TV would have been great if announced last year, but now it's just behind

Does Apple TV only work if you have existing cable?
Where’s your review in the box? All your video explained was that it didn’t support the resolution that you want.
Is it worth upgrading or should I stick with my 3rd generation box?
I’m getting Apple TV tomorrow
That works for all Smart TV's right? I mean does it have to be from a specific variety of brands?
theres a Ton of updates since this was made...worth looking into
I really don't know why you didn't get the BIG tv lol that thing is massive!
When is an Apple TV going to be an actual TV?
I fear never but it would be epic
I really appreciate this video because you have such a relaxing, mellow personality
I realy like this guy. He has great reviews.
Good thing we made him Editor in Chief
What size tv is in your living room, that’s a pretty awesome tv
This needs to be updated...they now support most of these things.
I love how he complains about the price difference between Roku and Chromecast but mentions the A10X processor (from the iPad) is inside and can view 4 video streams at once. Forgive me, but does the competition even do this?
Sounds like a great device, because all the things you mentioned that set it back, I don’t care about, or don’t use. Thanks.;
Is the youtube app still in HDR even if it doesn't have the 4k ultra high definition playback?
I see "Apple" and I immediately think of the hassle of Itunes and other imposed restrictions, the elevated prices and I immediately think "this is not for me."
Best reviewer on the Verge!
Very good, honest and unbiased review. Well researched and rich in information.
If I buy this, do I have to pay for a extra subscription?
You should do a re-review now that this supports Atmos as well
Apple never disappoint

You didn’t even talk about the main apps people may use this device with NETFLIX prime video. Also Atmos now works on this.
Does the new 4K box still only support 1 wireless headphone
The reason UA-cam is not 4K is probably because they haven't updated it - and they can support the new HEVC format as the VP9 is not getting traction outside of google products and doesn't save compared with HEVC. Finally the old H264 can be deprecated soon..
Xbox One S had 4k hdr over a year ago with UA-cam, Amazon, Netflix and more offering 4k hdr. Over ... a... year... ago.
You'll take whatever we give you and like it. -Apple
Isn't VP9 open-source and royalty-free? Do they actually need a deal w/ Google to implement it?
