No matter what anyone adds or removes from the game, SCH and MCH will always be unpopular and mocked. Neither class gets any respect because other classes can do what they do better. MCH plays so well tho and SCH I loved because it's so easy to survive playing it. But it should have had a new range AoE a long time ago. Running in for an AoE is dumb for a mage.

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical 2 роки тому

@@kokayinewsome9308 WHM does the same thing with Holy, though.
I guess I largely agree. Though I love both MCH and SCH for the class fantasy. Machinists (and the MCH Job quests) are basically the embodiment of the British Bowman and the American Second Amendment/Minutemean/militiamen. This idea of the "common person", employing "baser" tactics and weapons instead of the elegant arts of war in use by the nobility - who are privileged to have years of training time and tutors over their youth to master them - because they want to be able to stand and defend their people anyway.
In the middle ages, the British basically did this with archery, and the US has for over 250 years with gun rights, but the core concept is the same: That the little people have something they can do to be effective in war to protect their people. With a dash of steampunk on the side. :D
The Scholar, on the other hand, is a combination of scholar in the student/seeker of knowledge sense, and a battlefield strategist who became leaders and officers. Individuals known for their combination of mental acuity and magical aptitude, specializing in healing but also masters of asymmetric warfare and outside the box thinking. They are (along with Arcanist) a somewhat literal take on mathmagicians in FFXIV's world, with a touch of military training and rank on the side.
Then you add in that they work synergisticly with their Faerie partner (another reason I hate the Dissipation skill...) and that their magic is even more tuned towards protecting than simply healing people after they've taken harm.
Taken together, these are probably my two favorite classes in the game in terms of lore and class fantasy.
And I honestly like how they both play well enough, I just dislike how SCH's kit often seems at war with itself, meaning it's much more difficult to play than it NEEDS to be, and how MCH is so ping dependent and needs to either do more damage OR offer party buffs like NIN/DNC/BRD do that make up for their lower personal damage. MCH either needs to stand up towards BLM/SAM or it needs to get utility added like DRG/MNK/SMN.

    • @kokayinewsome9308
      @kokayinewsome9308 2 роки тому

@@SubduedRadical I agree, I love MCH as my 3rd main, part of my holy trinity. NIN, SMN, and MCH. I dont think they should be so hated but people hate them because, from the outside looking in, Square cant seem to figure out what to do with them to make them more unique or cool when compared to SAM, BLM, or WHM.
Personally I would make SCH better by giving it traps and reflect spells to counter dmg and paralyze foes. And I'd give MCH new gadgets that give it lots of unconventional attack AOEs or patterns to show why its unique and more than just the hard hitting shooter class with no utility.

I am really disappointed with this... they had a chance to do so much with it, like having two fairies at lvl 90 like the Tamer in Rappelz Online, maybe having one that focuses on healing and the other on damage while reworking more skills to be cast from the pets. Instead we still have a useless and clunky pet that's just really cool thematically but has a useless spell that's never good in a pinch; not to mention a buff that should've been given to the BRD.
Maybe the outrage will be so big they'll rework it mid expansion and give it a MNK treatment. I just see Sage as being the better version of Scholar in every aspect.

I don't understand why they need to make the fairy so slow and unresponsive. Your minions that follow you around react to your movement faster than the stupid fairy. If they can make the minion follow right next to my ass, surely they can figure something out for the fairy. Why does it only start moving when you are 7 yalms away from it? Why does embrace have a cast time? Making embrace instant cast would solve half of the problem that the fairy have, what is the limitation that would prevent them from making such changes? It's an effective class for sure, but it's also one of the most frustrating thing to play when things doesn't go right

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical 3 роки тому +1

Other than Embrace (and I agree with you, btw), I would wager it has something to do with non-combat pets don't function in combat. What I mean by this is, they have no abilities or health (combat pets USED to have this, and so likely still use the same coding) or positions that matter, so they're probably handled client side. Every play with someone else (maybe in the same room or on a stream) and you move and see your non-combat pet move, but on their screen, it lags and is actually in a different position for a few seconds?
That doesn't matter with non-combat pets because their cosmetic. So it following you on the client side while the server takes a few 100s ms to update isn't an issue, since they have no relevance.
Conversely, Lily needs to update her position on the Server side FIRST, then send that visual information to the clients. That way, if you order her to use an ability, the SERVER knows who all to calculate it hitting, which is necessary in combat.
      .
Short version: Cosmetic things don't matter, so they can be on the client or server side; combat things have to be server side, which means there's going to be a bit of lag before the visual information is sent to the client. This is likely why that lag exists.

    • @mackv.4179

@@SubduedRadical I am very well aware that the delay exist because fairy coordinate is handle through server. What I don't understand however, why isn't this a high priority in the list of changes. As you said, AI that are handle locally can react much faster, so they could make the fairy location be local. Truth be told, Sch is the only person that ever pay attention to the fairy, I doubt anybody would ever complain about how "The Sch fairy just spazz out during the mechanic and I didn't know what to do" It will look funny on other people pov, because the fairy and it's skill would be visually desync. But that doesn't matter, as long as the scholar is the one that is aware of the pet, that is the most important part.
Obviously, I make it sound simpler than it actually is. If it was this easy they would have done it long ago. However, they don't ever tell us what is the problem, or why they can't do it. They know that it is a broken AI, that's the reason why SMN pets is just aesthetic now. So now we only have sch who have this unique problem. And sadly, they never invite any Sch main to interview YoshiP for these questions, sometimes it truly feel like they are just avoiding any question regard sch.

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical 3 роки тому +1

@@mackv.4179 Well, I'm saying the reason it HAS to be on the server side is the server has to determine "Is Eos within Embrace/Fey Blessing/etc range of the targets?"
And so that's probably why it works the way it does.
Imo, one fix would be to have Lily move faster and not wait for you to get 7-10y away before she starts moving, and another good idea would be make Embrace instant cast and all her abilities castable while moving (like if you use an Instant on your character while moving). This would mean she'd never be "animation locked" in casting an Embrace when you move, for example.
Because of the way combat works, I THINK her position HAS to be server side because of targeting range calculations. But I do believe that they could do the fixes above and it would make her WAY more responsive.
And yes, I agree this should be a super high priority and I have no idea why it isn't. Maybe they want everyone to play Sage at first, like how they took BRD buffs and gave them all to DNC, only giving some back to BRD after BRDs all started switching mains? It made DNC look super popular, though!

I wish you'd brought up that the main issue with SCH isn't that it's "weak" -- it's that as far as I know, there is no other class whose kit is constantly at war with itself. You brought up the faery gauge up briefly, and that's just one example of what's supposed to be a major part of our kit that ends up being contradictive (can't use fairy skills without breaking it, can't use it on Seraph -- and now is even less useful w/o Blessing), among at least 2-3 other major conflicts that make the class feel like you're better off avoiding most of the skills unless you're desperate. And then there's the whole problem(s) with the fairy.

It's better that Fairy Gauge is being used for only Fey Union. Fey Blessing was too simple and weak compared to Union. By using Union, you'll make Blessing unusable. If you use Blessing, you've increased the number of charges you need to fully charge Union by 1. It's not like aethercharge. It just stepped over itself too much.
The +10% MAX HP buff is a percentage that will always heal 10% HP AND boost the healing you do them by 10%. Allowing you to creating even bigger barriers to brute force mechanics with.
Temperance reduces damage taken and increases the healing WHM does to you. Expedient is a 20 second sprint and reduces damage taken. Unlike Temperance, Expedient allows you got get to where you need to be faster. The faster you get from point A to B, the faster you get to go back to attacking. The faster you get to where you need to be, THE FASTER YOU WIN.

Still, nothing super flashy, and pet control still seems to be unchanged. Fairy commands need to be instant, no matter what... You press the button, and it does the thing without any kind of delay, or ghosting. THAT's the buff SCH needs.

yeah but it had a weaving button unlike WHM, if you spent an aether on drain that would be a potency gain, there is literally no reason to use ruin now because it will always be a potency loss, you should always be using broil+drain. in comparison WHM is a lot stronger now because it can cast its OGCDs without potency loss. so SCH did get better, but WHM got A LOT stronger because of it.

@@theexiledones1 but it helps WHM a lot more. that is actually a change WHM really needed, because most of thr WHM heals were very low priority because of the huge potency loss when used out of one of the natural healing windows. what made WHM really boring in hard content, and a pain in the ass to play with WHM as a co-healer.
while for the SCH spending a aether to create a weaving window with ruin+drain was actually a very small potency gain. the balancing being that drain is an ogcd, so whenever you had a window to use it, aetherflow would be off cd, meaning you could use your aether to heal without losing much. but now that you can weave it betweens broils every ogcd heal that uses aether will be an 100 potency loss.
but the WHM ? most of its heals were low priority because of the lack of weaving windows, but now that it can weave any time without losing potency and it gained a very strong ogcd that heals in AOE, all of its heals will be very high priority
all that to say that yes, it made the SCH stronger, but it also made most of the problems with the class more apparent and indirectly nerfed it by buffing WHM a lot more.

SCH will continue to be useful for organized Savage and definitely for Ultimate raiders, but to the rest of the player base/community, it's probably going to become the least played healer. It may not appear as such on charts, but that will be because of SMN's getting it as a "free" 90 that they never touch.
Still powerful - still clunky. Like moving a large, empty box through your house, it's not that the box is broken or weak or heavy, it's just awkward, clunky, and obnoxious to maneuver through doorways. That's SCH.

Excog is the one ability that I think should have it's Aetherflow cost removed, and just be a regular 60sec cd.

Speed Boost is going to get so many parties killed; and I await the vids of people wiping their groups by accident (on purpose).
That being said; the rest is pretty dire. More Broil-ing, Art of Slap the Floor 2.0, and the Fairy Gauge still feels like an unfinished mechanic. Sad to also hear the initial positive news on the Fairy AI may have also been a placebo. Hopefully its something that they can work on; but its been a problem since SCH's inception, so we'll see.

Blessing stepped on itself too much to keep its gauge cost. It was just a simple and weak AoE heal.
And Speed boost isn't going to get parties killed. Most players don't run on a timer like they're too mentally challenged to LOOK WHERE THEY'RE GOING. Have you even used Lost Impetus before?

Experienced parties are going to love the movement speed buff, and will use it to their advantage. Even without thinking the devs will be designing content around the party having access to it. Fey Union is the only HoT in the game that can extended while it's active. At full power it will last 30 seconds and up to 48 if you've used aethercharges during its use. Additionally you can turn it on at any time. You seriously want to fuck yourself because managing one of the best HoTs in the game is too much for you!? Nobody said anything about ghosting. If you use Blessing, you've weakened Union. If you use Union, you've made Blessing unavailable. The cost of Blessing is added nothing to the gauge. It just took away from it like Upheaval and Onslaught did to WAR because the resource gain was unchanged. It was a simple AoE heal and a weak one at that.
Ghosting is the result of the player having done something to prevent the pet from doing its actions. Such as mashing dissipation before Eos uses whispering dawn after you pushed that button. Stupid idiots just go "DURRR I NO KNOW WHAT HAPPUN DURR". They're mashing buttons and dismissing pets too fast is what happened. What did they think was going to happen?

SB SCH isn't coming back - they don't want DPS focused healers.

The effect is the Faerie will sit on your shoulder (like it does at the end of the LB3 animation) and whenever you order it to use abilities, they will be instant, no movement, and centered on you. So Lily will just be cosmetic at that point. When you toggle it off, it returns to the normal state so she can be used as a turret or otherwise as she's currently used.
I hate Dissipation now, so this would be a better use for the hotbar slot, imo.

I've played enough WoW to see AOE Sprint and actually be excited. People in 14 are really not appreciating how nice that is in an organized raid setting when people need to move/adjust quickly for a mechanic, and with 14's "scripted dance" nature, I'd expect it to be good here.
It's pretty sad how many people are on the "Sage is new so Scholar is dead" bandwagon.

I think it can be useful in certain situations, yeah. In a well practiced group, absolutely. But for those of us who mostly play roulettes with randos, it is disappointing to see that it is our level cap skill. Everyone else got lazers and bigbooms, and we got second sprint.

FF14 raid design is too homogenized for AOE sprint to be as good as it is in WOW. In WOW basically every raid has at least one fight where you need to book it across a giant room or else you wipe, FF14's small circles aren't comparable. Blizzard is also much more willing to make mythic content unclearable without specific classes than SE is with Savage lol.

All my wow refugee bros know all about druids party movespeed buff and how insane it is.
Only thing holding scholar back is how its trying to be 3 seperate themes at once and not really unified in scope

Being a strong class is good especially to fit in the meta but most people would rather look flashy and cool and do a little bit worse and I think that's going to be a breaking point for a lot of people that aren't fully decided on if they want to play sch or sage.

    • @hiddenmaster6062

Not to mention that most loud SCH are to fucking stupid to understand how they're job even works. They just want it to be WHM (stupidly simple) or BRD (DoTs).
Meanwhile Sage will be dropped because it'll be too busy. They'll find that it has been rigged in such a way that using healing spell is inevitable, more so than it is with the Scholar.

1:00 - Sucks they didn't do anything else with gauge, but I am glad they removed Fey Blessing from needing it. It was stupid to have an ability that uses 3 Aetherflow's worth of gauge but ALSO shares a CD with Aetherflow anyway, and is nominally weaker than every other AOE heal you have despite having arguably the longest cooldown and resource cost, collectively.
1:40 - Not to bust your balls on this one, Haps, but the tooltip says "of A party member" not "of ALL party members", yeah? So you can use it on yourself or any ONE other party member. Though I'm wondering if that's a typo? The way it says "or self" makes me think it's single target. Though I am curious if the Additional Effect is on the SCH themselves or on the specific party member only, like Convalescence used to work for PLD. I get that there are probably some synergies with other tanks, but considering it's single target instead of AOE will limit some of its utility.
2:20 - So speed and a 10% mitigation/light Sacred Soil but on the players? The 15y radius seems a bit short. I feel like this is something Ultimate and probably some Savage raiders will love, but that most other players won't really see as useful other than the 10% mitigation for the party. Considering non-Savage/Ultimate content will not be designed around having specific compositions, and if no other healer has a similar buff to bring to the table, that encounters will not be built around the move speed buff being needed. So it will mostly be a novelty for very high end players to min-max with, but most of the player base will just use it for the mitigation or to sprint between pulls. Honestly, I see this being most useful - the 20 sec duration is a long time - for SCH's to pop at the start of 4 man dungeon hallway pulls. Letting the Tank more quickly pick up and position enemies while also taking 10% less damage and outrunning the first packs in the chain, thus not taking ANY damage from their hits. Though, of course, you'll have to let the Tank know you're doing it so they don't waste their Sprint since it doesn't stack with Sprint anyway. Sort of like the way Tanks use Sprint+Arms' Length in current dungeon runs.
3:40 - I feel like the shield potency buffs are to bring it in line with Sage and try to actually put the BARRIER back in Barrier Healer. That said, it'll be nice that SCH actually plays as a shielding healer again and that the shields won't feel quite as paper thin, I guess? And more frequent Deployment Tactics will be...nice.
    ...but that's the thing:
These things are "nice", but don't seem to majorly fix SCH's main underlying problems. Pet AI/ghosting still seems to be a thing, SCH still retains the state I've called it all of Shadowbringers - "Powerful, maybe the most powerful of the healers, but CLUNKY, and its kit actively works against itself (e.g. use Dissipation then hit Seraph or Fey Blessing and see what happens, or hit Energy Drain and then Indom/Excog when you only have 1 stack of Aetherflow left)" - it seems to have not really addressed that clunk and counteraction of abilities. Having some Galaxy Brain stuff can be nice, but when your kit works against itself and is just clunky to deal with, it's obnoxious. It's like moving a large but empty box - it's not HEAVY, nor is it weak, it's just BULKY and obnoxious to try to wrap you arms around and maneuver through doorways.
That's how SCH feels to me - it's not HARD, it's just BULKY and obnoxious to try to wrap your arms around and maneuver through doorways. :)
    .
Which is sad because I like SCH's class fantasy as the educated healer and battlefield tactician with a healing partner (I hate the skill Dissipation with a passion) that uses shields and mitigation fields to reduce damage and bolster their allies.
I also love that SCH/SMN is a (the only...) dual class in the game so I don't have to level a second Job for the other role, something that actually has a LOT of utility to me, personally. Playing since 2.3, at the end of each expansion I had only a few Jobs at max level until ShB; ARR: WHM, SCH/SMN, HW: PLD, WHM, SCH/SMN, SB: PLD, WHM, SCH/SMN, RDM, only in ShB did I expand it a lot to PLD, GNB, MNK, NIN, MCH, WHM, SCH/SMN, AST, BLM, RDM...and most of that was me wanting the Archmage title and just deciding to go the rest of the way with BLM. XD As much as they talk about removing that feature and not wanting to add it to any others (for years, I've dreamed that GEO would be added as the DPS counterpart of the CNJ class...something playing like Enhancement Shaman in WoW where it builds up some stacks with attacks then can instant-cast CNJ's spells like the Stone line would be pretty cool, imo. Melee/caster hybrid reverse of RDM...), but to me, that's a positive feature, not a detrimental one, and I wish more Jobs had classes they shared.
But much as I want to love it, SCH is just not as streamlined and FUNCTIONAL as WHM and AST are to me. Both just FEEL better to play most of the time than SCH, and that doesn't look to be changing. SMN looks fun but...I think I'm going to finally have WHM win the fight I've had since ARR: Which healer will I main. These changes just aren't sufficient to bring SCH to where it needs to be. I think it's where it needs to be in POWER, it just needs its mechanics adjusted to not be so "giant empty box" clunky and annoying.
...which means I won't be bothering with SMN, so RDM can be my DPS main (it's not just being easy, I like it's aesthetic, I hate DoTs, and I like that it doesn't eat ALL MY HOTBAR SPACES AND THEN SOME), so then it's just a matter of picking PLD or GNB for Tank and which of MNK/NIN I'll eventually drag to 90 to make sure I do all the role quests (along with MCH, of course)

I think Scholar is... Fine. I've played it since I started in Heavensward, it was the first class I started with in the game and I love the absolute shit out of it.
Like it does it's job, and the changes are good and seem like they'll be useful, they might even be very powerful and top tier under the right circumstances. The changes to the cast time of Broil is also pretty major, with SCH's OGCDs it's going to be very busted in a good way since they can weave in a lot of utility very fast with the new cast times. Being more mobile is also good, and less pet jank is good as well, even though I still feel like the fairy has a lot of annoying little problems that need to be ironed out.
Scholar is going to be fine, it'll probably still be a very powerful healer.
    HOWEVER.
The class still feels ridiculously disjointed, it feels like they have all these neat ideas but nothing to really like solidify an identity; a fantasy if you will. Look at any other class and you can sort of see what they're going for, Redmage is a fancy show off who wants to show you just how much magic from every type of magic he can do. Warrior is an axe wielding berserker who will wear you down before you wear him down. Ninja is a fleet footed shadow warrior who blasts people with their naruto magic and stabs them with daggers all in the span of a couple of seconds.
But Scholar? Like I used to feel like Scholar was the tactician of the group who would come up with plans and strategies to make sure that the team succeeded and performed at their best. The one who not only had information on all the enemies but the other classes as well and knew just what to do to make everyone perform at their best. But as time goes on that just feels like less and less of the case, sure they have skills that sort of emulate that fantasy but the way you play just does not convey that at all where as you can play any other class and sort of feel the fantasy that they're putting out. A lot of the skills you have don't work together and the ones that do usually work together in such stilted ways that you don't really have a good path to utilize them. You constantly are pressing multiple buttons to do what other healers can do with just one or two buttons, and the class just has no flow or style to it.
I like comparing most classes to a genre of music, like I see White Mage as Indie Folk playing these sort of comfortable wooden instruments, I sorta see Astrologian as a kind of spacey new wave genre like something Daft Punk might have played, and I used to see SCH as a sort of Jazz, smooth but in your face as they sort of style on you. I still see SCH as a sort of Jazz type class but now the Jazz is Freeform and performed by people who don't really know what Freeform is but sort of heard it a couple of times before and can kind of do it if you listen with only one ear.
I dunno, SCH is probably going to be solid, I don't doubt that it will. It has been pretty solid through SHB, it was solid in SB, and HW as well, there's never really been a point that the class has been unplayable, it's just that lately the class has felt clumsy and frustrating to play and these changes haven't really done much to alleviate the feeling that the class has become a sort of clumsier nerdier version of it's former self.
It's also very disheartening to see the other healers get all these flashy cool effects and none of our skills seem to ever seem to get a very fun visual look to them, the capstone is an aoe sprint with some damage reduction. Like, if you really think about it does that seem like it should be a capstone ability? Shouldn't the capstone be something that looks awesome and impressive, something that really puts makes the other classes feel a little jealous that they're not playing scholar? Like I'm sure the Sprint will be great, I'm sure that there's gonna be some strats that really utilize it, I'm sure that it'll also save a lot of lives for people that might be out of position when an aoe starts to go off. I don't doubt that it'll see it's use... It just doesn't impress me that much.
I feel like that one Scene in the Charlie Brown Halloween Special where all the kids are talking about all those cool candies that they got and the camera pans to us and everyone's like "What did you get SCH?"
    "I got a sprint."

Exactly my thoughts, the jank in SCH has reached astronomical levels with all of the skills that have been removed, changed or consolidated the class doesn't has an identity anymore, half the skills contradict the other half, some skills disable others, and such and much.
The only way to unfuck the class is doing a complete rework, hopefully in 6.3.
