For those in the comments talking about my CSM campaign where I advocated for the opening of the gates, you've intentionally left half of the request out. I wanted the gates open to allow counter-play AND the Triglavian gate guards fixed to be like their Highsec counterparts to compensate. This would allow players through but put them at a major disadvantage if they were not Triglavian aligned. This is the same gameplay for any other region of space if you are an outlaw or negative with that local faction so it's not new tech.
CCP, in classic fashion, opened the gates but did not fix the gate guards. The Pochven Triglavian gate guards routinely attacked Triglavian aligned players and were never fixed. This prevented us from patrolling and guarding our own space as our NPC guards would attack and kill us at random. We couldn't fight back as that would lower our standing with the Triglavian faction. This was a confirmed bug and CCP had to refund nearly a hundred ships to our players as a result. Sometimes it took over a month to get them back on our side but external groups would get their ships back in hours to days. CCP stated they would spend the quarter on Pochven. All they did was open the gates and perform no other improvements.
To put this into context for non-eve players, imagine if you were playing a game like FFXIV or WoW and your city guards randomly attacked and killed you and when you died you dropped half your gear and the other half was destroyed. Putting in a support ticket could take up to a month to get your gear back and until then you got nothing. Fun experience, right?
You can read the original and entire request here: forums.eveonline.com/t/vote-maldavius-csm-16/305730

      Haha! Set'em straight, brother.
Loved to hear the story of your journey in Eve. Can relate to it, though from another angle. I played for 9 glorious years, always part of one small corp or alliance, trying to stand up to the big boys. At some point the devs issued their plans about making the game more accessible for 'the small guy', and then rolled nothing but changes that helped the large empires maintain their already existing territories -- further gutting the chances of small alliances getting a piece of them. All this while churning statement after statement that it wasn't the case, despite small alliance players calling them out on it. In the end, it was the two-faced nature of the devs that got me off of it too.
Turns out the large empires hold the devs hostage with threats that they'll have their players leave the game if they dont make changes that benefit them. Damn shame to see this, because no other game offers what EvE does.

Shit you're Maldvius? I've heard of you in-game. Damn, it's a been a while since I played Eve. Used to run raids with UA but this game can literally be like a full-time job. Could be great fun if that's what your into (and I was when I was single) but it's not something I can commit to as I get older. Especially for middle of the night ops to defend your space. Fact of the matter is, over thousands of hours in Eve, I've never had these issues, and I've only met one dude out of hundreds thats had AN issue. The devs are greedy, they are biased, and they play their own game, but unless there are issues that more than one unaffiliated faction experiences, it's not getting fixed nor is the player getting helped. I know it sounds like shit, but keep in mind, players in Eve are all unhinged. If one dude from faction A says he has an issue, it's not getting followed up on. If another dude from faction B says he has the same issue, except faction A and B are on good terms or are allied, issue gets ignored, becuase they might be just fucking with the devs, or trying to waste time, or exploit something, or get an advantage. Now if two dudes have the same issues from 'opposing' factions? That's real shit.

Only in this case it's worse. Instead of playing make believe with your friends where everyone has equal "power" to suggest what the "reality" is, devs are godlike entities within the context of the game world, they can summarily dictate what the reality is. It's a tacit expectation of players that devs will not abuse that power to benefit themselves in the game, especially in a game that is supposed to be a big sandbox with player driven storylines and politics. The whole point of which is to let players feel like they have a real impact on the game world just like if they were 7 again playing pretend with their friends.

If the entire EVE playerbase would just stop spending money on the game, then the devs would actually care about the game and not pull an EA with Apex where they make it a shopping simulator with a side of buggy, broken, barely playable mess.

Over, and over, and over, over many days. I thought, "There must be more pleasant ways to bang my head against the wall than this..."

I was used to that attitude from CCP, it's just wormholes didn't have issues like that, the few that did exist CCP actually cared enough to fix.
A good example is when CCP was going to change a module to keep it from being exploited. It would have had SERIOUS consequences for us. They said they'd fix it "soon" and we rioted. There were a lot more wormholers than triglav enthusiasts, it took them something like 2 days to give us a module to fix the issue. I served with Thor during those final days, and he was the best Alliance leader I've seen in 18 years of playing Eve. The reputation factor is when I quit playing. I was stuck with negative Edencom standing, limiting my mobility in high-sec and now the whole reason I worked tirelessly to gain Trig standing was useless. The main reason I found Pochven engaging was it gave us a little sandbox to play in where you had to earn your way in (weeks of grinding standing, and real consequences for having it), couldn't build more structures (real consequences if they were lost), and capital engagements were highly limited. I hated getting hot dropped and prefer smaller ships for PVP. With one "minor" change, CCP destroyed all that made Pochven engaging for me and left me without the ability to fly in high-sec without grinding for a month or more (in space that was now open to everyone). I still pop into Eve every now and then, but it's never been the same for me.

Where the MC is the central character the MMO revolves around, just packed full of things noone would ever want in a real multiplayer videogame: Busted overpowered unique classes only one person can ever get, while the unwashed masses have to suck rocks and be a permanent underclass with no hope of advancement. And of course every game would have a royal class of early nolife adapters.

My experience as a new player last year:
Devoted weeks of my life to a corp (that had already an year of existence) that was growing and moving to a new, more dangerous sector.
Fast forward those weeks, after we grinded like mad for the corp, the founder says that we have a huge target on our backs and thus we are moving back, but he will arrange transport, so we should move all our holdings into the corp.
After days of logistics and everyone putting everything in, he reveals the snare, locks everyone out of everything, does a rug pull and leaves a message. In the end, it was an year-long planned rug pull so he could have enough wealth to be set for the rest of his game-life. After that me and other new players got kinda tired.
I tried playing for some days, having my own goals and everything, but it was not the same as playing with a group, and while i missed the group play, i was too burned out of the complexities, politics and danger that involves PvP between corps.

One of the biggest turns offs of EVE is that it is marketed as the ultimate PVP sandbox, but the end, once you reach "The Zone" where everything makes sense and you've succeeded in building something that matters, you realize that the main conflicts in EVE aren't PVP, but Player vs CCP. The devs are a faction in the EVE metagame, for better or worse, and they are certainly *not* neutral regardless of how they may claim to be or may actually be trying to be.

After supplying and commanding many fleets in the off-peak times during that war, I settled in Kino, the system at the point opposite the side Stribog inhabited. During that first 2-3 months our income came from killing NPC ships that spawned on those wormholes. The NPCs in pochven were notoriously broken but were our only source of income besides the dreadsites. Then the devs later made a change that made the NPCs not fight unless there was a player there with them to save on server resourses WITHOUT FIXING ANY OF THE PROBLEMS THEY HAD. This broke them further, and this includes the NPCs in the dreadsites. From randomly deciding you're an enemy to "sleeping" until the first ship in their group is destroyed. Randomly becoming to an enemy to a triglavian fleet was a problem. Since retaliating in any way meant a significant hit to your standings and likely a loss of access to your space as you described.

I was a line member in Stribog at the time of the burning. It was hell, but it was also mid Covid and a lot of people had a lot of free time. At the time, it was a nightmare. People in the alliance who were still working were taking time off work to defend timers, real life relationships were suffering, much sleep deprivation was had. But I gotta say, looking back, those were probably some of the most incredible months of gaming I’ve experienced. This may just be the nostalgia glasses talking but social experiences and shared struggles like that in Eve makes the game feel like what every other MMO dreams of being. Well-said. EvE is not a traditional game, as it is the only MMO that was not created by gamers. There is no handholding or instant dopamine rewards every five seconds like the current games industry has become - it's one of the last games where your actions have consequences. The downside is that it can take a lot of commitment if you want to attempt empire building or player organization. It takes a lot of space work in the games mechanics to be successful in those things.

Well. Eve had a weird history in who owned it. They started out a small company. Then the bubble leading up to 2008 happened and a Icelandic billionaire bought them. Then the bubble burst and he lost everything. His share went to another hedge fund in the selloff. Who sold those to another hedge fund. And then Pearl Abyss bought them. Every time they got a new owner things got worse. By the time Thor was playing the game was basically done. All the big plans had crashed a decade before in one of the selloffs when the hedge funds demanded money to pay off the acquisition price.
The weird billionaire days were Eve's best. He didn't know what he was doing or demand anything and just bought things to own them. So the devs could actually spend the money they made on things. The game is a shadow of what it was. It's not in maintenance mode in the classic sense. But it's in maintenance mode. Has been for awhile.

Ah, EVE, I used to play that years ago. Until the Devs decided I was playing wrong. Me and some friends had a sweet setup with carrier logistics. We would load up our carriers with maxed out haulers and load them up with drone region drops and whisk them to empire low sec space. It worked great, we could haul something like 130k m3 each, and we could not be stopped because we were flying carriers and had maxed out the skills required, so if someone tried to intercept our cynosural pilot, congrats! You now have to deal with 3 fully kitted battle carriers. We charged 20,000 isk per m3 and we always had full loads, it was great. Then CCP decided we were playing wrong and make it so haulers stored in a carrier could only carry ammo, and then released jump freighters, which did what we were doing, but way, way shittier.

Either way, if the system was set up in such a way in any other site, like DED's or WH's, it'd be patched, but clearly the devs had some ideas against Stribog, probably because they were peeved that most of playerbase were not getting access to this content they had worked to create. EVE devs aren't the best when it comes to dealing with player behaviour that doesn't match what they want. The first case for that is probably the dispersed endless gatecamp where devs literally spawned in assets to destroy player ships that were camping a gate to access part of the highsec, and after the camp reformed once the fighting stopped, they used developer access to disperse the camp by teleporting players to various parts of space, often hours if not days of travel away from the area.
So basically emergent player behaviour that doesn't match what the devs want for the game will get devs work against it, up to and including using devtools to force players into complying.
