Helpful! Just did mine in about 15 minutes time. Saved me from spending $300 at the dealership!
Awesome! Love the sound of saving money! Thanks for using my video to take on this job. Much appreciated Benjamin and make sure to subscribe!
Thanks for the videos! Dealer wanted to charge me $500 for both. Took 30 minutes to DIY (including beer and watching your videos step by step)
You lost me at beer......lol. Awesome! Now thats saving money. We usually charge 1.0hr which is about $120 plus the parts. (1/2 hour each filter). Glad you knew better then to tell them yes. Thanks for finding this video and for commenting Eugene. Make sure to subscribe
good video - i do have to say "thanx" to the engineer who designed the filter drains to run onto the front and rear diffs along with down the full length of my arm!
+tubbytommy Thanks for watching. Yeah....I have to take the trucks around to detail and wash everything off the best I can so that the customers don't smell the diesel on the front diff every time. Longer drain hose would be great for sure.
+tubbytommy Don't forget to subscribe as well. Thanks again
I just did both filters this morning. The front isn't too bad, I just slid another piece of vinyl tubing over the short stub, to a drain pan. But the engineer who put the rear filter over the driveshaft needs a swift kick in the family jewels.
Big help, thanks! I wish your videos made it to the top of my search instead of the professional UA-camrs that are attempting this for the first time…
Thanks for the video. I did both of mine today with no problem. Saved me money and that’s the biggest part. Appreciate it once again.
Your welcome and thanks for watching. Nothing like saving some money and being able to work on your own truck. Make sure to subscribe.
Good Video ... so far this has been one of the better videos on changing fuel filters on the Ram 6.7
Thanks Brian. Just did one on the newer 2019 that you might want to check out....better quality video lol. I appreciate the kind words and make sure to subscribe.
thanks for the video,
I'm getting a new 3500 Cummins 2015 this week and I will be doing most of my maintenance.
thanks again.
David you are awesome man! You have no idea how helpful these videos are Brother!
Great Video! I enjoyed the step by step explanation process and the added information. I'll be watching more or your videos to make sure I don't screw up anything before my attempt.
Thanks for the cool feedback. Its always great to get peoples thoughts on the video and to hear how they help. Make sure to subscribe and have a great weekend
Your welcome for the feedback. Gotta give credit where its due! Your speech delivery is excellent while sharing your expert knowledge. I'm a subscriber!
I give credit to lots of editing and lots of retakes lol. Thanks for keeping up with channel and for having subscribed as well.
glad you have the video, Dealer wanted 420 to replace both filters.
Ouch! That sounds a bit high. None the less.....you searched and you found this video. For that I say thank you and now you will be able to tackle this job again and again while saving lots of money. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
Great video :). I'm about to tackle both of my filters and I don't anticipate any problems. I do have a question though. If you are replacing both filters, should you start the vehicle after installing one filter, and then do the second? I was just curious if it takes longer or is it more difficult priming the system if you change both filters at the same time. Thanks for you help and your videos are outstanding .
I recommend priming both at the same time. Its really not a big deal....on some you can turn the key on for a few seconds and then off and repeat a few times so that it doesnt take as many tries when cranking. Otherwise you should be okay. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe!
Back when I got my 2016 ram I was out traveling, and needed to replace my fuel filters. I'm not the best at this stuff, but I've worked on a lot of small engine stuff like mowers, and weed whackers along with traveling on an old diesel school bus with some friends, and helping my buddy replace a filter on it. Anyways I knew it was a pretty simple repair, and that I could do it if I needed to, but I was really paranoid about fucking up my first big boy purchase, and voiding the (useless) warranty. So I decided I'd go to jiffy lube since I couldn't find any local repair shops. First one I went to looked at me like I was nuts, and had no clue what a fuel filter was, and I shit you not tried to sell me air filters. Second one I went to said oh yeah well do it, and an hour later told me they couldn't get the fuel filter off, and that it was too tight, then tried charging me for labor, third finally got the job done (father and son run jiffy lube), but I had to go find them the filter lol. Watching you casually loosen that sucker off there made me crack up. My baby is at 200k+ miles now, and other then a 10k$ repair bill for a faulty scr system @50k miles, a lengthy battle between the sketchy dodge dealer shop that said it was covered under warranty, the warranty itself, and the dealer who sold it to me going to bat for me it hasn't had a single issue. The bill eventually got dropped so the shop that tried to fuck me didn't even get paid for the parts. I only got a couple more months left before I don't gotta worry about mr repo man either which will be great with all this covid shit.
Thank you for sharing your how to videos. Very informational and helpful. Thanks again!
That was a great video on part of my problem, I "accidentally" put gas in my tank, when i realized what I was doing, I shut off the engine at the gas station and had it towed home. Is there an easy way to drain the fuel tank so I can flush it, or should I take it to the dealer? I don't what to ruin my engine, but hate to waste a ton of money if not necessary. Thanks again for the video
+Edmund Q Morning Edmund.....email me at david@motorcitymechanic.com and I will help you further.
Hi David, off topic question. What does recall 67A do to our trucks and should we do it ?? TY
On a 2016 ram 3500 on dashboard came out replace fuel filter… is it just one? Or both at the same time?
Hi first off thanks for your videos you have been a big help. I have a question for you I have a 2018 Ram 3500 with a 6.7 l engine and I've already changed both of my fuel filters but upon changing the front filter at the recommended interval it was brand new looking crisp White can I go any longer with the filter under the hood as long as it looks white and clean as long as I keep changing the back one. Also I use my truck for work and what happens if you go past 0% for the fuel filter and oil filter change indicator does your truck shut down or does it decrease your engine power thanks. I work with my truck and cant get to a location to get those changed and don't want to get stuck on side of the road LOL
When the time to change oil and fuel filter messages come up.....it will be just a message and will not cause it to eventually not start or leave you on the side of the road. Personally I would replace both fuel filters every 15000 miles no matter what it looks like. Its cheap insurance and can prevent fuel related issues. I wouldnt go more then that as far as miles. Only changes I go with 7500.
@@MotorCityMechanic thanks for your reply. I appreciate your help and all your videos
@@Tony-rs1cv Your welcome Tony!
Very good video. I just subscribed. A couple of questions; does the O ring used on the drain housing come with the new filter? Also how does turning key to on-off several times fill the fuel filters or best to actually start the engine?
Morning. The new filter assembly will come with 2 orings. One for the filter to housing seal and the other for the water in fuel sensor/water drain. Reason for bumping the key in the start position is that it causes the lift pump in the tank to run for a few seconds which helps speed up the filter filling with fuel.
Great video thank you. Do you know if there is a way to add this rear filter to a 2012 2500?
Thanks.
There are aftermarket kits that I have heard others talking about, I dont know anything personally.
@@MotorCityMechanic Sounds good thank you and thank you again for all the informative videos.
Thank you for posting, great vid!
Your welcome Chris and thanks for your time you spend watching and for the comment,. Make sure to subscribe
You said this video is for 3500, 4500 an5500. I have a 2500. Is the set up on. 2500 similar enough to apply to this video? Thanks for the clear and effective videos.
The location is different....it will be above the rear driveshaft. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.
My 2017 ram 2500 has a fuel filter next to the engine under the hood, one under the driver seat almost, and the rear one right in the center of the bed, at the back side of the tank.
Thanks for the Video ....Hey one thing please use gloves now with Diesel ....Reason..... I am a petroleum technician and we are using a really nasty Biocide now in Diesel to kill this Algae issue everyone is having , it's pretty much in all the Diesel now , very very bad stuff . We have to use a hazmat suit just to put it in the tanks . Just FYI , thanks for all the videos
Thanks for the insight and warning. I will certainly keep it in mind the next time for sure. Make sure to subscribe!
Good review. I have watched others of yours and they are all very informational.Thank you.
Thanks for watching. I plan on doing a tool review on the rear filter water drain removal. So keep an eye out. Thanks again and make sure to subscribe !
This video along with the front filter change saved me like $300+. By far the best video. This maybe off topic, but do you have a video of cleaning a Diesel engine bay?
Many thanks for the kind words. On cleaning.....I use a garden sprayer or a spray bottle with simple green and spray what needs to be cleaned. Then gently spary it down with a garden hose to remove all the cleaner. Never had any issues.
MotorCity Mechanic ok! I don’t need to cover anything right?
@@_ThePsychoRaven Nope.....just spray only enough to clean and you will be okay. All connectors have weather tight seals.
thanks for the filter wrench tip
Your welcome
2- BeeR Job 🤠 NICE VIDEO 👍
😂 for sure!
Will it void warranty if you change fuel filters yourself instead of dealership?
Not at all. You can do all you own maintenance. I recommend keeping all receipts to prove that you did if that question ever comes up. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.
What if that plastic breaks? What is the name of that part? I can’t find it and mine is destroyed 😬
i subbed and will be coming back to make sure i dont screw things up while trying to learn
Appreciate you subscribing. Make sure to check out my other videos as well....there are plenty more
Looking for your video for changing he fuel filter under the hood. Do you have a link to it? How often should the fuel filters be changed on a 2015 2500 6.7?
+Brad Pennington Here is the link to the video..... ua-cam.com/video/BRuVuERzZ8k/v-deo.html . always feel free to select the playlist feature. I have a playlist on the 6.7 that shows a lot of videos. Its recommended every 15,000 miles. You truck should have a digital fuel filter monitor in the cluster screen menu. That's where you have to go to reset it as well when the message comes up. Thanks for the question Brad. Make sure to subscribe if you haven't already.
Thanks again amigo
Your welcome
Any diesel fuel additives you recommend?
nice video. thanks im changing filters today
Juan Aldrete Thanks for watching and for the comment. Thanks for the kind words. You shouldnt run into any issues if you follow both the videos on the filters that I have. Help spread the word by sharing these videos with other people when you can. Also make sure to subscribe! Thanks again
Is this something I could add to my 2011 Ram 3500 6.7?
Very Good Video Sir Mechanic
Your welcome! Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe.
I had the oil changed on my 3500, today. They changed both filters. 27 000 miles. 625 can$ (or 500$ US) They changed one of the filters before that... Do you think it is reasonable, or my dealer is making money with me?
Wow.....ran away as fast as you can. You can order both filters from Geno’s Garage for around $120 plus one one labor which is around $100. So round $220-$300 at the most. Anything more is you being ripped off. I say order your own and save a few hundred dollars. Thanks for the question and I hope you think twice before letting them do it. Also both filters get done at 15k miles. Make sure to subscribe
I thought I heard you say you put lube on the new gasket if so what did you use? Changed mine a few times on my 15 Ram 3500 and its a bitch getting the back one off. Do you recommend mopar filters i had a vacuum leak with an Amazon China one that wasn't fun.
My bad its a 17 Ram 3500 i have.
I have a 2014 2500, over the rear driveline, possible to relocate to this location?
I personally dont know of a relocation kit. I can see the splashing everywhere being a pain when draining and removing but not sure its worth the effort to relocate. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe
another great video on showing you step by step thank you these videos are awesome man save some money more money in my pocket for me in the family I really appreciate these videos thank you
Thanks Mario. It means a lot that you found and watched the videos. Don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already.
David,Just watched your two videos on changing the fuel filters, great job! I tried to grease my 4WD driveshaft on 2016 2500 Ram and purchased the needle fitting to attach on the grease gun. I cannot seem to get a good seal when I try to put the grease in. Videos I have watched shows grease coming out of the back of the seal when full. No luck for me.
I actually have tried two different needle attachments, the opening on the end is a little larger on one. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Mark

Great video subd. You used the channel locks backwards haha thanks for the vid got me a 17' 2500 ctd and I want to do as much as I can on it myself.
Emmanuel Garcia I catch myself doing that all the time lol. Thanks for watching and if you follow these steps you certainly will save a lot of money.
MotorCity Mechanic I will thanks again!
Your welcome Sir!
How do you get the rear sensor clip off. It is not intuitive.
So I got a diesel yesterday 6.7 2014 ram 4x4 message came out on my dash water in fuel drain filters. Does that mean you have to drain the filters or replace them
frank soto Hey there Frank. You need to drain the fuel at the filters into a clear and clean container and see how much water comes out. If any comes out I would replace both filters. Depending on how much....you may need to drain and clean the fuel tank. The most important think for a diesel is clean fuel. You don't want to have to spend thousands of dollars due to contaminated fuel. Could be a sensor issue or actually water so look at what was drained to see if water is present. Make sure to subscribe Frank if you haven't already.
I sure did subscribe and thank you for replying
Feel free to ask any questions anytime. Thanks
Ive changed my filters many times on my other 4th gen but this other one I bought the whole gold looking thread came out with it and it’s still attached to the filter. When it’s supposed to be up on the housing instead.. this happen to anyone else before??
Thanks partner. You just saved me $200 from having a mechanic do this.
So after installing both filters all you have to do is try cranking the truck and you will not get air in the lines right?
Calistro Rodriguez There will be air in the lines but the system will bleed the air out with no problems. Imagine it being like a gas engine......the fuel system on the 6.7 common rail Cummins works much the same way so no issues. Just takes a bit of turning over to get the fuel to the injectors being that 2 fuel filter housings need to be filled up. Just follow the steps in the video and all will be well
The prescribed method for filling the new filters with fuel and purging the air, is to cycle the key on for a short time, then back off, and repeat a number of times. I will turn the key on for 15 seconds then off for 5 seconds, and will do this 8-10 times. Then the truck will crank right up and idle perfectly as all air has been purged.
Too bad you didn't do this video on a pickup instead of a chassis cab truck, the rear water separator removal is quite a bit more difficult back there. The engineers didn't put much thought into maintenance on these trucks.
Hey I have a 2015 3500 wit the push button start system. ow do you cycle the starter without trying to start the engine?
+Tall Don 68 I haven't seen a way yet to disable the "tip start" feature your speaking of. I will need to hook up to one next time to see if the feature can be disabled. Otherwise I have to let it spin over a few cycles until the fuel filters fill up after a service until it starts. I do 3-5 second cranks until finally starting and not overheating the starter Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
+Tall Don 68 don't step on the brake, but press the start/stop button twice (accessory position then run position) and you will hear the pump cycle. After the pump cycles then press start again to go to off. Repeat 4-5 times and finally run the engine by pressing the brake down during the final start cycle. Note: if you just take to the accessory position (like I did) 4-5 times then you will have a really hard starting sequence that you can't stop even if you press the start/stop button again.
Awesome video. Thanks for the pointers.
Thanks man that was very helpful
Great video man. Anybody ever tell you that you look like that dude on Kids in the Hall LOL
Haha......that it the first time actually! Thanks for watching!
I change my fuel filter on my water seperator but every time im loading them the sensor start leaking dissel
Yes thank you!!
shawn dickson your welcome. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
Thank you for the help
Calistro Rodriguez anytime. Make sure to subscribe if you haven't already
He is good!
Many thanks Paul!
Looking for the add-on (severe duty fuel filter) (left inside frame rail) changing the drain/water sensor for replacement filter 68083826AA. The drain/water sensor is a little different than this particular model. Former mopar mechanic
I havent had the chance to see one of these set ups in person or actually service one. Would love the chance to get one in the shop and do some filming. Make sure to subscribe incase I do ever upload a video such as that......you will get notified.
how often are u supposed to change these filters ?
Diesel fuel filters are recommended every 15,000 miles. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe!
MotorCity Mechanic i did sub waiting to buy one but learning and saving first. thanks for responding
Much appreciated!
Much appreciate the sub!
My water in fuel light come on when I go through the car wash or it’s raining what would cause this to do that it goes off after dries off
Check your connection
Is this the same for a 2017 3500?
The service will be the same....the location most likely will be above the rear diff and not on the frame rail like in the video. The steps to replace will be exactly the same. Thanks for asking and for watching. Make sure to subscribe!
Great video. You saved me a lot of money and I like your attention to detail. I subscribed to your channel and will be using it when needed. Thanks again.
Awesome! Thanks for having subscribed and make sure to check out my other videos as well.
Thank you!!!
Good video 👍
Thanks helped alot
Your welcome and thanks for watching
Should the title of your video include 2013's as well ?
Awesome!
how do you reset the light n the dash
+Robert Davis If the message is on the dash....you need to scroll through the “vehicle info” section of the menu until you find fuel filter section. It will allow you to reset the mileage and percentage counter by pressing the right arrow button and then scrolling down to “yes”. That should reset the message. Thanks for asked and for watching. Make sure to subscribe
What are you using to lube the rings? Just oil or some of the fuel?
The service info recommends using diesel fuel to live the o-ring. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe
+MotorCity Mechanic cool thank you I just purchased a 2014 cummins and I'm just trying to gather as much info as possible cause I want to try and keep it well maintained. And yes I already subscribed :)
Thanks for having subscribed!
I just drank a gallon of diesel. Fucking, cool. Take my advice and pay a professional to do this shit.
Its a messy job for sure and unless your have a large drain pan or more then one....its getting all over the ground if your not careful or yourself as you found out. One of those get it loose and then get out the way until it stops leaking. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe.
@@MotorCityMechanic thanks for the reply. Sorry for the negativity. I was really frustrated when it happened. Your video was informative though.
Bennie Herring no problem. That first time always gets you
👍
Thanks for watching Doug!
Trouble code 2008/3500 /6.7 Diesel Dodge ram /P000F /P1011 help me
👍👍🍻
2013 is the same with two ilters
looks like a duramax filter.
Why two
The most important thing about diesel engines is the fuel quality.....the more the better. Other brands such as Ford have been running two filters for a while now. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching. Dont forget to subscribe!
So let me tell ya this....I just did my 2015, and The REAR one was a tight ass fit for a mans arm/hand. Why they didn't install on the frame ,,,who knows. Then I did the front fuel filter. WTF....WTF.....that cap was on like the incredible HULK installed it.
It can be a work out sometimes. I had to baby a front filter cap off the other day......felt like it would never come off.
I found that it one starts rounding off....you can put a rag over it and then put the socket on. The rag acts as a spacer to help it grip better. Another option....Geno's Garage sales an aluminum replacement. The method you used is an alternative as well. I will have to keep that in mind in the future. Thanks for the idea. Make sure to subscribe if you havent already.
