Took my 2022 Ram 3500 HO to the dealer at 67,700 miles for some fluid service and an overall check as we've been traveling the country for the last year and have hauled overall 25,000 miles. Dealer told me I needed a "Diesel Emissions Service: Due at 67k miles - $1,595.88". I told him I didn't remember seeing that in the manual. He told me I need to get it done or I could go into limp mode. Told them I didn't want it. Headed over to MotorCity Mechanic and sure enough. What a scam. Thank you for all you do!
David im not sure you will see this, but thisvideo just saved me 3875.00 dollars. All i needed to change was the ccv filter, dealer tried to upsell me 4 other services. Thanks great videos
Dealer just told me the EGR cleaning service, 2012 Ram 2500, will cost over $2200 before tax. So happy to have found these videos. Thank you for these!
Just got quoted TWO THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED $$$$ for 2020 EGR service (clean the valve and the cooler and do CCV). Thanks for your video, saved me from that storm! Manual only says CCV so I'll do that one in my own garage.
I just did my CCV filter myself. I looked in the book trying to find where it said to do the other two services and there was no mention. It’s a 2017 2500 pickup. The dealership told me I would need to get them done and it was going to be $980 😳 Thank goodness I didn’t let them...

New to the diesel community. Just bought my first one a 2019 Ram 2500 Cummins. I have been watching lots of videos on what to do and not do with my new diesel truck. Your channel is by far the best, straight talk and good information. I had to have warranty work done, the cable on the EGR bypass valve broke and in turn ruined the EGR valve. Both replaced under warranty. When I picked it up the service person said if nothing else goes bad we will see you at the 67,500 mile service and clean the EGR cooler and valve and replace the CCV. If not for this video I would have just brought it in and had them do it, he said it was about a $1000.00. Thank you for all the information you give out you just saved me a lot of money I can use elsewhere.
I have a 2010 3500 Dually with 69000 miles on it. The maintenance schedule only has replacing the CCV filter and cleaning EGR cooler at 67,500 miles. Cleaning the EGR valve is not listed until 135,000 miles. I enjoy your videos and learn a lot from watching them. This is the first diesel I have ever owned so I need you to do more videos on the 6.7.

You saved me a TON of money. I got the dreaded "Perform Service" message right on cue on my '13 Ram 3500 Cummins. I called the dealer to get a quote and was told it costs $1200-$1500 dollars and it was the "rubber stamp" you mentioned to clean the EGR valve, cooler and filter replacement. I picked up a PCV filter at my local O'Reilly's for about $135 and replaced the filter myself. Took me about 20 minutes and all I needed was the tool to remove the wire clips and the 8mm socket. The filter was saturated so it needed to be changed. Did the procedure to clear the message and presto! All done. Thanks for the help!
I was told to watch your videos and I want to say thank you, just got a 2018 3500 6.7 and your videos clear up so much that the dealer said I would have to get done. Thanks!
The company I work for is has its own private mechanics for its fleet myself and couple others. I think that we may be over doing it when these intervals come out we do the CCV, egr cooler, the crossover tube, egr valve, the plenum (egr air flow control valve removed aka throttle body), and the heater grid we even go as far as to scrap some of the soot in the intake manifold and vacuum it out. All our diesels trucks range from ram3500-5500 cab and chassis.
My egr valve barely made 50k miles b4 having to replace it. Clean it several times and that didn't work, It was still reaching its learning limit or somethings like that. Put a new one on, so far so good. Kicking myself for selling my '06 5.9L 6 speed manual for a 2010.

Great video thank you. I went to the dealer this morning for the oil change on my 2018 and they tried selling me the $1600 service. I said no thanks and started looking on UA-cam. Low and behold here we are. I’ll be putting the new filter in myself.
I have a 2015 ram 2500 Cummins with 68,200 mile dealer told me today needed an EGR cleaning serve cuase of the service performance needed and wanted to hit me $1400 for all three service to get this done . I told them to hold off. I started researching when I ran into UA-cam channel and appreciate the info. You gave us. Thank you much.👍
A video i just watched a guy was going to get taken for a crankcase filter and a EGR valve clean, yes the EGR valve can be cleaned, which is time consuming, with degreaser and let it disolve the soot and he cleared his codes manually. Super easy, saved him 1800.00 the dealer wanted.
Thank you, David. You saved me a ton. My dealer wanted $1800.00 to do all 3 and I was ready to reluctantly pay it because I was sure my back couldn't bend over my engine that long to do it myself. I surely can do the crank case filter myself. I bought the Fleetguard filter on Amazon for $49.00 Mine is a 2016 Ram cummins diesel
Great video here, thank you for taking the time to share it! I just saw a recent video on a MY21 Ram Cummins where the dealer tried to get him for EGR valve cleaning at his 75k mile service. I noted that in my MY23 owners manual, all it says for the 75k service was the CCV filter, and nothing about cleaning the EGR. Interesting thing was that he took off his EGR valve and it did not look that dirty at all for 76k miles. Now I know why.
Thank you, wish every master mechanic was as honest as you, properly maintaining a diesel regardless of brand is expensive enough not to mention getting false information from your dealer...THANK YOU!!!
My buddy is a city mechanic that works on all the fire trucks and rescue squads plus other city vehicles. He says no don't need to soak the egr cooler and valve...you don't even have to clean the cooler. The valve has 2 little ports that get cleaned with an appropriate sized drill bit that you just spin between your fingers. He said they've never had a problem and then you can reset the code.
I really appreciate your videos! I've saved thousands, literally thousands doing some of the service myself with your guidance. Some things of course, I leave to the service center. My 2013 is in now and I was told the EGR needs cleaning and the orifices routed out. I thought I had seen this previously on one of your videos, another $300.00 saved. Thanks again!
Ty, I have a 2018 Cummins and everyone keeps saying “clean the egr cooler and egr. Dealer wants $1300 to do it and I’m like hell nah I was told o don’t have to 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thank you for this video! The Ram dealer in Valencia, CA tried telling me my 2019 Ram 2500 diesel needed all three services you mentioned instead of only the crankcase filter. I kept trying to find this requirement in the owners manual and couldn't. This video cleared that all up for me, thank you, Sir.
Solid bro, don't see many other people educating people about this interval on these trucks!!! Dealer tried selling my buddy the full service on his 2014 at 67,500, and at the crazy price of $2,000. I told him to tell them to F off and that at those prices, and that he would almost be able to pay for the cost of a brand new valve and cooler at his "second" cleaning interval, which is actually supposed to be his first cleaning interval at 135,000.
2018 6.7 Laramie 4x4 SWB. I'm certainly subscribing. It has never been back to the dealer, and it won't be. (but it only has easy breezy type 37K miles on it)
David, you are a ROCK STAR. I just traded my 2019 Ram 3500 CTD for a 2020 Ram 3500 CTD dually. only 1200 miles on it so far. You are my Go-To guy. Thanks for the clarity and for being honest.
thank you for this video, I just took my 5th gen in and the service writer asked if my egr has ever been cleaned (because i have 71k miles) I explained that the 2019 cummins service is not the same as the 2018, and a different service skoffed at me and said it's in my service manual; guess what I checked, it is not and it states CCV filter to be replaced at 75k miles
I have a 2017 w/ 67800 mi. Perform service light on, dealer just told me the service would be for all three. The quote $1500. Ouch. I will be looking at my owner’s manual and Thank You very much for your post. New subscriber here .
@@MotorCityMechanic It might be funny if it wasn't posted on other videos I have seen. And the accident wasn't his truck on the ramp rolling into the lake with all his guns in the back seat 😛
Thank you, dealer is trying to get me to pay $1500 for this service on my 19, decided to tackle it myself. Now just doing the cc filter after watching this and confirming with cummins 🤘
Hey Mike, I have the 2019 6.7 as well. The “perform service” message showed up at 67,500 but the manual only says tire rotation and minor inspections due. A crankcase ventilation filter is due at 75K according to the manual. Dealer is trying to get me to pay $1500 for the service as well at 68,000 miles. Question for you: did a “perform service” message come on at 67,500 for you?
Literally doing this today on my 2012 5500 cab chassis. Replaced the ccv in 5 minutes, takes longer to change the fuel filter honestly. Going to go ahead and clean the valve anyways but the cooler can stay put lol. Too much work for me today. Glad to hear my 21 service will be much simpler.
Hi there, even though Iam going to my fairly computer free 12 valve Cummins (500K+ miles, 300+ hp) running and would not touch a newer Dodge Diesel pick up with a broom stick, I very much appreciate your very honest eye-opening video and hope that many 6.7 Liter drivers will pay attention to it. Yes, shop mechanics like to cheat and yes it did happen to me to at a Dodge dealership in El Paso and I did pay for parts (valve cover gaskets) and service (valve adjustment) that have never been installed or being done. Thanks again for being helpful and take care!
Being retired on a fixed income I really appreciate your video's to help me do all the maintenance myself to same money. My 2016 3500 just gave me the 67 5 message and I was wondering if I needed to all three. I know now I only have to do the Crankcase filter. Thank you.
Completely correct EGR needs to be clean I have big trucks got rid of some of them maxforce 13 blew it out every 50,000 miles cheaper than a new EGR which is 3500 just the part spend an hour and a half two hours cleaning it it's golden I also do oil changes more frequently less carbon in the exhaust highly recommend aftermarket oil filters the cleaner to keep the oil the better off you are
Stay away from stealerships the beauty of these trucks is you can do most of the maintenance yourself. Especially on the new trucks after going on a diet IYKYK.
Great information. Changed all fuel filters , air filter and crankcase filter in about 1 1/2 hours. A lot of tht time was cleaning up my mess. Dont let them get ya. Learn to work on your own vehicles. Too much information out there these day to help you. Thanks
Just did my ccv filter myself paid 120 for a dorman ccv filter at advanced auto for my 2020. Took me 15 min mainly cause i didnt have a stool and i have a leveling kit on mine. And dealership tried selling me the egr cleaning
I have a 2009 and had trouble with egr cooler , cleaned and no longer have troubles with it since I use the engine brake all of the time now have 125 k . Dealer did not tell me about engine brake use to prevent cooler gate sticking .
Own a 2014 and did the egr and cooler cleaning myself thanks to your video, which was great and very informative. If it is not needed on a 2014, then what happens with all that carbon buildup?
I'm with you. 2015 I did the EGR cleaning too. Valve was partially sticking and was very sooted up. If not part of the service, wait for it to fail? BTW- Got my parts from Geno's and saved big $$.
Goodmorning David thanks to your videos I've been able to do my own servicing of all three (egr valve, egr cooler and the crankcase filter. ) I ALWAYS look at the videos B4 I start. They ALWAYS remind me the tools that I'll need so can be prepared. I JUST did the egr valve an egr cooler Feb 16. I've actually purchased these items off Ebay so I will have backups/already cleaned ready to install so I don't have to wait to clean and dry. I did my 2nd service at 119k miles instead of 135k. I'm getting my vehicle (2010 Dodge Ram 3500 dully)ready to go traveling out west. How do I reset the egr service reminder on the vehicle?? I change my oil every 3500 miles. I just had ALL my fluids , filters and the belt changed in preperation for my travels. Plus thru my extended warranty had ALL leaking seals replaced. Just trying to stay a head of any issues. YOUR VIDEOS ARE AWESOME AND VERY INFORMATIVE. 😷 Remember stay safe/healthy during this period of the pandemic 😷 I'll b n Georgia in a few weeks. If I'm close I'm going to try to stop by and show u my Dodge
Another great video David! Love the content. Now what I'd love to see is Parts like the EGR cooler and valve that are different between the years and an explanation as to why you think they made a change to the different maintenance schedule.
What a great service you are dong for us that own a Dodge Ram with a Cummins engine, keep up the good work!!! I don't know where you're located, but I wish you were in Arizona!
I have a 2016 International 4300 with the Cummins 6.7/ Allison trans. I was told, "bullet proof combo". 10K in repairs later, learned the hard way on service intervals. 😔 Bought the truck with 40K miles. I did oil changes every 5k miles along with 2 fuel filter, air filter and crankcase filter every 3rd oil chamge. At 100k miles, started hearing what sounded like dry bearing squealing noise. Replaced all accessory bearings, fan, tensioner and alternator. Noise still persisted on and off. At 120k Turbo went " SEE YA!" 🤦🏽 Took it to mechnic DPF filter needed service, almost $2000 later tells me "VGT Code" on turbo. Turns out VGT goes out because turbo is clogged to hell from zoot. Another $7K later I learned the entire EGR system and DPF need to be serviced at 80K miles. 🤦🏽 Expensive truck to service with all them damn filters.
I have a 2016 Ram diesel with 52K. I wish your shop was located here in southern California. I know that eventually there will come a time when I need a trustworthy diesel shop (68RFE, EGR, DPF) and hopefully by then I'll find one. But if I cant find one I'll be going to Grovetown GA for a vacation.
I have a 2016 3500 dually, at 67500 the service writer told me it was $1200 to do all three! I did the filter myself. Just looked at the manual and it shows nothing about the cooler and valve. A while later (100,000 miles) the EGR cooler cracked and contaminated the entire cooling system! $6600 later (extended warranty paid most) I got it back.
I have a 2017 ram 2500 Cummins. When will I have to clean the EGR valve and EGR cooler if not at 67,500 miles? Are there benefits for cleaning them anyway? Thanks.
Great information to learn. I have the 2018 Ram 2500 6.7. I was literally about to do all three. Feels great to know I just have to replace the CCV filter. Thanks! 👍🏽

Thank you, David! I am an old diesel mechanic. I am totally lost on these new trucks when it comes to emissions/tunning, and you sir are a great help, please keep it up! Couple question about DEF system. 1. I have been trying to figure out the date manufactured I thought I had it down but now I am seeing the 2.5 gals and can't find a date have they changed it or eliminated it? 2. The DEF injector is there a correct way to clean it? I have heard that Brake/Carburetor cleaner is ok to use, is it? Would I better off using just hot water and a scrub brush? Hope you get this and answer. Thanks for all you do David! You have a new fan. Old school rules till you try to figure out this programming stuff, lol.

Hopefully you were able to show them that lol. It’s all about being informed and glad that you did your research.
I have a 2017 w/ 67800 mi. Perform service light on, dealer just told me the service would be for all three. The quote $1500. Ouch. I will be looking at my owner’s manual and Thank You very much for your post. New subscriber here .
All my DEF stuff was lost in an unfortunate boating accident, just like my guns.
Haha.....seems to happen alot to many that I know lol. Stolen in the night lol
@@MotorCityMechanic It might be funny if it wasn't posted on other videos I have seen. And the accident wasn't his truck on the ramp rolling into the lake with all his guns in the back seat 😛
Emissions testing in AZ, can't lose it!
@@thebnbaldwin not on the REZ, A walker taken mine.
Hi there,
even though Iam going to my fairly computer free 12 valve Cummins (500K+ miles, 300+ hp) running
and would not touch a newer Dodge Diesel pick up with a broom stick, I very much appreciate your very honest eye-opening video and hope that many 6.7 Liter drivers will pay attention to it.
Thank you.
Thank you!
My EGR is missing
What's an EGR? My 17 ram 2500 told me he had it removed like a cancer 😂😂😂😂 and diesel particulate filter? Never heard of such a thing....
Mines still there cuz I’m broke but it stopped working lmao
I dropped mine. Never did find it.
They must use faulty bolts, I lost the EGR and my whole damned exhaust fell off.
So’s mine….can’t imagine what happened to it.
I watch this guy for my 07 Dodge 6.7L before I do anything .
Thanks Tiffany for the kind words and support.
Thanks David, from your loyal customer in Florida.
Thank you u just saved me a 1000$ my dealer is trying to sell me on all three I have 2014 3500 6.7l D. Way to go bud…….
Your a legend David 👏
Thanks Matt!
David, Thank you very much. Trust your new business is doing well. Best wishes.
Great information. Changed all fuel filters , air filter and crankcase filter in about 1 1/2 hours. A lot of tht time was cleaning up my mess. Dont let them get ya. Learn to work on your own vehicles. Too much information out there these day to help you. Thanks
Just bought a 2015 2500 w/6.7L Cummins. This video was very informative, thank you
Fuel filter swap, quoted dlr. $500, my tire guy( diesel guy) $300, got both filters/
O rings oil filter too, Mopar $50.
Just did my ccv filter myself paid 120 for a dorman ccv filter at advanced auto for my 2020. Took me 15 min mainly cause i didnt have a stool and i have a leveling kit on mine. And dealership tried selling me the egr cleaning
Thank you 🙏 bro I have a 2014 2500 tradesman Ram this helps me on what I’ll be checking to do
You just saved me $1300!. Thank you!
Amazing, thanks for all of your help since I found your channel. Getting me right on my first diesel
Useful and detailed info down to year, model, what services are needed and how much it would cost. No annoying music. Thank you! Subscribed!
Just ordered a ‘22 6.7 2500. I’ll have my eye on those service guys Crank case filter and that’s it!!
Some service guys are wrench monkeys in disguise
@@chrishapp4742 What’s “Geno’s” care to share a link? Thanks 👍

Your welcome Lawrence!
😷 Remember stay safe/healthy during this period of the pandemic 😷
I'll b n Georgia in a few weeks. If I'm close I'm going to try to stop by and show u my Dodge
How come the 2013-2018 group doesn’t get the egr cooler and egr valve cleaned? Would it be a good idea to clean it?
Because SCR (DEF) systems reduce EGR
because they magically fall off :)
Thanks I have 2020 3500 . Thanks for all the info.
Your welcome. Make sure to subscribe and check out my other videos
Dude you rock! I wish your shop was near me.
Thanks for the cool feedback and kind words
Your video’s are awesome. Great information. I look to your video’s for all my maintenance.
Thanks Tim! I appreciate it. Its always cool to hear about people coming back to the channel for all their needs.
Thanks for the info...its all about preventative maintenance ...
Another great video David! Love the content. Now what I'd love to see is Parts like the EGR cooler and valve that are different between the years and an explanation as to why you think they made a change to the different maintenance schedule.
thank you buddy. honest man!
Your welcome and appreciate the feedback
Thank you again David for an exceptional informational video!!
What a great service you are dong for us that own a Dodge Ram with a Cummins engine, keep up the good work!!! I don't know where you're located, but I wish you were in Arizona!
CCV filter sitting on the shelf in garage ready to be changed on my '16. Already changed it out on my '14....super easy. Watch his video on it.
Thanks for the upload very informative. Glad you pointed this items out.
Thank you soooo much for this information
Your welcome Jose and thanks for being a loyal subscriber
I have a 2016 3500 dually, at 67500 the service writer told me it was $1200 to do all three! I did the filter myself. Just looked at the manual and it shows nothing about the cooler and valve. A while later (100,000 miles) the EGR cooler cracked and contaminated the entire cooling system! $6600 later (extended warranty paid most) I got it back.
yep that is good advice thanks for sure you the man
Your welcome
I keep that in mind thanks again 👍
Nice office david. Honest truth info. Saving money
Did my CCF at 65,400 , now just did mine again at 40,000 because I wanted to. At just under 100,000 mi. Might do my EGR cleaning
u sure keep a nice and neat office prob a reflection of the way u work nice and neat I know ive seen ur shop keep up the good work dave
Thanks! 👍🏽
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍this is the kind of guys that we need. THANK YOU SIR
Wow very informative, thank you so much for the help. You've earned yourself a subscriber
I am so thankful for your videos! They’ve helped save me a ton of money. Do you happen to know anyone you trust in Western Washington? Just in case...you’re quite the drive for me🤣
Thank you, David!
You would definitely be my mechanic for my truck. Thanks for the video gonna buy my ccv filter now.
What does it do I’m confused
