I'm still waiting for a British singer/band to come out with their version of this song/situation and the tragedy brought on by England's unlawful and unethical invasion of Ireland and a multitude of other countries.
These are the scenes of my youth - I grew up and still live in N. Ireland. The army was everywhere, machine guns were a non-remarkable thing cos they were an every day sight. Bombs & bomb scares were so common that they became almost 'normal'......our so-called 'peace' is still very fragile. Thank you for reacting to this, and R.I.P. Dolores for giving us this song💔....it is part of our history and 'The Troubles'. It's message is overwhelming powerful.
Agreed! The song is totally overwhelming, and the video was inspired by the director taking the camera out onto the streets and just filming what they saw for a day and then working around that. I always feel that this is one of the finest examples of how great artists can create beauty from pain and darkness...
I can't begin to comprehend what it must have been like living through The Troubles. My experience of that time was from the eyes of a very young boy, and all via the news from the safety of my home in England. My late father in law was an Military Policeman in the British Army. So I guess that put him in the strange position of being hated by The Irish, and by the British soldiers he had to police. Even I find this song moving, What must it be like for those, like you, who really understand it from the heart!
I lived in England during those times and we looked on in horror. Every now and then a bombing such as Warrington occurred, and that brought it home once again how tragic and sickening the whole thing was. I cannot imagine what it was like for you. I hope you've managed to create a happy life in spite of the trauma of it all. Let's hope that the relative peace in NI can continue, and we can all learn to live together harmoniously. RIP Dolores.
I forgot how insanely awesome the drums are in this song. This is really a great song. RIP Dolores, you are truly missed. The drums perfectly convey the anger of this song.
Dolores wrote the Zombie the night of the bombing while the Cranberries were on their England tour. The morning after when presenting the song to the band se asked Fergal Lawler to play the drums has hard has he could.
There’s a story behind the drums in this song. After a few takes the producer asked if he could hit the drums a little harder and his reply was, yeah I can do that. And so he did
As many have pointed out, this song is about Ireland. One reason Delores O'Riordan's voice is so distinctive is that she draws on a traditional Irish singing style called "keening." When her voice sort of flips into falsetto at the end of vowel sounds, that's one of its characteristics.
I didn't know that even though I grew up with this song and I'm part Irish! Thx so much for that! Also, I knew 'keening' as a form of lament but didn't know it was also a style of singing, I suppose like wailing, this brings another dimension to the song!
Wow thanks for the info I didn’t know it was a traditional vocal style, every day is a school day…keening. Didn’t she do it brilliantly. The same emotion she related in the less well known “ New New York” about the twin towers. You will get the emotion there too far better than most. What a waste, all those lost in the troubles and Delores herself!❤
@@Chris-kw9hjDon’t know if you’d call them senseless, they were ideologically motivated and planned terrorist attacks. You know, if you don’t have any colonialism you definitionally can’t have any anti-colonial terrorism.
Dolores and her family lived in Canada years ago and was a neighbour. She didn’t ran into any as far as I know. 😊 She and my sister got pretty close because their kids were the same age. Truly a beautiful woman. Love you Dolores. 💕💕
This is a protest song written by Dolores O'Riordan after the murder of two children, by the Provisional IRA, in Warrington, England, in 1993. She was sickened by the senseless attack, which was carried out in the name of Irish Nationalism.
What Delores is doing with her voice is called keening (crying/wailing) done at wakes and gravesites to show grief to bereaved families. Fits in perfectly with this song.
I am so glad y;all did this one....RIP Delores O'Riodan!! They made this song in protest and in memory of 2 young children that was killed in 1993 Warrington Bombings between the IRA and British Forces.

It just hits so hard when you lived during the troubles and saw this shit happening. It was a heartbreaking time and so, so pointless. This song is just the best.
The song was written in response to the death of Johnathan Ball, 3, and Tim Parry, 12, who had been killed in the IRA bombing in Warrington, northwest England, when two devices hidden in litter bins were detonated. Ball died at the scene of the bombing as a result of his shrapnel-inflicted injuries and, five days later, Parry lost his life as a result of fatal head injuries. 56 others were injured, some seriously. Parry died in his father's arms in Liverpool's Walton hospital. The two boys had gone shopping to buy Mother's Day cards on one of the town's busiest shopping streets.
Thank you for sharing this, I knew the song was in reference to a bombing (Ora bomb in a waste bin) I didn't know who had perished, but knew they were children. Really hope tensions ease up and there is peace in the north of Ireland.
"Dreams and "Linger" should be next. Delores sang using an Irish Style called Keening. It's how Irish Women sing in mourning and in paying honour to those lost tragically. This song is very serious, dark and sad. There is no way to dance, bop or celebrate to this song once you understand what she's singing about. There was a bombing. It was done in such a way that people ran towards the danger after misleading calls were made to the authorities. A toddler out shopping with his sitter died. They bombed a shopping district at a busy time during a normal week day. It was awful. Religion and Politics over the safety of children.
Thank you for that deeper insight! I was very young during The Troubles. And far away in the safety of England so I really couldn't really understand just how awful it must have been for those caught up in it in Ireland and in The UK.
@@GnrMilligan This was written about Warrington, so it was closer to home for many. Love how Dolores captured the feeling in the chords, the lead guitar, the lyrics and mostly in the special use of her keening voice.

Having heard this version of the song I hope you've listened to the tribute version by Bad Wolves. It was intended to be a cover/duet style with Dolores (lead singer of the Cranberries) singing alongside them, but sadly she passed away days before they were meant to record the cover. Their rendition has such emotion burned into the song, you can feel the sombre tone and the sadness as they pay tribute to Dolores. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't already.
I always felt the chorus was about PTSD regarding war. I know she wrote it because of all the conflicts in Northern Ireland, but always feel the zombies are the people dealing with the aftermath.
I have heard this in passing and thought what a great set of pipes. Mostly in the store as background ambience and had no idea what the song was about or the story behind it. RIP Dolores
Glad to see you get to know The Cranberries. I think as a one-year anniversary, you should revisit this song after hearing some of the rest of their songs. Cranberies have been one of my favorite bands for a long time. Boomer!
I only realised how much I played this CD (back in the day) when my then 3 yr old could sing the whole thing with me, end to end (in the car). No Need to Argue is the only album ever made to rival Dark Side of The Moon (my all time fav) in my opinion. If you haven't listened to it end to end, your loss. RIP Dolores - you were pure magic.
The band Bad Wolves covered this song and donated all proceeds earned from the song to Dolores children. She was all set to be apart of the remake, but sadly passed away the day before 😢 It’s a powerful tribute to an awesome person ❤
One of the more powerful songs I've ever heard. I loved this when it came out, and it's disturbingly still applicable to far too many places around the world today. The video is every bit as powerful as the song, and when the children in gold around the cross start SCREAMING in silence, even more so. Glad to see you review it. Another very powerful song by a female artist I would recommend would be "Joey" by Concrete Blonde. If you've ever known anyone losing the war to drugs or alcohol, it will hit you hard.
Thirded lol no seriously, please do this cover, like many have already mentioned, it was supposed to be a colab with her before she tragically passed away, so they did it as a memorial to her and it does not disappoint!
This was redone by Bad Wolves. She’s supposed to do vocals on it but she passed away right before they’re able to do it together. Bad Wolves did it and sent all the proceeds from the song to her kids. If you get a chance check out there version of it also. R.I.P
❤❤This a song from my children’s childhood, but I loved it just as much as they did. They were extremely popular. One Saturday I had taken my children into DC to the National Aquarium and the Natural History Museum and noticed a very large crowd gathering on the National Mall. After making our way through traffic and finally getting home, I heard an announcement on the radio that the Cranberries were performing an impromptu concert on the National Mall. My oldest son was so disappointed. I was too, but the traffic has a way of helping you get over it. I definitely wasn’t going to go back through what we’d just fought our way through.
If you liked this, you should check out the cover by Bad Wolves - a rock cover, which she was meant to have been on, but died just as they were about to record it. They went ahead with it anyway as a tribute to her.
I’m so incredibly happy you did this song. This is one of, if not my favourite band of all time. Dolores O’Riordan has in my opinion the greatest voice in rock. When she died it was the first time I have cried over a musicians death. I would love to see you do more songs by The Cranberries in the future. RIP Dolores.
Love your comment about band names. Strawberry Alarm Clock was HUGE in the San Fernando Valley when I was a teenager. My mother worked in property management and a couple of the guys lived in one of her buildings!!
Bad Wolves did a cover of this song that was amazing. I believe on the day of going her to go record her vocals for it she passed away, they still released it and done it justice.
This song always makes me cry but when you watch the video too and the little boys open their mouths in that silent scream it's like a punch to the guts.
Irish singers are the best. I love how Dolores can jump from a low reguzitoa high register and back in such a controlled way. That's a n Irish singing technique is find very enchanting.
This song is known and loved by pretty much everyone,, This was played at a strictly dance music festival not long after she passed away and it gave me goosebumps,, just the volume of the crowd and the unity of 60,000 people was something I'll never forget
Now that you've heard the original, you should watch/listen/react to "Bad Wolves" rendition of this, and the sad story behind their own version and the lead singer of the Cranberries, Deloris.
This video sends my mind into headspins. Because I spent 8 years carrying a weapon that was intended to take others' lives away from them. I was trained to send them to heaven or hell with no thought of it all. I was a trained zombie to take life away from whomever I was ordered to destroy without any second thoughts.
The aggression and sadness in her voice compliments her facial expressions so beautifully, and she is able to deliver the message that way . What started off about the warrington bombings , the relevance of the song still holds value to this day and will forever be until there’s wars and humans keep fighting.
My first concert ever was The Cranberries concert in 1993. I remember it like yesterday as it was just before my freshman year of high school. I had a very frightening incident happen to me prior to this and it ramped up my depression. Going to their concert was such a great moment for me because I was able to let go and just enjoy their music. I still cannot believe Dolores is gone but I'm so grateful that I got to experience that because it did help get me through because it was just a few weeks before I was going to start high school of all things. RIP Dolores and thank you. 🙏🏻
Although this is a very well played and sung song, it's another ballad type that deals with the troubles in Ireland. These guitar 🎸 notes are box strumming with some vibration tossed in. The drumming is spot on, not too much, nor too little, but precise in every stroke. Listen how the base/bass guitar is playing really fast, but not destroying the beat.. This is a heck of a lot of music and well executed. The perfect hard rock song.
Delores wrote this about some young kids getting killed by an IRA bomb on mainland UK at Warrington England. Difficult situation half the Irish want independence the other have wish to remain in the UK. I just wish we could all get on. Peace
You chose a beautiful wailing Celtic goddess. She will wail till the end of time! Don't question it, just let her wail and be happy that she laments your downfalls.
This song is soo powerful. You also gotta check out Bad Wolves version of this. The lead singer of the Cranberries was supposed to sing with them. But tragically the day before she died. In the video they did a beautiful tribute to Delores RIP 🙏
Song has a very special place in my heart. I was young, and so often you'd get bomb threats, or your town centre flattened by a nail bomb, and I just couldn't understand why the Irish wanted to kill us. This song made my 7 year old self realise that they didn't.
Please do the Bad Zombies cover of this! like many have already mentioned, it was supposed to be a colab with her before she tragically passed away, so they did it as a memorial to her and it does not disappoint!
Everytime I here this song it gives me chills. It's a song where you have to sit and actually take in the lyrics as there is such a sad and dark story behind it.
I almost got through this without crying. Almost. I don't know how anyone can hear a song desperately decrying war, senseless violence, massacres, and the murder of children, and NOT be emotional 😢
It is about the fight in Ireland. I was in the UK in the 80's and there were concerns about the Irish Republican Army. I was a very bloody conflict. You really need to read up on this.
The Cranberries are awesome. This song is great. Please react to Linda Ronstadt next Friday or any day. She has the voice of an angel. She was the first female to sell out arenas.
You HAVE to follow it up by doing the cover of Zombie by Bad Wolves. Tribute to lead singer, Delores, of the Cranberries
Seconded.
Thirded lol no seriously, please do this cover, like many have already mentioned, it was supposed to be a colab with her before she tragically passed away, so they did it as a memorial to her and it does not disappoint!
She was supposed to sing the chorus on their cover, but she sadly passed away. :(
What a gift Dolores was even if for only moments.
1916 was when Ireland was patitioned into Republic & N Ireland, beginning of the "troubles".
Ireland was partitioned on May3rd 1921 the events of 1916 was uprising against uK rule.
I am 70s kid and I love CRANBERRIES.
This was redone by Bad Wolves. She’s supposed to do vocals on it but she passed away right before they’re able to do it together. Bad Wolves did it and sent all the proceeds from the song to her kids. If you get a chance check out there version of it also. R.I.P
A suggestion for Female Friday from me is, "I'll Stand By You" by the Pretenders. Crissy Hynde is the lead singer and she sounds great.
A GREAT guitarist suggestion too!
One powerful message she put forth when it was released.RIP Delores.
Might be one of the best statement songs ever. ❤. Thank you.
If you liked this, you should check out the cover by Bad Wolves - a rock cover, which she was meant to have been on, but died just as they were about to record it. They went ahead with it anyway as a tribute to her.
An absolutely stunning voice gone away too soon 😢
what a distinct voice and great song. rip dolores.
One of the best anti-violence, anti--war songs ever written and performed. RIP Delores.
Powerful song and music video --- The angel kids in gold represented kids who died in the conflict.
Zombie wasn't the original title to this record. I still have the original CD, bought back in the day!
Well now you guys have to do Bad Wolves - Zombie which covers this and that video directly references this one.
I can really feel how she draws all that strength and tension from her body when she sings. So powerful.
This song always makes me cry but when you watch the video too and the little boys open their mouths in that silent scream it's like a punch to the guts.
One of the best music videos ever made.
Irish singers are the best. I love how Dolores can jump from a low reguzitoa high register and back in such a controlled way. That's a n Irish singing technique is find very enchanting.
You need to do Evanescence - My Immortal. Amy Lee has such an incredible voice.
That album was the first album I ever bought with my own money
You must be the only dude of your generation who knows Strawberry Alarm Clock. Respect.
Loving your choices in music, all fantastic memories cheers x
I'm 60 years old and don't recall ever hearing this song. Thanks for teaching me also!
This song makes me cry everytime I listen to it.
This song always gets me emotional. It's about the fighting in Northern Ireland that's been going on since 1916.
It's been 800 years of Irish resistance against any British rule in Ireland 1916 was the Easter rising but many a rebellion happened before it.
Incredible voice RIP Delores 🙏
A group named Bad Wolves did a version of this song with the original singer who passed away before the video came out.
This song is soo powerful. You also gotta check out Bad Wolves version of this. The lead singer of the Cranberries was supposed to sing with them. But tragically the day before she died. In the video they did a beautiful tribute to Delores RIP 🙏
Videoclips were also works of art in themselves.
Irish Keening....so beautiful.
Epic song. So glad your video was released from YT jail so I could see you react to it! ❤
This is a masterpiece.
I was born and raised until 8 years old in Belfast Northern Ireland, so the Cranberries and this song especially is very personal to me
Song has a very special place in my heart. I was young, and so often you'd get bomb threats, or your town centre flattened by a nail bomb, and I just couldn't understand why the Irish wanted to kill us.
This song made my 7 year old self realise that they didn't.
Three minutes into a reaction video of an Irish band and I get an advert for whiskey, lol.
Dolores has an amzing voice and this song hits me every time
RIP Dolores. 😪❤ Her voice is an Irish treasure
It is about the fight in Ireland. I was in the UK in the 80's and there were concerns about the Irish Republican Army. I was a very bloody conflict. You really need to read up on this.
Has to be one of the best anti war songs of all time - so poetic.
Was able to take my oldest daughter to one of their shows in the 90’s. Was a great show.
The Cranberries are awesome. This song is great. Please react to Linda Ronstadt next Friday or any day. She has the voice of an angel. She was the first female to sell out arenas. Her catalogue is extensive and spans forty years. I suggest “Long Long Time” or “Someone to Lay Down Beside Me”. Love your channel. 🥰
Another great Female Friday! Great picks again Amber!! ROCK ON!! Jeff
If you loved this you NEED to watch the cover/tribute to Delores by Bad Wolves. Sooooo powerful!
Your best review yet!
