As one who's seen the movie I can say that the movie gratefully did not adapt the og games into just platforms in the sky. Context is that it's a training course for the actual stuff he does in the real movie.

so is mario NES being framed as having depicted a training course? i dislike this too. it smells like the "mario 3 is a stage play" theory

@puppyhelictriangle the scene isn't directly adapting any particular 2D mario game. it's just a sort of general reference to the idea of 2D mario.

@@puppyhelictriangle Not all of NES mario -- a lot of other things from the NES games are also adapted more naturally into the setting. To me this part read as specifically adapting the athletic stages from smb3, but that has the exact same issue that you talk about in the video.
also now you've got me now considering why, in the actual game, they decided to depict so many elements of mario 3 as if they are props, while definitely not actually being a stage play. Its a very curious artistic choice

I'd agree if mario games had stayed 2d forever. The later stages in games like 3d world or galaxy 2 do boil down to 2d-ish tightrope design, both in level design and aesthetics (usually being skyhigh platforms).
Theres more than one scene like this, but theres also a scene near peach's castle town (the one in the poster) that do mix physical spaces with nonsensical structures better.

I think the creative bankruptcy of depicting the most visually recognizable version of what people recognize as "Mario" without any interpretation or original thought behind it is kinda my biggest problem with this movie conceptually. Like, there are a decent number of games that manage to do their own thing with these characters and their world and the Mario Movie just, doesn't. This was probably the way to get the most money by appealing to the most brand safe imagery, but god does it feel disappointing when game after game is praised for doing something original. Galaxy has so many things wholly unique to it. Sunshine is recognizable at a glance. Odyssey manages to feel distinct even as its worlds are so diverse. This doesn't feel like its own piece of art, it just feels like an AI was fed images of old mario games and told to make an adaptation and to make Jack Black do a pretty good job in it

Having seen this movie, the thing that kind of jumped out at me the most as most irritating was the choice to have Holding Out For a Hero playing over this training montage. I have pretty much the same issue with pretty much all the licensed music in the movie but it just feels so cheap in a way that speaks for itself. I guess the most I can say for it is that it at least has perhaps one hair of relevance to what is happening, unlike this movie’s choice to put Take On Me over a tour of DK Island. I think they just straight up gave up at that point. It made me so annoyed that I didn’t even really consider the other things wrong with this scene. This movie is bullshit for plenty of other reasons but I think this is what broke me.

it reminds me of 3d land and 3d world, where they translate the 2d game into a 3d space in the same way. It's all just floating platforms above an endless void, with environmental details here and there to suggest a more detailed world than there is. it works for me in the game, i imagine for the same reason it works in 2d, but in the film i cant really see it as anything better than a bit that misses the point of the game

Honestly? I thought it was pretty good. Something I thought was neat is that (spoilers I guess) the movie is an isekai of all things, and Mario and Luigi are placed on opposite ends of the isekai situation spectrum. Mario experiences the standard formula, being sent into a fantasy world, going on a quest and saving his brother. Luigi goes to basically hell, gets brutally interrogated and then put into a cage with other prisoners talking about the sweet release of death.
Also Mario gets vored at two points in the movie and at the end bowser is put inside a jar. Just thought you should know.

*IT GETS WORSE* this entire scene is a training montage set to the Holding Out For A Hero by Bonnie Tyler and it is the FIRST of FOUR generic licensed movie music, the next is Take On Me by a-ha which scores a scene where they are driven to the Kong Kingdom's castle... then THUNDERSTRUCK by AC/DC plays over another LITERAL interpretation of the Mario Kart Kart Assembly screen from Mario Kart 8, where they literally have a wheel they spin to assemble the karts just like in the game, and then as a cherry ontop, Mr. Blue Skies plays at the very end of the movie after Mario and Luigi save the day.
(I audibly groaned out loud at every single one of these instances)

The training course is more inspired by Mario 3D Land and 3D World than it is by the NES og SNES games. 3D Land espically has some levels that are basically designed like this, very linear and flat, barely utilizing the three-dimensional space.

I saw the movie when it came out, and I honestly really don't like it. What upset me most about the movie was there being a character that was heavily depressed and wanting death, and it was played off as a joke and annoyed the rest of the cast. It really upset me not only seeing it, but hearing the laughter that would ensue when people heard the character talking about craving death and live being hopeless or whatever or when the character was upset that their death was stripped away from them. The worst part is, this is a family friendly movie. That kind of stuff does not belong in that genre in the slightest.

since in the movie it's a training course i think it makes sense to make the movement 2D so mario can practice, kinda. i don't think it's a big deal and there's that part of the movie (mario going to peach's castle) where we actually see those platforms being used more "realistically" as part of 3D movement

  • @rezlana

I skimmed the comments and I don't think anyone else has mentioned this, but there is a scene early on in the movie when Mario is still in Brooklyn and he and luigi are trying to rush through an active construction site as a shortcut to get somewhere, and the construction site is set up to mirror the design of World 1-1 in a way that I think is very cute and much better would meet one's expectations for a "real life mario level". I don't really disagree with any of your criticisms of their choice in abstraction for the training course, but I just think it's worth mentioning that this isn't the only part in the movie where they try to do this, and I think the other part of the film that does it does a much better job. That being said, the movie is really not great on a number of levels (which sucked because I was really looking forward to it and am generally extremely easy to please lol).

as someone who watched the mario movie, your interpretation is both valid and invalid (kinda ?) the scene showing the classic mario looking world shown in the trailer is a training course, a purposeful distilling of anything mario might happen to need to know to its barest essentials, and while i find the pandering "hey check out this thing u recognise" thing the movie constantly does annoying, in this specific scene it almost makes sense. the visuals of classic games are being used as shorthand for training, if not great shorthand at that. the issue with my point is, however, that much of the central mushroom kingdom's aesthetic is, in fact, based upon the classic mario 3d land/world aesthetic, and they jam it into your Fucking face with the establishing scene. this sentiment is basically my entire thought on the film, neat ideas that if focused upon couldve made for a fun thing to explore artistically or at the very least would have made for an interesting take on the series, ignored after its most basic consideration for the sake of checking as many boxes as possible. i don't really know if i have an actual point to make in this comment, other than that it was a very smart decision on your part to just not watch the movie, im very much wishing i made the same decision

I agree, but in the context of the movie it's more a reference to the first game on the NES. This is a common occurrence in the film.
The first time i watched it in theatres i liked how it looked and felt but seeing as it's mostly just a kid's movie made by a studio that mostly makes kids movies, the fan service was too frequent in place of an actual story. Despite being directed by Miyamoto himself, the movie doesn't have a story like with some if not ALL of the Paper Mario games. Spoilers from here on out.
The scene where Donkey Kong has a heart to heart with Mario could have been resolved by the two making up for past mistakes and agreeing to work together, instead they learn nothing and fight like children.
Bowser wanting to marry peach is the main plot device and reasoning for the events in the story. In Super Paper Mario, the wedding with Peach and Bowser ends up as nothing more than the main villain gaining ultimate power. Later on it's resolved by the bad guys helping to save the world from being sucked into an eternal void, including the main antagonist having a reconciliation with his long lost love and becoming a nicer person.
In the Mario Movie, there's no real character growth outside of Mario getting over the taste of mushrooms, from my standpoint at least.
This movie is just a head empty reference filled kids movie that is supposed to sit and look pretty rather than have a decent plot. Even in the start, a toad buying an original cartridge-based NES is told to blow into the cartridge to make it work.
But hey, at the very least it's not the original live actio- aaaaand they reference that too in the first chunk of the film. Great.

As someone who did watch the mario movie, here is the context
Mario had just showed up to the mushroom Kingdom, and peach just decides to bring him along cause his brother is in danger, and she's also human. Mario has to do this obstacle course to prove to her that he's worth bringing along. Wacky hijinks and failures ensue. A few things of note here are:
    1. This is the only time any set piece has a natural buildup and resolution. The movie is often criticized for its pacing and script, and this is actually the sole example of them not rushing something to get to the next set piece
    2. Peach admits fairly early on that she got it done first try, while it takes Mario hundreds to barely pass. You'd expect weirdo trolls to latch onto that fact, but they were to busy gawking at the lack of gay people
    3. I think you should watch the movie solely so you can experience the scene where Donkey Kong and Mario talk about their daddy issues in the belly of a whale

To fulfill the complete little joel experience i think you'll have to hide this video ro make a clarification. Won't repeat what people have been saying in the comments here i just want to add that elements of the 2d games are adapted in ways that arent the completely literal representation shown in this video. the movie also does not directly adapt the events of any specific game, it's not as if the training montage is supposed to represent a specific game or era of games, the whole movie just throws in as many references to as many mario games as possible, chronology be damned. for instance theres a scene you can find in one of the trailers which directly references super mario bros 1's fish bridge but it isn't a scene set in one of these "tightrope 2d" sets. I understand how you could reach your conclusion, though, that part of the trailer felt odd to me as well, and in general that part of the movie seemed unecessary.

THIS 100% because like in the first act of the movie when they're still in Brooklynn, they *do* show Mario parkour-ing around a construction area while the camera side-scrolls! He's doing the video-gamey stuff he's always done but in a believable world that has depth to it; as if his whole thing is that he's a plumber who jumps really well. This doesn't really happen again. Either he's piss-dick shit at maneuvering around or the setting just doesn't demand for any platforming.

You claim that this scene takes things literally from the game, but I think that you're taking this too literally by having no context for what it actually is. You can take clips from a trailer with 0 context and take it at face value and delve into it, but that doesn't mean that the point has much merit. Like this is just a red herring that you've made for yourself lol
