    I’ve had the same thought about bath bombs. They’re so tempting to me for the idea of the moment when they go off and make the bath look pretty, but often the actual bath part doesn’t seem as appealing. Isn’t that what they’re supposed to be for- for having a bath? Why am I so drawn to it as if it’s a firecracker with no other use?

    I feel like the appeal of slime is at least partially "food that you don't eat, but is nonetheless consumed".

      Same. If I could get the gender feels of kneading slime *without* the "it's broken now" feels of mixing it into a homogenous goop, I'd probably buy some.

      The slime scientists need to work out a way to make their product fully edible whilst retaining the same texture. Then I will need nothing else from the world and can retreat to my hole in the ground to play with my food forever.

    the slime videos make me thing of the japanese mini food toys reviews that i used to watch. the appeal for me is watching someone play with something i dont own / cant buy / cant afford, and enjoying the process along the person recording the video. and also looking at tiny things.

    This connects to ideas I've been thinking about what it means to relate to objects. Like, growing up neurodivergent and pre-fidget toys (toys feels like a viscerally incorrect word), there was a whole process of discovering objects around to briefly fascinate myself, only to have it lie around outwardly unchanged but nonetheless used. What does it mean to consider these "art pieces"; what and where is the art when you have an experience of briefly communing with an object in your hands? Mass production and commercialization of "fidget toys" changes the relationship of what for me was always recognizing the individuality of an object in a particular moment in time. There is a sense that you can know the beingness of something through tactility that isn't present for the other senses, and slime offers what you can naively believe to be pure beingness.

    No hate on you or any of these slime review channels but I think that you've just perfectly described why gives me such a bad gut feeling; I mostly buy things only if I'm replacing something or if I'm really sure I'm gonna actually get use or enjoyment from it and try and reduce the stuff I have as much as possible; so just buying a thing, exclusively for the experience of reveling in its texture and feel for a short while before it eventually expires is just so alien and disconcerting to me. It simply feels wrong on such a fundamental level.

    as a kid, i never really liked slimes with stuff in them, but my school's OT insisted that i couldn't take them out, and if i didn't like the slime with the random plastic toys in it, i couldn't have the slime. the fact that the predominant industry surrounding slime seems to be "slime is a substance designed to hold together a rice krispie treat made of whale keychains and chunky glitter" suggests to me that perhaps the idea of slime as a sensory toy for autistic people has lost the plot

    I enjoy the textural element of this sort of content but the entropic element of a beautiful thing immediately being destroyed in a way that can never be undone is honestly terrifying to me and is largely the reason i can't watch these videos

  • @seanoreilly849
    @seanoreilly849 2 роки тому +20

    The way you describe it here, I would liken the purpose of slime to the purpose of Tabletop Role Playing Games.
    TTRPGs are this thing you buy, in the form of a written text, but the text itself isn't the experience, what TTRPGs are is an ephemereal, personal artform. In the same way that someone massaging and causing total enthropy in a container of slime doesn't encapsulate the fullness of the art, neither can watching an Actual Play podcast demonstrate the fullness of the art to a viewer. And in the same way that everyone's experience with an RPG is going to be different, but we still give critiques on the quality of the text, every persons experience with slime will be different, yet Talisa is still able to give a review on the quality of the slime, and the experience therin.
    Obviously these two things are dissimilar, messing with slime is usually a solo experience, while TTRPGs, especially those broadcasted via APs, are usually co-operative experiences. But I suppose I just wanted to gush about how the two can inform the other, and to thank you for giving me somewhat of an analogue to describe my thought process about RPGs, not just the text but the experience, as a relatively unique art-form.
    Most of my thoughts on this have been informed - or at least prompted- by Evey Lockhart. Find her on itch, she's a currently homeless trans mom, and my favourite poet, and I wouldn't feel good leaving this comment without recommending supporting her, and reading/listening to her stuff. Personal Recommendations would be Pretty Paleozic Pals: Permian Nations, How Does it Feel, and Call of Erosion. Although the latter two can get quite heavy with themes of otherization, self-harm, and dissociation, as a trigger warning.

    The same thing happened to me with slime videos overwhelming my feed, but it came from me trying to fill a void missing my cats rather than autism. I love the level of over analyzing in this video, though I have wondered the same thing. I keep thinking, “maybe this is something I could ask for for Christmas” but I really dislike the impermanence of it. Like I think long term the cloud slimes with bright colors would be my favorite to play with after the initial stages, but the ones I’m always the most drawn to in the videos are ones with clay pieces that look liked baked goods. But those always turn brown by the end!

  • @MissieLotus
    @MissieLotus Рік тому +1

    I love this perspective. I would also like to add that it's surprising how long you can keep your slime but it does have an element of impermanence still. Because when it does break down you can add things to fix it or change the colors so there's the second life of the Slime after you own it which is all up to you. But of course it doesn't last forever even then. And that's okay.

      yeah it's always confused me. slime is supposed to be like, a sensory toy, and I've enjoyed homemade slime that way before (tho the smell of borax on my hands afterwards puts a damper on things). I've been curious about these professional made slimes, with fluffier or stretchier textures than can be made at home. but then I watch slime videos and I get confused by all the spinkles and charms and stuff, how does that not break up the texture and make it really uncomfortable to handle, some just confuse me, some evoke a full body sensory cringe

    i've never really looked into slime videos, the closest type of video i have is probably lego mechanical design stuff (tho i like the non-lego mechanical design too, the lego videos just seem closer to slime than without); like designing air pump engines [1] or a robotic swivel arm [2] or a big marble machine [3] with lego. i can't really explain it past there being an allure to the process of engineering using nothing but standardized plastic parts, but i love it

    so the artistry angle is interesting, and valid, but from a communist critique, slimes are the perfect product: they are used up quickly and need to be bought new each time. Capitalists prefer to sell you shelf stable one use products, cause if you could keep using it forever you would stop buying it. The need to destroy commodities so they can sell you the same commodity over and over leads to capitalists co-opting ephemeral beauty into a sellable product
