I watched this on top of the pops when I was a kid, my dad came in and said 'what a fucking row, you call that music? now Glen Campell, thats proper music'. So my teenage daughter was watching a BTS concert on tv the other day and I said 'what a fucking row, you call that music, now Motorhead, thats proper music'
Haha, the audience didn't know what just hit them! This was their second TOTP appearance I believe, they had performed "Louie, Louie" a year earlier and the audience danced a bit but Overkill just had them stand there sheepishly. In 1979 artists like Village People, Bee Gees, C.Richard or G.Gaynor were dominating in TOTP, although The Police and Blondie were big in the UK too. And of course in december Floyd released "Another Brick in the Wall". But Overkill rules, belongs to every live set!
I watched this at a fellow Punk Rocker's house. Back then, it was very tribal. Punks and heavy rockers didn't get on that well, and there was much division. When this song started, we were laughing at "these heavy rock wankers". Our bands were the Sex Pistols, Sham 69, Damned, Siouxsie, Angelic Upstarts, SLF etc. You could not go liking a band like Motorhead. By the time the song had ended, we were no longer saying that. I bought the single, and admitted to heavy rocker mates that it was a great powerful song, just as aggressive as any Punk stuff. I have since seen Motorhead many times, all over. Including when they had Punk bands as support, (Damned, UK Subs, Anti Nowhere League). I was never a metalhead or a rocker. Stayed Punk, but still love Metallica, Anthrax and Pantera.
Damn, just read the notice about Phil Taylors death, apparently from liver failure but reportedly he had been in bad health for many years. First Würzel and now Philthy Animal Taylor. His relentless energy and overwhelming joy of drumming made "Overkill" the iconic song it is. Saw them live first time on their 1987 tour after Lemmy had rehired Phil and with Würzel and Cambpell on guitars. Phil was true to form and Würzel played like a maniac, my ears were ringing for over a week after the gig. Farewell Phil, September 21, 1954 - November 11, 2015.
Never got to see them Live :-\ So many shows I've seen. Missed out on Motorhead. I have so many beanies and Motorhead shirts. Just bad timing :-| They were gods to Me
Still remember the Motorhead Concert I was at, at the Tophat. All I heard was *EEEEEEEEEEEE!* until I popped my earplugs in, then I heard Lemmy start in with Overkill
Great stuff! I never got to see Motörhead live, but in 1979, when this was recorded I was living in Ladbroke Grove in London and Lemmy was often outside the pub round the corner in Portobello Road. I think it was the Princess Alexandra.
With his Jack and Coke in the Rainbow. Would have a drink and a chat with anyone who wanted to. What a guy. No heirs and graces like lot of these stuck up pansy celebrities these days who give not one single shit about their fans.
The exact song you are hearing is a slightly different sounding version of the Overkill single As it is a studio recording (the band are syncing in this video), the song you hear in this video features lead and rhythm tracks that are both played by Eddie Clarke, and these tracks overlap whenever Eddie starts soloing In an actual concert, Lemmy's bass would do more to fill the void left by the absence of a second guitarist, and Eddie would strictly play lead

I have Asperger's Syndrome & my dad used to think it was caused by the music I was listening to at one time.
Philip Dalton 🤔😂😂😂😂
Maybe your daughter will keep the tradition alive and say the same thing to her children.
Almost 40 years later, I can still see the look of horror on my late father's face. That was enough for me. lol. Motorhead for life
My dad bought the Overkill LP in 1979 and played it to piss off our neighbours.
The classic line up! No other band could do this justice.
3 Amigos 😍
Remember watching this aged 12. Brilliant then. Brilliant now. Lifetime Motorhead fan and the CDs are in the glove box, now and always.
yeah same. I have overkil and on parole. I'm about to buy bomber
There will NEVER be another band like that...
not a band , neither not that sound
otherwise it would be a simple copy
Phil's drumset is what all rock kits used to look like back in the glory days! Big huge rack toms and double kick!!! RIP Phil!!!
Not all. Not at all. A small percentage. Stop trying to sound clever.
Mainstream was and never will be ready for bands like Motorhead. Thx for the legacy.
RIP Lemmy, Phil, and Fast Eddie Clarke.
This was the song that got me into Motorhead and made Lemmy my musical hero - 28 albums later at they still rock! Long Live Motorhead
Me too.

Fast Eddie with an SG, this is real weird.
TOTP was usually mimed, I reckon he just grabbed whatever guitar they had there.
@@nomadnomad9517 yeah, that was going to be my answer too. 9 times out 10 it was completely mimed, the other times it was live vocals.
RIP Lemmy.
A nice man in real life.
With his Jack and Coke in the Rainbow. Would have a drink and a chat with anyone who wanted to. What a guy. No heirs and graces like lot of these stuck up pansy celebrities these days who give not one single shit about their fans.

I hear a rhythm guitar, but I don't see one. Please explain.

The camera man doesn't like Eddy! Even during his solo the camera shows Lemmy!
