First you need to turn off the water being supplied to the tank. Then you need to open a faucet on the hot side to relieve the pressure. On top of the tank there is a valve just like you would use on a tire. It’s also a good idea to actually unscrew the tank and remove it to check for corrosion on the inlet. Especially if it was screwed into copper. When it is screwed into a copper fitting it will build up with a lot of corrosion.
