Been doing this for years! Never had an issue. If you want it to refill FAST... I've rigged up a hose set to attach my vacuum pump to the small bottle. Pull 29" of vac on it... hook it up to the big bottle, and the gas gets pulled in in seconds!!! :D
HVAC here, your vac pump needs to be rated for A3 refrigerants, A3 being very flammable gasses, for what it’s worth, many small appliances are running R290, which is propane. (Probably without the added odouriser thats put in Natural gas reticulation), anyway the A3 for us extends to safe fan motors, sealed electrics etc also, since that propane can flash pretty easy, and a vacuum pump exhaust would need to be to a safe place away from the source, distance the pump itself maybe, or an A3 rated vac pump, as if that leaks it could do bad things with fire, compressor oils, smokes and debris. But our heat pumps and refrigeration systems get vac’d out to clear the void of moisture and it makes charging easier… another way is fill what you can straight in, then discharge the vapour rapidly which cools the container, then top it up again to weight. Can be done with a bleed valve on a tee, or vertically discharging enough vapour, then you dont need the pump at all.
@@f1reguy587 - Using a hvac pump. But… nothing in life is safe. After doing it for 25 some years though, I’ll just roll the dice now. ;) Do I recommend anyone else doing it? Of course not! YMMV.
I purchased one of the Flame King refill valves some time back and it seems to be well made. Or, purchase the FK refillable tanks. 👍🍻
Be careful folks, the weighing is critical, over filled tanks can fracture by hydraulic pressure effect if they get warm, which liberates all the gas in the cannister, all that is needed is a spark even a static electric spark, then boom !😆 Gaz UK.
sounds reasonable as long as your bottle is OK I guess but I would prefer to at least check the condition of the seal, I note you are filling MAP gas bottles with propane so while it will still work the flame will not be as hot

Bernzomatic yellow bottles are “MAP” NOT “MAPP” totally different in every way. Bernzomatic MAP (propylene) is, for all intense and purposes identical in heat to propane, yet cheaper and more available.
People also aren’t up to speed map is just a name at this point. It’s not the old stuff. A channel did a great video on it blue tank vs yellow tank. The main difference was the torch style it came with. The propane tank with a good torch burned only 100F less. Barely a difference to matter if your goal is hand held heat on steel. If you need more you get a 400$ torch kit oxy acetylene
I was hoping your other video would show how to add propane to aerosol cans. Adding air just doesn't atomize the “chemical” that's inside the can very well.
I don't know if Australia is different but Propane tanks are normally Red or Yellow in europe, normal domestic use store bought gas in cylinders like the one you are filling from are Butane, you will not get the higher temperature from Butane that you will get from MAPP gas. I have a Car that uses Lpg and the mix of propane to butane changes from winter to summer. Also the net weight is related to a filling of maximum 80% with 20% (Ullage) safety margin for expansion.
Thanks for sharing, Bernzomatic don’t make true “MAPP” any more. They sell “MAP-PRO” which is propylene that has the same temp rating as propane :) no loss in that regard!
I have a refillable portable Primus propane gas tank which has now expired meaning that licensed people who are able to refill them won't because it will need to be inspected by a person whose licensed to check propane gas tanks & the cost of doing that is more than the tank is worth. That's why I was just going to buy a disposable tank for $13:AUD from Bunnings because the tank which I bought from another hardware shop in 2012 for $56 AUD & had refilled once in 2014 has expired meaning that it might not be worth my while to buy a new refillable tank. So, if I don't refill it for a few years & the gas runs out it's not a huge loss considering that the hardware store charged me $5; to refill it 10 years ago, it's not worth the risk to refill an expired tank !
You don't have to vent it if it's slightly over. The bottle is designed to take more pressure than it is when full. It has to be made that way for expansion and contraction with hot and cold weather. It is more dangerous to vent gas in its liquid form as 1 litre of LPG turns into 115 litres gas. It's far safer to burn it off, than to release it into the atmosphere.
The only hiccup I have found doing this is the main tap on the bigger bottle will spit liquid gas from the center tap spindle sometimes when you turn the bottle over and that can give you a cold burn if you have bare skin plus the exiting gas is a fire risk as well. All fuels can be dangerous, but gas is more so because you cannot see the spill.
You forgot to mention how clean gaz in this green or blue bottles. MAPP is different. If you need refills for camping it’s probably fine. Refills are not clean and cannot be used on plumbing (copper pipes). Btw refills are on your own risk. Better to do it outside and always on vertical position!! Remember liquid gaz at main cylinder should on a lower portion of container. Good luck 👍
It is not legal in Australia to do that. The pump hardware on the end of the hose is not available for sale to the general public. Even if you got a filler piece from a converted car and adapted it to your bottle you run the risk of being prosecuted. The reason is that you would have to vent the bottle as you are filling it just as you would when filling it from a big refill tank and that vented gas would be floating around the pump area. propane is heavier than air so if there is a lack of wind it can hang around close to the ground. If the ratio is right and there is a spark of any sort up it goes.

Grounding is not typically required when refilling propane canisters from larger tanks, as propane in its liquid form doesn’t tend to accumulate static charge as easily as some other flammable substances. However, it's true that static electricity can be generated in certain conditions, particularly in dry environments. That said, the process of transferring propane is generally safe without grounding if you follow standard safety procedures, such as using the correct equipment, avoiding open flames, and refilling in a well-ventilated area.
MAP gas is not the same as propane, not even close. MAP burns hotter, which is important if you need to heat some metal, break some rust, braze some HVAC pipes, etc, witch would be nearly impossible with regular propane. In addition you can use MAP torches in just about any directions, where propane torches can often be limited using them upside down. So yeah, you're not saving 💩 if you're not getting the same product.
You realise MAPP hasn’t been sold since 2008? Everything you get now days that’s called map-pro is a mix of propylene and propane. Its burn temp is 70c more than propane.
No No they definitely can't over fill !! That's why there's a pressure release valve !! And it makes no difference if gas still in bottles or empty when it fills its full and gas from big bottle stops no where near the over pressure volume!!. Ive been filling bottles many times and forgotten and 1 to 2 days later remember or see . 🤓
The problem with your video is that you are comparing refilling a "MAP Gas" purchased bottle to a Propane refilled bottle. These are 2 different gases. Plus, you should be well aware that on the instructions on your yellow Map Gas cylinder and also Propane Cylinder it says do not refill. There is a monetary penalty and jail time for refilling.
Turns out there's only 100 degrees in it without oxygen, so although not like for like, also not much difference running through a bernzomatic head with air.
The state of California will be banning the smaller propane disposable cylinders in the next couple of years because of environmental reasons to be replaced by refillable types. I have not seen any details on how this will be accomplished; perhaps this video will become relevant.
Why so fussy on the weight/fullness, if you live somewhere without major temperature swings it won't be an issue. Even if you live somewhere like a desert there is a margin above factory fill before it's dangerous due to expansion. Second, why purge and freeze? Just to speed it up? You can refill 45kg bottles from each other without either just with patience. Liquid runs down hill after all, and when inverted that's what comes out.
Do not do this! Some of the small propane tanks have very thin walls. It is very easy to overfill the small propane tanks and they may explode. Also that is a MAPP gas tank.
My issue with what you’re doing is you’re doing it right in front of an ignition source, that instantaneous hot water unit has a standing pilot flame. People please don’t decant cylinders near ignition sources our emergency rooms don’t need to deal with your stupidity! Stay safe people
@@VintageEngineRepairs I’m really not trying to be rude but you look at the fact sheets for both gases and Map/pro burns about 72°C hotter than propane and the primary combustion heating value of map/pro is 433 where as propane is 255. Essentially what I’m saying is that the 2 gases are NOT in ACTUAL FACT identical and MAP/PRO burns hotter. I am an air conditioning/refrigeration mechanic and installer and I use MAP/PRO often. I have tried to use propane and it’s a “PANE” in the ass to weld copper with…
@@VintageEngineRepairs not any more it isn't. Yellow is MAPP, blue is Propane and you are refilling with propane/LPG. If you made the video with the blue bottle everyone would praise your ingenuity. I made my comment for people that don't know any better and believe its the same gas, who will be disappointed.
Right I suppose you didn’t catch this isn’t MAPP, this is MAP-PRO. They stopped making MAPP in 2008… MAP-PRO burns at the same temp as propane and it’s a mix of propylene and propane. You don’t have MAPP and it’s not hotter, unless 100f is important to you. That’s how much hotter MAPP-PRO is compared to propane.

I did have spark when I started using that method. It is getting worse.
most gases compress better when really cold.......like it aint cold already
👍🏻👍🏻
The one i want to refill is the oxigen one.
👍🏻👍🏻
Potential Darwin award....
Thanks for watching
I thought it was illegal to refill any propane gas bottles in aus?
Not that I have found, they sell the refill adapter at Woolworths!
I suggest you shop somewhere else there only £5 in uk
I’m not in the uk unfortunately
Nah, I don’t think you’ll get a new full can of mapgas for a fiver anywhere
Get me some they like 15 or 20 quid @ Darlo builders 😂😂😂
Either chat shit or they half full 😅😅
I’m pretty sure this method is illegal in UK and the sale of refill adaptors are illegal too
Always check your countries rules and regulations 👍🏻
@@VintageEngineRepairs I know someone got arrested for selling refillable adaptors and convicted
@@M.E63 Hmm that doesn’t sound right - they’re all over eBay.co.uk being sold within England, without any restrictions, even offering a 6 year warranty.
It seems every time I've tried this, the internal ball check valve engages and wont let the propane out.
Open the valve more slowly 👍
Strange? I haven’t experienced that I’m afraid!
Rip off prices eh . The Refill is a great idea
👍🏻👍🏻
Massive fines if get caught refilling in Australia.
Strange they sell the adapters in Woolworths… www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/1075409295/zerii-propane-gas-refill-adapter-pol-to-1lb-cylinder-tank-coupler-heater-bottle-tool?srsltid=AfmBOorYR1QruG3jJwh3vegSUFdSkBgeZqZ1uE-xUnzEBHpdLCBjGQ5G
the act of refilling can generate static electricity and create a spark. Both containers need to be earthed to prevent a possible nasty accident.
The steel bottles are connected together with a brass adaptor. There's zero chance of an electrostatic buildup in that situation.
@@davelowe1977 I believe you also need an electricial path to the ground, for example the bottle sitting firmly on the ground or an earth strap
@@tomchallis1486 That's only in the case where the two containers are electrically isolated eg a rubber hose filling a vehicle on rubber tyres.
Different gases require different gas nozzels
Most of these 1lb bottles are all the same, but do check before hand :)
@@VintageEngineRepairs the torch end your clown.. the part that shoots the flame. Different gases require different nozzels.
Yellow tanks arent propane, they are MAP gas.
Yeah, that’s right, it’s propylene. For all intense and purposes it’s interchangeable.

Sorry I don’t understand?
In Nederland, Europa, is dit soort gevaarlijk handelen streng verboden!
The refillable containers are an alternative as mentioned.
@@VintageEngineRepairs Daar houden, hier zitten we er niet op te wachten!
So is poor driving, yet Europe produces wonderful dashcam vision 😂
It's not meant for stupid people, so you may just buy a new cannister each time
The Question is, what can you do in Europe.
Open valve slowly folks
Yep
No No they definitely can't over fill !! That's why there's a pressure release valve !! And it makes no difference if gas still in bottles or empty when it fills its full and gas from big bottle stops no where near the over pressure volume!!. Ive been filling bottles many times and forgotten and 1 to 2 days later remember or see . 🤓
The valve is certainly important, it doesn’t hurt to stay within the recommended limits! Thanks for watching :)
Thanks for watching
There should be monetary penalties and jail time for being a little bitch.
How interesting! Thanks for sharing :)
Great video but please DON’T refill any gas cylinder near a combustion source. You are like 1 metre from your instantaneous gas water heater.
Thanks for the feedback and concern 👍🏻👍🏻
Do it in the garden as blowing up the house is a bad idea
Yep
I think it is technically illegal to refill the bottles.
My problem isn’t running out but debris in the tank plugging up the oriface.
Double check your country’s laws, may be best to get the official refillable ones :)
Why are you refilling a bottle marked as Mapp gas with Propane????....2 different fuels and real Mapp gas puts out more heat.
Yeah it’s not true MAPP. It’s Map-pro. Burns the same temp as propane
It's not so much the money you save.
But it seems such waste to throw away a perfectly good gas cylinder that
could be easily used again 👍
Very true!!
Unless you really know what you’re doing, don’t risk it, it can be very dangerous if you get it wrong.🔥☠️
Nothing to get wrong really! But if people don’t feel comfortable I have the alternative filling methods I mention!
Never a good idea to overfill or teach people to so I didn’t. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Do not do this! Some of the small propane tanks have very thin walls. It is very easy to overfill the small propane tanks and they may explode. Also that is a MAPP gas tank.
This isn’t MAPP and it has an over pressure valve. However you can purchase official refill containers as mentioned at the end.
this is a dangers dont do it can be overfilled and EXPLOSED.. filling tank to tank is iligeal in canada
Yeah always following the the laws of your country a good idea. These have safety valves, it stops over-pressurisation.
My issue with what you’re doing is you’re doing it right in front of an ignition source, that instantaneous hot water unit has a standing pilot flame.
People please don’t decant cylinders near ignition sources our emergency rooms don’t need to deal with your stupidity!
Stay safe people
Thanks for watching and sharing
DO NIT DO THIS IT IS SOOOO DANGEROUS TO TRANSFER GAS FROM CYLINDER TO CYLINDER. CRAZY
Thanks for watching …
This is a dangerous practice these cylinders are not meant to be refilled
Check out the alternatives I share at the end if you don’t want to do this.
The refilled can will never burn as hot as original MAPP gas so it’s a complete waste of time. Not to mention releasing gas into the atmosphere……
You can’t buy MAPP gas any more. This is MAP-PRO. Which is a combination of propylene and propane with a heat range identical to propane.
I have tried to use propane and it’s a “PANE” in the ass to weld copper with…
If it’s worth the 72 Celsius, stick with map pro 👍🏻
Mapp will melt gold. LPG from a torch will not. I want my money back.
This isn’t a MAPP bottle
@@VintageEngineRepairs not any more it isn't. Yellow is MAPP, blue is Propane and you are refilling with propane/LPG. If you made the video with the blue bottle everyone would praise your ingenuity. I made my comment for people that don't know any better and believe its the same gas, who will be disappointed.
Bernzomatic don’t make MAPP. It’s now called MAP-PRO which is propylene. Burns the same temp as propane.
That bottle not designed rechargeable.
Dangerous.
You can opt for the refillable ones as mentioned 👍🏻
So, you are claiming I can refill it billions of times? You are refilling it with a lower spec gas.
You realise MAP is propylene?
WHAT ???
Thanks for watching
Very dangerous
No it’s not
Those yellow cans are Map Gas NOT
Propane okay dont do that.
Do you know what Map that gas is? Can you clarify so we’re on the same page?
@@VintageEngineRepairs Yes indeed I do I use mapp gas because It burns hotter than propane.
And that's a fact.
Right I suppose you didn’t catch this isn’t MAPP, this is MAP-PRO. They stopped making MAPP in 2008… MAP-PRO burns at the same
temp as propane and it’s a mix of propylene and propane. You don’t have MAPP and it’s not hotter, unless 100f is important to you. That’s how much hotter MAPP-PRO is compared to propane.
People don’t fall for this stuff it’s dangerous
There are alternatives I share at the end that you may prefer
Don’t know why he’s doing all the fucking around. I just got an adapter for the blowtorch head then connected it to a barbecue hose and regulator that comes with it straight to the bottle.
Good for you 👍🏻
