I purchased one of the Flame King refill valves some time back and it seems to be well made. Just be aware that the FK valve has a small semicircular plastic tab where the empty tank fits that will have to be removed to be able to refill the disposable "non refillable"ones. Or, purchase the FK refillable tanks. 👍🍻
Been doing this for years! Never had an issue. If you want it to refill FAST... I've rigged up a hose set to attach my vacuum pump to the small bottle. Pull 29" of vac on it... hook it up to the big bottle, and the gas gets pulled in in seconds!!! :D
HVAC here, your vac pump needs to be rated for A3 refrigerants, A3 being very flammable gasses, for what it’s worth, many small appliances are running R290, which is propane. (Probably without the added odouriser thats put in Natural gas reticulation), anyway the A3 for us extends to safe fan motors, sealed electrics etc also, since that propane can flash pretty easy, and a vacuum pump exhaust would need to be to a safe place away from the source, distance the pump itself maybe, or an A3 rated vac pump, as if that leaks it could do bad things with fire, compressor oils, smokes and debris. But our heat pumps and refrigeration systems get vac’d out to clear the void of moisture and it makes charging easier… another way is fill what you can straight in, then discharge the vapour rapidly which cools the container, then top it up again to weight. Can be done with a bleed valve on a tee, or vertically discharging enough vapour, then you dont need the pump at all.
@@f1reguy587 - Using a hvac pump. But… nothing in life is safe. After doing it for 25 some years though, I’ll just roll the dice now. ;) Do I recommend anyone else doing it? Of course not! YMMV.
Thanks mate, after watching other, less useful videos on this topic, I’d almost given up. I knew I had to release the internal pressure of the receiver canister, but wasn’t sure how. Time to fill the half dozen bottles I own!

sounds reasonable as long as your bottle is OK I guess but I would prefer to at least check the condition of the seal, I note you are filling MAP gas bottles with propane so while it will still work the flame will not be as hot

I’ve been doing this for a long time now. I started refilling them in my workshop when I ran out and the nearest shop that sells them is half an hour drive away and would have been shut that time of night, then I started using them to light my workshop wood fireplace which ended with me getting another torch and bottle with the workshop torch and bottle ending up inside my house to light the inside fireplace. I have never bothered with venting any unused gas before I refill the bottle, what the logic behind this? Also what is the little valve off to the side used for? I always thought it was for bleeding the tank while filling it but it doesn’t move
Glad it works for you too :) just refilled mine yesterday. I’ll refill a few times before disposing and getting a new can just in case! That is an over pressure valve. A safety feature that is designed to release if too much internal pressure occurs to stop the can failing.
I'm not shilling for FK, but from what I've read their canisters are the only ones approved to be refilled and transported. I have about 4 of the "green stubby" one pound canisters, and 3 or 4 of the taller one pound canisters. I had an original issue that FK were able to walk me through the resolution. Recently when trying to refill a new one pound skinny canister, it would not insert. It turns out that one of the little o-rings had become detached from the prior bottle, and was stuck on the refill valve, preventing the next bottle from threading on. Once I figured that out, it was easy to remedy.
I was hoping your other video would show how to add propane to aerosol cans. Adding air just doesn't atomize the “chemical” that's inside the can very well.
They're are some on Amazon I was going to get both style adapters for external and internal thread. Their are also refillable tanks if you do it alot the over pressure safety valve u pull out also not push in on the side of the bottle you can do that supposedly when filling if it's low. The tank venting in. A place that had a fire Hazzard is the Hazzard I've had 20 pound tanks vent out or fail well only one once on a hot day they too can get overfilled propane is temperature sensitive I'd say
I don't know if Australia is different but Propane tanks are normally Red or Yellow in europe, normal domestic use store bought gas in cylinders like the one you are filling from are Butane, you will not get the higher temperature from Butane that you will get from MAPP gas. I have a Car that uses Lpg and the mix of propane to butane changes from winter to summer. Also the net weight is related to a filling of maximum 80% with 20% (Ullage) safety margin for expansion.
Thanks for sharing, Bernzomatic don’t make true “MAPP” any more. They sell “MAP-PRO” which is propylene that has the same temp rating as propane :) no loss in that regard!
It is not legal in Australia to do that. The pump hardware on the end of the hose is not available for sale to the general public. Even if you got a filler piece from a converted car and adapted it to your bottle you run the risk of being prosecuted. The reason is that you would have to vent the bottle as you are filling it just as you would when filling it from a big refill tank and that vented gas would be floating around the pump area. propane is heavier than air so if there is a lack of wind it can hang around close to the ground. If the ratio is right and there is a spark of any sort up it goes.
You don't have to vent it if it's slightly over. The bottle is designed to take more pressure than it is when full. It has to be made that way for expansion and contraction with hot and cold weather. It is more dangerous to vent gas in its liquid form as 1 litre of LPG turns into 115 litres gas. It's far safer to burn it off, than to release it into the atmosphere.
The only hiccup I have found doing this is the main tap on the bigger bottle will spit liquid gas from the center tap spindle sometimes when you turn the bottle over and that can give you a cold burn if you have bare skin plus the exiting gas is a fire risk as well. All fuels can be dangerous, but gas is more so because you cannot see the spill.
Bernzomatic yellow bottles are “MAP” NOT “MAPP” totally different in every way. Bernzomatic MAP (propylene) is, for all intense and purposes identical in heat to propane, yet cheaper and more available.
People also aren’t up to speed map is just a name at this point. It’s not the old stuff. A channel did a great video on it blue tank vs yellow tank. The main difference was the torch style it came with. The propane tank with a good torch burned only 100F less. Barely a difference to matter if your goal is hand held heat on steel. If you need more you get a 400$ torch kit oxy acetylene
I have a refillable portable Primus propane gas tank which has now expired meaning that licensed people who are able to refill them won't because it will need to be inspected by a person whose licensed to check propane gas tanks & the cost of doing that is more than the tank is worth. That's why I was just going to buy a disposable tank for $13:AUD from Bunnings because the tank which I bought from another hardware shop in 2012 for $56 AUD & had refilled once in 2014 has expired meaning that it might not be worth my while to buy a new refillable tank. So, if I don't refill it for a few years & the gas runs out it's not a huge loss considering that the hardware store charged me $5; to refill it 10 years ago, it's not worth the risk to refill an expired tank !
@andrewbarber2206 someone in the comments mentioned it may have an internal valve? I haven’t come across it myself though. I’ll do some research, thanks for the feedback!
Does anyone make a hose and nozzle set up that connect directly to the BBQ sized propane tank? Seems it would be more convenient than messing with the small bottles.
3 days ago a child was severely burned by a gas BBQ due to leaking gas. I suggest you take extreme care when doing this procedure as it is highly flammable and also can freeze the skin, ironic but double dangerous so please be extra careful. Also be aware of static electricity and do this, if you must, in a well ventilated outdoor area.
Just a word of caution, in North America the canisters are designed as a single use only, and thus are quite thin and the valve isn’t too robust. You can get specially made refillable bottles, but are not really worth it for regular home use.
You have to cool the propane tank to -42 deg C in order to avoid the propane boiling. Hardly possible with household machinery. Why not use Bhutane instead, if you are not going to camp in below zero temperature?
That’s not true.. -42c is the point at which propane turns from a gas to a liquid at atmospheric pressure. However it’s not only cold but it’s under pressure therefore you can be at much warmer temperatures and it will remain a liquid.
Grounding is not typically required when refilling propane canisters from larger tanks, as propane in its liquid form doesn’t tend to accumulate static charge as easily as some other flammable substances. However, it's true that static electricity can be generated in certain conditions, particularly in dry environments. That said, the process of transferring propane is generally safe without grounding if you follow standard safety procedures, such as using the correct equipment, avoiding open flames, and refilling in a well-ventilated area.
The problem is that those bottles aren’t meant for reuse so are thinner walled than those designed for refilling. You also can’t inspect the insides for corrosion
@@M.E63 Hmm that doesn’t sound right - they’re all over eBay.co.uk being sold within England, without any restrictions, even offering a 6 year warranty.
Can I please ask a coil question. I think I know the answer but I would be more confident if you would confirm it for me. The primary coil is 3.250K ohms , the secondary coil is 3.629K ohms . When I do the test to see if it being caused by resisters etc. the first reading from the armature to spark plug cable is 3.259K ohms and the reading from the spark plug lead to the kill switch tab is 6.250K ohms.😯😲
Hey! Very interesting and it’s not working properly? If you’ve checked all connections and wires are secure and you’re not getting good spark, that it could be coil related. Modern coils are a bit of a nusience. I recommend taking your machine to the shop with the coil off, seeing if they have a spare one to quickly throw on and if it works buy it, if not, then you know it is unlikely your issue. Either way, after that bring them back a few coffees as a thank you!
@@VintageEngineRepairs Thank you. I purchased the Oleo-Mac pole pruner PPX270 in 2014. I haven't used it for about 18 months. It does have some spark, I am not sure how strong, I have ordered a Mityvac pressure and vacuum pump and a Walbro tool kit. So I haven't done much on the carb as yet. I did check all connections and flushed the fuel tank and filled with fresh fuel. I just can't get it to kick over, it doesn't even sound as though it will kick over. I priced a new coil and it was $375.00. So I am waiting for the Mityvac and tool kit.
All good :) When you take the spark plug out, and the reconnect it to the Ht lead, rest it on something metal on the machine, turn the engine on and pull the pull cord, do you get spark?
@@VintageEngineRepairs No. I am not sure if I have enough things connected. I replaced the coil and set it with the business card. I tried as you suggested but no spark I have the trigger handle off at the moment so I'm not sure if anything else needs to be connected to get spark. I did have spark when I started using that method. It is getting worse.

@@VintageEngineRepairs - I don't know the weight unit that you are using. Typically, the bottle can contains 1 lb of lpg. I don't think the weight of the gas is 1lb?
@@tuan-vu...UA-cam He is using grams as the measurement. 1000g is 1kg 2.202lbs is 1kg/1000g , so 1.0lb pound is approximately 453g. His cylinder holds 0.89lb of gas.
I don't understand the reason for releasing the existing pressure. There are no additional propellants, just the propane turning to gas. You are venting out propane to simply fill it with propane. (you can get the tare weight by simply using the bottle until it won't work any more)
@ That doesn't make any sense. I don't empty the tank in my car before I refill it. Unless you are putting a metered amount in, the amount already in the tank should not matter, whether it's empty, 1/2 empty, or 3/4 full. With the FK adapter, you fill it until liquid propane exits the bleed port. If the canister was 1/2 full to start with, you only put in the other half.
I would not fill yellow (MAPP) gas canisters with propane. MAPP gas burns much hotter than propane, and when you want that hotter temperature, you don't want to think you are using MAPP gas but actually are using propane.
MAP gas is not the same as propane, not even close. MAP burns hotter, which is important if you need to heat some metal, break some rust, braze some HVAC pipes, etc, witch would be nearly impossible with regular propane. In addition you can use MAP torches in just about any directions, where propane torches can often be limited using them upside down. So yeah, you're not saving 💩 if you're not getting the same product.
You realise MAPP hasn’t been sold since 2008? Everything you get now days that’s called map-pro is a mix of propylene and propane. Its burn temp is 70c more than propane.
No No they definitely can't over fill !! That's why there's a pressure release valve !! And it makes no difference if gas still in bottles or empty when it fills its full and gas from big bottle stops no where near the over pressure volume!!. Ive been filling bottles many times and forgotten and 1 to 2 days later remember or see . 🤓

Handy "IF" you use thebig tanks, But otherwise they are expensive to rent bottle, refill etc
We can’t rent them here, you just pay for the refill and can then “decant” it?
Well what i have read is if is not a refillable one don't. They are not designed to do so and the stress on bottle could cause it to ruptured.
They make refillable ones I share right at the end of the video :)
Just a word of caution, in North America the canisters are designed as a single use only, and thus are quite thin and the valve isn’t too robust. You can get specially made refillable bottles, but are not really worth it for regular home use.
Spot on mate :) I share the alternative refillable options In the video! 👍🏻
Same in Australia. This method is just asking for trouble.
@jackfromthe60s stop talking crap. They are filled when you buy them, what is the difference refilling them
@@sammyd7857 are you really that dull?
@@jackfromthe60s I can tell you are sharp as a tack. Do you think the composition of the metal changes when it is refilled.
I don’t know about the Bernzomatic cylinders you have, but my Bunnings Tradeflame 400g MAP cylinder says DO NOT REFILL on the label.
There are refillable alternatives in the video 👍🏻
You have to cool the propane tank to -42 deg C in order to avoid the propane boiling. Hardly possible with household machinery. Why not use Bhutane instead, if you are not going to camp in below zero temperature?
That’s not true.. -42c is the point at which propane turns from a gas to a liquid at atmospheric pressure. However it’s not only cold but it’s under pressure therefore you can be at much warmer temperatures and it will remain a liquid.
The process is called decanting gas
👍🏻
Does anyone know if one can fill a 3lb propane tank from a regular size grill tank (16 lb? 11lb?)?
I don’t see why not!
You cannot without an adaptor. Propane tanks have a different and bigger threading.
the act of refilling can generate static electricity and create a spark. Both containers need to be earthed to prevent a possible nasty accident.
The steel bottles are connected together with a brass adaptor. There's zero chance of an electrostatic buildup in that situation.
@@davelowe1977 I believe you also need an electricial path to the ground, for example the bottle sitting firmly on the ground or an earth strap
@@tomchallis1486 That's only in the case where the two containers are electrically isolated eg a rubber hose filling a vehicle on rubber tyres.
Yeah. You're not a refrigeration mechanic are you.
The problem is that those bottles aren’t meant for reuse so are thinner walled than those designed for refilling. You also can’t inspect the insides for corrosion
👍🏻👍🏻
I suggest you shop somewhere else there only £5 in uk
I’m not in the uk unfortunately
Nah, I don’t think you’ll get a new full can of mapgas for a fiver anywhere
Get me some they like 15 or 20 quid @ Darlo builders 😂😂😂
Either chat shit or they half full 😅😅
Yeah five pounds ! Too much ! The GREEDY UK GOVERNMENT ! Wants it's TAXES ! ON IT !
Just wondering why you are filling a MAP gas bottle with LPG ??? Okay for firelighting I suppose, but MAP gasa butns hot enough to braze weld.
You’re confusing MAP-PRO (what I have here) and MAPP
@@VintageEngineRepairs oh, ok my apologies !
It seems every time I've tried this, the internal ball check valve engages and wont let the propane out.
Open the valve more slowly 👍
Strange? I haven’t experienced that I’m afraid!
The one i want to refill is the oxigen one.
👍🏻👍🏻
most gases compress better when really cold.......like it aint cold already
👍🏻👍🏻
Thank mate very important information
Glad it helped!
A good set of leather gloves would be an idea
Yep!
I’m pretty sure this method is illegal in UK and the sale of refill adaptors are illegal too
Always check your countries rules and regulations 👍🏻
@@VintageEngineRepairs I know someone got arrested for selling refillable adaptors and convicted
In Nederland, Europa, is dit soort gevaarlijk handelen streng verboden!
The refillable containers are an alternative as mentioned.
@@VintageEngineRepairs Daar houden, hier zitten we er niet op te wachten!
So is poor driving, yet Europe produces wonderful dashcam vision 😂
It's not meant for stupid people, so you may just buy a new cannister each time
The Question is, what can you do in Europe.
I thought it was illegal to refill any propane gas bottles in aus?
Not that I have found, they sell the refill adapter at Woolworths!
Massive fines if get caught refilling in Australia.
Strange they sell the adapters in Woolworths… www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/1075409295/zerii-propane-gas-refill-adapter-pol-to-1lb-cylinder-tank-coupler-heater-bottle-tool?srsltid=AfmBOorYR1QruG3jJwh3vegSUFdSkBgeZqZ1uE-xUnzEBHpdLCBjGQ5G
Yellow tanks arent propane, they are MAP gas.
Yeah, that’s right, it’s propylene. For all intense and purposes it’s interchangeable.
Before 399... After 795.... So the reality, is the bottle is half empty or 3/4 empty after refilling?
Hmm no, 399 is bottle weight, 795 is gas + bottle weight.
Open valve slowly folks
Yep
Rip off prices eh . The Refill is a great idea

@@VintageEngineRepairs the torch end your clown.. the part that shoots the flame. Different gases require different nozzels.
Doesn't works for me
Sorry to hear it!
Do it in the garden as blowing up the house is a bad idea
Yep
I don't understand the reason for releasing the existing pressure. There are no additional propellants, just the propane turning to gas. You are venting out propane to simply fill it with propane. (you can get the tare weight by simply using the bottle until it won't work any more)
Hey, you’re venting excess propane to avoid it being over filled.
@VC-Toronto ok :) you do it your way, I’ll continue to do it mine.
I would not fill yellow (MAPP) gas canisters with propane. MAPP gas burns much hotter than propane, and when you want that hotter temperature, you don't want to think you are using MAPP gas but actually are using propane.
It burns about 60 degrees hotter. This isn’t MAPP. You cannot buy true MAPP any more. This is MAP-PRO.
100 % illegal in australia that liquid is compressed a 270 times so it must only be upright
Woolworths sells the adapters 🤣
Unlimited death trap. Thats why it is illegal in the states.
There are a few alternatives at the end you may prefer 👍🏻
No No they definitely can't over fill !! That's why there's a pressure release valve !! And it makes no difference if gas still in bottles or empty when it fills its full and gas from big bottle stops no where near the over pressure volume!!. Ive been filling bottles many times and forgotten and 1 to 2 days later remember or see . 🤓
The valve is certainly important, it doesn’t hurt to stay within the recommended limits! Thanks for watching :)
