The NFL Playoff format is one of the most high-pressure environments in all of professional sports, with a game that is already determined by inches in some cases now being broadcast to millions in a win-or-go-home scenario. Considering that NFL referees are already not known for their stunning accuracy, this has caused controversy on more than a few occasions to put it lightly. This video lays out some of the most infamous calls in playoff history and the waves they made in affecting the sport for years to come.
Welcome to Set the Edge, a channel dedicated to telling NFL stories the way they deserve to be told. If you enjoyed the video, please consider leaving a like and subscribing, it really goes a long way. Thanks for watching!

The megatron one was atrocious. He caught it, both feet in obviously. Went to the ground. Which means he is down in the end zone so touchdown. He drops the ball as he stands up and somehow that's ruled incomplete. A total embarrassment by NFL officiating.
tyreek hill's call with his ex is prolly worse
@@CBielski87 lmao he didn’t do anything
@@CBielski87 So, all you heard were the headlines and such right when it happened, and none of the rest of it.
As in, the part where the news station admitted they heavily edited the recording (including cutting out the part where she essentially admitted to having broken the kid's arm...or at least admitting Tyreek had nothing to do with it and admitting to being physical with him herself) because they thought that part wasn't "newsworthy".
Basically, that reporter wanted to make a name for herself as the journalist who brought down another athlete....and you swallowed it.
Not near as atrocious as the dez Bryant play lol..I knew the NFL was a money scam after that
I mean, the call was wrong but I guess I could see what they were thinking
that saints no-call is truly a textbook example of pass interference. it checks all of the boxes.
That call made me absolutely hurl. I was sickened
The second call yes the first one I could have gone either way.
And the ref was right there. A few feet away looking directly at the play. It's mind boggling.
reminds me of a tackle Kam Chancellor made that was flagged by the refs, but then literally used as an example of how the NFL wanted players to tackle later.
As a die-hard saints fan, that is just so freaking painful. I can be super happy and then someone mentions that play and I just become sad. Like really really sad.

TO BE FAIR, the Tuck Rule was an actual rule (albeit a shit one) which was technically called correctly.
Exactly! That’s not a shitty call, that’s how the rules worked at the time. It’s not a “technicality” that robbed the Raiders, that’s the rule. You can argue it’s a shitty rule and was rightfully removed, but can’t blame the refs for following it and making the right call.
Agreed, infact it was a great call. Shitty rule but the fact that the refs knew it and called it was a rare case of them actually doing their jobs correctly. Also some Patriots, especially Belichick, knew about it because it was called against the Pats earlier in the year when playing the Jets.
TO BE FAIR if the refs did there job and watched it frame by frame when the ball leaves Bradys hand hes not moving his arm, hes hit with his arm in a bend, not in motion.
Tuck rule literally won the Jets the game the week prior to when everyone remembers it.
It was also the right call - that seems to sometimes get lost in how stupid the rule was

Good video, except literally everyone outside of Detroit forgets that the wild card game between the lions and the cowboys, the game before the dez catch, the lions got screwed on a picked up pass interference call that likely would have one them that game, so the dez play wouldn't have ever had a chance to happen.
The refs probably figured they were saving Lion's fans feelings and giving them the L 1 week earlier instead of the inevitable one week later.
I like to think of the Dez catch of good old fashioned Karma. That picked up flag was BS
I think the Lions stood a good chance of beating Green Bay that year as well. We had the number two ranked defense in the league and for good reason. As for our offense? Stafford and Megatron, nuff said.
I’m convinced the NFL wanted the Rams to make the Super Bowl in 2018 because their franchise just moved to LA and built a massive new stadium so they needed to increase the cash flow
That’s always been my theory, I suspect the nfl wanted an LA team in the super bowl and I hate them for it because it was such a blatant missed call
It's not the NFL fault that Drew Brees threw an interception in overtime
And til this day, there’s no rams fan in LA
The NFL wanted the rams in the Super Bowl, because they were the better matchup for the patriots
But they probably made up for the BountyGate Scandal that should’ve had Brett Favre in the Super Bowl or Manning Winning Again in Miami…but Everything for the people of Katrina. Just like the Patriots Winning for the country in ‘01 or Boston Strong where the Redsox won ‘13. At least the Patriots Were Consistently Good!

Lol sure bro
@@justbecause7402 it is rigged. At this point there’s so much evidence it’s hard to deny. Only thing that can be more concrete is if the league comes out and says it, but the refs had before which is close enough.
The refs aren't the ones that made the 49ers think Jimmy G, George Kittle, and a bunch of no-name wide receivers could keep pace with the Chiefs offense.
Santa Clara had been carried by their running game in the playoffs, was against a bad run defense and decided to not run the ball.
There's also one from the 1979 AFC Championship. Against the Steelers, Oilers receiver Mike Renfro made a catch in the back of the end-zone, got two feet down, but they ruled it incomplete. They didn't have instant replay, but it was clear and obvious that he got both feet down. The Steelers won the game in O.T and went on to beat the Cowboys in the Super Bowl.
The Steelers/Seahawks game was where I knew the NFL was jobbing teams. That game was a disgrace.
The NFL has always favored the Steelers and classic teams with big markets.

@DaFuzzBearYT ah that explains it
@@cameronpain1422, how about the Cowboys?
One could also mention the end of the 2002 Wild Card game between the Giants and 49ers where the intended target after the botched field goal attempt was actually an eligible receiver, which if called correctly would have given the Giants a chance to win with a chip shot field goal following a pass interference. Of course, the Giants did a lot to lose the game, including breakdowns on both sides of the ball to blow a huge lead and not one, but two bad snaps cost the Giants field goal opportunities.
the SB being talked about sounded awfully similar to the Packers Bucs NFC Championship game we just saw

I love that the NFL is still trying to figure out what a fucking catch is. Let me clarify this for them; it is preferable for an imperfect rule to incorrectly deem some non-catches as catches than for an imperfect rule to take away legit catches. I cant imagine how hard it was for Brees to retire. After getting that close so many times to a superbowl only to get screwed over or beaten in a heart breaking fashion. If he didn't atleast have his one ring, I wonder if he'd be in a Big Ben situation playing well past his prime.
Dez's "catch" was almost as technical as it gets, 2 feet + a third that secures possession, made a football move (him diving) this also secures possession. The ball never touched the ground, his arm was underneath it. Idk how this isn't a catch
He definitely caught it. But I always thought of it as karma for the PI call that got picked up against detroit just the round prior.
If karma is the reason then we can carousel around the league for decades and say well all bad calls are karma for another...The Cowboys got karma for the Detroit game. The Saints got karma for trying to maim and hospitalize Brett Favre and on and on we go....

Not liking a rule doesn't make it a bad call.
The "bad call" would be (A) Implementing an unnecessary and stupid rule, and (B) that particular call might have been a bad interpretation of the rule for what it was intended to do, specifically eliminating fumble calls because of errant motion towards the body on attempted passes.

Don't let it go, but actually do some research on the rule and its use. It's painted like it was this totally obscure rule that was never used. That saints vs rams call was ridiculous how they didn’t call that. Unbelievable
I disagree wholeheartedly on your point that the Seahawks could've done more to "seize control of" Super Bowl XL. What could they have done that another boneheaded call wouldn't have immediately negated? A team that knows that the field is tilted against them because of the refs is going to second-guess every call they make, because they have no way to be sure that anything is going to work. Once the Steelers scored after the interception, the Seahawks' will was broken.
That game was all the evidence I needed to see that the NFL plays favorites and officiates accordingly. All of these controversies become a lot easier to understand once you see them from the standpoint of "which team is more marketable/has the better story".
oh hush.... the Steelers flat out played the cry hawks that day... 75 yd TD run, trick play by a wr.. Seahawks D was embarrassed. Also your kicker missed two in a dome! refs get no love man. That's a really fucking hard job. Finding a great ref is harder than finding a great ball player.
I honestly thought the Cleveland Browns Bottlegate was going to be on here, because that was a controversy where the refs LITERALLY broke a simple rule by reviewing a play and overturning the initial call on the play, even though another play had already been run.
People don’t realize that the Patriots was the victim of the tuck rule earlier in that season
Or that the tuck rule was called a large number of times that it was in the rule book
