It's official! PatmanQC is the most complete arcade reviewer of all time. _Nobody_ talks about Time Traveler. I bet it was a tough job to get footage of this game. I'm thoroughly impressed with this video.
I remember playing this game about 25-years ago in a Chuck E. Cheese. I thought it was the coolest arcade machine ever. It was the only time I ever played it, but I couldn't finish the game (you couldn't continue the game wherever you wanted- the only way to get continues was to buy Reversal Cubes, which were only available at a few specific points). Years later, Time Traveler became one of the most obscure games on UA-cam. It was really tough to find footage of the game. Since the gameplay was quite similar to Dragon's Lair, I was always reminded of Time Traveler whenever I saw that one. In which case, I would try to check up and see if anybody had posted a playthrough of Time Traveler, just so I could see the ending. It wasn't until just a couple years ago that people were able to show it off from the DVD version. Overall, I think Time Traveler is the coolest 3D game of all time. That is very nice of you to say. It was a bit tough To find footage but the hardest part was trying to make a decent thumbnail because the Video was such low-quality. It's a really cool spectacle of the game and something that needs to be seen in person to truly appreciate it. Thanks again

In 1991 I was working at an arcade in a small college town (College Station, Tx). This game didn't do very well, money-wise. I suppose the $1 per play price tag kept most of our college student clientele away from the game. But as Patman mentioned, Street Fighter 2 came out shortly afterwards and pretty much dominated the scene (and the quarters). So we moved Time Traveler to the back corner to die a slow death.
Well done, Patman. These video game documentaries are an important part of our history! I'm happy you're doing them so future generations can see what us 'arcade kids' grew up with.

I saw this in the arcade around 91/92. I didn't play it because it was much more expensive than all the other arcade games, but I was highly impressed by the holographic effect.
It was very impressive and still holds up today. Also very expensive as it was $0.75 to play
I remember people playing this game and they would spend a dollar for about one minute of play, which was a lot back then.

I never tried this game because the cost was too high. I tried Dragon's Lair once. The reaction time required for that is just insane. Right off the bat you die, and again, and again. Then it wants another dollar? Bah!
Some time later I watched a guy play through perfectly, acting like he was utterly bored. That's the problem all these fast twitch FMV games had. Zero replay value once you memorized the sole correct path. One PC game put it right in the title "Critical Path". Then Disney built the non-interactive version in the original "Star Tours".
WOW! haven't seen this in ages! used to play it every time my family would take a trip to branson at some arcade! cant wait to watch this!

This is the FIRST arcade machine I remember as a child.
The first arcade game I recall is a black and white bowling game from 1978
I remember seeing this game only once as a kid back in the 90s. It was amazing and it's one of the most memorable arcade games I ever experienced.
My favorite character was the wobbling wizard who appeared periodically. “Maybe you shoulda ducked!”

Did you know, Sega made custum Time Traveler tokens fir this Arcade game? I had one! Also, the game play has another mode where you sometimes had to shoot like rapid fire on some scenes. Lastly, some of the Arcade cabinets were used in Warner Brothers warehouse stores with a cartoon hologram
Stoked you made this. They had it at Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum in Michigan. It seriously looked amazing and played like shit. You also had to remortgage your house to beat it. Anyway, I'm gonna actually watch your video now :)

That's my memory too lol. My mom took me to play it at a Time Out arcade at Madison Square Mall in Huntsville, Alabama when I was a kid because she saw a segment about it on Good Morning America or some morning show like that and she thought it looked cool. It was expensive as hell and the controls sucked worse than Shaq Fu but it looked pretty amazing and like everyone else, I tried to touch the visuals.
It made learning the patterns in Dragon's Lair look like child's play in comparison. It wasn't fun enough to figure out.
I played that game at the butterfly room in Warren Michigan when I was 6 years old and almost beaten it until I touched that last hologram.
I remember GamePro and EGM talking this up back in the day, and in late '92 I got to play one at an arcade. It was a cool experience, but I remember playing it a couple of times and moving on to the Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder machine that they had playing on a GIANT projector screen. Still, I'm glad I got to experience the actual machine.

This was in every casino arcade in Vegas it got old real quick and once the novelty wore off it was the least played game along with those laserdisc games like Dragons Lair; btw my cousin was director of the Dragons Lair remake though I never played it

I had so wanted this game to be available for the 3DS while the handheld was still popular.
This and Stun Runner totally blew me away when I was a kid. I would watch the attract mode for 30 minutes after the quarters ran out it was just so cool.

The first place i ever saw this was disneylands double deck arcade. nobody played the thing. i also think it was $1. nobody i know ever saw this game or played it. i only played it a handful of times. it's hard to describe to people how awesome this thing looked. you really have to see it in person.

I remember playing this in 1990 at the mineshaft arcade in Placer California when I was a kid. It blew me away and set the stage for what I thought was VR. Littlie did i know that it would be 30 years tell I actually owned a VR gaming system.
I remember this in the arcade, I was around 17 yrs old. I remember though it being expensive like over a dollar, everyone would huddle around it and you could barely ever play it because so many wanted to play. it was definitely amazing to watch back then. I remember seeing actual people popping up from the flat table or game system, at the time it was crazy.
I first saw this in an arcade at Newquay Cornwall when we was on holiday and people were queuing out the door into the street to play and it was £2 a go which was a lot to pay back then.
My dad queud with me for around an hour for us to have a go and it looked amazing for the time and worth every penny for the visual experience more than the game play.
Thanks for doing the documentary its brought back some good memories for me.

I remember when this game came out. I spent a ton of quarters but I became a master at it. Only had to use 1 quarter to beat it and I felt like a real champion :) Great video and thanks for the memories.

i continue to absolutely love your channel! i remember seeing time traveler as a kid, on family vacation at an arcade (that sadly no longer exists) in duluth, minnesota. at the time, while the game caught my attention and curiosity initially, i never actually played it because my tweenage self was immediately distracted by, and more drawn to, the then-blossoming 3d polygonal revolution, with bigger, louder games like daytona usa and cruis'n that i immediately went and spent all my time on instead. maybe i'm not the only one, and that's why it seems i never saw time traveler anywhere else outside of that one arcade? i never saw anyone else really play it either - just lots of people looking at it out of curiosity but then going to spend their money on something else. or maybe i was just too young to fully appreciate it, as now as an adult i would absolutely play this if i ever see it again.

Only place I ever saw this was at the Disneyland arcade in Tomorrowland. Many memories!

I miss the Starcade in Tomorrowland SO MUCH. Much like the Peoplemover track that still occupies the center of Tomorrowland, the Starcade sign that still remains unmoved and unchanged since the 80’s (at least since my last visit in September 2019) is almost mocking and reminding me of things I love but will never see or experience again outside of my memories. For me, it’s a bit of irony that the section of the park called Tomorrowland holds the only 2 examples (that I can think of) of shut-down/closed/former attractions that still remain largely unaltered in their outside appearance and also haven’t yet experienced much effort towards making changes that could either completely repurpose them or even just change their outside appearance. The length of time since their closures just adds more weirdness. The Starcade sign is still exactly in the same spot and (to really twist the knife and mock us since just underneath, the entrance is locked up tight) it still gets turned on nice and bright for everyone to see. Since the PeopleMover track and the original boarding location is situated at the center of the land and the ride’s track is actually attached/built into the surrounding buildings, it’s easily the most unique example of an attraction that no longer operates and yet is still mostly intact. It hasn’t been demolished or had sections redecorated or altered or even experienced a major repurposing. This is especially unique when compared with other attractions that have closed and how the surrounding areas would noticeably change in a relatively short time frame following the closure of an attraction. While Disney has utilized its centralized setting above guests as a stage for their actors to use to allow their skits to be easily watched by any guests in the land, and have installed moving spots on the majority of the remaining track, it hasn’t experienced much else as far as towards efforts to make the types of changes normally seen everywhere else in the park. I can’t think of another attraction that got shut down and didn’t experience almost immediate alterations or repurposing, especially compared to Disney World because Disneyland is very limited with the space they have to work with. I often wonder if Disneyland had never changed the PeopleMover into the Rocket Rods, if we would still have an operating PeopleMover today...

Oh man I’m so glad you covered this one! When I was 17 in 91 I worked at a movie theater and was in charge of emptying the arcade machines. We had this one and I’d set it for free play at work. Still never beat it. I heard this machine is going for insane money now. BTW everyone was taking about your channel in a post on the Arcade1up FB group. You got a lot of fans my man! I remember this one! The arcade at my local mall got one back in '91 for a short time, and the 3-D was truly stunning. Unfortunately, I didn't get to play it, as there was a crowd, and my girlfriend at the time was less than impressed with watching others play, as she was blind in one eye, so she couldn't see the 3-D effect!
I remember playing this once in an arcade, I don't think it's possible to truly capture the novelty of this game if you weren't around at the time.

I had totally forgotten about this thing! I had the chance to see it in person somewhere, and as a kid was totally blown away. Thanks for making this video and telling the story of a forgotten piece of gaming history. Oh, and that footage of a complete, working RDI Halcyon being used in game development was awesome!

I remember seeing this in an arcade in the early 90s, though it was very expensive at a buck per play. I usually would wait to see someone else play, but I’d never see anyone last long, and the controls looked to be rather cumbersome. It did at least look awesome, though, and you had to see it in person to do justice.

Great vid! What a fun flash-back to a game I had totally forgotten about, I used to play this at an arcade in San Diego, and all I recall is how bad I sucked at it, but it was holograms, so still awesome!
I played one of these at Disney Land many years ago. I bumped into the cabinet, but not very hard, then the whole thing froze and crashed and stayed that way!

I loved this game when it came out. I played it so much and never beat it. I have the Digital Leisure version, and some friends of mine from the Daphne community were able to get me a laser rip. Have yet to play the arcade version on emu, but would love to come across and original one of these. Also I remember, our local movie theater had the fighting game. I rarely played it, as the only way to get to it was to buy a ticket for a movie.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries They were just ahead of the curve. Green screen is how 90% of today's action movies are made. Actually, it's kind of disappointing because whenever you see an impressive looking "set" in a movie today, you know it's not real.

I played Time Traveler at a Cincinnati Mall which is now closed. And I played Holosumem at The Louisville Motor Speedway Arcade, Mini Golf and Go Kart track back in 92. Also met Richard Petty there too.

I saw/played Time Traveler only once. It was at my local bowling alley. You're right that it really has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Even my Dad, who didn't play video games at all, was impressed. The effect is like no other game I've ever played, so it was definitely worth the .75 for the novelty alone...but the gameplay is really limited, so it feels more like a tech demo. Never even heard of Holosseum before, so you taught me something there. It doesn't sounds like I missed much, though.
Thanks for all the hard work on these. They're interesting, high-quality, and have a nice dash of humor. When I watch these, I either learn something now or have a nice trip down memory lane--often both.

This was dead center in the middle of the Emlenton truck plaza when I was a kid and I was blown away by the grandeur of it. It was a spectacle and got the most attention of people walking by at the time. Not too many people remember it, but It made a lasting impression on me for sure.

For whatever reason, FMV games tended to have subpar acting, and cheesy dialogue. The novelty of the 3d aspect made it easier to over look though.

Very nice. I played Time Traveler only one time when we went to Branson Missouri on vacation when I was a first grader in 1991. It was at the old arcade/mini golf/go-kart track called "Thunder Road" (now the site of a Titanic Museum). It spooked me a little because it looked like real people being stabbed with knives and burned by comets, but it made me want to know how it worked, too. The kids at school didn't believe me when I described it to them.

I had one of these at a Family Arcade near me. It was a magical machine. As kids we couldn’t figure it out. Still to this day my cousin and I will talk about our experiences with it because we have to make sure we weren’t hallucinating.
Very cool. You are right, it's a must-see in person. My mind is still blown by how these holograms work. Why we still don't see holograms used in modern day? Wish the video went further into the hologram tech.
As a young student, I went on a field trip to another school's science fair where they had a hologram on display.
I could not believe my eyes as I stood looking at an object that wasn't there, and wondered to myself where and how such technology could be used.
It never occurred to me that it could be used in videogames.

I remember this was at Putt Putt Golf and Games in Norfolk VA around '91 or '92. It wasn't there long though. Neat at the time!

Played this in the cleanest arcade in NYC, the 34th and Penn station arcade, it was amazing to look at, not to mention the FMV portion responded quick, I even played the upgrade, however the digitized characters looked way better than its sprite counterpart in every way, thanks for the memories

LaserDisc pressed by Pioneer USA. The total running time of the disc is 28 minutes, which has the same content on both sides (common practice). The LaserDisc Database has 130 such game discs in it on LD, LD-ROM, LD-ROM2, and MEGA-LD. This was on a standard LD in CAV. I have 5 LD players, one of which is an industrial model that will play all those formats.

I've been hoping you would do this one since I started watching your channel. Ten year old me wanted to play this so badly, but at my local arcade it was a dollar and a half to play, and I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for one credit.

I remember seeing this at the Space Needle in Gatlinburg TN. 8th grade. B.O.S. Crew represented in that town. We were just some skaters trying to find spot. Really though is was an incredible time. I saw the prototype of MK1 being tested and the fatalities were different inputs. And the also trifecta of gaming goodness was Street Fighter 2 on a monitor that made the characters larger than us...
Went back 2 years later and the place was in shambles. 😥
