If I recall correctly, they have yet to say what his real name in in Japan, in fact the scene in Sonic Generations where Classic Tails calls him "Robotnik" and he responds with "Nobody calls me that name anymore" was exclusive to the western version of the game. I still can't figure out what the frig Japan called Gerald and Maria Robotnik in their version of SA2.
Wayne Ekeh No no, I know that and I thank you for the info, but I'm just saying that on Sonic Team's part, making their last name Eggman is really lame.
Except it gets a lot of details wrong, like Sonic being a Japanese game 'localized' for America. It wasn't. It was always a joint creation of Sega of America and Sega of Japan. Many iconic and integral aspects of the Sonic franchise are American inventions - Tails's name, Sonic's appearance and color etc. Hell, Sonic wouldn't even _be_ a hedgehog if it wasn't for American input. So this idea that 'Eggman' was his original name and 'Robotnik' is some bastardized Americanization of a Japanese game and character is incorrect. 'Robotnik' is equally original and official as 'Eggman' is.
sonic generations, we finally got to see a truly fun and enjoyable version of our buggiest enemies and stages from previous games, and see the hits from games before
See, this is why you pay attention to cutscenes. I always get annoyed when people say that they 'changed' his name to Eggman, for the reasons you mentioned in the video. Interesting little theories at the end there by the way. :)
But they did change his name to Eggman. Before Sonic Adventure, he was always called Robotnik in the west. They call him Robotnik once in that one cutscene in Sonic Adventure, and they've never called him it again once since, apart from an off-hand joke in Generations.
+Gnoggin My favorite Sonic game for Classic was Sonic 2 since it was really fun to play the story with a friend (Even though we sucked) and I enjoyed the special stages in this one more than others. For Modern my favorite is Sonic Adventure 2. I played the first level on that game like 1000 times because it was an easy way to grab like 400 rings in the bank with an awesome soundtrack. I really enjoyed spending time raising chao and having them compete with each other and I really wish they would bring that back someday. I also found it really interesting to have characters like Tails and Knuckles to do something DIFFERENT and feel relevant while Sonic still held that "Go Fast" feeling. I understand that this game has A LOT of flaws with camera angles and all that jazz but I was like 8 and it didn't bother me so much since I could still win with ease even with all the bugs.
My favorite Sonic game is possibly Sonic CD. I just absolutely adore the amazing and creative level design in that game. The time traveling mechanic makes it even better.
duo1666 I think not knowing who robotnic is is mostly a problem with non-sonic fans though, so they wouldn't read that stuff. That, and a lot of people just don't read in general, so those people wouldn't see it either.
I call him "Eggman" for the same reason Sonic does, it's somewhat insulting. It sounds like "egg head," a derogatory term used to refer to smart people, and it references his egg shaped body.
At the risk of die-hard sonic fans raging over me mentioning the anime: during the episodes where Shadow comes into the series, Eggman says his great uncle was Robotnik.
Surprised this didn't tie back into Ivo Kintobor; you came surprisingly close! Julian changed his name to Ivo after his ancestor and Robotnik, which is Kintobor backwards. Of course, this is all comic canon, so who knows how relevant it is. :P
I've always preferred to call him Robotnik just because... well, like you said, more sinister. Easier to take seriously. Although I've heard that in the song, "the Walrus" is supposed to be Death. So if Eggman=Walrus=Death, that's... kinda sinister too.
One thing I wondered... wasn't Maria Gerald Robotnik's granddaughter? And Eggman is Gerald Robotnik's grandson. Maria was friends with the Commander's family from Shadow the Hedgehog while they were on the Space Colony Ark. But they never explain WHY WITHIN THE HELL Gerald brought a second family along the Ark. Wasn't he just on a personal vendetta?
In Sonic X there was another Robotnik who was Eggman's grandfather. I watched it as a kid and misinterpreted it as Robotnik and Eggman being separate people in the same family line, as if there were only one Robotnik and he was Eggman's grandpa, rather than it being their family name. I feel informed. I still like Eggman more than Ivo Robotnik though. The Eggman I first saw was more a likeable character, and more whimsical than his earlier portrayals.
My first sonic game was Sonic Heroes on the Gamecube. It was also my first non-portable game ever. I loved it all the way up until I got another game, and then sonic games went farther and farther down the list... My favorites are the Sonic Advance games, because those are the only ones I still own and play... possibly because of my GBA bias.
Samir Malik wh- I'm not even going to dispute that, I'm just confused as to why you said it at all. Maybe I worded my comment badly or something... because I didn't try to make any implications like that.
When I heard him being called Eggman in Adventure, I assumed it was a reboot/prequel because of the insulting joke. Also, the English Sonic Advance game manual says that Eggman, himself, prefers to be called Robotnik. My favorite sonice game, though, is Adventure 2
When I was young I had the Sonic & Knuckles collection pre-installed on my PC which contained Sonic 3 & Knuckles where doctor Eggman serves as the delete icon on the save screen and since he has the word Delete under him I thought that was his name. A year later I found the manual in the game's files, found out that his name was Robotnik and then Sonic X happened which corrected me once again.
Out of all the Sonic games that I've ever played,I would go with "Sonic Adventure 2 Battle" on the Gamecube as one of my favorite-if not my most favorite-Sonic games, because I remember playing that the most.Whenever I think about it,it brings back good memories.
I'm always confused when people don't already know this that have played Sonic Adventure, it's like, don't you listen to what they are saying? XD Maybe people will know better now :P Also my favourite Sonic game is SA2B, how could it not be, although Sonic Battle is a close second!
+Yukiverse (LucarioIke) Totally with you, I LOVE playing Gemerl. I kinda wish that he or some bot similar would come back as a customizable player character.
Despite the Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog cartoon referring to him as Doctor Robotnik, many references to his Eggman alias were also made -- many contraptions have egg-related names, a cartoonist in the cartoon draws him as Hupmty Dumpty, and Scratch and Grounder refer to him with various egg-themed titles such as "Your Eggnificence".
Another possibility for his first name is that it was chosen because "Ivo" is "Ovi", the Latin root word for "egg", spelled backwards, as a sly reference to his name being "Doctor Eggman" in Japan
I never really grew up with the old sonic so my favorite is Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, which was my sort of first Sonic game I fully played. I did play Sonic 2 at one point and same with Sonic Adventure 1, but it was SA2B on the GameCube that helped me get into the series, so hopfully I don't upset any old Sonic fans.
My favorite Sonic games: None, Sonic never was, is, and never will be any good. Joking lol, my favorite Sonic games are: Sonic 2 for Classic Sonic, Sonic Unleashed(360/PS3 version) for Modern.
If you want to take this further, in the comics there are two eggmans/robotniks. They killed in one comic the old robotnik and himself from another dimension took over and he had the nickname: eggman.
I personally think that this is the better solution of Ivo's real name than the comics, where it was explained that Sonic turned blue because of the "Cobalt Effect" for going too fast, Ivo owned Sonic and that his real name was Ovi Kintobor, but when the "Cobalt Effect" happened, it transformed Ovi into Ivo.
My favourite Sonic game is Adventure 2. People say the Adventure games aged badly, and though I haven't played Adventure 1, I started 2 at the very end of last year. And before you fanboys rage, I have been playing Sonic since I could hold a controller. Heroes is the earliest game I ever remember playing. Even before Adventure 2, I've played Generations, Heroes, Rush + Rush Adventure, The Genesis games, Secret Rings (sorry for reminding you it exists. You may sue me later), Spinball, 3D Blast and Black Knight. Probably the only part I don't really like about A2 is Tails' and Eggman's stages. They're not terrible, but I find Sonic,Shadow, Knuckles and Rouge much more fun and memorable.
+The Blue Mantis I did say that I've played the Genesis games, and I've only really played much of 1 and 3. 1 is pretty good, but I can't beat Labyrinth Zone! And in 3, I got some glitch that left me stuck in the boss room of Hydrocity Zone and I saved after the trigger of this glitch (I have Mega Drive Ultimate Collection) and haven't played it since. Still very influencial games. The ios remake of 1 in particular is the definitive version of the gane
I always thought this was common knowledge. I've only played one Sonic game (Unleashed) and I've never bothered to look into Sonic lore, but Robotnik/Eggman's name is something you can just come across in passing because it's just so well known.
If you follow the comics... Eggman was from an alternate timeline. He killed his sonic in his timeline, so he came to Sonic's world... the "Prime Zome" I think it's called. Ivo Robotnick was the "Eggman" of Sonic's original world, but he was vaporized... Robotized again, then killed AGAIN.
Meh. Sonic teasing Robotnik by calling him Eggman is NOT a clever way of changing the name, that just doesn't make sense. That's like if I had a bully that always called me "poopy head" only then to decide to call myself Mr.Poopyhead. Clearly Robotnik did not like it when Sonic called him eggman. Nope, it's dumb. SEGA should've instead did something more like this: Sonic: Oh look, it's Eggface Eggman: That's Eggman to you! Sonic: What ever you say Eggface. Eggman: Silence! I am Dr. Ivo Eggman Robotnik, the greatest scientific genius in the world! There, problem solved.
Depending on how the insult is put it kinda is. it's like someone calling you Mr Glass because your body is so fragile. then before you know it you start accepting it because that is your situation. the quicker you accept it the better for your mental mind. Though, Robotnik is not be coming anymore sain because of Sonic's constant involvement
+Dash As someone who got a nickname exactly that way, I think it makes just enough sense. Obviously it wouldn't make sense if it was something vulgar like "poopy head"
Kerosyn The point is that Sonic is making reference to Eggman being fat (egg shaped). It was an insult and nothing else. I don't think the problem is that Eggman chose a name because someone gave him a name, that's not the problem. I have a question: Is your Nickname originally intended as an insult coming from your biggest enemy? Don't read too much into it, I'm just curious.
Dash My nickname (which isn't Kerosyn) came from elementary school bullying due to my quiet and effeminate nature. It leaked out of the school and continues to this day, but all these years later, I find it funny rather than insulting. That's just the psychology of association.
Terrible-Bad-Passable-Good-Great and personal categories Not using every game because I can't think of all of them but here we go. This is all my opinion, and preferences apply. This is not me saying "These ARE the best or worst" this is me saying "These are the ones I found to be the least or most enjoyable based on my biases". I won't include Sonic Genesis because it's a remake but the remake was still terrible. TERRIBLE GAMES ~06 ~Shadow the Hedgehog Sonic Boom (all of it) ~Sonic Shuffle ~Sonic and the Secret Rings BAD GAMES ~Sonic Labyrinth ~Sonic 3D Blast PASSABLE GAMES ~Sonic R ~Sonic Adventure 2 ~Sonic Lost Word (almost put this on the good list. Passable doesn't mean bad. It means passable.) ~Sonic Rivals ~Sonic Rivals 2 ~Sonic Spinball GOOD GAMES ~Sonic 1 ~Sonic Heroes ~Sonic and the Black Knight ~Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine ~Sonic Rush ~Sonic Rush: Adventure ~Sonic Advance Series GREAT GAMES ~Sonic 2 ~Sonic 3 & Knuckles ~Sonic Adventure ~Sonic Unleashed ~Sonic Colors ~Sonic Generations THE GAME I CONSIDER THE BEST Sonic Unleashed THE GAME(s) I CONSIDER THE WORST Sonic 06 in terms of what it did EMOTIONALLY to people and Shadow the Hedgehog in terms of basic quality MY PERSONAL FAVORITE Sonic Heroes (Yes, it's not the best ever. This is what is called not being bias about your favorite game.) MY PERSONAL MOST-HATED Everything Sonic Boom because I SAW it coming, I SAID what would happen, and it happened anyway. The entire sub-franchise is terribly-done, and demotes all the characters and potential of the series. I hate Lost World for getting rid of the Boost Mechanic when things had FINALLY gotten better again, and I hate that 06 ruined everything, but Lost World was still a polished FUNCTIONING game, 06 still had good ideas (even though they were butchered incredibly), but Boom is just unoriginal and cheap. THE GAME(s) I FEEL IS/are THE MOST OVERRATED Sonic Colors and Generations mainly because while the gameplay was great, the stories were terrible, and it started the new down-slide for Sonic. THE GAME(s) I FEEL IS/are THE MOST OVERHATED Sonic R because it still functions and is still enjoyable as a product, and Sonic and the Black Knight because it improved just about everything from Secret Rings from story to graphics to gameplay and yet is treated even worse because of Secret Rings. THE GAME(s) I FEEL IS/are OVERSHADOWED THE MOST Sonic Unleashed because the werehog was DIFFERENT not BAD, but because it was different people decided it was bad, and Sonic and the Black Knight again because it had so many great moments that were ignored most of the time. Feel free to leave your own thoughts but please be respectful of my opinion.
As bizarrely far as this kept going, and a few technically errors about "I Am the Walrus" (it's always been called that. "I am the eggman is just a line), I was not disappointed by the "Working Class Hero" bit.
Good Things About Sonic 06 -Silver The Hedgehog -A Plot That Wasn't That Bad But Could Of Been Better -Elise Kisses Sonic.... Its So Heartwarming -Funny Ways To Glitch Abuse The Game -Some Of The Levels Looked Kinda Awesome -Sonic's Green Eyes Look More Awesome -Amy Stands Up To Silver -The Music Is Awesome In 'His World' And Our World
In the comics, he was friends with Sonic and even invented Sonic's shoes, till an accident caused him to go from Doctor Ovi Kintobor to Dr. Ivo Robotnik. His original name spelled backwards.
My opinion as a person who barely cares about the franchise is that Sonic's writing depends on the game. In the better games with the best writing, he's someone I root for, legitmately, as I find his Chaotic Good, snarky, friendly style charming. In the less well-written games, he comes off as brash and arrogant. Everyone else either fluctuates (Tails, Knuckles, etc.) or stays bland (Amy for a long while, etc.) No matter the game or cartoon, however, Dr. Robotnik is the best character by a landslide. How can't you love that mustache?
Well three of my favorite sonic games were Sonic Advanced, Sonic Adventure and Sonic Colors. Sonic Unleashed would've made it if it wasn't for Eggmanland....
In Sonic Boom, Team Sonic started to call him Egg Head. Egg Head is word for small person but it also insults him due to shape of his body. Clever, Sega.
Another link I can link to people when they complain when I say 'Robotnik.' Thanks for this! It's not just hard-headed 90's nostalgia, Robotnik IS his name and Eggman is a nickname/insult that he chose to just GO with. Appreciated.
Here's a theory for you: Robotnik's unusual shape and gait could be due to him maybe having Cushing's syndrome. It really looks like it in the older Robotnik designs rather than the over-emphasised very lanky Eggman.
I don't know how canon this is, but I read on Wikipedia that in the Sonic manga Robotnik "died" and his consciousness was uploaded into one of his last remaining clones, that happened to be slightly deformed in the sense that it had a more ovular body and improperly proportioned limbs, being too thin.
i like to think that there are 2 versions of the character .. Eggman is the funny eccentric scientist ... that puts little animals into ladybug robots and looks like he came out form a Beatles soundtrack cover Robotnick is the one form the Satam Catroon ... the one that actually sounds intimidating and pure evil and who already took over the world
Heh. You forgot the part in Sonic Generations when Dr. Robotnik(90's) and Dr. Eggman(2000's) team up. As Sonic and Tails are about to fight the two with the Time Eater: Classic Tails: "Look! It's Dr. Robotnik!" Dr. Robotnik: "Nobody calls me that anymore." This was making reference to the name change and with Classic Tails (from Sonic 2) saying this, a nice throwback to Sonic fans who have been there since 1991.
His actual name is Ivo Kintobor (you can confirm this by the fact that professor Gerald's last name is Kintobor). He changed it to Robotnik when he went evil.
You have a funny way of pronouncing Mario. On a more serious note you should have mentioned Gerald and Maria being named Robotnik even in the Japanese version..
Fun fact: The Sonic the Hedgehog comics have a different story about Eggman. The comics aren't canon though, so one shouldn't take it as truth. It was stated that Robotnik and Eggman are actually two entirely different people. Robotnik was banished to another dimension, then assumed dead, in issue #50, only to be replaced by Eggman. Robotnik even returned in issue #91, and ended up trying to get aid from Sonic's group to try to take back his base and minions from the 'imposter.' I dunno what the writers were thinking, but they certainly made things weird for fans
It's like what happened to Princess Peach/ Toadstool. I made the connection toe the Beetle's song as well and his mustache makes him look a bit like a walrus too.
Favorite Sonic game? Adventure 2 Battle... a guilty pleasure, its those chaos I say, and that first stage. And a game where I got to play as Robotnik himself, nothing like being the bad guy for once.
Ok, so in Japan: Dr. Eggman with Dr. Ivo Robotnik as his unused real name. In the West: Dr. Ivo Robotnik with Sonic and friends calling him Eggman as an insult which Ivo later took as his own nickname.
I always understood it as Eggman was Sonic's nickname for him (since the first time I heard it, it was Sonic messing with him like the clip that you played while I was typing this)
Ever since I was 9 years old and played the very first Sonic game when it first came out, I actually would go on about how egg-shaped he was. I used say, "He's a walking egg with legs" sometimes. lol So, his being called Eggman (in the west later) wasn't surprising to me because he always looked like an egg.
Ivo is also "ovi" backwards, which is Latin for the word "egg" (ovaries being a notable derivative of the word). Not sure if that has to do with it, but it's still interesting.
My personal favorite is Sonic Adventure 2. Specifically Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the Gamecube. Back in the day I used to play 2 player mode all the time with my big brother, and he let me have the Neutral Chao Garden on his file. A close second is Sonic Generations, but to be honest, nostalgia gave SA2 Battle the edge for me. That game is childhood for me. But also generally, I've never played a Sonic game I didn't like... except for Sonic '06. I haven't actually played Sonic Boom, so jury's out on that one, and I only played Lost World in demo form, but I did enjoy that demo.
Did you know that in an older Sonic comic, Eggman was actually a good guy and was called Dr.Kintobor. He later turned evil and changed his name due to an accident in an experiment. Im not joking, look it up.
i always thought that sonic was against robotnik in the original game, then when i played adventure 2 i figured eggman was his grandson since eggman talks about his grandfather on the ark
Awesome! For me (South America) it's always been Eggman but because Internet. It was weird to me when a few years ago I see people reffering to him as Robotnik.
I've actually always known this, I pieced it together in Sonic Adventure when everyone started insulting him by calling him "Eggman" though it's rather strange that in Sonic Boom Sonic calls him "Egghead" and Robotnik retorts with "It's Egg-MAN, Eggman, I swear it's like you get it wrong on purpose!" Anyway, I love tons of Sonic games equally, Sonic Colors for the BEAUTIFUL script, (How was Bucket o' Sushi?) (Eggman's evil knows no bounds...) Sonic Battle for everyone's favorite Gyroid Emerl (who SERIOUSLY needs to return, even if only as a character to put "yourself" into the sonic world by playing as) and Sonic Adventure 2/Battle for my favorite time sink in all of gaming, the chao garden. ...I've never played Knuckles Chaotix though, always wanted to.
actually, his *true* name is Kintobor, and he only became evil and changed his name to Robotnik when he was fused with the chaos emeralds and a hard boiled egg (not a joke), because the chaos emeralds are actually a crystallin form of gross things. Thank you, BDG.
1st: IVO is supposed to be like evil, and 2nd: IVO is probably his first name name, I mean we got Maria ROBOTNIK and Gerald ROBOTNIK, see that ROBOTNIK are the LAST NAME and not the first, so IVO is probably eggman first name! That or his his name could also be Eggman Robotnik, who knows?
Hah! You used artwork from my old Dr. Robotnik comic strip for this video. Specifically, the panel of Robotnik surrounded by every one of his alternate incarnations. Very cool! And, yeah, I always just accepted the fact that "Eggman" was an insult that he got tired of hearing, so he adopted it as his supervillain name, so to speak, in order to lessen the impact of the insult. Whether or not it's worked for him... well... that's another story.
+Adam Napolitano If memory serves, their first names are the same (atleast, Maria's is)
+KHZack13 gerald eggmand and maria eggman
Wayne Ekeh
That... is very lame... like no joke that's just lame.
***** im merely stating something
Wayne Ekeh
No no, I know that and I thank you for the info, but I'm just saying that on Sonic Team's part, making their last name Eggman is really lame.
So Eggman is just a nickname? I'm so glad that is the case because he's always been Doctor Robotnick to me.
This video completely clears up one of the sonic fandom's biggest controversies. Good job.
Except it gets a lot of details wrong, like Sonic being a Japanese game 'localized' for America. It wasn't. It was always a joint creation of Sega of America and Sega of Japan. so Eggman is John Lennon from the Beatles in Teddy Roosevelt's body? seems legit.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles for Classic Sonic, Sonic Generations for Modern. How about you?
Could u please do a meaning for all the characters persona's in the game persona I didn't understand the similar aspects of fuuka and her persona
Like how akihikos persona and Shinjiros are brothers I'm sorry I spelled the name wrong I know I'm dumb
+Gnoggin Sonic Advance 3 for Classic, Sonic Colors for modern.
+Gnoggin I never played the classic Sonic games while growing up, but Sonic Adventure & Sonic Generations for Modern for me.

Wait.... this wasnt common knowledge?
+duo1666 Apparently not, my friend.
+LegoGuy87 Settle down Legoguy, Yes we needed to remind people why they changed it and why it worked, big deal.
+duo1666 I guess tons of people just didn't see that part in the game, or hear anything from anyone.
Jess Ferrian Its been in pretty much every Robotnik bio released though.
duo1666 I think not knowing who robotnic is is mostly a problem with non-sonic fans though, so they wouldn't read that stuff. That, and a lot of people just don't read in general, so those people wouldn't see it either.
I still call him robotnik, it just fits more, eggman is just a goofy name that works, but isnt fitting for his 'current' design
I call him "Eggman" for the same reason Sonic does, it's somewhat insulting. It sounds like "egg head," a derogatory term used to refer to smart people, and it references his egg shaped body.
@wolkaiser drake Uhhh I dunno man Eggman's current design is still pretty goofy.
At the risk of die-hard sonic fans raging over me mentioning the anime:
during the episodes where Shadow comes into the series, Eggman says his great uncle was Robotnik.
For me, he will always be Doctor Ivo Robotnik.
In the Sonic cartoon we have in Greece, he's always been knows as Robotnik. I didn't know he was "eggman"...
0:00 eggman's name: Doctor Ivo Robotnik. CASE CLOSEX

Tough call, but I guess it would be Sonic Advance for me. Gotta love the Tiny Chao Garden.
+Sin Kamar 'Eyyy, another GBA player!
The Advance games are great but they're so underrated
+Mayowa Are The very first video game I ever played was on my mom's GBA SP so I've always been a fan!
+Sin Kamar Agree! That was my first Sonic game and is my favourite too. Such good memories

My first sonic game was sonic rush, but it was really rage-inducing. I came back with sonic colors and that game is now my favorite game.
was it the last special stage?
ds?
***** i only got to play a little bit of Colors DS but it certainly is a fun experience.
I played the wii version of sonic colors.
Julian Valentin that was fun as well. It's not as super spectacular as people made it out to be at first but still a solid, fun, good game.
In Sonic X there was another Robotnik who was Eggman's grandfather. So his full name (including catoons) is Dr. Julian Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik?
Dr. Eggman/Robotnik has always been my favorite video game character. Any incarnation of him was played to perfection... at least IMO.
I was legitimately a little freaked out by that intro. XD
YOU WILL HAVE THE KAZOO SONG AND LIKE IT!!
seriously though I'm with you on that
+Gavin Warner I actually thought it was funny. I want the mod or hack of that now.
Classic Customs It was funny, but it was really weird.
So we should all formally refer to him as Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.
My first sonic game was Sonic Heroes on the Gamecube. It was also my first non-portable game ever. I loved it all the way up until I got another game, and then sonic games went farther and farther down the list...

That's understandable.
When I heard him being called Eggman in Adventure, I assumed it was a reboot/prequel because of the insulting joke. Also, the English Sonic Advance game manual says that Eggman, himself, prefers to be called Robotnik.
My favorite sonice game, though, is Adventure 2
just read the encyclopedia
julian kintober
to robotnik
to eggman
Lets not forget Robotnik looked great in Pajamas, but had the suit forced on him.
Well didn't I have this backwards. I thought eggman's name was Eggman Robotnik while his granfathers name Ivo Robotnik.
Nope, you're thinking of Gerald Robotnik, who is Ivo "Eggmman" Robotnik's grandfather.
Every time he said Eggman, I thought of the Beatles song, and then he just had to mention it, and now it's stuck in my head.
My favorite game is Sonic: Before the sequel...
When I was young I had the Sonic & Knuckles collection pre-installed on my PC which contained Sonic 3 & Knuckles where doctor Eggman serves as the delete icon on the save screen and since he has the word Delete under him I thought that was his name.

Keep using that egg on your shoulders.
XD Maybe people will know better now :P
Also my favourite Sonic game is SA2B, how could it not be, although Sonic Battle is a close second!
+Yukiverse (LucarioIke) i know right! eggman is clearly a insult about his......body shape, ya lets go with body shape.
+Yukiverse (LucarioIke) heck, it even says as much in the instruction booklet. i havent read that in years and i still remember that.
+Yukiverse (LucarioIke) Totally with you, I LOVE playing Gemerl. I kinda wish that he or some bot similar would come back as a customizable player character.
+lightningbro I know who Emerl is, but who's Gemerl? Is he in Sonic Advance 3? (I've only played Sonic Advance 1 & Battle when it came to GBA).
***** yep, Gemerl is from Sonic Advance 3.
He has always been Dr. Eggman to me. (I'm from 95.. so yeah..)
Another possibility for his first name is that it was chosen because "Ivo" is "Ovi", the Latin root word for "egg", spelled backwards, as a sly reference to his name being "Doctor Eggman" in Japan
Yeah, I'll just stick with McNosehair, if that's okay with everybody.
My favorite Sonic games:
None, Sonic never was, is, and never will be any good.
Joking lol, my favorite Sonic games are:
Sonic 2 for Classic Sonic, Sonic Unleashed(360/PS3 version) for Modern.
+George Miles I prefer Unleashed over Sonic 2, btw.
Wow, I think that's the closest to the "Modern" border you can get! The first good game since 06!
If you want to take this further, in the comics there are two eggmans/robotniks. They killed in one comic the old robotnik and himself from another dimension took over and he had the nickname: eggman.
sonic unleashed is my favorite 3d sonic game and sonic CD is my favorite 2d sonic game
Oh, and let's not forget All Stars Racing and Sonic Riders: ZERO FREAKING GRAVITY!!!
+ToxicPenguin All stars racing transformed is easily the best kart racer ever made.
+ToxicPenguin Zero Gravity took the default speed and made the game slower. :(
You need to play the originals.
I like Colors
+Mudkip971 I'd say, It's the best in the modern sonic games!
I am more into different shades of gray
+Reuel Mcfee SONIC F***ING GENERATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Generations is on the same level i'd say. But Colours has its own world themes and mechanics, that's why I'd say its better.
But they're both great!
***** Not only that but you now kinda jump infinitely in water
SEGA should've instead did something more like this:
Sonic: Oh look, it's Eggface
Eggman: That's Eggman to you!
Dash
My nickname (which isn't Kerosyn) came from elementary school bullying due to my quiet and effeminate nature. It leaked out of the school and continues to this day, but all these years later, I find it funny rather than insulting. That's just the psychology of association.
Kerosyn What was it?
Sonic Advance 1, then Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Which was my first console video game EVER and remains as one of my favourite Video Games of all time.
Terrible-Bad-Passable-Good-Great and personal categories
Not using every game because I can't think of all of them but here we go. This is all my opinion, and preferences apply. This is not me saying "These ARE the best or worst" this is me saying "These are the ones I found to be the least or most enjoyable based on my biases". I won't include Sonic Genesis because it's a remake but the remake was still terrible.
TERRIBLE GAMES
~06

THE GAME I CONSIDER THE BEST
Sonic Unleashed
THE GAME(s) I CONSIDER THE WORST
Sonic 06 in terms of what it did EMOTIONALLY to people and Shadow the Hedgehog in terms of basic quality
MY PERSONAL FAVORITE
Sonic Heroes (Yes, it's not the best ever. This is what is called not being bias about your favorite game.)
MY PERSONAL MOST-HATED
Everything Sonic Boom because I SAW it coming, I SAID what would happen, and it happened anyway.
THE GAME(s) I FEEL IS/are THE MOST OVERRATED
Sonic Colors and Generations mainly because while the gameplay was great, the stories were terrible, and it started the new down-slide for Sonic.
THE GAME(s) I FEEL IS/are THE MOST OVERHATED
Sonic R because it still functions and is still enjoyable as a product, and Sonic and the Black Knight because it improved just about everything from Secret Rings from story to graphics to gameplay and yet is treated even worse because of Secret Rings.
THE GAME(s) I FEEL IS/are OVERSHADOWED THE MOST
Sonic Unleashed because the werehog was DIFFERENT not BAD, but because it was different people decided it was bad, and Sonic and the Black Knight again because it had so many great moments that were ignored most of the time.
Feel free to leave your own thoughts but please be respectful of my opinion.
Sonic 2
Great
WTF?
SteveDoidoUltimate I take it you either think I'm not giving enough credit, or you think Sonic 2 isn't that good?
TakTheFox Sonic 2 is OK, but the cheap enemies placement keep it from being great.
SteveDoidoUltimate Are you talking about those drill-like robots and Slicers?
TakTheFox Both and more.
As bizarrely far as this kept going, and a few technically errors about "I Am the Walrus" (it's always been called that. "I am the eggman is just a line), I was not disappointed by the "Working Class Hero" bit.
You got a subscriber just by defending the glorious Ivo Robotnik name as canon.
The fact that he might be Russian suits him pretty well, indeed.
Oddly, enough I knew most of that about Robotink.
SA2 all day, everyday.
I remember that. Sonic called him Eggman in SA and Eggman flatout rejected it but then eventuallty Robotnik eventually started calling himself it.
My favourite sonic game is ether Sonic 06 or Sonic Boom Rise of lyric :)
+Digimine Nathan someone is fishing
+Digimine Nathan No, It's Heros
+Wolf_king_dan || ウルフが支配的になります。 Oh come now, Heroes isn't that bad, the story is awesome and shows just how dangerous Metal Sonic is.
Good Things About Sonic 06
-Silver The Hedgehog
-A Plot That Wasn't That Bad But Could Of Been Better
-Elise Kisses Sonic.... Its So Heartwarming
-Funny Ways To Glitch Abuse The Game
-Some Of The Levels Looked Kinda Awesome
-Sonic's Green Eyes Look More Awesome
-Amy Stands Up To Silver
-The Music Is Awesome In 'His World' And Our World
Kyle Fielding And dreams of an absolution is BA too! ... I kinda wish they'd remake that game after TONS of bugfixing, then I'd probably like it.
In the comics, he was friends with Sonic and even invented Sonic's shoes, till an accident caused him to go from Doctor Ovi Kintobor to Dr. Ivo Robotnik. His original name spelled backwards.
Dr. Robotnik was always a better character than Sonic. So is Tails. And Rouge. And Knuckles.
...
Sonic's just an awfully written character, okay?
My opinion as a person who barely cares about the franchise is that Sonic's writing depends on the game.
In the better games with the best writing, he's someone I root for, legitmately, as I find his Chaotic Good, snarky, friendly style charming. In the less well-written games, he comes off as brash and arrogant.
Everyone else either fluctuates (Tails, Knuckles, etc.) or stays bland (Amy for a long while, etc.)
No matter the game or cartoon, however, Dr. Robotnik is the best character by a landslide.
How can't you love that mustache?
Today you are correct. But he wasn't always that way.
Well three of my favorite sonic games were Sonic Advanced, Sonic Adventure and Sonic Colors. Sonic Unleashed would've made it if it wasn't for Eggmanland....
I'm early
let's not make a joke
*_PINGAS_*
In Sonic Boom, Team Sonic started to call him Egg Head. Egg Head is word for small person but it also insults him due to shape of his body. Clever, Sega.
Another link I can link to people when they complain when I say 'Robotnik.' Thanks for this! It's not just hard-headed 90's nostalgia, Robotnik IS his name and Eggman is a nickname/insult that he chose to just GO with. Appreciated.
Surprised how few comments I'm seeing about Tsuko's kazoo rendition of City Escape in the intro. Pleasantly surprised when I heard that.
Eggman is the funny eccentric scientist ... that puts little animals into ladybug robots and looks like he came out form a Beatles soundtrack cover
Robotnick is the one form the Satam Catroon ... the one that actually sounds intimidating and pure evil and who already took over the world
Heh. You forgot the part in Sonic Generations when Dr. Robotnik(90's) and Dr. Eggman(2000's) team up.
As Sonic and Tails are about to fight the two with the Time Eater:
Classic Tails: "Look! It's Dr. Robotnik!"
Dr. Robotnik: "Nobody calls me that anymore."
This was making reference to the name change and with Classic Tails (from Sonic 2) saying this, a nice throwback to Sonic fans who have been there since 1991.
His actual name is Ivo Kintobor (you can confirm this by the fact that professor Gerald's last name is Kintobor). He changed it to Robotnik when he went evil.
His name will always be Dr Robotnik. Eggman just sounds like an insult that even he has adopted
John Lennon couldn't have filed a lawsuit over the name "Eggman" as he was long dead by the time Sonic was made.
Damn son. You just proved that "Eggman" is illuminati with that name translation / beatles bit.
People complain because it’s Sonic. No one complains about King Koopa’s name being changed to Bowser or Princess Toadstools name changed to Peach
Ok, so in Japan: Dr. Eggman with Dr. Ivo Robotnik as his unused real name.
In the West: Dr. Ivo Robotnik with Sonic and friends calling him Eggman as an insult which Ivo later took as his own nickname.
4:38 His name was Julian till he took over Mobotropolis and changed his name to Dr. Robotnik. Watch "Blast to the Past Pt 1 & 2."
My favorite sonic game is the one where it has great control, awesome graphics, and an outstanding plot... I am still waiting for it to come out.
Ivo is also "ovi" backwards, which is Latin for the word "egg" (ovaries being a notable derivative of the word). Not sure if that has to do with it, but it's still interesting.
Sonic 2 will always be my favorite. It was the first Sonic game I owned and played.
In that cutscene, Sonic's face flaps around unnaturally as he talks. AM I THE ONLY ONE FREAKED THE F*CK OUT BY THIS?!!
i always thought that sonic was against robotnik in the original game, then when i played adventure 2 i figured eggman was his grandson since eggman talks about his grandfather on the ark
Awesome! For me (South America) it's always been Eggman but because Internet. It was weird to me when a few years ago I see people reffering to him as Robotnik.
I've actually always known this, I pieced it together in Sonic Adventure when everyone started insulting him by calling him "Eggman" though it's rather strange that in Sonic Boom Sonic calls him "Egghead" and Robotnik retorts with "It's Egg-MAN, Eggman, I swear it's like you get it wrong on purpose!"
Anyway, I love tons of Sonic games equally, Sonic Colors for the BEAUTIFUL script, (How was Bucket o' Sushi?) (Eggman's evil knows no bounds...) Sonic Battle for everyone's favorite Gyroid Emerl (who SERIOUSLY needs to return, even if only as a character to put "yourself" into the sonic world by playing as) and Sonic Adventure 2/Battle for my favorite time sink in all of gaming, the chao garden.
...I've never played Knuckles Chaotix though, always wanted to.
actually, his *true* name is Kintobor, and he only became evil and changed his name to Robotnik when he was fused with the chaos emeralds and a hard boiled egg (not a joke), because the chaos emeralds are actually a crystallin form of gross things. Thank you, BDG.
Well, if you want to go even further, he was originally Ovi Kintobor in his backstory before becoming Ivo Robotnik.
so the fact that eggman/robotnik is sitting most of the time in his machines and robots is a reference to Roosevelt's diasease?
Dr Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, also known as Pingas
My fav sonics are S3&K and SA1
Fun fact: The Robotnik from the sonic cartoons is actually a different character from the modern day Robotnik in the Archy comic series.
I really liked te name eggman, sounded easy to remember and funny Back in the early 2000's. Also my favorite sonic game is air riders
Or mix the names together.
I sometimes call him Robeggman
Also favorite Sonic game is Heroes or Colors
JULIAN!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! HIS NAME WAS JULIAN!!!!!!!!????????!?!?!??!
