It starts as cheesiest action ever and turns into a slasher. What kind of thing makes action heroes bulging with muscles and dick jokes helpless victims?
They (yautja) literally never survive their own movie. The action hero survives every time, it's not a subversion of expectations, it plays into it. I still love this movie, its really fun. I just wish that they would make the predator the main character for once.

Yeah pretty stupid to assume that entire species has the same values. In my head Canon regular mature predators blush at dinner and are a little embarrassed about what their adolescent child is doing with the family space craft on the weekends.
Actually its just autism. "The Predator LoL everything is funny and nothing matters." Showed us that predators just wanna be autistic and super big CGI abomination which doesn't hold up better than the suit in the first movie.
In additon, I have to notify that the Yautja show great differentiation in sub-species and between clans For example; the common city myth was about the Yautja being Matriarchal and Females being more stronger and dominant than males - the *reality* however; has shown that both males and females are roughly equalavilent in terms of strenght, as shown by the Example of Big Mama - the first cannon predator huntress
This is actually present in the films. In AVP the mandibles of the predators are noticably smaller, which means that the clan's physical differentiation might just be that.
Well it depends some clans might have females that are larger and stronger than the males and in other clans, the opposite may be true. But yes usually they are the same.
The "canon" at this point is completely fucked up, as pointed out by other people. There is no official canon, only what makes sense. Even their original weight was changed, which is why I only refer to my original knowledge of the lore. You'll notice though that several of the 90s AVP comics were full of ridiculous fanfic-tier stupid shit that was not compatible with the concept of the species, like constant cooperation and even submissive attitude to humans, specifically only female humans being respected like some feminist power fantasy. It was really cringy. Its stuff like that which make a very clear message that only fan works that make sense and *fit* with the concept of the species, the story and atmosphere/setting should be accepted.
i think there matriarchal for the traditonal no female no children mean dead clan line of thought as in females or females who have children have a natural higher status of respect though the hunting tradition still takes prime spot in importance
A long time ago I read somewhere that Yautja actually have the four pronged mandibles because they originated from the same planet as Xenomorphs, and these served as a defense mechanism to the Xenos' retractable inner mouth. Don't know if it's canon but it sure sounds cool.
@@WiseSageBum I only saw the movies, but I always thought that the Yautja found the xenomorphs and then started moving the eggs to other places rather than outright creating them.
@@nekoprankster2184 I guess it depends where you're reading lore I remember there being a voice over in AVP saying that xenos were created by the Yautja, but other lore places wrote it as the Yautja cultivating the xenos from an existing species so it makes sense with what the Alien franchise has done
@@WiseSageBum its both right if i remember correctly xenos were found by yautja not created but the breeds we are familiar with are the results of them introducing them into specific ecosystems. Also Avp is cannon to predator universe but not to the aliens universe
I mean, i can understand that some people have issues pronouncing names like Yautja or Xenomorph. That being said, I still wince internally when someone says them wrong. Or things like Sangheli, Uungoi, or Lek-Golo.
In some of the books, it's actually described that their dreadlocks are hair, which is then twisted into their shape. The hair is twisted so tightly that the fibers stick together on their own, and the scalp around the base of each lock is removed via a ceremonial knife, essentially scalped into permanence. If the individual so much as whimpers during this process, the locks are undone and they have to do this process all over again. However, this was older material and may have been retconned. Though I prefer this idea, as it suggests that A. they are in fact proto-mammals, similar to synapsids, and B. they perform ritual scarification as a right of passage, like many primitive societies.
The problem with that, is at least all movie versions, show the dreads as “tentacles”. Like, they even have gaps in the skull (in Pred 2), that seem like they are attached to the brain.
Not hair, similar to hair but flexible enough to be plaited together. Like you see on other parts of their body like eyebrows, etc. But as they grow the plaits would grow together to form one thick cord from being bound so tightly. And they are sensory organs with blood supply. I think they're more like a horn than hair minus the hardened layer of keratin so the blood supply is exposed to the air allowing them to cool off or warm up as needed since they're probably also "cold blooded" and since they're essentially braiding together fibers of flesh not only would it hurt but eventually it would grow together into one thick tentacle like cord
@@aliahpersonous2893 When I say they scalp, I mean, they SCALP. As in, they remove all of the hair follicles and skin, then bind the remaining hairs so tightly that they actually malform the bone over time. This process likely takes place decades before their first hunt, while their bones are still growing.
The yautja existed before the formation of earth as they were battling xenos in deep space at that time. They're not from earth. Read some of the dark horse comics or any of the novels and you'll see.
There are several comics that do have different canons. In one, it’s theorized in universe that they might’ve evolved from relocated Earth therapsids. In another, it’s that the Engineers created them.
There's multiple sources about the Yautja and their origin, it's never been made super clear which source is truly cannon. According to Ridley Scott the dark horse comics aren't cannon and neither is AVP. My point is that there's plenty of room for speculation and fan theories..
@@zkvickers2466 imagine being such a jackass you criticize a joke. Also, if you REALLY want to be literal, gatling guns don't "brrrr" either. You're thinking of miniguns, and yes they are completely different guns. The only main similarities is having more than one barrel.
@@zkvickers2466 Gatling gun is not part of it's name nor is it an actual gatling gun. But yes, that is another example and that is also the gun that is responsible for the name of the minigun. The common assumption Yautja are scientifically illiterate makes no sense. We see them out manver trained soldiers, use there advanced technology with practiced ease and reaper it. Why wouldn't a species with this level of skill, tactical thinking and tec not be adept in the sciences?
I'm not well versed in all the lore around them, but considering their culture and tribe-like way of doing things ... You could expect some of them being litterate in science, while the others are warriors using the tools the nerds made for theim to keep on with their hunt traditions ...
@@crysosisback7115 similar to humans really, do you know the fine workings of your smart phone but are still able to make great use of it regardless, the people who build it in the factory probably doesn't know either and are just following instructions
Well the fact of how they are treating their technology and of how their society is structured leads more to the conclusion that they did not invent their tech. They are very protective of their gear and most of it is millenias old and given from one generation to the next with great honors and only for the worthy members of the clans. that is an indication of the scarcity of the tech or on how complex the production is. Their technology also seems a little too clean and stylish for such a barbaric race, further supporting the argument that it isnt their invention. For the sake of the consistency we ignore Predator 4 here because that movie was utter shit written by 2 three year old infants with down syndrome. The counter argument against them beeing scientifically illiterate is basically meaningless. A medieval cratsman also did teach his aprentice everything by show and tell and not by written word and yet the aprentice some day reached the rank of master and knew all there is to know about his craft. Doesnt mean he knows anything about the science behind his work. he just does what he knows what works. We never see the Yautja do anything else that isnt in some form hunt/travel/coms related. So we cant know if their tech is not just doing the necessary stuff for them. They just push some buttons with minimalistic runes on them. The small predator in Pred3 clicks three buttons and his ship is instantly put on autopilot for earth. Doesnt seem like he did much science there. more like an app menu he just has to click on where he wants to go. Very VERY well thought out interface there. My ideas are: - The Yautja are intelligent enough to make that stuff themselfes, they just dont like to make new of it. (true eco friendly) - They trade with another race for that tech (boooring) - They steal it. (hate that one because dishonor on them) - The Yautja employ slave races making the stuff for them. (a good possibility ) - The original owners of the tech are long dead, maybe killed by the Yautja themselves. (my personal favorite) I like to think that they arent perfect in that regard. because it makes them feel more real and less made up to be super space aryans we cant match up to.
@@eisenbesenlp6446 LOL Yes let us never speak of Predator 4. I can't disagree with what you say so I won't. Them inheriting there tec is a new one for me (like the Guard from StarGate). I always saw their hunting with archaic tec as a test of manhood and skill part of a logger social pressure (attracting a mate or self imposed eugenics like the Nietzschean in Andromeda). In the same way there are people who hunt with bows doesn't mean the bow in height of your technology.
@@eisenbesenlp6446 I think yautja were slave race, they killed the masters and took their tech, I don't remember in what comic but I liked it Also yautja wearing mask is in honor of first yautja that killed a master as he weared master skull as a mask (Sorry for the shitty english)
The Bio-mask of the Predator also allows its eyes to change to our vision as well as their default and thermo-vision. AvP cannon also gives the mask a vision like their default but modified to highlight a Xenomorph either a green colour or blueish (depending on the version of Bio-mask). AvP cannon also gives them a kind of photo-negative like vision used to track other brethren, commonly given to new hunters called youngbloods.
When the plot revolves around a Predator hunting an autistic kid so he can weaponize it, you know it's failed. "The Predator (2018)" will never be canon. Change my mind. (Fantastic video btw.)
The ideas in The Predator are not essentially bad, it is the execution that is bad. We have Yautja who is supposedly here to help humans slaughtering humans left and right. He is anti-splicing genes yet he possesses human genes. Also autism being the next step of evolution and Yautja wanting to adapt to a planet via our genes although it is said that humans will go extinct on this planet. It is kinda sad because I can see parts that could've been changed and the movie could've been salvaged but alas, we got this shit...
Additionally; there was also another race of reptilian-esque beings called; Hish-qu-Ten they; imitate the Yautja behaviore; but they were extremely diffetentiated from them, especially by their biology.
I'm pretty sure the Hish-Que-Ten was a writer trying to rewrite established Predator lore and renamed the species. As far as I'm aware most people really dislike this and just go by the established name Yautja. But if you can source me to where it shows that they were similar species I'd actually appreciate that. I love reading Predator lore.
@@ItsNorthernStar Not the most reliable source but the Hish are getting an action figure and a character in hunting grounds. Apparently they're the predator's ancestor now.
I love how people have broken down why an aliens/Predators blood is green based on the elements in the atmosphere with the most scientific precision. But in the 80s a director just said "yeah and it's gonna have green blood cos it's an alien"
I would like to watch a Predator movie that stars a Female Predator, but at the same time, I don’t think I should because Hollywood at times screws things up.
That time has passed. If not then wait a while. With them being so tribal maybe the females do the invading of planets and things? They’d have to be just as clever in everything in order to be able to deal with the males and their moments of asshatery. 😂😂
I have a feeling if we were to get a movie featuring a female Yautja she would end up being way too humanized/sexualized. In the new game, Predator Hunting Grounds, the females are tiny and skinny compared to the males, even though it is canon that the females are bigger and stronger than the males. I'm 99% sure that design choice, which so blatantly disregarded the canon, was just to be more appealing to their audience (men) which was VERY disappointing. Anyway, knowing that, I feel like Hollywood would probably do something similar.
That part when the Yautja starts laughing madly at him especially is chilling because they are mimics more than actual speaking creatures. Which begs the question of where/from who did it pick up that sound from? A classic movie, one of the best of the 80's! I saw it in summer of '87 (the year I graduated high school!) for dirt cheap at a matinee--it rocked then and it rocks now!
The Yautja has to be one of the most original and iconic creatures to ever grace the big screen! Predators are badass galactic assassins that have interesting and believable backstories that are grounded in science which adds to their cool factor. I want you guys to name three monsters/aliens from either film, games or comics with one being your favourite and three being your third favourite. 1. Yautja (Predator) 2. Xenomorph (Alien) 3. Sangheili (Halo)
1: Protoss from StarCraft series 2: Space Marine Primarchs from 40k, not the regular Marines, the Primarchs specifically 3: the leaders of the aliens from xcom enemy Union If you can't tell I rather like the concept of psychic creatures
1. Yautja (a radical meritocracy). Your reputation is based on your last achievement/challenge. 2. Xenomorph. The word is just Greek for Strange shape. The real name of the creature is unknown, but I am pretty sure is a biomechanical weapon. 3. The thing. A shapeshifting parasite. Only motivation is absorb anything. 4. The Gravemind (a hivemind). Unlike the Thing, this one is a centralized intelligence, with complex motivations and higher intellect.
What if due to the harsh environment of the yautja, their early ancestors carried subdued prey with there mandibles before evolving to be bipedal. This could also lead to an early rise of pack mentality and help start civilization faster than humanity.
I am loving your content! The Predator franchise is one of my all-time favorites, and I have never found them delved into so deeply. I thought that I knew virtually everything about them--read all the books, most of the comics, etc. but I had never heard the theory that they are from a primordial Earth! If you haven't done one already...could you do one about the Xenomorphs from the Alien franchise?
Wow! You got a lot from analyzing the first movie alone! A lot of points you make actually remind me of a bunch of expanded universe content with the predators! Theres even one where a human who had a close encounter with a predator speculates that they may actually be from earth. For the mandables, those might be a means of vocalizing, threat display, trapping prey within the mouth, expressing mood, etc. i think i remember hearing somewhere they might actually use their mandibles to press buttons on the interior of the mask which does sound a little silly but fun.
10:49-11:44 To add on to Yautja vision, I always believed they had a form of echo location along with thermal vision. In an environment where everything is hotter than you, as a prey animal it would be really useful to have the ability to actively raise your own body temperature as a form of camouflage to hide from a predator. To counter this, a predator would need another form of sight to make out their prey. It would explain why the Predator does the clicking noise every so often and that's probably what the mandibles are for.
The Silurian theory is fascinating. It's so cool how you added that to this video. It always struck me as odd how a species with the ideology of the predators could reach space travel. Maybe the ones we see in the movies are the tribal post-apocalyptic descendants of an advanced species and are just turning military gear into hunting gear and barely creating new inventions like The Imperium Of Man in 40K.
I see you may, or may not be a heretic. I am sure the inquisition will be pleased with this discovery. Anyways the Yautja are actually a very advanced species, they live in a society where they no longer have to worry about scarcity of resources, so they dedicate themselves to find the most worthy pray of there to satisfy their superiority complex as a species. Think of it as ore fall elder. A species so advanced in a technological standpoint that they developed a culture to satisfy their needs for the next millennium if not more. The exception is the bloody orgies, instead they go around kidnapping all kinds of species to put them in their "game worlds" to satisfy their hunt. Now they are more like the Dark Eldar except that they don't fear their soul getting sucked away. I am sorry for this late comment, I just saw someone who knew about 40k, so I geeked out for a bit.
It would be really great to see a Master Chief versus Predator video breakdown or him going against a xenomorph or something. Your videos are just so great.
The way I understood is that the biomask essentially filters out ambient heat to allow the yautja to see body heat better. This is most pronounced during the scene in Predators after the berserker kills the normal predator.
Man the practical effects of the OG Predator are STILL amazing looking. I'm also a huge Predator fan and have read much of the comics, books and watched all the movies so love the video!
Fun Fact: There was a predator that (briefly) fought side by side with a pirate captain who's crew attempted a mutiny. After the battle, the pirate gave the Predator a flintlock pistol as a trophy before they parted ways.
Actually according to the lore the mandibles of the Yautja have function, they use them for communication during mating, plus they control the biomask with their mandibles
Now I want to see Master Chief Vs Predator. One of my favorite Predator stories was Batman Vs Predator. It’s not as campy as you think. It’s dark and really well done. Gritty it starts as a detective story where B-man is working with Gordon to track down a serial killer. Batman then becomes the target of said killer which turns out to be a Predator. It would make a great limited streaming series.
The predator didn’t self-destruct purely out of being beaten. The predators want to die honorably in battle, and Dutch was going to kill it but stopped, and so the predator believed it wouldn’t get its honorable death so (kinda like seppuku) it’s takes its own life for honor AND to keep its technology out of our hands. TLDR: predator didn’t get an honorable death so it took its own life.
Interesting analysis. What I was also expecting to see and I didn’t, was the size of Yautja Prime and its way bigger gravity, which might explain Predator’s ability to leap on Earth the same way Armstrong was on the Moon
Upsetting that I still never get notifications of your uploads, but I digress. Great video. Personally I wanna know where you get your constant good content from and how you can study it so quickly 🤔
The physical capabilities of the Yautja also support the idea that they are actual aliens. If Yautja Prime has a higher mass than Earth this would quiet easily explain the Predator's strength and speed. Earth gravity is simply much lower than what they are used to on their home. This could also be the reason why they love to hunt here: it's just way more fun in low gravity.
Predator was easily one of my favorite films as a kid. I find myself kinda leaning towards the ancient Earth origin but I think more concrete lore is needed on that subject. Hollywood's current representation of them is a bit of a mess and it's unfortunate that Ridley Scott won't except them into his Alien lore because I think we could do great work with them. Maybe the "Alphas" had something to do with it...*wink*
I was pretty into the game Wildlands a few years ago and they came out with a predator mission where you go into the forest for whatever reason and you become the yautja’s prey. Once you kill it it sets off a timer just like in the movie, first time my crew finally beat it we were not ready for the explosion and we infuriatingly didn’t make it. Super fun and challenging mission if you’re a predator fan.
Good video as always. I'm just still waiting for something from Crysis. I still remember asking for it two years ago. 😔 Then the video got re-uploaded and the comment lost forever. In the DEAD SPACE of internet.
I always think how crazy strong they are. Especially when they front raise humans to bring then eye level. Like dutch was somewhere between 230-250lbs and the Yautja just dumbell front raised his ass.
all i'm saying is i liked the predators before now, but with your entire scientific explanation which btw is amazing i'm even more in love with them and their origins and culture
Please do a few more parts as there is quite a bit of extensive lore around them that is important as apart of its culture. From Comics, books and the other movies
Well, seeing as there FBI and CIA declassified alien files that explicitly state that there are a number of reptilian species who are up to vastly superior to Humanity in physical prowess chances are up to everything Hollywood has shown us for decades in the sci-fi and even horror genres are watered down versions of what is actually true in real life. Plot twist: They actually have a similar culture to ours, these are just dentists LARPing.
As a student working towards becoming a dentist, I can confirm.

I laughed so damn hard when he said this.
In additon, I have to notify that the Yautja show great differentiation in sub-species and between clans
For example; the common city myth was about the Yautja being Matriarchal and Females being more stronger and dominant than males - the *reality* however; has shown that both males and females are roughly equalavilent in terms of strenght, as shown by the Example of Big Mama - the first cannon predator huntress
This is actually present in the films. In AVP the mandibles of the predators are noticably smaller, which means that the clan's physical differentiation might just be that.
@@deadlyattacker Additionally the AvP clan Operates on Colder climate, as well as having more dreadlocks and 'hair-like' appendices
If AVP is considered at all Canon, xenos were created by Yautja as the ultimate hunt... but lore is complex depending on where you look
@@WiseSageBum I only saw the movies, but I always thought that the Yautja found the xenomorphs and then started moving the eggs to other places rather than outright creating them.
@@nekoprankster2184
I guess it depends where you're reading lore
I remember there being a voice over in AVP saying that xenos were created by the Yautja, but other lore places wrote it as the Yautja cultivating the xenos from an existing species so it makes sense with what the Alien franchise has done
@@WiseSageBum its both right if i remember correctly xenos were found by yautja not created but the breeds we are familiar with are the results of them introducing them into specific ecosystems. Also Avp is cannon to predator universe but not to the aliens universe

to be fair, its kinda hard to spell
here in germany some say Jautja and it sounds kinda disturbing
What would they do about a bald predator?
@@dipanjanghosal1662 Fakes maybe?
Gotta do the xenomorph so it's even stevens
So we can have Alien vs Predator crossover.
I agree solely on the use of even stevens as a viable point of argument.
WHO SUMMONED ME
The yautja existed before the formation of earth as they were battling xenos in deep space at that time. They're not from earth. Read some of the dark horse comics or any of the novels and you'll see.
Yes the predator home world are called yautja prime
There are several comics that do have different canons. In one, it’s theorized in universe that they might’ve evolved from relocated Earth therapsids.
In another, it’s that the Engineers created them.
There's multiple sources about the Yautja and their origin, it's never been made super clear which source is truly cannon. According to Ridley Scott the dark horse comics aren't cannon and neither is AVP.
My point is that there's plenty of room for speculation and fan theories..

My ideas are:
- The Yautja are intelligent enough to make that stuff themselfes, they just dont like to make new of it. (true eco friendly)
- They trade with another race for that tech (boooring)
- They steal it. (hate that one because dishonor on them)
- The Yautja employ slave races making the stuff for them. (a good possibility )
- The original owners of the tech are long dead, maybe killed by the Yautja themselves. (my personal favorite)
I like to think that they arent perfect in that regard. because it makes them feel more real and less made up to be super space aryans we cant match up to.
@@eisenbesenlp6446 I think yautja were slave race, they killed the masters and took their tech, I don't remember in what comic but I liked it

The ideas in The Predator are not essentially bad, it is the execution that is bad.
We have Yautja who is supposedly here to help humans slaughtering humans left and right.

While we don't have a movie, we do have a comic with a female Yautja called Big Mama.
If you feel like looking at comics, you can find one about a human woman who joins the Yautja as a clan member. It’s good stuff.
@@canadiancanucklehead8310 Machiko Noguchi
I have a feeling if we were to get a movie featuring a female Yautja she would end up being way too humanized/sexualized. In the new game, Predator Hunting Grounds, the females are tiny and skinny compared to the males, even though it is canon that the females are bigger and stronger than the males. I'm 99% sure that design choice, which so blatantly disregarded the canon, was just to be more appealing to their audience (men) which was VERY disappointing. Anyway, knowing that, I feel like Hollywood would probably do something similar.
You didn’t even cover the creature’s feet? DISAPPOINTED!
I love the blending of all the movie genres: sci-fi, 80s action, military thriller, slasher horror
I'm looking forward to seeing this franchise further in depth especially the aliens. Keep up the good work 👌
That part when the Yautja starts laughing madly at him especially is chilling because they are mimics more than actual speaking creatures.
1. Yautja (Predator)
2. Xenomorph (Alien)
3. Sangheili (Halo)
1: Protoss from StarCraft series
2: Space Marine Primarchs from 40k, not the regular Marines, the Primarchs specifically
3: the leaders of the aliens from xcom enemy Union
If you can't tell I rather like the concept of psychic creatures
Hmmm
1. Cyberdemon (Doom)
2. Godzilla (2014)
3. Rayquaza (Pokémon)
Unlike the Thing, this one is a centralized intelligence, with complex motivations and higher intellect.
i like how this dude just explains a 1-2 hour movie in like, 8 minutes
I know its a difficult one, but can you do an analysis of tyranid bioforms(one or several) from warhammer40k?
What if due to the harsh environment of the yautja, their early ancestors carried subdued prey with there mandibles before evolving to be bipedal. This could also lead to an early rise of pack mentality and help start civilization faster than humanity.
Sounds plausible. I was thinking that they could be a mating thing, or maybe could help in vocalization.
About time you did the Yautja!! Thanks bro!
“...basically just rage quits...”

I appreciate the support man!
Human history according to my history teacher: long, boring, and typically slept through.
Human history according to Roanoke: Rock super effective.
There was scientist in a predator book of comic that did speculate that yautja were descended from earth’s therapsids.
Hmmm
1. Cyberdemon (Doom)
2. King Ghidorah (2019)
3. Rayquaza (Pokémon)
In Predator 2.......Danny Glover killed a Predator also.......With its own weapon!

Marines : we're the deadliest fighting force
Yautja:hold my alien blood coffee
This was a great video, I love the Predators man! I hope you do the Xenomorph soon!
The bigger question is do you consider the movie “The Predators” canon. Because that pretty much ruins everything.
That movie gave actual Yajutas cancer. Not Canon 🔥
The Predator isn't canon and it never will be.
I like the comic better
Should've just made a sequel to predators
Your videos are just so great.

not me vibing to halo 2 ost while learning about yautja. this video was made specifically for me and i thank you
If I remember correctly the infra red sight is a feature of the mask and not their eyes
It's their eyes as well!
They can see in infrared with out the mask, but the mask has other spectrum of infrared and other vision modes to see other light and heat signals

Hey Roanke, can you make a video on the rest of Half-Life's fauna using their Black Mesa versions and footage?
I agree, please do this my friend.
Fun Fact: There was a predator that (briefly) fought side by side with a pirate captain who's crew attempted a mutiny. After the battle, the pirate gave the Predator a flintlock pistol as a trophy before they parted ways.
Fun fact the new predator movie says otherwise
This was great. I can’t wait to see more predator and possibly eventually xenomorph videos from you
Interesting analysis. What I was also expecting to see and I didn’t, was the size of Yautja Prime and its way bigger gravity, which might explain Predator’s ability to leap on Earth the same way Armstrong was on the Moon
10:28 that moment when Roanoke used a slur meant for Sangheili to refer to a Predator lmao

Love the jab at the untrustworthy "Trust And Safety" person.
Dude, your "get to the chopper" line was the best line in the video, only matched by your recognition of your Arnold accent.
