- Descriptive video showing how to remove and replace the rear struts on a 1999-2003 Mazda Protege. This protege is equipped with sport suspension but should follow the same instructions as the lower models (LX, ES, DX)

Greetings, wanted to leave some notes for future installers. I've read you're supposed to load the suspension before fully torquing the three nuts on the strut mount to prevent premature wear of the mount. So maybe tighten them up some, put everything back together and put the tires on the ground, then torque them down. Also, the P5 and ES have the Sport Suspension, the DX and LX have regular suspension, and the MP3 has the Mazda Performance Series (MPS) suspension. I just re-watched your rear LCA video and then went outside to find my trailing arms bushings cracked, so I'll be replacing some of those soon. :) Since those six arms do include bushings, I'll load the suspension before torquing them down as well.
Great info! Wish I knew all of this at the time. I always thought the MPS and Sport suspension were basically similar, excluding the sway bars and struts/springs. Since those were BEAT company.

Great guide. But do you need alignment after replacing the strut?
You won't need to as long as all the other suspension components aren't changed out or loosened.
Did you guys have any issue with the tab on the strut for the endlink breaking? I put two new rear Kyb Struts and had this issue.. rear passenger broke off and rear driver was ready to snap off. Apparently this is an issue and people tend to weld a stiffer reinforcement plate to it. Love the vids keep em up!
Yup! That's why we replaced it. I didn't want to weld onto the strut because it's a gas filled container that could explode. Just did the safe way

Hey my guy, the nuts should be on the inside of the trunk lid. Kinda hard to see behind the bracing
Would this be the same for the protege 5?
There is technically a different part number for the strut/spring. But they both would fit and be the same process for replacement.
please part number for rear struck I have mazdaspeed protege 2003.5 my car have the struck assembly for advanced the struck is robbing on the tire

Assuming this is the MSP? I have a base model 2000 protege. Do you know a good place to get body kits? Or at least bumpers and skirts individually? CarID and Google are netting damn near nothing.
This is the MP3. Similar to MSP but no turbo. And similar to base model but with the sport suspension. It's been a while but last I remember was andysautosports website had some body kit options for them. They're getting harder to find that's for sure.

I got mine partially repainted at a local shop for not too much, they color matched rather than factory color for a lot cheaper and it was unnoticeable
@@TheCherryGarage Yeah, I’m continuing to look around but it isn’t looking good as far as aftermarket support goes. Love the car regardless but it’s not looking as though I’ll be getting much body pieces.
Can still throw some good lights, plasti dip some stuff, and keep it clean lol.

Join some MSP and Protege Facebook groups, you'll find some body kit pieces eventually. They're all interchangeable, same frames.
hello Recommend Mazda Protege, is it a good car? Is it worth buying? 1.6 or 2.0 engines?
Loved it when I had it, now they're fairly old and they are fairly cheap. Finding one with low miles or no rust will be hard. The 2.0 engine is the way to go for sure
