The Line 6 M9 stompbox modeler is a fantastic unit with over 100 high quality effects. Highly recommended. Guitar used: Michael Kelly Patriot Shadow. Amp used: Mack GEM from www.mackamps.com
Yes and yes, you can have 3 distortions in a row if you like, then just turn any of them on/off.
There are lots of good compressors in it, which works great for a clean boost effect.
Thanks!
Yes, I am pulling off on the G string, and playing notes on the A string from the A Mixolydian mode. Alternating back and forth, while I'm "traveling" up the neck. I don't play the open A string by itself. Hope that helps. Lesson some time later perhaps!
Video quality is spectacular Robert. Very nice.
It’s a great pedal. It replaced an Arion SCH-1, and El Capistan on my board. Not because it sounds “better.” But because it sounds nearly as good, and opens up so many more options. I literally have to retrain myself with thinking about my board. I still have a Flint for basic verb duties, with the M9 in true bypass mode, but I can easily assign the verb back on the M9, drop an Iridium in the Flints place, and boom, a *very *capable direct rig. That flexibility is priceless.
Hey guys! Would you like me to do another demo like this, but with no string sounds coming through? Such a video tends to be long though, since there are SO MANY sounds in this baby! Let me know, okay?
You get so much more with this unit. You won't start thinking "hmm, I need a delay pedal now, or a chorus, or a compressor... " etc - it's all in here. Plus it's compact!
@greenstJimmy No they are independent. Like the pedals hooked up together. However, it also has scenes, and each scene can have whatever combination of stompbox models you want.
Still watching in 2020... 10 years later
Thanks for posting this demo. I was contemplating buying this or another multi fx pedal. Has lots of cool and fun sounds... That I will never use. This confirms that I will stick with my individual analogue pedals and get that one sound that I really want. However, I definitely see the use of this for live players with a diverse setlist or anyone who is not super anal about their sound. and does not want to spend too much. I don't dare add up how much my pedals have cost me lol... This is a real bang for your buck system.
The tube screamer and tube drive sounds really good through a good tube amp!
@Oyhus Haven't tried it, but I am sure it will work great. Just make sure the loop is set to operate at instrument level.
I'm also surprised how nicely this thing does clean-ish sounds. Mess around with some low gain settings on the the tube drive, and some of the filters, you can store various versions clean settings. One of most immediately addicting pieces of gear I've ever owned. I want to say though, I will be using it as much for recording as I will for gigging, but based on what I am hearing now, I would use it just as a gigging board as well.
Hmm, by practicing a lot. I spent time playing slowly to a drum machine, in order to develop some kind of accuracy. Then you work up the speed, slowly. Over time, you'll be able to play faster.
But please, don't think that playing fast is "better" in any way. It can sound cool at times, but it's really not that important. Playing good lines and ideas, whether slower or fast, is what you should focus on.
@fenderilize Most Od's and Distortions sound very organic to me. Some are more exciting than others, but definitely worth trying. I have no problem gigging with only the M9 on my pedal board.
@gofusiesbass09 Not meant for the computer - get the HD units for that - they have USB connectivity for you.
@MarvinMoshaka Michael Kelly Patriot Shadow.
Thank you Robert, keep these videos coming! You're really good at this...
Sounds great with the MK Patriot!!!
@cornflakes2794 Yes, you can assign whatever pedal to any stompbox button, so it is up to you.
I just bought this thanks to your review. It was originally going the Boss or TC! But the distortion punch through at about .51, was the selling point. Thanks
Very nice demo, Robert. The Verb stuff alone is worth the price of the whole M9.
Add an expression pedal (think dive bombs, pitch glide, wah, and volume swells), and you can rule the world!
man your presentation & playing is phenomenal..you kick ass
@EroWheel Works great in the loop. You will love it.
@tededface It does fine, you really need to try one out and see what you think.
Its perfect for any use. Couldn't live without it.
Yes, using the delays, modulations, etc would work great in a loop.
classic distortion my ass! that sounds like a monster tube amp on anabolic steroids... I actually like it more than the heavy distortion!
just ordered one Robert! sounds great
Yes, if you use it in an effect loop. I use it like this myself. It's a great box. Maybe you would be able to find better single effects, but if you hear what you have, you won't need them.
You're a great guitar player, I like your style very much.
Thank you very much.
@TheSoundNoOneNoticed
Perfect sense, thanks very much! Hopefully picking one up next week, I was a bit sceptical about using modelled effects, but tried one and they sound great! Looking forward to leaving the huge pedalboard at home :)
wow I have one of these and never knew it did so much. thanks so much for the very nice exhaustive review! musicians like me adore people like you on youtube.
Hi, you can use any 3 effects you want at a time.
Would I b able to get that lo-fi sound on this pedal? Like that vibrato and chorus sound?
Thanks rotren~ I always enjoy your demo vids and your playing is awesome. How's the quality of the Drives including ods and distortions? Do you still feel digital?
I had 14 individual stomp boxes mostly BBE and i sold them all except my Wah, whammy and tuner and got the M13 it is a killer unit once you make you scenes it is a great live unit.. Ditch your stomp boxes and get one of these ....
Very nice Robert. What were the patches used in bb the last riffs you played on the video?
Thanks! I do not remember. This was a long time ago.
Amazing review, very complete, nice audio and great guitar playing also. Thanks man! (If you got the time show us the M9 loop on your style, i could bet you´d do great!)
@Tuscopa You can save in presets for different pedal boards. As for amp channels, it depends if you have a footswitch for that.
Wow you master a lot of styles and that's what makes a good guitarplayer in my opinion.
How did you learn to play so lightning fast? do you have some tips or techniques for me? Because I'd really like to play that good someday.
Thanks, I think that was the comment of the year right there.
@rotren That'd be great, maybe even have a look at more of the sounds? or allow a view of the pedal as you play maybe?
thorough review, good job.
@TaylorGilmour I do use it live, yes. No problem there.
Any order you want! That is the uber-cool thing.
I just ran through this thing the Phaser Flanger, Reverb, Univibe are awsome I'm not sold on the fuzz, but this thing is worth its weight. My fulltone Deja Vibe almost cost the same amount and its slightly better.
nice demo :) I own a m 13 and just love it. it´s getting even better after the update. did you know that you can use every scene with a midi-preset and switch your amp-channel just by choosing a scene? ok, it doesn´t capture the sound of some stomp boxes like lovepedal, fulltone or z.vex but that doesn´t matter if you need a perfect setup for gigs.90% works fine with me^^ after all.. your fingers had to create most of your sound.
@rotren My bad, i didn't realise the video was a view of the pedal, i doubt there are many more sounds for you to cover but perhaps another video with some expression pedal stuff?
Hi rotren how does this compare to the Boss Gt-10 effects unit. Which one gets your vote. Also just grabbed another Suhr T so will put photo's on your site later.
thanks for the great Video!!!! I will buy one soon!! I love Line 6 but still a Boss man as well..
The delay can oscillate on it's own or you can run the output to the second input and turn the output on with an A/B box to make it so it feeds back into itself.
Hello..! nice review there well done.
Can you store 3 different modulation effects, let's say chorus phaser and flanger,
and use them all three at the same time?
Thank you for your time.
@98danio Michael Kelly Patriot Shadow.
@rotren Im undecided in want I want to buy. I have my mind in the nova system and the Line 6 M9.
Can you help me on my decision. Which one do you think is better for playing in a band. I want warm sounds!
Great Video! Keep rocking!
nice, how would you compare it to say, having a few of the cool cat pedals hooked up instead?
Make that 1:16 when you added the Classic Distortion. I run a clean setup like yours with a egnator 40. Very nice pedal.
Thanks, glad you liked my demo!
hey dude would you play this thing live on a gig? sounds pretty good here
Geee......You rock man...nice playing......great sound too.
You are awesome man, cheers.
what kinda camera do u use for recording the picture and audio sounds wonderful :)
An octaver and a Volume pedal in front of this would be great, especially for swells!
@gofusiesbass09 not quite.... on the most recent omar group tour he also had a DE7, memory boy deluxe, and an mxr micro amp. + an exrpession pedal
Yes, that's right. One effect per button.
SO AWESOME!! U SOUND GREAT!!
would be better with the sound if we do not ear the sound of the strings
anyway thaxs a lot for this review
@SilverfangX777 You need two guitar cables and an amp.
what kind of things did you practice with a drum machine? just going up and down scales and digital exercises and stuff?
Hi mate. Cool review.
Still don't geting how to change scenes? Is there any "bank' option like Boss GT's multiFx. Cheers.
Thanks for the review. I bought the M9 and I use it with my Stratocaster. With my stereo headphones (using a Y adapter plugged in L and R) I can only hear the sound it in my left ear, even when I use effects that are supposed to be stereo. Does that mean that when the input is mono the output is always mono?
How is the looping feature in this unit? Does it do the same job as the dedicated loop pedal?
I question L6's current level of quality control. My M5, which I've had less than a year, had something up with the display screen from day one, it was unusable and mostly unreadable. Now the mode button does nothing when pressed; it's stuck on the "delay" bank only. It's a great-sounding box; L6's implementation of and choices of efx are excellent. Pity they fall apart in weeks.
Can u add reverb & delay to the distortion and change. It sounds 20 years old like a old ping pong machine
Could i just plug this in the sound system. Does it have an amp modeler?
No amp modeler. This is only a pedal modeler.
@jcanderton You can only use 3 at a time.
Ok, here is my main question. Can you create a patch on the M9 that will sound identical to your clean guitar bypassed signal ?
you can assign a different effect type to each button right?...say i wanted a delay on B1/B2/A3, a reverb on B3, distortion on A1, and a mod on A2...i could do that right?
I own the M9, and as an oldster who generally dislikes digital guitar fx, I am astonished at how good this thing sounds. It's not GREAT great, but perfect for us who don't use a lot of fx but want something to play with. In many ways, I like it's sound better than the TC G-Force I used to own, which costs a lot more.
Dolphinstreet would you consider using the M9 as a noise gate as well?.
I use several pedals, mostly OD and distortions, but I don't have a noise gate and always get a lot of noise. I own a Line6 M9, but I never use it, if it works I will definitely put it on my board. Where should I put it if I don't want to take out any pedals (no fx loop)? My current pedalboard: polytune/ts808/ts9/OCD/DS-1/vicking distortion/boss PS-6/memory man/ dd3/ flashback X4/ Tc HOF /TR-2/ Crate SS Amp.
Thanks.
Sure that should work. I would put it last in the chain.
@MetalMonsterGuitar Yes
@rotren Thank you! I use an Engl Blackmore, and it doesn't have a switch for line/instrument level. I haven't really looked into that stuff either, so I'm not competent to really respond to that =P
But how is the distortion and delay. To andy timmons halo pedal and @+
@gofusiesbass09 so did i, i was front row right infront of omar. the stage was two feet high with no barrier, i could have turned any of the knobs on any one of his pedals at any time. I also took pics, i'm looking at the picture right now in fact. sorry but you dont know what you saw, you are wrong. end of story. and im not your bro, holmes.
@laingy007 Haven't tried the GT-10 so I don't know.
@ Dolphinstreet - if you are still using this board could you do another updated overview and provide your thoughts after you've been using it for a while now.
I use the M9 all the time live. I still love it - it has so many great sounds and it does not mess up me regular tone either. The only drawback is you can only have 3 stompbox models in a row (4 with the M13) but I combine it with my analog pedals and it works well. This is probably the best deal or purchase for someone who is looking into getting some useful pedals. This unit gives you A LOT for the money.
I am planing to buy the m9 but before I do, I need to know if I can save a certain sound on each switch? Example: delay+reverb+distortion - switch 1 / chorus + reverb - switch 2 / chorus + reverb -switch 3 etc. I am planning to use it live & really need quick switching between presets. Thanks
+Saša Pavšić Each switch has only one sound. You can have 3 effects on at the same time. These are saved as SCENES. So for example, you can have: distortion+delay+reverb, or compressor+chorus+delay and so on, and each can be saved. You can not have more than 3 on at the same time.
There are 3 columns with 6 switches. I could have for example, distortion or overdrive for the first column, chorus or phaser for the second column, and maybe reverb or delay for the last column. I can then switch between the two for each column at any time.
Thank you very much for an answer. So if I need some very long reverb+delay for somekind of intro, and then I have to switch to let say overdrive+other reverb; I have to tap 1x reverb + 1x delay ON; then the same thing to turn them OFF and then 1x overdrive +1 x reverb ON?
+Saša Pavšić I don't get your question. This is how it works - each button has ONE effect. You can have THREE effects on at the same time, maximum. If you have overdrive on top left button (1st column) and you want change to compressor instead of overdrive, you press the bottom left button (1st column). That will change from overdrive to compressor. Note that you don't turn anything on/off - you simply switch between the two. You can do the same for the remaining 2 columns.
+Robert Renman my question would be, if I save 3 different effects as scene 1, and other 3 effects as scene 2, can I switch between 2 scenes with just one tap?
No.
Hi,, can I put 6 effects and use them at same time? For ex: Put chorus, delay, vibrato, phaser, flanger e reverb on six foots?
Does it have a boost solo function, and can you change between different distortions quickly and efficiently?
I am trying to decide weather to get this one or the m13, i think the m13 may be a little overkill though, due to the fact i like my dry distortion that my orange rocker 30 produces.
don't really like some of the sound on this line6 m9 but u play some good licks! what the different between the line6 m9 and the line6 pod hd desk top? right now the line6 pod hd is on sell for $200.
The M9 is meant to run into an amp, not a computer. The HD desktop is meant to be run into a computer.
Dolphinstreet i see alot of people run the hd desktop into they amp by watching these videos i guess u can run into a computer and and a amp! i check out these 2 unit i have to said the hd desktop have more better sound. but just my opinion!
@fireflys127 It's a great buy.
Trace Bundy uses this, his Urban Challenge is awesome
Can you hook this up to your computer for easy control over what you wanna do?
What happens when you are running three effects and you step on a 4th? Which one do you lose?
@brunosartoretto Yes and Yes - works great in effects loop too.
Does it have the "Growler" effect that the FM4 features?
It has global noise reduction in it, I've used it with 2 Roland Cube 60s cranked and heard no hiss or feedback unless I wanted it.
You should try putting the mic to the amp so we don't hear your guitar strings.
Hop on Line 6's forums and I'll bet you get someone to help you out with that. I have an HD500 and gig with it regularly, and I'm notoriously hard on gear (both my guitars and the HD500 have all been run over in their case by a car!!). If a unit got past QA at L6, they don't want you unhappy.
i dont understand how digital distortion works, but it doesnt sound too bad! not exactly the tube saturation loveliness people look for tho
can you use the three effects and the looper at the same time?
Do you think that the reverbs, delays and looper are good for an acoustic guitar?
Absolutely
