  • Identifying Vanda orchids involves recognizing specific features commonly found in this genus. Vanda orchids are known for their vibrant, showy flowers and unique growth habits. Here are key characteristics that can help in identifying a Vanda orchid:
    1. *Growth Habit:* Vanda orchids are epiphytic, meaning they typically grow on other plants or surfaces without being parasitic. They might also be cultivated in hanging baskets or pots with an open growing medium.
    2. *Roots:* Vanda orchids often have extensive, thick, and exposed roots. These roots are silver-grey or white in color and play a crucial role in water and nutrient absorption. They are aerial and can be seen growing outside the pot or hanging basket.
    3. *Leaves:* Vanda orchids usually have strap-like, leathery, and oblong leaves. The leaves grow alternately along the stem and can be glossy green in color. Some species might exhibit mottled or variegated leaf patterns.
    4. *Flowers:* Vanda orchids produce vibrant, large, and often fragrant flowers. The blooms can be various colors, including shades of purple, blue, pink, yellow, and white. The flowers typically grow on tall, upright spikes and are quite showy.
    5. *Growing Requirements:* Vanda orchids thrive in bright, indirect light and require good air circulation. They prefer warm to intermediate temperatures and high humidity. They are commonly found in tropical regions and are cultivated in areas with similar conditions.
    6. *Cultural Characteristics:* Vanda orchids are commonly grown in hanging baskets or mounted on slabs of wood or cork. Their aerial roots need to remain exposed to allow proper air circulation and prevent rotting.
    When trying to identify a Vanda orchid, examining these key features-such as the appearance of the roots, leaves, flowers, and growth habit-can help distinguish it from other orchid genera. Utilizing botanical guides, orchid reference books, or online resources with detailed descriptions and images of Vanda species and hybrids can also aid in accurate identification. Additionally, seeking advice from experienced orchid growers or enthusiasts can provide valuable insights into identifying Vanda orchids.

    Thanks for a great video! Do you have a video on how to estimate the age of a vanda?

    • @thenaturecompany
      @thenaturecompany  3 місяці тому

      oh dear that is an almost impossible task lol , it will all depend on a large variety of factors such as climate , feed , watering , humidity , light , number of daylight hours , temperatures and the specific cross / species (some are slow growers) . If one is grown in ideal conditions it can grow 100 times faster than one grown on the edge and can be 10 times younger but 10 times bigger . You can send a pic to our facebook and I will give you my best guess lol

      all my strap leaf vandas are also bare root , they tend to rot very eaily in any media for me . They might need higher light if they are not flowering . Also remember to low level feed often .

    In inverno ogni quanto consigli di bagnare le radici della vanda? Io vivo al centro sud d'Italia quasi mai scendiamo al di sotto dei 5 gradi siamo quasi sempre intorno ai 12 anche in inverno

    • @thenaturecompany

      Se i tuoi livelli di umidità sono bassi in inverno e i tuoi vanda sono a radice nuda, allora suggerirei di farlo ogni giorno. Se i livelli di umidità sono alti ma la temperatura non supera i 20 durante il giorno, 2 volte a settimana dovrebbero essere sufficienti. Tutto questo cambierà se hai dei media, semi teretes in pieno sole in vasi come quelli che coltiviamo, possibilmente innaffio solo 1 volta a settimana e permetto alla rugiada di depositarsi su di loro al mattino e alla sera. Se mi fornisci maggiori dettagli su come coltivi il tuo e una regione in cui posso controllare il tuo clima, posso aiutarti ulteriormente. 👌

      @@thenaturecompany sei davvero molto gentile 🙏🏼🥰 ho Vanda a radice nuda, in casa davanti alla finestra, con lampada e umidificatore, in casa siamo intorno ai 18 gradi 😊

      Avrei una piccola bottiglia spray d'acqua accanto alla Vanda e darei alle radici un po' di spray almeno una volta al giorno, solo uno spritz leggero e poi una buona annaffiatura una volta alla settimana con il fertilizzante. Spero che questo aiuti 🫂💕
