  • Identifying an orchid as a Dendrobium involves observing specific botanical characteristics commonly found in this genus. While there are various species and hybrids within the Dendrobium genus, here are some general features that can help in recognizing a Dendrobium orchid:
Pseudobulbs: Many Dendrobium species have pseudobulbs, which are swollen stem-like structures that store water and nutrients. These pseudobulbs can vary in shape and size, from elongated canes to more rounded or club-shaped structures.
Leaves: Dendrobium orchid leaves are usually alternate, simple, and elongated, growing along the length of the pseudobulb. The leaves can vary in shape from strap-like to more lanceolate or oblong.
Flowers: Dendrobiums produce flowers in a wide array of colors, shapes, and sizes. The flowers often grow from nodes along the stems or canes. They might appear singly or in clusters, with some species displaying showy, fragrant blooms.
Growing Habit: Dendrobiums can be epiphytic (growing on other plants), lithophytic (growing on rocks), or occasionally terrestrial. They generally prefer well-draining growing media and are commonly found in tropical or subtropical regions.
Cultural Characteristics: Understanding the cultural requirements can also help identify a Dendrobium. These orchids might have specific temperature preferences-some prefer warm conditions, while others thrive in intermediate to cooler environments.
When trying to identify an orchid as a Dendrobium, it's beneficial to use botanical guides, orchid reference books, or online resources that provide detailed descriptions, images, and illustrations of various Dendrobium species and hybrids. Additionally, seeking advice from experienced orchid growers or botanists can be invaluable in correctly identifying orchids within the Dendrobium genus.

One of my hard canes has a major new growth. Along w/this the leaves on 2 of its canes have yellowed & dropped. The positioning within the pot indicates it will be due 4a repotting. Should I wait till spring 2 repot & leave the leafless canes there 4 now ?

They should be in constant growing mode in your climate , so you can repot these any time of year there. I would also leave the leafless canes attached until they go brown and dry out . They can still flower and produce keikis .

Thankyou for the joyous knowledge and insight ! They are in "wonke" ceramic pots with lots of holes now. What's the best pot type for these ? Tera Cotta ? Plastic ?

Terracotta is always the best if they have rooted through the holes in the pot and if you have used an inorganic media such as lava rock there is no need to repot unless the pots are now too small and the plants top heavy . You can just put the pot as it is into a bigger one with more lava rock to fill ( or charcoal ) . You can tell me more on the media etc if you need more advice 🫰

Square Ceramic pot ... 5"x5"and 5" deep w/ lots of holes. Plant is 17 inches tall. Regular orchid mix, primarily bark, a little charcoal, no moss & no perilite that I can see. Purchased @ a big box store. Honestly not 💯 percent sure how long its been in that pot. I've had it 3/4 of a year. Plant has 6 canes, two are dead & cut off low. One is going leafless & about to go byby. Two are healthy & one is new & growing fast. The new one is going off on a 45 degee angle & it looks really weird to be quite honest. Also, that new growth is @ the edge of the pot & the old growth remanents are all in the back of the pot. I hope this helps, short of sending you a pic, this is the best I can do.
