Aladdin Movie Description:
Aladdin is a 1992 American animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 31st Disney animated feature film and the fourth produced during the Disney Renaissance, it is based on the Arabic folktale of the same name from the One Thousand and One Nights. The film was produced and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements from a screenplay they co-wrote with the writing team of Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. Featuring the voices of Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin, and Jonathan Freeman, the film follows the titular Aladdin, an Arabian street urchin, who finds a magic lamp containing a genie. With the genie's help, Aladdin disguises himself as a wealthy prince and tries to impress the Sultan in order to win the heart of his free-spirited daughter, Princess Jasmine, as the Sultan's evil vizier Jafar plots to steal the magic lamp for his own uses.
Lyricist Howard Ashman first pitched the idea, and the screenplay went through three drafts before then-Disney Studios president Jeffrey Katzenberg agreed to its production. The animators based their designs on the work of caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, and computers were used for both finishing the artwork and creating some animated elements. The musical score was written by Alan Menken and features six songs with lyrics written by both Ashman and Sir Tim Rice, who took over after Ashman's death.
Aladdin was released on November 11, 1992. It received positive reviews from critics (particularly for Williams' performance). It was a commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1992 with an earning of over $504 million in worldwide box office revenue. Upon release, it became the first animated feature to reach the half-billion-dollar mark and was the highest-grossing animated film of all time until it was surpassed by The Lion King (1994).
Aladdin garnered two Academy Awards, as well as other accolades for its soundtrack, which had the first and only number from a Disney feature to earn a Grammy Award for Song of the Year, for the film's "A Whole New World," sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle. The film's home video VHS release also set a sales record and grossed about $500 million in the United States. Aladdin's success led to various derived works and other material inspired by the film, including two direct-to-video sequels The Return of Jafar (1994) and Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996), an animated television series, and a Broadway adaptation. A live-action film adaptation directed by Guy Ritchie was released on May 24, 2019.

I saw a still where Aladdin and Genie were hugging that said “you’re free, genie” when Robin passed. It made me cry uncontrollably. I’m tearing up right now actually.
My brother texted that to me right after. I asked why he would do that to me.
I was shocked when he died. I was so shocked that he died. That I didn't cry.
I remembered when aladdin aired on disney channel around williams' death, they had a nice message as a tribute when the movie ended. Touching message
I felt the same way when I rewatched Hook and he flies into the air saying "Thank you for believing."

A Whole New World was huge in the Filipino-American community. We all had to sing the song at events.
She released a solo album back in the 90s that included a duet with Brad Kane, the singing voice of Aladdin. It was like getting a bonus song from the movie. 😄

Scott Weinger, the voice of Aladdin, recorded this movie when he was 15. He's 47 now and STILL recording things as Aladdin in videogames and such.

Robin Williams was also the street vendor in the beginning. God I miss him, such a huge part of my childhood in all the stuff he did.
I miss him too. But if he were still alive today. I doubt he would have been acting. He had Lewy Body Dementia. Unlike with regular dementia where you lose your older memories. People with Lewy Body Dementia have difficulty forming newer memories. So acting in films or a tv ahow or doing comedy specials would have been difficult.
The peddler was originally supposed to be revealed to be Genie at the end of the movie but that was changed in re-writes after the peddler's scene was already animated. That's why he only has four fingers instead of five.
I recognized Robin's voice the instant he went into his spiel with the tent. As if the "too close" line wasn't typical of him enough.
Most of the scene with the peddler going through the items for sale was improvised too. They gave Robin Williams a table of things to play with & let him do what he does best.
This is a great animated movie since the 90s

The absolute comedic genius of both Robin Williams and Gilbert Gottfried cannot be overstated. Especially Williams' incredible improvised lines. Johnathan Freeman as Jafar is also an amazing role I feel doesn't get enough credit.

This movie is a good example of why animation as a medium exists. A shape-shifting, powerful, spontaneous being like Genie doesn't translate as well to live action because our brains recognize a human person and then are confused when the human doesn't follow physical rules (the uncanny valley). Animation already registers to us as make believe, so things changing shape don't seem out of place. Also, Genie was unique in that they let Robin Williams improv and then animated the character off of the lines rather than the other way around. The result is a character that is unified and on brand no matter what he does or says. Live action doesn't lend itself to that type of thing.
For an even more spectacular example just watch a bit of the cartoon Avatar the Last Airbender. When they tried it live action it was only DARK.

What? Only dumb people can't accept live action as fantasy. The live action Aladdin was one of the best, and Will Smith did a fantastic job
Not only did Robin Williams sing the Genie's songs, he did the voice of the old man in the opening song as well...all for scale because he wanted to do a show his kids could watch and love.
Also, Robin ad-libbed so many great lines, they say there are a few hours of Genie recordings that have never been publicly played. They had to be left out of the movie mainly because they couldn't possibly have used them all in a movie of less than 4 or 5 hours.
#Pokyhawk they could've honored Robin Williams further by adding those hidden songs in platinum addition or 30th anniversary addition of Aladdin release in collection volume.. instead of not sharing it and locking it away in a fort Knox fault 😮💨

They gave him a table of stuff and what was on the table was hidden either under a sheet or his eyes were closed and he had to describe what he was touching... the results is genius

My absolute favorite line
I've always thought that line would be much funnier if, after he says, "Will not break," and it breaks, he just quickly whisked the item out of sight and moved on as if nothing had happened. Saying, "It broke" is just telling us what we already know.
Despite him not being a classically trained singer, Robin Williams was amazing as Genie. The way he sang "Friend like Me" and "Prince Ali" is top-notch.

While the 3rd movie isn't as well known, it's still really good and rounds out the trilogy nicely. Robin Williams actually didn't return to the 2nd movie to play Genie, but he did return to the 3rd.
I second this. King of Thieves is one of the best sequels Disney ever put out in that era. I was 12 when it released and was legitimately surprised at how dark the story got with all the conflict between Aladdin and his father, and the fact that he spent a good chunk of the movie legitimately angry (with good reason, too). "You walked away from your family" and "I'm your son, but I can't live your life"? That was deep stuff for a Disney movie back then.

By the way .. Gazaam the same thief in the first movie with Jafar(that was suppose to be Aladdin's father... But the story never shifted) so he got recasted into the third movie.. The president at the time was a real asshole, first they used the genie to sell to kids which Robin said he didn't want and second they tried to sabotage Fern Gully which he voiced a character in. IIRC the president before that came back to helm disney and talked Robin to come back for the 2nd sequel.

Jasmine is 16 and back in those days, that age was appropriate in thinking about marriage. Aladdin is 18. An age gap but only by 2 years. They wait a while before they marry though. There was a TV series that showed more adventures of them being together and a couple movies after before being officially married in the 3rd movie.

I’m an animator and I learned that it was actually a competition going on with Robin and the animators. They were both trying to one-up each other and the result is what you see. Well, some of it because we know Robin could go on for days. Lol

Aladdin’s such a great film. One of my favorite Disney films of all time! Aladdin and Jasmine have excellent chemistry, the Genie is absolutely hilarious, and Jafar is a very great and intimidating villain.
I never connected to any of the Disney princesses growing up until Jasmine was introduced. She was the 1st one not wearing a dress and despite needing to be saved in the end, she still wasn't the typical "damsel in distress". Love her so much.
For me, as having a gf with a little girl in the early 90s, Aladdin and Lion King were seen in the theaters, then on VHS (over and over, over and over.....*sigh*)

Robin Williams was also the salesman in the beginning. They put him in a room with a table of items and just let him riff. What’s in the film was animated around his material. Greatest. Ever.
That opening scene was mostly all improvised by Robin Williams. His work as Genie was brilliant in this movie.
Watching this performance by Robin Williams, you can really appreciate how uniquely his mind worked. He really put so much into this role, and it honestly changed the game for voice acting. Knowing that Disney's animators let him improvise and do all of his impressions and seemingly random jokes and they animated around them was such a good gamble to make - it continues to pay off. It blows my mind that Disney came out with The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King within a five year period (1989-1994). To make one of those movies would have been a tremendous achievement, but all of them? And in such a short period of time? Unreal.

If I were to guess what the controversial thing in this movie was, there's a line in the first song "Arabian Nights" where they say "where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face. it's barbaric but hey, it's home". It was changed in later versions but they still left in the "it's barbaric but hey, it's home" line even though it doesn't make sense in the revised version
Not just that, but since the movie came out, there were people calling it racist. The exaggerated facial features (hooked noses and more while Aladdin/Jasmine looked American) were a problem. {paraphrasing a state from a critic}, the negative portrayal of Arab culture as a whole bothered some folks too.

@@AlastorsShadowDemon That because they're looking for something to get mad about. The noses are a staple of Disney, look at Clayton from Tarzan or Frolo from Hunchback. Plus this isn't "Arab" culture, it's a post-apocalyptic future. That's why Genie's last master was 10,000 years ago, why Genie is able to reference so many of the "modern day" celebrities and pop culture , and why the game has a stop sign buried in the sand, etc.

They wrote him a script but it sounded very mechanic, so they told him free ball it. They had to get more tape because he gave them 3-5 hours of material for Genie. He was the first comic to ever get an award for an animation character. He is legendary and always been my fav character in Aladdin. My all time favorite actor.
I'm pleased you recognized that the late Gilbert Gottfried voiced Iago the Parrot. He had such a distinct voice in real life, yet it's still admirable in my honest opinion. Doesn't surprise me about Scott Weinger though. Absolutely no disrespect intended either. Back then, he was basically only known for his recurring role on Full House.

This comment really hit me with the fact that they've passed. Of course I was aware that both William and Gottfried had passed, but something about this just made it *hit.* Two absolutely iconic roles in animation, from the same movie, just gone.
I actually liked the 3rd Aladdin (And the Prince of Thieves) better than the 2nd one (Return of Jafar) I think I remember something about the voice of Jasmin was different in the second one, but then they brought the original voice back in the third one.
No, Jasmine's voice never changed. Linda Larkin has voiced her in every single thing she's ever appeared in, the same as Scott Weinger with Aladdin. Robin Williams was the one who came back for King of Thieves; in Return of Jafar and the TV series Genie was voiced by Dan Castellaneta, the voice of Homer Simpson. He didn't do a bad job, either, especially with how big those shoes were to fill.
The first time I watched Aladdin after Robin Williams passed I cried. Now I just get teary every time.

I'm pretty sure Jasmine is 16 in the movie whereas Aladdin is 18. You might be confusing the age between Jasmine and Pocahontas! Pocahontas was 12, but in the Disney movie, they upped her age to 18/19. Robin Williams was the best in the movie and sometimes it's hard re-watching without being sad, but man it's so nostalgic! great reaction though can't wait to see what else you're going to be reacting to!

The line: "Genie, wake up and smell the humus!" made me laugh so hard when I first heard it at 6 years old. 🤣🤣 I was just old enough in an immigrant household to know not to expect Arabic words on American TV and movies, so hearing Robin Williams deliver that line was so shocking it made my brother and I lose it laughing.... In a way, this movie more than any other movie made me feel more "represented" (whatever tf that means) as a Muslim Arab American kid in the 90s.

I'm still pretty confused about the content warning, although it's been forever since I've watched Aladdin.. Looking it up, it says there are "oriental" stereotypes? If I had to guess, Genie shapeshifts into an offensive Asian stereotype at some point maybe? Incredibly unsure.
@@qrowing I'm still confused too and I've been thinking about it since Mel posted this, lol. There was a time in the English language where "Oriental" meant "Middle Eastern," and not "Far Eastern." But either way, I can't really pick out any offensive stereotypes... The closest I can come up with is the name "Ababwa" which is not a real name anywhere lol, but then I looked at everyone else's names and they were all culturally appropriate (even if some are anglicized, like Aladdin instead of Alaa-uddin). So why did they pick a fake Arabic last name for Price Ali? I don't know if it's intentional, but it seems pretty brilliant that when Aladdin becomes a fake prince, he gets a "fake" name... So fake even Jafar can't pronounce it 🤣🤣

These classics have stood the test of time which is one reason why people (including myself) don't care for the remakes. They are not needed. They should just re-release these into theaters for the younger generations to enjoy.
Keeping these classic films alive allows the legacy of the great actors/comedians like Robin Williams to carry on for future generations. The remakes only serve to bury them in my opinion.
As amazing as the performances are in this movie, Jonathan Freeman As Jafar is super underrated imo. He's by far the most powerful Disney villain of his day, with the BEST evil villain laugh ever arguably. I wish I could have seen this in theatres

Imago is a really underrated villainous sidekick. He actually feels more like Jafar’s partner at times, and he even comes up with the plan to marry Jasmine. On top of that the late Gilbert Gottfreid is an absolute riot.

And Jonathan Freeman has basically been Jafar in almost everything afterwards (I mean he was Jafar in the sequel, the games, the Kingdom Hearts games, House of Mouse, his voice-work in the Disney parks, his appearance in an episode of Hercules where he teamed up with James Woods as Hades, and even on Broadway; the only times he hasn't been Jafar would be the live-action appearances in the parks as well as the live-action remake of the film).
Not to mention he voiced Stolas father in helluva boss season 2
I like to tell people this not well known fact he was actually afraid of birds in real life and the bigger the scarier to him. In a special only found on the DVD he went into a pet shops and got introduced to different birds to get over his fear and let a scarlet macaw(the same type Iago is) sit on his shoulder while doing the Jafar voice. Honestly to go so far is amazing! He is a real inspiration to me. Also a while back you could cameo with him and have him say whatever you want!
Jeremy Irons killed that role so hard even if the cgi version had been good it would never have come close for scar.
I think you are thinking of Pocahontas that was 12 years old in real life. Of course Disney changed her to be older in the animation .Jasmine is at wedlock age.
I think in Arab countries the age was sixteen, so Jasmine's still fifteen, though only a few days off her birthday.
They said the movie took place three days before her 18th birthday. Jasmine is 18 years old

The captain of the guard - later named Razoul - was voiced by Disney legend Jim Cummings, mostly famous for voicing Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, and he played Fuzzy Lumpkins on the Powerpuff Girls.
The reason his voice is familiar to you here is because it's basically the same voice he's used for Pegleg Pete the last thirty years.
Side note: i didn't mention this in your groove video, but while we're talking about Pooh Bear, the voice of Piglet was the old man Kuzco threw out the window.
Robin Williams was the best character, 31 years later, still the better version.

@@lampad4549 For Jasmine's age, the original script before it was trashed by Jeffrey Katzenberg (I have a copy of it in my collection) as well as the book "Aladdin: The Making of an Animated Film" where the production team talks about the changes. In the original script they were both supposed to be around 14, but in the re-write they upped the ages to make the romance work.
Parts of Friend Like Me had actually already been animated at that point, though, so if you look at the song in slow motion there are brief clips where you see Aladdin's much younger character design. It's just so quick at full speed that they were able to get away with not re-animating it because they were already VERY behind schedule.
As for Aladdin's age in the TV series, when they get lost in the back alleys of Agrabah he says, "I've been wandering these alleys for 17 years, but suddenly they seem all different; all switched around." I THINK that was in the episode "The Prophet Motive" but it's been a minute since I've watched the series since Disney likes to pretend it never existed.

The ending where the moon turns around and the genie is laughing, then he pulls the paper back and says to the audience, "made ya look"...
Is a reference to another movie he was in, The Adventures of Baron Munchousin, where Robin played the ruler of the moon, and a reference to the oldest movie on record.
I will forever be sad that I never got to meet Robin Williams. Also that open skit from Robin Williams was completely improv. He came up with that on the spot and they just put it in the movie.
Robin Williams also voiced the merchant in the beginning and the "Still I think he's rather tasty" lady who grabs Aladdin :D

There is a broadway musical of Aladdin, which I’ve seen either in part or in full but the man who plays Genie in the musical did a special after Robin passed where after the show he made a speech about Robin and he invited the whole crowd to sing “Friend like me” with him. I couldn’t watch it all because it was making me cry so hard but I do remember this that he said something to the affect of “Let us not forget that he was not just an incredible actor but an incredible man and a father” It might still be up on UA-cam. It’s honestly enough to make even a strong man weep because we forget he wasn’t just an actor he was a person. We truly will never have a friend like him ♥️
If you love this movie you'll love Mulan too, the story and comedy, the whole movie is just sooo good. Maybe it's because I'm extremely nostalgic but it's really good. ❤

Aladdin received criticism when it came out because detractors claimed that it trafficked in dated stereotypes for the dangers of the swarthy Arab (My words). Examples included the original lyrics for "Arabian Knights", as well as the fact that threatening supporting characters like Jafar, the palace guard Razoul, and the shopkeeper had exaggerated middle eastern features while "Good" characters like Jasmine and Aladdin had a more western look.
*As originally written, "Arabian Knights" opened with the song lyric "Oh I come from a land, from a far away place, where the caravan camels roam. Where they'll cut off your ear if they don't like your face, it's *barbaric* -- but hey! It's Home!". This version of the song appeared in initial prints of the film, but after complaints, the song was rerecorded for home video and the lyric was swapped for "Oh I come from a land, from a far away place, where the caravan camels roam. Where it's flat and immense and the heat is intense, it's *barbaric* -- but hey! It's Home!" Although I must say if people who were put off by the offensiveness of the original lyric, the demo for "Arabian Knights" would make their head explode.
Hércules, Aladdin and Mulan, the animated ones, are and always will be, in this exact order, my top 3 Disney Movies.
Special mention to The 3 Caballeros. This one, for me, is the hidden gem and most emotionally attached. Oh, and before you ask, I'm from Spain. I tell this because 3 Caballeros in Spain was a movie introduced here much more later than the original date.
The opening number from *The Three Caballeros* is an absolute masterpiece.

The English one is specially curious, as per the use of some words at the time that nowadays are considered with other significance, like gay, and the lyrics overall. They are extremely expressive and describes the moment with perfection. The Spanish one had to adapt the lyrics to the language, but with all of that, they got a very good song, not so far from the OV.

@@oliverbrownlow5615 for me, the two scenes that make me cry in melancholy are the quinyins de yaya (José carioca song in Bahia) and the ending, where they have a bullfight with a fire bull being Donald both the bull and the maestro at the end.
Even between the original theatrical debut and its release on VHS, Disney redubbed a line in the opening song. It was deemed offensive to middle easterners to portray them as barbaric, bloodthirsty, etc, even though this is set in the third century or something. As for that big disclaimer that's at the beginning now, one Disney executive recently revealed that this is actually the main reason they're remaking the cartoons as live action, to correct what they think are the politically incorrect mistakes of the past.
When they made the animated Little Mermaid, Disney was just an old animation and film studio fallen on hard times. Mermaid's success saved them from collapse. Now that they're the most powerful multimedia corporation in the universe and own everything under the sun, they're embarrassed by their old fairy tale films, which were really meant as old-fashioned type broadway musicals.
Fixing Little Mermaid as live action doesn't seem to be going so well, as it looks like Disney's not going to make back its budget. It's bombing in China and they're blaming racism, but their remake of all-Chinese Mulan bombed in China too. The #1 film in China right now is Across the Spiderverse, featuring Miles Morales. They just don't like the Disney remakes.
Disney has revealed the casting for characters in the live action version of Lilo and Stitch, and Twitter got mad because the Hawaiian actors aren't dark enough. There is also a live action Moana planned, bringing back Dwayne Johnson to play the same part, and they just announced that they're starting to plan a live action Hercules.
The singing voice for Aladdin sang a whole new world in one take and has only ever sang it 3 times ( first when he recorded the song for the movie second the day he got married and the third time was during the 24 year anniversary
We didn't own a lot of movies growing up so I distinctly remember as a kid watching this and Cinderella both on vhs over and over!
It's such a good one and the soundtrack is amazing
The "culture insensitive opening" is for the lines "it's barbaric but hey it's home" in the beginning sequence
And in the the prince Ali song the line 'Sunday salaam' but Arabians celebrate the Sabbath/holy day on Friday so in the live action they switched it to "Friday salaam"
Pretty sure EVERY culture could be considered barbaric if you look far enough into its past

Whoa whoa whoa, we gotta establish something right now, the 3rd Aladdin movie is fantastic, way higher budget and better animation than the second, way better music, Robin Williams back as genie, better than the 2nd in pretty much every way and I don't even dislike the 2nd that bad, though it was clearly very low budget. The 3rd one is worth it for Robin Williams, the music and the supporting characters alone even before all the other stuff.
Yes, Robin sang the songs and practiced a lot for them! From my understanding, Robin and Gilbert also set the stage for future comedians in Disney animation (not sure if that’s actually true but since movies like Lion King and Mulan came out after Aladdin I’m gonna roll with it lol).
Side note, one of my favorite moments in life was getting to meet Jonathan Freeman (voice of Jafar). His fan service is top tier and his everyday talking voice is his Jafar voice (he didn’t go out of his way to have a different voice for this movie). He said being a Disney villain was his career dream! A super talented and super humble man.
Ron Clements and John Musker had made two of my favorite Disney films with my highest regards. Little Mermaid and Aladdin had creativity, colorful characters, and memorable music. They both have two of my favorite Disney villains as well. Aladdin is a standout for both Robin Williams and Frank Welker who voiced Abu and the Cave of Wonders. This came out when I was about 10. My older brother preordered the vhs to buy for me at Blockbuster when it came out as a present!! It was one of the first times I remember preorders happening. This movie will always remind me of my still wonderful big brother.
This was and always will be one of my favorites Robin Williams was the best genie ever and yes he sang his own songs.
what bothers me most about Aladdin is how he complained and whined that he wasn't a real prince and wanted to tell the truth--when he ACTUALLY WAS A PRINCE. He didn't wish to dress like one. He literally did become one. A new land was created, he had an entire parade full of animals and servants, etc. He wished he was a prince so he WAS. A PRINCE. The second half of the movie was so agitating lol
I haven't seen the second movie so idk how bad it is, but in my opinion the 3rd movie (Aladdin and the King of Thieves) is actually pretty decent. I'd need to re-watch and see if it holds up but they got Robin Williams back for that one and i remember it being my favourite of the Disney sequel movies

My personal favorite Disney film in the renaissance era. Songs slap, animation beautiful, and Robin is the GOAT RIP. And my sister loved this movie growing up, her favorite Disney Princess to this day is still Princess Jasmine.

Absolutely love this film! Obviously Robin William's performance is absolutely legendary, and A Whole New World is the greatest Disney song of all time in my opinion.
As far the "negative depictions" warning goes, I remember reading Roger Ebert's review of the film and this is what he said back in 1992.
"One distraction during the film was its odd use of ethnic stereotypes. Most of the Arab characters have exaggerated facial characteristics - hooked noses, glowering brows, thick lips - but Aladdin and the princess look like white American teenagers."
I agree with him that the depictions of were exaggerated, but I don't think it came from a place of ill intentions. I personally think the reason the Arab characters look more exaggerated is because the animators were trying to make Aladdin & Jasmin stand out more from the crowd. Which is something Disney has most definitely done before with other films, like Beauty & The Beast, but that's just my personal take on the matter.🤷♂
agreed, i dont see them exaggerated in a negative way, just to highlight that Aladdin and Jasmine were the diamonds in the rough made for each other.

This movie has a great animated series. If you liked this movie you should check it out. The voice actors were fantastic, even someone who sounds like Robin Williams played the genie. One of my favorite cartoons growing up. Always looked forward to a new episode.
How? I agree that the TV series is FANTASTIC and I love it to bits, but Disney has never officially released the entire thing, not even on Disney+. The copy of it that I have is bootleg from VHS recordings of TV broadcasts.
It's criminal that Disney refuses to recognize that series even exists. Having another 96 episode series on Disney+ would be fantastic for them.
I agree that I loved watching the tv show back when I was a kid. Fun fact, the voice of genie for the tv series also did the voice of genie for the 2nd movie. He is voiced by Dan Castellaneta who most people will recognize as the voice of Homer Simpson.

I have genuinely no idea why there's the sensitivity warning at the start. This movie rocks and is one of the last vestiges of truly classic Disney films.
I was surprised to see that on Aladdin. I understand putting in front of older movies like Peter Pan, but I didn't think Aladdin was criticized all that much. I remember they changed some lines in one song because they were potentially offensive, but they did that many years ago. Probably over 20 years ago.
The original Aladdin is still one of my favorites.

I recommend watching the sequel and the third movie. But fair warning the voice actor in the second movie for the genie is the guy that voices Homer Simpson, not Robin Williams. But he comes back to voice genie in the third movie, which I promise you'll love.

I think the warning is just they made the bad guy have darker skin and more middle eastern features, then they made Aladdin more European looking and lighter. I don't think it's that bad (in comparison to stuff in like Fantasia or Peter Pan).

Jasmine is 15 lol not 12, and during that time and they probably still do in tht culture, they often married their teen daughters off. I'm not saying it's right, but I wish people would stop comparing old stuff to today's standards. EDIT: Nothing in the movie is offensive, that's just Gen Z being too sensitive about everything anymore.
Actually I’ve watched all the movies and shows and I don’t think they ever say her age out loud. I’d like to make a video about it one day but it’s a Mandela effect that people remember very strongly Jasmine saying she’s 15 but nobody says that in the movie. It could have been in a tape or trailer or something but yeah it’s never said lol
re: the disclaimer at the beginning
The depiction of Muslim and Middle Eastern people is what got a lot of folks riled, leading to the disclaimer in the beginning of the movie. There's a lyric where the character says Argabah is "barbaric, but hey - it's home." Jasmine only wears a hijab when she's pretending to be a "commoner," there is queer coding in Jafar, and traditionally middle eastern features are missing from the protagonists and saved for the villains and the commoners. Plus Disney didn't use arabic for writing in the film, they're just scribbles. Not to mention the scene where Jasmine is chained up...
