First Bullet Train was built in the 1960s. I've travelled on both Chinese and Japanese systems - but ten years ago. I imagine the Chinese systems have surpassed the Japanese ones by now. And they are so much cheaper to use!

China has done great things - I've travelled all over China and Japan, speak pretty good Japanese, and very basic Mandarin. I know both countries pretty well.

The Chinese have already said they are not counting on the yankee market. There are much easier markets and they are huge markets.
Used to travel around East Asia a lot between 2006 and 2016, and even then, all the talk was of China developing its internal market, and how they would improve the buying power of their working and middle class folk, so they were not so dependent on exports.
Of course, with their new friends in BRICS, they have a couple of billion people happy to buy their products! While us in Europe and the USA (perhaps half a billion) have to pay for over-priced goods because we are too dumb to work out that good trade conditions are mutually beneficial.
China ia already the largest auto market.
China‘s exports to ASEAN countries has already surpassed exports to US.
Trades has heat up between China/ Russia, China/India.
And there are markets in Central Asia, West Asia, Africa and S.America.
China is open up new markets, but US is only worry been defending its own market. 😆 US is lost globally.

Countries which are still under developed will have the latest ev technology ahead of the USA so China is not worried about being blocked from the us market . The rest of the world is a much larger market than America.

If you look at the original Tesla business plan, it has always been to build an expensive model (to underwrite the development cost) and then to figure out how to mass-manufacture a vehicle that is desirable and affordable. So the S and X came first, then the 3 and the Y at half the price, and the next vehicle is going to be a $25K vehicle. Tesla lives in the sociopathic American capitalist model where public company valuation is dependent of growth and profitability.
Remember back in 2017 when the press was talking about Tesla-Killers, those vehicles that the legacy manufacturers would build with their amazing expertise, that would put Tesla out of business?
Today, every Ford Mach E that sells for around $50K costs Ford over $120K! GM is in the same boat, as is Mercedes, VW, BMW, and every other legacy manufacturer. Tesla is the most profitable company in the auto sector globally!
Look at the Cybertruck. It has pioneered a bunch of new technologies: 48-volt electricals, 4-wheel steering, steer by wire, revolutionary heat exchange gear, etc etc (check out Sandy Munro's UA-cam channel) and Tesla now has technology they can figure out how to mass-manufacture this new technology for their new low-cost vehicle.
The legacy auto manufacturers are desperate. They're going to be forced to license everything from factory systems to auto design to wiring systems to software and they'll have no choice but to go to Tesla.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden is trying to screw Tesla, SpaceX, Elon Musk, and help out his Big Business Buddies.
@@robvannNS The supply chain still needs to grow! Cybertruck was their way of introducing 48v parts. No way to start with a mass volume vehicle and grow that ramp without a built up supply chain... Also, Tesla model 3 and Model Y cost less than the average selling price of cars in the USA. Lower cost than a base Corolla TCO 5 years and 10 years... Tesla outsells the cheaper Chinese cars other than the under 10k EVs without safety features... The amount of demand they would get for a cheaper EV means that hey have to be large enough before trying, or it would be useless. Less margins on lower priced car, means that you have to ramp up to higher production numbers before you break even so having size, cash saved up, good relationships with parts suppliers that have to grow along with your ramp is super important...

Trump killed the deals we had that were very favorable to the USA. We got those deals in the 1990s when the USA was a super strong force in the world and Trump just threw that away at a time when USA was much weaker and we got way worse deals... He added 25-30 tariffs on many goods from China. We, would probably have a lot more solar panels in the USA if it were not for the extra 30% added to the cost of the panels... But also, apparently regulations make it tale long and be expensive as well, depending on the locality.
Free trade only exists if the competitors are playing on a level field. If the competitors are subsidized by their government per car then the competition is unfair since it’s a rigged competition. Can’t see why either of these old farts have such a hard time getting their heads around this fact. It looks like all they want is a low price on a poorly constructed cart.
Since they are so upset I say let them have one each and see how happy they are saving the planet after a few months. Sounds like biden dementia is spreading.

Take the time to check out EV fires (The CCP try to keep it under wraps) in China. Dig deep enough, and you will not be wanting a Chinese EV.....
I think it is very impressive how the two Richard’s are able to bounce ideas off one another and distil a lot of very interesting ideas and concepts. It looks easy for them but surely it is a real skill/art to pull off.
I do feel however, that China is totally underestimated by many in the West. As Richard W. has pointed out elsewhere, they have been humiliated by the West for several hundred years at least, and I think we, the West, are still thinking that China and the rest of the non-Western world has the lowest standard in all aspects of life. This is far from the truth now. The West, don’t forget, consists of around 14% of the world's population only - 86% of all people live OUTSIDE the West. I have visited China very recently for work, Guangzhou (Canton) and the areas around it, and honestly I think that the Chinese are at least 50 years ahead of the US if not more in ALL aspects of their lives. There is no comparison. From their amazing infrastructure, to their health system, their education system and intellectual activities, their economic system (you know they have digital currency which is miles ahead of where the US is on this), their art and cultural activities. I think that the only thing the US exports is its military know-how. I’m sorry to be so brutal, but it should be said. I’m not sure whether the US will ever recover - it’s infrastructure is practically too far gone, it’s health and education system totally unaffordable for the majority. There is little culture to speak of - concrete, oil, and survival (no other talk except making money, money, money). I think it is a much more dire situation than the two Richard’s make out.
I am from Taiwan, thus I am Chinese. Recommend to you a good channel by a patriotic US citizen who runs a company in China, importing heavy machinery and equipment of various sorts made in China (tractors, street food court vans and so on) to US buyers -- Inside China Business. He is a very modest and well-mannered gentleman. I was extremely surprised to find out that there are still some people in the US that are intelligent and wise, and void of neocon kind of stupidity and belligerence.
As a Chinese living in the US for over 40 years, I have been watching closely the development of Sino-US relations during these years, I hate to say that my observation so far has been very negative and frustrating mainly due to the stupidity and ideological orientation of the politicians in the US and their immature and childish approach when dealing with China, who usually is the one behaving like a mature adult. I still have the American dream and I believe it could be achieved sooner if without those incompetent and disastrous politicians.

The fact that he does frequent business in China tells me that he is well traveled and able to reach his own at least somewhat informed conclusions. @@888YangJi Many of us don't live in or near the urbs! We also need to move our materials, including a full load of shopping every month. I either drive the smallest car just for me, or a truck for when I have full loads. America is too large and sparsely populated in rural areas for any kind of public transit.

With more tariffs apply on import of Chinese goods, pretty soon those Chinese made agricultural machinery is going to be less competitive in the US as those farmers in the US will have to pay a higher price for those machinery made in US which in term, they have to increase their price on their agricultural products like wheat, corn, barley and so on to the market which means Americans have to pay more for all that.
I know Taiwan makes a lot of tools, and those WILL NOT be affected by the tariffs. They do make good tools at very good prices.

That's no matter, American EV car makers only can sell their products to their own people in America and amongst their G7 in Canada and EU. America will be completely lost in the global market outside its lapdogs countries because unable to compete. Inflation rates hike and American common people wellbeing are getting screwed.
You got it.. but it's actually worse than that. Even traditional US vassals will think twice about imposing the same protectionist policies. Australia for example is a die hard US vassal, but it has no such restrictions on Chinese EVs because it doesn't have an automobile manufacturing industry that it needs to protect. Italy, another US ally, is going further to solicit Chinese EV companies to go and build there. So the US will find itself increasingly isolated and its Big 3..well 2, increasingly uncompetitive in the rest of the world.

Elon makes $1 a year from Tesla. The 50B pay package is a theoretical number, based on the stock price that fluctuates like crazy. It also seemed impossible for him to meet the criteria to get that "bonus". His bonus is that he gets to buy Tesla shares at an old price. He would pay about $6b to Tesla for those shares. He cannot sell those shares for 5 years. Tesla gets the cash now, is usable no matter what happens to the share price in five years... At east it is a great deal for Tesla! Tesla does not have to pay the most successful CEO that we have ever seen... Instead they will be up $6b in real cash (losses are only theoretical)...

one of Chinese navigation maps with 20 different car ride service companies showing different costs. 6 miles distance cost about 3 US dollars. Most of cars are EV. Life is much more convenient in China than US ( I have been living in US for 30 years). Delivery services in China ( cities big and small) are 24/7. You can order many many many different things and get them delivered in an hour or less for 3 dollars item. People need to remember, Americans average income is about 5 times more than Chinese, but cost of living in US is much more than that in China in many ways. I had a surgery in Cincinnati, Ohio that cost me over 30k US dollars, and the same surgery in China cost 2k US dollars. When comparing income form different countries, pay attention to the purchasing power.
Taxi and Uber like service is so cheap in China, I recently visited Chengdu and I was so pleased and satisfied with the service. Btw their subway fares costs US$0.5

When America pre-emptively tariff Chinese cars before any Chinese company even showed interest in exporting, America just declared to the world they know with certainly nobody would buy an American car if they can buy a Chinese car.
So not only did the tariff not harm China, its a huge boost to Chinese auto companys' brand image.
It's ashame because US's road infra structures are built mainly for cars this is why effordable EV for American is a must. American regulators are definately loosing their plots.
I got to be honest, I am not crazy about electric cars because those batteries are very expensive. But $20,000 for the car and the batteries last 10 years I think it's worth having, a battery car is much cheaper to operate because it doesn't have an internal combustion engine with a whole lot of expensive problems that comes along with the internal combustion engine
The first batch of pure electric BYD taxi was deployed in Shenzhen in 2011. A lot of them have over 1 million kilometer milage before decommissioned. The battery can still hold up to 85%.

China just launched an electric sedan(IM L6) with a 130kwh semi-solid state battery and 600miles real world range. 0-60mph in less than 3 sec and top speed at 308km/h (191ph) Currently tops the chart in the world on Moose test for production vehicles at 90.65km/hr. Of course it also have autonomous driving on par with the latest version of Tesla FSD.
and its battery is chemically NON-flamable. all for 35,000usd.
Not only Chinese ev tech is superior it is also cheaper, simply because economies of scale and mature supply chains. The EV race is already over, and China has won. Anyone who don't think so is just in denial of reality.

Short term protectionism is OK. It gives an industry time to catch up to foreign competition. The problem is companies want the protectionism to continue.
That’s when industries are in their infancy and the American industries are certainly not in their infancy anymore .

US can produce a sub $ 20,000 electric car, but that not where the money is.
Doubtful.. the biggest cost in an EV is the battery and most US battery tech is dependent on Nickel which are way more expensive than the LFP used in Chinese EVs, and 90% of those are made in China which the US has now blocked. US vassals like Japan and SK are way behind the Chinese in LFP manufacturing. Until such times when the US can manufacture or source LFP batteries cost effectively. They will not be able to reach that level of cost in their EVs
Considering the quality of $100k Cybertruck, do you really want to think about what kind of quality an American $20k EV would have?
Very interesting discussion. You both mentioned Hungary a couple of times, I live there but worked for US companies for a long time and spent time there a lot, so I might have a little view. I still admire the openness in discussions and democracy you have and as I see both of this countries is going downhill in governmental duties, in many fields like healthcare, education e,tc.
Hungary follows the US "suburb" ideas which is a dead end for the society. Mobility is a key issue. Car is not a solution in any kind, and a plain sleeping quarter neighborhood is just not the way how society should develop. It's rather a disintegration, not even starting to discuss the environmental cost of those settlements.
We (our companies) educated China technically, my US companies had factories in Shenzen, Zhuhai, e,tc, shutting down manufacturing in Salinas CA, Rochester NY etc. We educated them on how to be good and efficient and they just overgrown us, while we were laughing about the copies of the products they made of our products than doing better ones.
China built a 42000km high-speed railway in the past 15 years, Europe barely has 11000, US has 80km ! of high-speed railway. The leap that China did in the past 20 years is mind-boggling, and we are just awakening that it's too late...
the USA has a tariff on Trucks and Pick up trucks from other countries. but look how Manufacturers have responded they raise the prices to astronomical levels, and while japanese brands are expensive too they are far cheaper than the american brands, why do Pick up Trucks need tariffs THEY DONT

Greetings from Spain. We already have car sharing in many forms here. In Madrid it's great. If your travelling with more then two people, it's cheaper to get around the city with a e-city car. Just find the closes one to you that is available and , leave it where ever you get out, no special place. Some services and rates that are only for Spanish residents and it's cheaper for students and the elderly. And it's cheaper in many cases to rent or leases a new car over buying one.
The problem with public transportation is the complete lack of convenience. A lot of people (especially the elderly) who are, in one way or another, disabled don’t live near a bus stop and can’t afford to move.

The thing with tariffs is they're useful if you want to build industry, but if your domestic automakers rely on foreign companies and you slap their country with tariffs you're screwing up your automakers too. Refining of lithium/cobalt/graphite etc is mostly done in China, and the batteries are mostly produced there. It is honestly amazing how China kickstarted their EV industry with 40 billion $ which for size of an economy like China is a bargain. The 100% tariff immediately make s me think that Ford, GM, and even Tesla will be protected as long as they are charging us just less than twice what the cars are worse. Meanwhile, they will become progressively unable to export American cars. Why can't we just do that same thing China did when our companies came there - allow them to build factories here as long as the cars are made here and factories are 51/49 percent locally owned? Just like with Western automaker skills slowly being absorbed by local technicians, we will have jobs and the knowledge will slowly cement itself here.

Regarding cars, i hope to see full self driving evs. Llse Use phone call a car. The car comes to me to pickup. Dont have to take public transport to a garage.
This is a little too, "You will own nothing and be happy," for my taste. Kind of like, over inflate the price of everything and make people lease or rent to get to work, go shopping or just spontaneously go for a drive.
Also, one reason people have their own bicycles is because one size does not fit all.
Hard to imagine Americans will go for it. I will take the Chinese EV over being forced to take public transportation everywhere (though it's nice to have the option in certain situations). If I lived in a large city, that would be a different story, but I would hate living in a large city.
You also don't want car ownership as the only viable option, creating traffic is another way of reducing freemdom and the benefit of ownership for everyone.
Gonna have more fair options, public transport in big city is a start, and don't believe the fear mongering that public transport will outright your ownership of car, it rarely does, unless you are in a super crowded city like Beijing.
Oh, and in smaller city and rural area in China, ownership of car ia really common place.

Americans are used to having that independence and the only reason to not have it, now, is extreme cost due to price gouging or taxes, which is not a good reason, but this seems to be what he is saying, that people will not be able to afford cars here and will have to get used to it.

I am one of the people who will have a hard time affording a car if used car prices don't come down and I certainly won't be able to afford an electric one, so it worries me. I'm partial to Hondas, myself.

There are many discussions from the economic (financial) and political (governmential) perspectives for pros and cons about China and the US, and about ICE cars and EVs, on this and other channels.
There is one aspect that is rarely discussed. For the lack of a better word, I call it "culture." Despite the somewhat westernization of the Chinese people with individual wants, they are still a homogeneous people who listen to their government and act as a whole. Americans are just too individualistic, and rebellious, to toe the party line.

Back down to earth, I have a 2015 Honda Coupe with a manual transmission and about 60k miles. I don't drive much. Carfax sends me estimated trade in value periodically. In 2021/22 pandemic times, the value was $12k-15k. I even got calls from the dealerships for me to sell them my car. I was tempted as I don't need to drive. April 2024, the value was $5k-$7k. No calls from the dealerships.
I think the free market despite having some stupid constraints has caused the price fluctuations. That's the American way.

I almost always had sticks, but started with automatics. My parents always had automatics so I learned on those and when I was a student I drove their cast offs. Couldn't wait until I could get a manual.
I started with a little red Geo hatch, one year old, great deal. Sold it way too soon. The only car I ever bought new was in '95. A little red Civic with the split hatch (No air conditioning to save money, lol--which I could never tolerate today.) Loved that car. Drove it until the body rusted out. Then I had a used '97 Civic, bright yellow, which someone painted. Rusted too, but I was able to sell it to a young guy who wanted to fix the body. After that I found good cars that happened to be automatics--A '95 Toyota Corolla. The only car that rusted so completely I had to bring it to a salvage yard. The engine was still perfect. Then briefly I had a Honda Accord 10th Anniv edition. Came from Cali, so no rust at all and I sold it to an ecstatic young man from NYC who had been looking for an un-rusted one for year.
Now I have a 2007 Toyota Camry that was my mom's who no longer drives (back to the parent car, lol.) Not what I would have picked, but it is a good car and fancier than I have ever owned and only had 60,000 mi on at the time. But, it won't last forever.
Not sure what I will do after this. I am a musician and sometimes have to drive between states late at night with my instrument and equipment. I also do some housecleaning --also a decent amount of driving with equipment. Don't have a lot of money, especially now, so I have been concerned about how I will manage.
Not sure how I feel about EV's. I am not that into all the technology in general and it seems to make repairs a lot more costly. Of course, the world obviously can't handle all the emissions either. I guess I am like the people on the forums you check in with, betwixt and between and worried options may be disappearing.
In 10 years time, US will be the only country with least EV on the road, and not reducing their Carbon emession.
Hence, its time for US to Carbon Tax to rest of the world. 😁

The Chinese have been leading the way in anything electric for a long time. They make good stuff and affordable. Consumers lose here and like you pointed out, so much for the EV transition here.

This of course doesn't happen in a vacuum. So China now is selling US treasury bonds. Making it more difficult to sell more, so sell the interest rate must be higher. Causing more inflation. So instead of cheap EVs, everything gets more expensive.
If you are able go and live where they sell cheap cars, tarrifs are the opposite of freedom of choice. I can't see it ending well, disengaging from progress & innovation has rarely done any country any good
I'm not buying a Chinese EV, given the numerous reports of reliability issues from that country. In fact, BYD EV's are piling up in European ports for this very reason. This is why I have concerns about BYD Dolphin Mini EV's exported to South America, because if reliability issues crop up there, that could be a huge issue.

I don't know about the USA but here in the UK, Chinese cars have very little import duty, yet a $12,000 Chinese car sells for about $36,000.
Many are more expensive than Tesla's, and nobody is buying them, they are piling up at docks and storage area's all over Europe, who on earth would buy a car off an unknown manufacturer that could be gone a few months after purchase.
