Since when America made cars for the world market. They are fuel guzzles and with high CCs, the owner have to pay high road tax.. US cars are not selling to the world.
@@whatnow9653 ?????? Any Super cars come with high insurance. Go look at BYD $15k cars and $25k Tesla model 2. The insurance will be very cheap. If you didn't know, insurance rates are decided on the valve and safety of the car.
I live in China and the first few times I saw this thing last year I was very impressed. It is very cool looking in person and for only $11,000 it is such a great deal. The US auto makers better wake up quick because this vehicle and others like it are going to destroy them if they don't.
There's no way they can compete with the cost base they have, especially after the record UAW contracts that will have an average worker making 6 figures by the end of the contract. So they'll give up entry and mid size cars and be forced to compete in the luxury and truck market. I'm sure they'll hang on to the truck market for a little while, but it'll be hard for more and more people to resist something that costs 1/3 of what they would otherwise pay.
@@eray9934 This car is definitely NOT for the US market. It will sell very well in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and South America. No UAW there. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
I will reiterate, Chinese pricing is not comparable. GM Renault and other Chinese companies have cheaper EVs. Renault's budget EV sells under the Dacia brand in France for €20k, but the Chinese price is $8800, much cheaper than this BYD. GMs Wuling venture had the comparable Bingo, which also doubles in price when exported. The same thing happens to BYD models. The slightly bigger Dolphin jumps from $14k in China to $28k in Europe, and at that price is not much cheaper than a much bigger made in Mexico Chevy Equinox EV. For other OEMs, this car is already "been there done that".
Americans don't want cheap tiny cars. We already have/had them. They don't sell. Americans want big SUVs with all the blings. This is not my personal approval or disapproval. It's just a fact. Cars are very much a status symbol in this country. That's the culture. I can see cars like this being opular abroad though, where the culture's different.
I have a BYD Atto 3 Extended range, for 9 months now. It is the best car I have owned. The attention to detail, safe LFP Blade Battery, stylish and comfortable interior, and 5 Star ANCAP (European) rating were deal breakers for me. Also being able to open the door and just sit down, instead of climbing down into, or up into is also just right for me. Convenient OTA updates, 12.5" rotatable centre display Android tablet, and another driver display above the steering wheel (which adjusts with steering height). It is a great EV, very well made and a comfortable ride. Great value for the price. Cheers from Australia.
Likewise mate. I have had an Atto 3 for the last 18 months: will never go back to ICE cars again. My son just got BYD SEAL a couple months ago, and he absolutely loves it.

OMG. Finally i can find some honest review about something from China. Thank you for staying true to cars without politics. I hope I can get it in Canada one day.
The automobile industry is a national industry. Of course, it is related to politics and has an impact on the country. That is why countries with developed automobile industries either do not import cars from China or impose tariffs on them because of the impact they will have on their countries. From the point of view of the general consumer, they are cheap. Even if it is good, balance is important in the existing car market. If low-priced cars from China do not come in, that will be the reason I mentioned.
My Tesla MY SR has a BYD blade battery (made in Germany Y SR only have the BYD instead of the CATL). The best battery so far in a Tesla. Charges so good it replaces the need for the more expensive long range model
Perhaps, but it could also serve as the kick-in-the-pants the US auto industry needs. Don't underestimate China, but also don't underestimate the USA. It is protectionism that has made the US industry so uncompetitive.
Looks at sales of compact hatches in the U.S. and. 😂🤚 also outside of China these evs are 50-100%+ vs Chinese prices. Also genius whose gonna sell it, service it etc? This makes my 14k when new 2018 fiesta se pos daily beater look like a premium car by direct comparison. 😀

@@4literv6 Fiesta is very poorly built, a BYD isn't. They're at vastly different levels and Ford is at least a decade behind BYD in EVs. Nobody is going to service it or sell it because it's not coming to the USA. Learn about the industry, start by watching Stella Li's interview with Yahoo. You've clearly never worked in the auto sector.
What a pity Americans will never get the opportunity to own a BYD EV unless they open a manufacturing plant in Mexico, perhaps then, BYD passenger vehicles can be sold in the USA so Americans have more choice. Byd build incredible quality Evs, I own a BYD Atto 3 extended range and I'm waiting to take delivery soon of my BYD Seal Performance AWD model sedan. I guess with no vehicle manufacturers in Australia anymore, we dont have an industry to protect, so this allows greater choice and pricing for consumers. As soon as I was aware Warren Buffett invested in BYD several years ago, I knew BYD made quality vehicles at a very competitive price and are going to be a major player on the global stage
I just drove a Dolphin. Impressed at what they’ve been able to achieve, And it even has some neat features my Tesla doesn’t have. If you were considering Japanese car, you’d be happy with a BYD.
BYD has an excellent opportunity to build a quality product at a fair price. At least in the Us I don’t think they will enter that market. Most likely the 30 to 50k range. They won’t be competitive with Tesla or Hyundai at that price point.
Looks like a baby Lamborghini. That's smart of BYD. Lead designer is Wolfgang Egger who formerly designed for Lamborghini, Alfa and Audi. With 74 hp and $11,500 and you can still have some style. The splitter shows he has a sense of humor. My 69 VW Beetle only had 57 hp and was the same size. It took me everywhere and hauled everything with a folding rear seat. My generation was fortunate that the USA wasn't protectionist back then. I would love one of these, but I doubt they will be allowed to enter the USA. Politicians will tell you the cars are spying, but they willingly carry a Chinese made phone. Reverse engineering, like it's some UFO, isn't going to help our manufacturers produce anything equal anywhere near the same price unless they build it in Mexico. If American corporations keep doing that Mexico may soon have to build the wall to keep Americans from taking their jobs. Just kidding. 100% automation and no jobs is the ultimate goal and coming soon. Tesla calls it the machine that builds the machine, and every manufacturer wants it for every kind of product.
The US car manufacturers have failed in every market outside North America. They have forgotten to compete, and rather rely on govt help to sell their vehicles.
Instead of a car company that started making battery-powered cars, BYD was a world-leading battery manufacturer first and THEN moved into the automobile industry, so they definitely know how to make batteries cheap (by far the most expensive part of an EV) and have the scale needed to keep costs down. I'm glad that BYD is now licensing their process to other companies here in the US!
The BYD blade battery is a fire hazard, and not repairable. The secret sauce is BEWARE That's why it's so cheap. Made in China vehicles represent unreliable, hazardous, cheap, and not worth it unless it's a disposable product.
Spot on! We’ve been making cars for well over 100 years. That isn’t the hard part. EVs are computerized batteries on wheels. And, I’ve got a bunch of solar panels on my house. But I don’t own an oil or hydrogen refinery. With an EV, I will only very rarely have to actually buy electricity.

My dad brought a seagull, and its fun to drive on city roads, although its suspension is not so good, but in general it's very agile and very easy to drive. I drive an old Audi A6L, which still a better choice on high way. But in city these small EV are very cheap(electricity cost is one 1/5 the gas cost, although insurance free is higher) to run and easy to park and comfortable to drive.
Yesterday I was watching another UA-cam. A cashier said she cannot afford a BYD so she bought another cheap brand EV which cost her $4,700. She said most colleagues have bought this model of car. It is cheap so people earning below average can have a NEW car. No wonder most Chinese love communist party and are willingly giving up their freedom and democracy for the convenience of living. Most Chinese have house/apartment and car even their average GDP is only 1/5 of Americans.
I'm impressed that it does not have those stupid huge rims. Though that fits with the notion of keeping costs out of it, I just like the idea that a buyer isn't going to have to be roped into another $1000 when it's time to replace the tires. An affordable car to buy, should STAY affordable to use.
Just eyeballing the caliper, you are likely can get away with 175 75/R14. Which was used on 7 gen civic. And tire at that size is cheap! Or you do an upgrade to 205/55 R16 to trade off some milage but having hella more of fun.

All of the UA-camrs for electric cars keep overlooking that fact that the vast majority of American citizens who need a vehicle to do everyday things like going to work at their minimum wage jobs will be forced to keep buying gas cars. BYD is right, the US is against EVs just look how they treat TESLA. If the US really cared about the environment and its peoples health they would make it EVs and Solar more available for the masses (low income citizens). The systems in more than 48 states are set up to abuse it citizens by not only allowing low price EVs to be available for the citizens and they allow the insurance companies to overcharge low income citizen that want a safe and clean vehicle to have to purchase said insurance. So BYD even if allowed would truly have to sell their vehicle at their Chinese prices in order for the average citizen to be able to purchase their vehicle with full coverage insurance. Why can't Detroit build a BYD Seagull and price it for no more than $12,000, Detroit isn't selling anything anyone wants to buy.
BYD made the ‘no-extravagences’ EV, with some useful features, that any worker can use. If it’s durable and repairable - I’ve got 2 sons that need work commute cars ….
The scary thing about BYD is that while they were launching and building the Seagull, which costs like 11k USD in China, they were ALSO launching and building their flagship vehicle, the Yangwang U8, which is a massive luxury SUV with quad motor which can do tank turns and can is literally rated to float and drive across bodies of water for up to 30 minutes, and costs over 150k USD. Oh and BYD also launched about 5 more models in between the Seagull and U8, and has even more products in the pipeline, including a supercar and an electric pickup. BYD's engineering and production capabilities are no joke, and major western automakers are no doubt very worried about going up head to head with them now that BYD is really starting to export out of China in earnest.
@@tren133 And, looking in from the outside, we ask - How’d they do that? Or How many corners did they cut? Or what’s next? I agree, this is a call to MUST LEARN and MUST DO.
North American vehicles are assembled from parts purchased from outside manufacturers. BYD builds their own parts and the price reflects this.Fords Rouge plant used to make their own steel and glass, not anymore. This is a great ,inexpensive useful smaller car. They could sell huge numbers of these.
Ford's "Rouge" plant. In Dearborn. But yeah, the Big 3 used to be very vertically integrated as well, and that of course has many benefits. But when the imports came, they could not compete, with their 1.5 million well paid UAW workers. So they began the outsourcing to suppliers which paid their workers a lot less. But they're already down to basically final assembly now, so I don't see how much more they can cut. It seems they were trying to keep battery manufacturing out of the UAW but that appears to have been one of the concessions during the recent strike.
You have to wonder, how can all that vertical integration transfer from China to Mexico? How much of the content can be sourced from China before the tariff applies? Will they have to build the batteries and most of the parts in Mexico?
What Autoline should dissemble next should be the Seagull's archenemy in China, the Wuling Bingo. Which is a car we may actually have a chance seeing this side of the pond, thanks to the GM tie.
“Building your own parts” doesn’t necessarily mean cheaper or better lol. You realise people are paid millions to make this decisions and calculate what is worth it? You think you can tell after 10s of thought?😀

It's vertically integrated that's why it's cheap
Assuming that it can get here. It's a great car, but I suspect legacy American automakers will be screaming from the rooftops for Washington to do something to prevent China from being able to sell this car here, at least at that price. The next few years will be interesting.

On the other end of the spectrum, I would love to see Caresoft and Autoline do a little review of the Li Auto Mega. It's a new MPV with so much content, it is off the charts. It has about 550 HP, is quieter than a Maybach S series, urban self driving ability that seems to work, has full Dolby Vision immersive cinema in the rear seats, air ride, and just about every bell and whistle you could possibly name. And the biggest trick of all: It has huge range , and can charge from 10% to 80% in under 11 minutes! And I'm not just reading off the press release. So many parallels here to the 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV I've been driving for the past 8 years, which will hopefully last me long enough until small, unpretentious Chinese EVs like this one will be generally available here. Thank you for spotlighting this, Autoline and Caresoft. The only thing I wished we could have seen was the amount of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. Do they fold completely flat, like in the i-MiEV, or the Honda FIT that's also in our driveway? But I'm glad we got to see the rear spoiler with nearly horizontal rear window underneath. The Audi A2 did something similar here: another car that didn't need a rear wiper because of thoughtful aerodynamics. In addition to saving manufacturing costs on no wiper, there isn't a need for a rear view camera. KISS stuff still works. The Japanese have seemed to completely given up on making cars like this for the US market, even though they were really good at it. The Europeans could do it, but didn't want to be pigeonholed into being known for coming off as less than luxurious while still being perceived as too small. The US auto makers? Proverbial tail fins, land yachts and pickups, mostly. The Bolt EV, to be fair, hints at this sort of urban utility, but is still medium sized car that their marketing people only want to make larger (ie: EUV, Equinox EV, etc.) This one will be more than $11.5K when it finally hits here, but probably not by that much. If BYD can find a way to make them in Mexico to NHTSA crash specs and sell them to Yankees for around $18K a pop, millions of these will be on the roads here. I hope they pull it off. We need affordable EVs like this for the masses and for being able to fit into tight spots in big cities.
The only minus on the BYD Seagull is interior/cargo room. Not too much room behind the rear seat, and the rear seat cannot be split folded. The similarly priced Wuling Bingo EV, the Seagull's main competitor, does much better in this area, and its cargo space is almost twice as big as the Seagull. However the Seagull still sells better because its platform, drivetrain, battery etc are more advanced compared to the Wuling. Wuling is very good at building cheap cars, but no one is even close to BYD's vertical integration and ability to control costs. These cheap Chinese EVs are going to be a serious problem for all major global carmakers very shortly.
Rear cargo room is small, but if I want cargo, then no 4 people, most of the time it's just 1 or 2 people and cargo space. Or if one's really in a pinch, put some cargo in the rear seats between the passengers. I can't wait until these are available in the U.S. Or at least other automakers learning from BYD and offering something similar.
The 1st gen Bolt was basically a Korean designed and built powertrain, battery, chassis, GM designed the interior and console, seats. Everyone hated the seats. It still costed $27k MSRP, looked like econobox.
I had a 1985 Dodge Colt with 68 hp. It had 0 options on it. No air, manual transmission, manual windows, two doors. I think it cost me around $6,000. I had to drive about 700 miles a week. It ran on very little gas, maybe 50 miles per gallon if I recall. This Seagull seems to be the Colt of the 2020s except it actually has some nice options.
Comparing with Nissan Leaf, this car has the same size, more functions, more mileages, but the price is half of it. Nissan Leaf starting price is 28k USD

If BYD bring this car to the UK in right-hand drive (and yes, preferably with better wipers front & rear) & sell it for reason money, I'm DEFINITELY getting one.
If they have designed the aerodynamics correctly it shouldn't really need a rear wiper, would wait and see how it looks like in testing. You can see how the roof is almost like a giant hat above the windshield.
I'm 63 and have owned hundreds of cars in my time included 5 V6 capris, a Ventora, Firenza & now in an 8th gen diesel civic. Never once have I needed a rear wiper. The ones on my Capri's never got used either. Try using your wing mirrors like you are supposed to be doing.
I sat in a BYD Seagull last week. Incredibly comfortable and nicely styled. Even if the Americans can reverse engineer this thing, they'll never be able to make it affordable. Plus the American car quality is always in doubt. Now Boeing really scares me.😮
As an automotive enthusiast, I follow Autoline’s posts. And here’s why I believe American automakers should (and probably are) very worried about Chinese manufacturers: Remember the USMCA, the trade agreement, specifies the local content cars need to have to be considered for reduced import tariffs. Over the last 4 years, no less than 26 BRANDS of Chinese companies have started operations in Mexico. Lots of them, including BYD, have pledged to build plants here. The next step is obvious, isn’t it?
We all know this already. And the big 3 do too. That's why they have so lobbying group trying to get the government to exclude Chinese car companies from the usmca
Meanwhile US auto manufacturers have been selling cars in China for 30 years and make 30-40% of their profits in China. GM was only profitable post recession because of China. The classic, racist notion of you gotta buy my stuff but I refuse to buy yours. Not to mention Ford China currently exports cars.

And the visions they create are many times never accomplished. So many really awesome concept cars and the execution is bland and nothing close. I think the vertical integration is the key to the much lower cost. The OEMs just need to adopt that model more. If Caresoft was able to get a Seagull into the country, it a guarantee GM, Ford & Stellantis have gotten a few to teardown and benchmark already.
Vertical integration with over 90,000 engineers in R&D alone. More engineers than Ford, GM and Tesla combined. You need a lot of engineering power to be truly successful with vertical integration when rapidly implementing technological innovation... Meanwhile, Ford is trying to cut its engineer count.
@@hwirtwirt4500 Tesla has a small fraction of the engineering headcount, but knows how to get a lot of hype from engaging with partners like IDRA. If you know what you are looking at, BYD isn't doing anything overly flashy for hype. Just a lot of solid engineering.

@413 That's based on China's test standard. That's about 160 miles in the EPA test standard. Tesla aims to match a Civic type of EV. One that will appeal to a vast number in the USA. Not a niche market like city driving only type of appeal.
This is a great example of what other companies should be making. Simplicity and quality. Forget all the autonomous driving BS, ditch the connected services nonsense, just make simple cars that are built to a decent standard.
There should be an option for lower content vehicles but not every one. Trucks in particular, a basic reliable work truck with a minimum of features. Just what you need.
You could probably put Comma 3 and OpenPilot on this if you wanted a computer to take control in traffic. It's all aftermarket, affordable, and Id say less scary than Teslas FSD.
This is a real 'retro' vehicle.....retro in the sense that it is a return to affordable, economical, comfortable basic TRANSPORTATION. This is not meant to be a status symbol but a practical 'tool'. Being a 'new' car it should also be more reliable than a used car for the same money. We need MORE of this type vehicle.

No politicians say anything about a low cost affordable high quality safe and functional car for everyday transportation. Because affordable transportation for its citizens is a national security.
Looks like the ideal inexpensive 2nd car for a household, but the IIHS has been on a mission to scare people away from small cars for decades. Look at how they treated the Smart ForTwo.
Totally agree about IIHS pushing people out of small cars. Every single one of their videos about small cars over the last couple of decades ends with "but here are bigger hybrid alternatives that don't sacrifice safety like *insert name of gas only subcompact*" even though the small car scored really well. My small car's lower mass and hence, shorter braking distance, has prevented several accidents. Funny thing is this "second car" of ours gets used way more often than our "first car". The first one just gets fired up for long trips.
When people have no money anymore these cars are going to be the only game in town. China has come a long way from those trucks that folded up like an accordion when it hit something. They've learned from the best and it shows. The west would be absolutely pants on head stupid to ignore this. This is a MAJOR threat and it looks like China is going to mop the floor with domestic auto makers if this is any indicator.
The IIHS speaks on behalf of the insurance industry and they believe pushing drivers into an arms race (Bigger and larger vehicles) most benefits insurance companies.
Just what Ive been saying all along...A glorified golf cart for local errands as a second car that can be charged at home....No mandates, just let the byers of a second car think about it. Maybe take 5 - 10% of ICE off the roads. But they made awful EV f150, Mustang, Charger....stupidity knows no bounds.
I mean this in the best possible way, but it's great having a couple of old dudes doing the video. You're going to ask the right questions and not buy into any bull-dust. Personally, I hope there's a BYD subsidiary that will use this as a shared platform and make something that _is_ cheap and nasty, and _does_ have lots of hard nasty grey plastics, and does have rear drums, and boring headlights made by the cheapest bidder. If they could knock another grand or two off the price off BYD's design by making a car that is more brutally utilitarian , that would be cool for the absolute bottom end of the market (as long as the original BYD Seagull stays nice like the way it is!).
I bought a BYD Yuan Plus in Mexico last year. Traditional carmakers offerings were all at least 50% more expensive. This version of the seagull sells for around $20k in Mexico. Expect a similar price in the US, unless the American government is desperate to protect its uncompetitive SUV makers.
Puedes dar un Review sincero? Se que no es el mismo modelo pero estoy interesado en comprar el dolphin mini (seagull) y quería saber si de verdad será buena compra. Gracias!!
I would be curious how much this would be if it were made by BYD in Mexico and passed all of NHTSA's safety standards. Could this be the $25K EV that BYD is bringing to the US via Mexico??????
The Republicans will never allow it and the Democrats will bend to the trade unions to stop it. China already has a company in the US -- Volvo EVs, and the Polestar brand under it. That more than matches the lone American or European manufacturer in China not part of a forced joint venture -- Tesla. So the US will use China's own rules to match that by allowing only one Chinese company, Volvo cars, as the one company NOT part of a joint venture.

It's smart to have entry level cars like this in a lineup. It gets people into the brand, and if the quality is good, it keeps them when people are ready to upgrade to a more expensive model. Develops brand loyalty.
These are the type of cars you would want to own if you do lots of city driving or shorter distances, cheap and cheerful.
I would love to have one of these as a second car, just charge it once a month and use mainly for city and short trips.

I can't Thank this Channel enough for showing the OEM's what is Truly Needed for the Masses.
Great point :)
The Bolt EV, to be fair, hints at this sort of urban utility, but is still medium sized car that their marketing people only want to make larger (ie: EUV, Equinox EV, etc.)
This one will be more than $11.5K when it finally hits here, but probably not by that much.
How many times do you see more than one person, the driver, in a big pick-up truck? Just insane.
Yep and the Detroit 3 could have done it but they got greedy and Henry Ford will only be a mention in history books by 2050.
It's sporty, has a flat bottom steering wheel! I would definitely buy it as a commuter.

As an automotive enthusiast, I follow Autoline’s posts. And here’s why I believe American automakers should (and probably are) very worried about Chinese manufacturers:
Remember the USMCA, the trade agreement, specifies the local content cars need to have to be considered for reduced import tariffs.
UAW wants the trade agreement revised. I guess Tesla can forget about the Chinese market.

@leguy Both are old-Detroit - likely still harboring some ill-will on Tesla. However, the OEMs have always been run by lawyers and bean counters and not visionaries. And the visions they create are many times never accomplished. So many really awesome concept cars and the execution is bland and nothing close. Tesla is like the team of engineers you know are smart working for the OEM - but who are unable to get their vision done because of upper management (Mary, Mark and friends). Ford impressed somewhat with their Lightning and Mach-e attempts. Last real impressive thing GM did was the Volt. Bolt was outsourced to Korea.

Not sure if anybody's mentioned this, but the $11,500 MSRP is, adjusted for inflation, identical in cost to the Yugo at $3990 when it was introduced back in 1987. The BYD looks way better than the Origami Dumpster Cyber Truck.
I think the vertical integration is the key to the much lower cost. The OEMs just need to adopt that model more. If Caresoft was able to get a Seagull into the country, it a guarantee GM, Ford & Stellantis have gotten a few to teardown and benchmark already.
yes
Vertical integration usually ends up costing more.
Vertical integration is bad!

No politicians say anything about a low cost affordable high quality safe and functional car for everyday transportation. Because affordable transportation for its citizens is a national security.
And the reality is for the money, most would be happier with this , than all the angst of buying a car for $50,000
Looks like the ideal inexpensive 2nd car for a household, but the IIHS has been on a mission to scare people away from small cars for decades.
Also, remember, Americans are large... driving while rubbing is not appealing
One has to wonder, what are links between IIHS and automakers, who clearly prefer to sell high margin SUVs and pickups?
The IIHS speaks on behalf of the insurance industry and they believe pushing drivers into an arms race (Bigger and larger vehicles) most benefits insurance companies.
Just what Ive been saying all along...A glorified golf cart for local errands as a second car that can be charged at home....No mandates, just let the byers of a second car think about it. Maybe take 5 - 10% of ICE off the roads. But they made awful EV f150, Mustang, Charger....stupidity knows no bounds.
