What's cheaper in the REAL WORLD? An EV or a 30 year old PETROL (turbo automatic!)

  • I met up with Lee aka The MacMaster for some lunch, which meant using the public charging network. You won't believe the maths of this one...! What's cheaper, a 1994 Volvo 850 T5 Turbo Saloon or a 2020 Porsche Taycan 'Save The Planet' Electric Battery Vehicle?
You'd think the Taycan should run on nothing but cow farts and windmills, so it would cost 50p to fill the tank and wipe the floor with the old Volvo eh? Well, not so much.

I just scrapped my car, it was a 2006 with 93,000 miles. It had a heater matrix failure (dashboard out job) and the sub frame was rusted badly. Not easy to keep cars for 20-30 years on UK roads.

In December I was forced into taking my old car off the road. The rot had become structural, so would have been expensive. Add in electrical ground and other mechanical systems that were nearing end of life and it just was not viable. It had been my mother's last car. She was 60 when she bought it and had put 200,000 miles on it in 25½ years. I drove it another 8½ years and added another 200,000. The automatic gearbox was original. 35-37mpg on the highway was not too bad for a 1990 Volvo 240DL estate with a bit over 400,000 miles.

ICEs are doing a huge amount of damage to the environment and as the realisation sinks in they will be taked at an extremely high rate. Those noisy fans Lee and Geoff are the fans that cools the liquid coolant around your traction battery pack keeping the pack cool otherwise the battery pack would be compromised and thermal runaway can start so these fans are extremely important. I believe there is also an inverter fan if your charging via A/C as the inverter onboard your car converts the A/C from the public charger to a DC which is used to charge the traction battery pack so it could be that fan as well.

The cost per mile is entirely dependent on the cost of fuel and electric.
People must remember that the combustion engine has had decades and decades of refinement and billions of pounds/dollars/Euros throne at it, even the technology in fuel has drastically improved over time with refining. The original model T Ford had about 250 mile range, which by modern standards isn’t that bad! But that car is over a century old!
Electric cars have only started real development in the last 20 years or so. And already we are seeing batteries from Germany and China with realistic ranges of 1000 miles within reach. You’ll see these on the roads within the next decade.
In terms of price of electric, it’ll be anyone’s guess to what it’ll be going forwards. The war in Ukraine is having a massive impact on electric , along with our odd reliance on buying energy in from other countries. In time it is speculated to decrease as more investment into generation technology improves.

I live in Pennsylvania USA, I work at a CDJR dealership so I follow the EV craze closely as I'm involved. My research is this, a comparable ICE car will cost less to refuel "in the wild" than an EV, if you charge your EV at home it's about the same. If you factor in the extra cost for the charger, plus the extra you pay for insurance, an ICE car is less expensive to run...total cost ICE wins every time.

Your research is either flawed, or US electricity costs are way higher than the UK. A UK EV charged at home will always be cheaper to run than an ICE car (assuming average mileage) even adding in the additional insurance/charger costs. Obviously there’ll be edge cases where the charger cost alone could be more than ICE costs, if for example only driving hundreds of miles a year. For my average of 9000 miles a year, an EV is less than 50% of the cost of running a diesel over the time I usually keep a car (8 years). Just taking into account fuel costs, my normal annual diesel cost will pay for 8 years of charging an EV at home.

Add on the fact that chargers are now mandated to have controlling software in them to address maximum grid demand and do you really think they didn’t add in additional code or that the charger can’t be updated to factor that in?

Hi Geoff, enjoyed the video. Just done quick calculation on cost per mile for my car (5yr old 2.0l petrol, manual, non-turbo, large saloon) over 525 miles is 16.05 pence per mile against Lee's 28.1 pence per mile on that charger.
As for charging EVs at home, I believe some suppliers offer lower overnight tariffs for EV charging (at the moment). One thing that does worry me about EV charging at home is whether the main supply cabling for an estate will be able to cope when all the EV chargers 'power up' overnight. The thought of 200 or so (less 1 'cause I'm never going EV) chargers, on the 1930's estate where I live, suddenly powering up worries me that the mains will not be able to cope.
