The most populated capital of China, duh.
@@sohopedeco well that was not what he said. he just said the most populated capital city.
I just clocked what he means. He meant the most populated Capital city which is also directly controlled by the state council.
he means the core city/city proper. all the other cities mentioned are the city proper + the metrapolitan areas surrounding them. beijing (proper) has 21.7m, mexico city (proper) has 9m, cairo (proper) has 12.5m, tokyo (proper) has 13.5m, delhi (proper) has 11m. therefore making beijing the largest capital city proper.
Yeah just a little🤏 mistake..
A few fun facts about São Paulo, Brazil:
- It has the 5º largest stock market in the world
- It's the largest city in Brazil, but up to the 1950s, some other famous Brazilian cities were larger, such as Rio de Janeiro
- Speaking of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo is actually older than Rio! Rio was founded in 1565, and São Paulo was founded in 1554, just 54 years after the Portuguese explorers arrived. The very first (and oldest) city in Brasil is Porto Seguro, in the state of Bahia
- Not only it has the largest Japanese community outside of Japan, but it is also known for having a large Italian community as well

One of the cool things about Tokyo is that the cityscape basically continues until it just stops and becomes forested mountains or rice paddies / farms. Also, although there is some discrepancy as to whether it deserves the number one spot because their population includes the metropolitan area and not just the city proper itself, I would say it makes sense because you can go from Tokyo, to Kawasaki, to Yokohama all without realizing you have entered different cities. The mass of buildings just doesn't waver.

In Ireland, the threshold for being counted as being a city is 50,000. When that law came in, one of our cities actually lost its city status (Kilkenny), though they are allowed to call themselves a city for historical reasons. But on paper it's a town now.
For some reason, I feel for that city
Why do I get emotional about that?

Fun fact, you counted "Ecatepec de Morelos" twice. The 20 million figure for Mexico City includes the surrounding "con-urban" municipalities, which includes Ecatepec. Mexico City proper only has about 9 million inhabitants.
This goes to show how hard it is to delineate a city to count its population, Ecatepec is Mexico's most populous municipality outside Mexico City. But Monterrey is usually considered the second most populous "city" after Mexico City, closely followed by Guadalajara. However, these "cities" are divided and administered as separate municipalities.
Guadalajara (capital of a separate State) is so close to CDMX (Ciudad de Mexico) that quite a few sources include their population within CDM's (40% of MX's population live within 50 miles / 80 km. around the CDMX center). Puebla (another large city and State Capital) is just farther to the E / SE.
Monterey, OTOH, is a lot closer to the US border....
@@syxepop Guadalajara is about 550 km away from Mexico City, and there is quite a bit of rural land between them. I've never seen it included in the Greater CDMX by any sources. Puebla is much closer but there is a rather heft set of mountains/volcanoes between CDMX and Puebla so it is also never included.
You're probably thinking of Toluca (capital of the State of Mexico), which is about 80 km west of Mexico City. Toluca is close enough that quite a few folks live in Toluca and work in Santa Fe, a business district in the edge CDMX, which is only 50km from Toluca.
Pachuca (capital of the State of Hidalgo) is also under 100km from Mexico City, and a few folks do live in Pachuca and work in the greater Mexico City area (or just north of it). But it is also generally not included within the co-urban area.
My cousin (who lived in Karachi) went to Tokyo for the first time in some special trip back in 2019. He thought Karachi was but after visiting Tokyo, he said Karachi looked little in comparison and he wasn't kidding. He once said, "Even at the top of Tokyo city's most tallest structures, I could only see the city's skyline at the horizon. The country side even on a sunny day wasn't visible at ALL!"
Karachi is big in terms of size but not population. Tokyo has a lot of population. In fact Tokyo alone holds most of Japanese population.
When you think about it, you realize Sao Paulo is the largest city in TWO hemispheres (Western and Southern). At least I think that's true. Mind-blower, if so.
