Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara reviews a comic where Dr. Doom is in the far future! ...but is it really him?

RUMINATIONS: Another major change for the show! It’s also one that’s been a long time coming. Back when I lived with my parents, the wall had a bit of a texture to it that made it so that it wasn’t ENTIRELY boring to have behind me, but in the end it was still pretty blank. It of course got worse when I moved into the apartment and it was a straight up blank wall. It was fine just starting off - everyone was following the minimalistic Nostalgia Critic approach to reviewing. As time went on, though, and the sets of my fellow reviewers evolved, I couldn’t help but be a little jealous of it. Their shelves or posters or the like not only created unique mythos for their shows (something I discussed in the History of Power Rangers Samurai videos), but just made it much more interesting to look at. In a way it was like a trophy room - showing off their possessions for any who wanted to see.
Now of course that’s not REALLY what it was, but I wanted my show to have that same aesthetic - make it more uniquely MINE. And thus when my aunt asked if I wanted some shelves she was getting rid of, I jumped at the chance. This version of the shelves did not last, of course, since I couldn’t frame the video without still showing wall, so I bought myself another shelf from IKEA. It helped, but you’ll notice in the episodes following that I look closer to the camera as a result of it, since while I have a better time not showing the wall, it’s still zoomed in quite a bit to do so. Eventually, the fifth shelf was added and now videos are framed MUCH better. Really the stuff in these early shelf episodes weren’t meant to reflect the comic I was reviewing, just to show off various storyline-related items or references. 2015 is when I made a much larger conscious effort to have items match the mood of the episode, shifting them almost every time in one way or another.
Another reason Dr. Doom works is that you can shift the focus from straight villainy to running a country, or taking it back over in this case. It's just taking on old epics(like MacBeth which was also about an anti-hero) and redoing them with modern super humans.
Did you just call Macbeth an anti-hero? Like, Shakespeare's Macbeth? The snivelling coward who had his best friends assassinated because he feared them usurping his position as king?
Honestly, if I got to choose, I'd go with Doom being concerned and fair to all of his citizens. It makes for a very interesting dynamic when heroes try to fight against his wanting to rule because he's legitimately amazing at it.
It was eventually retconned that this WAS the case, and the only reason he's so hated is a side-effect of a deal with Mephisto: once a year, Doom is allowed to fight Mephisto to earn his mother's freedom from Hell, but he becomes more and more hated by his subjects every time he loses.
@@2wingo that is an interesting consequence and while I knew about the fight, I never knew that was the cost of his trying. Pretty cool.
2wingo Yup. In fact I’d love to see a “What If” scenario where Doom does rule the world and how peaceful it is
@@NoahDaArk The story Emperor Doom actually touches on the idea of Doom ruling the world and it was canon at the time, overall it's a good avengers story that tackles themes of order vs choice since the method in which Doom has controlled the world was mass mind control.
@@2wingo I thought Doom won that contest and all it cost him was (spoilers!)
his mother's love.
Obviously, he HAS to be the original doom, from our time, because he doesn't have any excess pouches, and his costume isn't totally stupid.
In the year 2099, everyone has had the fashion sense part of their brain removed by street surgeons, so obviously, this is the ORIGINAL Doom.
Then how is his face fixed?
Then how is his face fixed?
Look up Doom 2099 and you will get your answer, Scott.
@@scottbruckner4653 current Doom's face is fixed. Because he's bloody Doom and thus made himself the God-King of all reality.
@@LupineShadowOmega No no, that was taken away by hood on the end of Doom's iron man career. Cause you know, marvel gotta bring back the status quo and all. And of course Doom lacks the scientific and magical knowledge to fix it, or to build a new and improved body altogether and move into it, so he didn't just immediately heal it (yeah, that last part was sarcasm).
Fairy Tale Kingdom? Does that make Dr Doom a Disney princess now?
DOOM WILL BE THE GREATEST SINGER OF ALL TIME!!
I guess since Disney owns Marvel that is oddly possible although maybe making Doom a Disney Villain would be interesting. Perhaps make him a nemesis to Big Hero 6.
@@bryedtan The MCU is already a mess as it is. Stop dragging new licences into it! You'll make ot inaccessible to the normals!
@@Archon3960 how is it a mess?
@@BrendanJSmith Greatly summerized, you cannot get into the MCU without watching several of its movies. The MCU is getting as bloated as Marvel's comics.
I loved Infinity War, but I would've been lost if I wasn't following the MCU for some years.
And with multiple directors each working on several characters and licences, you can get some problematic retcons, like Ultron in Homecoming, Tony's character development during Iron Man 3 getting showed aside in Avengers 2, or Ronan appearing in Captain Marvel.
And this is why I love movies like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 more. Their story is self-contained and doesn't require you to get into several volumes of lore or story to enjoy it.
Linkara: guys with a fishbowl on there head
Me: Mysterio 2099?
Duuuude! This episode was TOTALLY Sewing Machine!
+tom riddle Is that good?
+Malcom Chase yes it's kleenex
It's totally Kleenex
Years later and I still think it is only morse coding.
DAMN, that scene where he proclaims that he is Doom is one of the coolest scenes I ever witnessed in a comic book.
Personally, I think he is the real Doom.
Plus, Doom is one of those evil guys who's still so charismatic, at least in the comics, where he can carry a book as the main character.
15:57
"Calm down friend. Enjoy the ride.
This situation is invariably favorable to using my cunning and guile to steal food."
One thing that I've always thought about Doom is that if the world had to be ruled by a supervillain Doom is who should rule it. If the Beyonder told the heroes of the Marvel universe that the world had to be ruled by a supervillain but they got to choose which one ruled the world the heroes of the marvel universe would choose Doom.
I think my first exposure to a villain-centered comic was the Sonic Universe story line "Scrambled" where in Dr. Eggman had to deal with a recent betrayal within his Empire.
Am I the only one who wants to see fan-art of Reed Richards saving Doctor Doom, holding him in his arms dressed up as a prince?
Vilmundur Gunnarsson I get the feeling if you look hard enough you'll find that. It's the Internet for Doom's sake.
Yes, yes you are
Sadly no such art exist as far as I can tell.
One of my favourite Atop The Fourth Wall episodes
SEWING MACHINE!
Doctor Doom vs the Doom Patrol!
SEWING MACHINE!
"So much pain, but finally have returned"
"OG CLEAR OUT THE BATHROOM!!"
I actually started collecting Doom 2099 because of this review.
Was the series sewing machine?
+Oda Swifteye Totally Toaster!
It's not often I have to actually pause one of your videos because I'm laughing too hard to pay attention.
"Sewing machine!" was one of those uncommon moments.
17:28
A new caveat for this will be starring in an awful reboot that was made solely for holding onto the rights of the characters rather than producing a quality piece of cinema.
Ha! I get it!!
"Basically Doctor Doom is like if Avon from Blake's 7 was a super villain."
"Well hooray for us."
6:12.....oooooh let it be a rap freestyle. INCOMING Dr. Doom and MF DOOM battles!!
As for Latveria being a "fairy tale kingdom"... well, Doom is a master of both science and MAGIC.
"DOOM HAS MUCH TO CATCH UP ON! DOES 'FRIENDS' STILL RUN?"
Ahh, the first review to use the shelves behind the futon. I really like the aesthetic it creates =)
+TPrower And with the good looking suit.
Woah, your pony oc reminds me a lot of my own Moonlight Tumble.
3:25
*hears Doom theme*
I see what you did there...
I have to admit, having book shelfs with several trade paper backs, or the like was rather fitting for a comic review show, and I'm shocked that it didn't happen much sooner when he moved. It's a nice addition and provides more than just a blank wall to stare at. I also like how in later reviews, namely some of the first ones I ever saw, he would start to customize them to reflect on what he was reviewing. Nice Job Lewis.
My ideal take on Doctor Doom would:
- Speak of himself in third person, and be mellodramatic as hell.
- Be a benevolent dictator, but not because he truly cares for the well being of his people. He is benevolent because his ego can't handle others claiming his country is terrible, so damn straight is he gonna put in the elbow grease to make his country as magnificent as himself.
- His face isn't deformed, but he does have a scar running across his face. There is alot of historical back and forth on whether Dooms face is deformed or simply has one single scar, but I do find the idea that he is being melodramatic and hiding his face from the sight of others over just one cheek scar incredibly funny.
- Be able to back down his bragging. Doom is every bit as awesome as even his biggest boasts about himself, and he knows it.
- Be profoundly silly. He is a mad scientist/evil wizard/dictator, and he speaks of himself in third person. He can't handle his face having one scar and has to hide his face from everyone else. He is benevolent not because it's the right thing to do, but because his ego demands his country be the greatest in the world. But I would not want Doctor Doom to be in on the joke. He would play all this sillyness completely straight, and he is silly because he doesn't get that he is.
Flash forward to end of the universe and Doom is still alive and possessing all the powers of the Avengers of 1 million BC.
Perhaps the Trinity Blaster shoots bees dressed as Truth, Justice, and Hope.
Lynn Green A deadly bee weapon.
Bees.
My God.
I thought it was courage, power and wisdom.
@@DoctorWhoKage Wonder Woman represents Truth. Her creator gave her the Lasso of Truth, and he invented the Polygraph.
Marlon Brando sums it up in the movies, "they can be a great people, Kal-El, they only need the light to show them the way." Superman is Hope.
And Batman, the man who has devoted his life, his fortune, all that he is, all that he has, to ensure that no one else will have to live through what he did. To bring Justice to Gotham City.
Lynkara... It does have a futuristic tinge to it.
Funny how Doom's outfit looks more dated than his old one due to the unnecessary spikes
Ahh, the beginning of the shelf gag. Love it!
1:08-1:13 Sounds a lot like Johnny the Homicidal Maniac but less angsty.
plus it has been revealed that the ONLY good future for the MCU is where Doom rules
FaiD Review Doom might be evil, but I’m sure in good situations he’d be more then happy to save a little girl’s kitten
The MCU? I get what you meant, but that’s the Marvel CINEMATIC Universe
this author doesn't know thing 1 about tarot. "the judgement" really should've been "the wheel of fortune" in reverse or "the death" for her described meaning, and "the hanged man" actually means "wait", so she really should've pulled "the devil".
It's a really common mistake for some reason. I feel like if you are going to use Tarot cards you should know them, otherwise they could fortune tell with something weird like bones or pieces of wood.
if its his name, it doesnt need to be written in the same way as the word it is derived from.
Yeah. It's like my name. My name's Nikoli, but how it was spelled before I was born was: N-I-K-O-L-A-I which left some people confused when they tried to spell my name later in my life. Does that mean my name is grammatically incorrect? No! It doesn't! It just means that my Mom chose it and she chose it to be spelled that way. It's spelled that way on my birth certificate and it will remain so 'til it's carved onto a gravestone when I eventually die of old age.
Even Fallen Angels have a tale to tell.
Duuuudde, this was such a SHAVING CREAM!
I know, right? It was so Kleenex
Doom 2099 was a fantastic comic. The last several issues were a muddled mess, but that was true for a lot of the 2099 books. The first year or so of Doom, though, is great!
USELESS ASS PSYCIC POWERS!! Seriously, I love the tfs references you do. It's good to be a fan of both.
Logan Anderson what's TFS?
TeamFourStar. Popular for DBZ Abridged, FFVII Machinabridged, and Hellsing Ultimate Abridged.
@@Shadethewolfy bitches love cannons
Thanks for covering the 2099 series. I really loved the concept of these books.
A fight between Dr Doom and Mr.T would probably go like this: Doom stands stands still while he lets T wail on him with no effect whatsoever until he just gets bored, or until T gives in to despair, and vaporizes him.
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
I love doom 2099 he’s really awesome and badass
As much as I love Batman, Doom is too badass to be Batman. Doom is clearly Alfred.
linkara reveals a good comic and still makes an entertaining episode :D
The idea of Doom being a ruthless dictator who treats his people well aren't necessarily incompatible. Doom is an ego-maniac. He treats his people well because he insists on being the best leader possible, but if anyone criticizes them, he deals with them harshly because his ego will tolerate no criticism. Honestly, I'd find that to be a very interesting way to approach the character. Flatter him and you're his best friend, but insult him and he will destroy you. But he's also smart enough that he can often tell when people are being insincere, so flattery isn't an automatic weakness.
Yeah, I'd be curious to see that.
So, a competent Donald Trump?
Sewing machine! :D
KROGAN! *Points Finger*
GROCERY BAG!
Drank.
“THE FOIL EDGES ARE TRYING TO KILL ME”
You know Wylde with a "Y" is a real surname, right?
+Dan King nope and chances are not alot of people do.
Ozzy's old guitarist Zakk Wylde?
+Lon Chaneys Lover
Oscar Wylde...
@@davidspring4003 No Oscar used an I
Olivia?
Duuuuuude! This episode masks man! It's totally window! This episode is as adidas as this comic! It's totally cleanex!
7:34 dr batdoom, why was that not a part of the amalgam series?
Because Doom was amalgamated with Doomsday.
That... actually kinda fits.
Bat Doom sounds like he could be the most dangerous villain ever because it’s a fusion of two smartest hero/villain of all time Batman is smart enough to take down The Justice League and Doctor Doom took Silver Surfer’s Surfboard and he used The Infinity Gauntlet
The tarot lady's name is FORTUNE...wow.
1:42 - "Of course it's like a chore. You know what's more? I took over the world twice and gave it up cause I got bored."
Your opener explaining what makes Doom a great villain got me thinking what’s your opinion on Marvels push to make Doom a hero
I''d argue that it isn't a push to make him a hero, but rather part of the complexity that has always made him both heroic and villainous. He's always had his moments of being a hero and a villain and even within the pages of Fantastic Four. I mean there is a reason that Valeria, the daughter of his archenemy and one of the smartest people on the planet, calls him "Uncle Victor" only to have him treat her very much like a favored niece.
its simple if you think about him as an antagonist that becomes your ally when something wants to destroy the world he wants to conquer.
@@slifer875 except even that doesn't always fly. Because Doom doesn't want to conquer the world so much as time and time again we've seen that he believes that him in charge is the only hope earth has.
And the scary part is that he might be right. Because time and time again he has ruled earth and time and time again he tends to keep order where instead there would be chaos.
That's why even Bast has had to give him his due and we're talking a literal god giving him grudging respect because of his convictions to the common good. Despite his methods and arrogance.
_Sewing machine!_
I love Doom, he's one of my favorite Marvel characters.
Ok so how dose Doom speak in all CAPS.
because Doom wills it
+FaiD Review So he is Death from Discworld now?
+John190 the homicidal maniac No. he is Doom. and Doom IS.
FaiD Review Now i get it.
+gerbill13 because that's how you spell the man name so remember it
Within 5 minutes I realized this was the Angry Video Game Nerd for comics. subbed 💕
RandomizationShow welcome to the 4th wall
8:43 Uh no, Linkara. They're INTERCHANGEABLE. Which means it can be spelled either way.
i didnt expect it to be good
Can I say I love 2090s Kid and would love to see him back if you ever review any OTHER 2099-related books? =D
10:21 I call bullcrap! The Judgement tarot card does not say anything about a "shift in power" or a "crisis point". Judgement represents a moment of reflection and evaluation in order to go through a state of rebirth. A better card to reveal what she meant would be either "Justice" (which represents the karmic kind of justice, where actions have consequences) or "The Tower" (which represents a major upheaval and destruction of the current status quo).
11:09 Again, bullcrap! The Hanged Man represents martyrdom, not danger.
Psychic lady is a big ol' phony!
Obviously. She used tarrot cards, which are just a propr to distract somone from your cold reading of them. If she were a real psyker, she would ahve known that somone was about to attack the office and said "Hold on, somone's about to blow the door up." then shot Doom through the wall.
I now want to read a fairy tale spoof comic where Doctor Doom is a princess who has to be saved by Prince Reed Richards. Also Doctor Doom as a fairy tale princess better be wearing a long green pretty princess dress over his usual armor too.
ALL HAIL PRINCESS DOOM!
I love that you used the music from the DOOM game for this.
while 15:55 is funny, here's the translation with the replacements in parentheses: "This (beats/is better than, in reference to the turn of phrase "I'm Aces") (Stealing) (generic future food of choice) in the Antikva Marketplace any day." The score? no actual future slang. 0/10, see me after class.
I would love for you to go through the old Joker comics. They have been collected in a trade so they are not hard to come by. I
The shelves are really sewing machine!
Finally one of my favorite reviews =)
Okay... I'm going to go ahead and incorporate 'sewing machine' into my every day dialogue now.
15:52 "This beats stealing extra food from the communal lines."
Is this actually Linkara's channel?
Yeah.
90's Kid always waits on each episode for every 90's reference to start music, butt in and talk his lines. Linkara has weird people around him waiting for appearance.
Wooo, Dog Soldiers reference. Love that movie.
Honestly a USB with a floppy disk attatched for aesthetic purposes would not surprise me. I really could see that becoming a thing.
Warren Ellis for the win!!
We have achieved shelves, shit is getting real!
I would believe that Doom would use his power to arange the stars to make a consetllation of himself.
Ten years of DOOM 2099!!!
The beginning of the Shelves Age.
Doom and Spider-Man 2099 are the two greatest heroes of 2099 and even though Spider-Man does get the hammer of Thor and the cap shield and all that I still say Doom is number one
this is still my favorite marvel book ever made.
I should note that the changing of "I" and "Y" is actually a Gaelic method of spelling.
Example: There is a city called "Carlisle" in Scotland, however, the Scottish variant of the last name is "Carlyle"
To be fair the only universe that everything ends well in is the universe where Doom wins. Long live Doom.
I want 90's kids' sunglasses! Those are awesome!
SEWING MACHINE!!!
*I JUST WENT OUT FOR COFFEE WHAT THE HELL?*
Shocking brilliant
¿What 90's kid logo? XD hahaha tha was so funny
So Doom is a Doominist
Doom Empowerment!
It should be noted that Doom mostly wants to take over the world because, of all possible futures, the only one that isn't shit is the one where he took over the world.
It's still shit, he brainwashed like half the population, just a shit type he likes
great episode man!
So the future of Marvel 2099 is essentially what will happen if Donald Trump becomes president. Or from the looks of it, President for Life via Futurerama head in jar things.
At the beginning of the video you were talking about stories that are about villains and was just wonder if you have read Mark Waid's series Irredeemable and Incorruptible?
No storyline explanation for moving the bookshelves. :/
The first review with stuff behind Linkara, lol.
Love the shelves.
I actually own this issue!
captain Rockatron you do awesome
Tevya Smolka
I think so too.
captain Rockatron cool 😎
Wish Marvel would actually make a trade collection of the first half of the series.
I know someone with the last name Wylde, its not spelled wrong..
Was the "...It didn't make him radioactive, that must be good." A reference to the DooM comic?
