About the Punisher not wanting Spidey to die by falling from the roof... it isn't that surprising.
In the 70's, he already killed people, but it wasn't as vicious as he has been portrayed in the last decades. There were instances of him letting go drug dealers with a stern warning because they were too young, or he had pity for their families. Heck, he even took a gang leader to the hospital once, so the police would take care of him.

    • @bthsr7113

I completely agree with what Lewis said on Jackal's appearence, which is why I much more enjoy the newer design where the Jackal is a man in an Anubis mask. Not only does it actually fit the name, Anubis is the perfect god to represent the man who brings people back from the dead in a way. Also, it's probably just a case of two different people coming up with the same idea, but I'd like to point out the first artist I saw come up with the Jackal Anubis look was Aitor Iñaki Eraña, also know as Terminaitor on Deviantart.

One of my favourite details about the Punisher's creation was that he wasn't the first "Punisher" in the Marvel Universe. Stan Lee had used the name before during the story-arc that introduced Galactus as one of his robotic henchmen. When he is well written I think there is a place for Frank in Marvel's stables. Mind you, it is very easy to write him poorly, and out of place in a world with armored billionaires, monsters, mad science, magic, and gods. He's also the icon of a lot of bad people who think that violent vigilantism or regular extreme lethal force from the cops are A-ok in the real world.
So I'd say let him graze in the pasture for a while, but don't plan on keeping him out there forever. He might still have a few good seasons in him.
Edit: "Sometimes I wonder if that evil's rubbed off on me."
Wow, that's a pretty good self-aware line for his first appearance. Works pretty well with the idea of the Punisher as a tragic monster. That he realizes his own sins, but feels they are still necessary, all the while worrying about going deeper and crossing those few lines he has left untouched.

I've heard the argument he should stick around, but not really be characterized as heroic, but tragic in his pursuit of "heroism". I think there has been a comic where he called some cops on that b.s. and was probably one of the more popular iterations that challenged the 2000s/2010s co-opting of his symbol for stuff that really doesn't make sense given his mission and background (he was never a cop, for 1, but also was never saying he was doing a cop's job, albeit he does seem to have the attitude of shoot first, ask questions later)

For a time in the 70s many, if not all, of Marvel's comics were 17-19 pages. I think it was a cost saving measure. They didn't go back to the current industry standard--indeed, there technically WASN'T an industry standard, really, until--in the 80s.
The "industry standard" of 22-24 story pages an issue really only got going when they started catering more and more to adult collectors and readers, and went past $1.50 an issue. Sure, there'd be books that HAD 22-24 story pages an issue, but those books often also had multiple stories an issue.

I was going to make a comment about the Punisher putting the Ass in assassin, but then Linkara started talking about the Jackal's design and it reminded me how much I HATE the discrepancy with his name and appearance. Naked, furry Green Goblin is not a good look. Heck, when I first looked into the Clone Saga, I thought that the Jackal *was* Green Goblin operating under a pseudonym or a similar villain like Hobgoblin.
From what little I understand of his origins, Jackal chose his identity because his first successful experiment was a mutated jackal that killed his family and then he genetically altered himself to gain abilities of a jackal later. With that in mind, why not have it show in his design to make him more unique? The wiry build and pointy ears are a start, maybe throw in a snout or longer claws or even a tail. And for Pete’s sake, maybe try a different color other than green! There are so many green SpiderMan villains; Green Goblin, the Lizard, Scorpion, Doc Oc, Sandman, Mysterio, the original costumes for Electro and the Vulture.
You could have Jackal’s fur mimic that of the real animal, brown with a black back. Or gold like the Golden Jackal. Or for something really bold, bright red like the dhole, an Indian wild dog that’s often called the red dog (not technically a jackal, but nobody ever said the taxonomies had to be exact).
The design doesn’t even necessarily have to go into monstrous territory. Ben Reily’s version of the costume was just a red suit with a black Egyptian Jackal eye mask. It was simple and a bit silly, but also kind of stylish and if the mask was reconfigured into something like a helmet, it could have been pretty intimidating.
Of course this is all purely from a design standpoint, Jackal's still a trainwreck in terms of character writing.

That being said, I did hear about a what if story where he became Captain America...
Also, does this mean we'll be looking at more Bronze Age Spider-Man stories? They seem to be a weird mix silly and serious. Two that come to mind, other than the first Clone Saga, are Morbius' debut and the time Doc Ock tried to marry Aunt May. In hindsight, since MCU May is younger, I'm surprised they didn't do an adaptation of that arc!

But yeah, the association is going to happen with soldiers and Punisher given Frank Castle's background and the popularization of the character in the 2000s with the Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson films (the latter very violent as I remember versus the Thomas Jane)

To answer Linkara's question, no it's not a phone sex hotline (although it'd be funny if that was the writer's intention). More than likely Spidey crashed into an office's secretarial pool, they were a popular way for big businesses and corporations to have large amounts of paperwork done on the executive level. These pools basically went away as executives were made responsible for doing the paperwork themselves.

Linkara, would you consider Catwoman a straight villain (as when she started out) or the anti hero vigilante I see her as in current comics. I ask because her, and batgirl (Barbara Gordon) really need to be in SOM sometime soon. The only issue is Catwoman’s first appearance was also the first appearance of the joker........so she would get overshadowed by someone who is the antithesis of SOM, a definite villain.
