Wait, Bruce Wayne is a rubber person? Guys... what if Bruce Wayne is actually Monkey D. Luffy after he found the One Piece and decided to become a superhero?
Why is no one talking about mr fantastic? He came out kong before this luffy character did. He's the original rubber man. The fantastic four came out in the 60s (I think) and they've been one of the longest running comic book characters.
The inverse is even funnier. Picture Luffy methodically hunting down bad guys like it's an Arkham game, scaring the crap out of them one by one while stalking them with _Pirate_ Vision, armed with gadgets Franky and Usopp cooked up for him. Then the Going Merry turns into a tank!
Could also be seen as "this is what robin looks like now". I mean, i think it looks awkward anytime someone gives Dick or Jason the speedo in a story that takes place in the past or is a flashback or something...I've always seen the original costume as retconned away. That's my head canon at least.
Really like your point about Batman and guns. So many people just dismiss the idea of even exploring the idea which frustrates me cause honestly there is an interesting conversation to be had there. Bruce using a gun and either shooting to wound only or using rubber bullets makes sense with his morality cause after all he will beat people up which can easily lead to severe injuries and even internal bleeding. The reason for him not using firearms really has more to do with the fact that it represents a weapon made specifically for killing and most importantly he has a psychological issue with it due to how his parents where killed. Many writers botch this (I hate the Brubaker issue about it where he essentially says that anyone even good guys who use guns are the "enemy" cause killing should never take a button press despite.....you know sometimes killing someone quickly being kinda needed in combat) Batman is supposed to always be able to find the non lethal solution, most people cannot and he has no qualm with that, it is a matter of Batman (and subsequently the Batman family) being there to do the impossible and prevent others from having to make that sacrifice. There is such a thing as a righteous kill, Batman is there to make sure the people of Gotham don't have to make that kind of decision though, not cause killing makes you just as bad as a a murder like Joker (as hack writers think it does) but rather because it is still a terrible thing to have to do and so Bruce wants to make sure people don't have to if he can help it
redleader antilles I agree, though I'd say rubber bullets. If a rubber bullet misses the mark, it injures the wrong part. If a regular bullet hits the wrong spot, it can kill, and Bruce doesn't seem like he'd take that risk. Though in modern time, the only gun Bruce should have is the grappling gun.
yeah obviously Bruce should not be taking that kind of risk, but a young Bruce is certainly makes sense for or if he is in a fight. Like is someone goes to shoot a hostage and a batarang will not work for some reason, he should be also to pick up a gun and disarm that person. Just reading Dixon's det run again and there was a great scene of him having to snipe gunhawk's gun away cause he took to long fighting deathstroke and he was pissed he got put in that situation. Though to the rubber bullet point, those still can kill accidentally, likely another reason Bruce just uses batarangs. They don't cause internal bleeding
Hmm an interesting take on the situation. Although I have always attributed it more to the psychological scars of having seen both of his parents gunned down in front of him. And his no kill rule, well most of the time anyways. I think some of those random thugs in Tim Burton's Batman and Batman the Animated Series are either in a coma or clinically brain dead after the thrashing they got.
Actually, a rubber bullet is capable of killing you no matter WHERE it hits, it's just less likely to do so than a real bullet (hence rubber bullets being referred to as "LESS-lethal" ammo, not "NON-lethal" ammo).
Speaking of Batman and guns, there's a Batman story called Batman: Year Two, the sequel to Batman: Year One. (You know. A story Frank Miller wrote back when he made GOOD stories) In that comic, Batman also used a gun during the climax against the villain of the story. But it doesn't stop there. The Gun he used? It belonged to Joe Chill. For those who don't know, Joe Chill is the name of the criminal who shot Thomas and Martha Wayne. That's right, Batman was using the gun that killed his parents. Granted he gets rid of the gun by the end, but still.
@@daelen.cclark Late response. But I want to make it clear. I'm not saying it detracts from the story that's told (I haven't been able to find a copy of it to read.) And it's not even the fact Batman uses a gun that I have a problem with. What bugs me is that fact that, as I mentioned, he was using the gun that killed his parents.
I just love the "murcielago" part, is so funny when they try to make a character sound spanish and then completely forget the accent. Its "murciélago", if you ever say "murcielago" someone will laugh at you. Btw, i mean the comic autors, not Linkara, he pronounced it as it was written.
Definitely so bad, it's good. Few things make sense and Batman is being way more goofy then even his Adam West incarnation, but when you finished reviewing ASBaR I was filled with a whole lot of "I don't care" while here I'm actually chuckling over how weird everything is. Just the idea of Batman making seal noises is just too funny to stay mad at it.
Asterix next? Nice! A rare case of Linkara reviewing a comic I'm familiar with beforehand. My late grandfather had a full collection of Asterix books, and I've read through many of them.
Hey Linkara it was so awesome meeting you this past weekend at Con Bravo and thanks again for signing my copies of Kickassia and the Atop the 4th Wall Vol. 1 DVD I got from you. Great review as well just as good as my old favorites of yours the All Star Batman and Robin reviews
Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming.
Other than Bats himself not being the jokey type, I don't see it working with mentor/student relations. Also, it might've been a thing when it was fresh but now it feels like a cliche of its own. To each their own, I guess. If Bats really wants to make funny quips, I prefer he emulates Dr Cox not JD or Turk.
Robin quipping at Batman, sure, but Batman's sense of humor, if he has any at all, is supposed to be dry and biting like... well, Dr. Cox. He probably is capable of being jokey when he's in his Bruce Wayne identity, but it's not in his nature.
Even if that were the case, and I don't personally agree, the manner in which Bruce does it feels awkward and out of character. Even when superman, one of his best friends makes a joke, he either makes a snide remark or basically internally face palms and has a look on his face that just says "god damn it clark...". Never actually saying anything goofy himself. Like take the animated series for example. He made some jokes and puns here and there, but he was straight faced and serious with them So the issue isn't necessarily that batman is incapable of humor, it can work. It's the type of humor and the way its presented and his own mannerisms that feel off.
It depends on Robin, if it Dick Greyson it's kinda weird. If it is Jason Todd or Damian Wayne it would be more fitting. (I use name and surname becose there are a LOT of Robins)
I mean, there's a difference between Batman pointing out someone's grimdark nature by going 'lighten up, will ya? My god, you're positively grim!' in dark irony, and, well... this.
I bought the first issue of BATMAN: Odyssey with zeal and glee, knowing Adams was returning to my favorite character. After the first read, I said to myself "Well...maybe it's me", so I read it again. The SECOND time, I thought "OK...maybe it's the stroke (which I had recently had.) The THIRD time through, I came to the conclusion "No, it's NOT the stroke...and it's not ME...though the artwork is beautiful...THIS DAMNED BOOK MAKES NO SENSE!!" Like a bad movie you've already paid to see, but now you HAVE to see how it ends, I eventually got the trade paperback, and (once I prepared myself properly) laughed HYSTERICALLY at this "comedy masterpiece!" I was stunned to learn of Mr. Adams' passing yesterday, and will choose to remember his ENTIRE body of work...but maybe about once a year, I will take THIS out for an annual chortle! RIP Neal!!
So Batman initially used guns but he stopped because he got shot by bandits and was rescued by the Mexican Punisher who tells him that guns shouldn't be used by pussies, later he gives a speech to Robin about why he thinks guns are stupid, then Man-Bat and some kind of gargoyle monster argue about something in the Batcave while Batman goes to a pier to avoid the Riddler and do an impression of Kite-Man? And this is all a story being told by Batman, about... guns, I think? What?
I like this Batmobile. It looks practical. I'll never forget the ridiculous sight of the 1989 Micheal Keaton Batmobile needing a grappling hook to make a moderately tight corner due to just how huge and unwieldy it is.
Wow this really makes Niel Adams’s weird arguments in favor of an expanding earth make more sense. Firing a gun with a bullet wound through your forearm (no grip strength), perfect hearing in the midst of a gunfight (ear ringing), it’s just so confused.
I don't know if anyone else mentioned this already, but Neal Adams designed Tim's costume, so that's probably the reason he went with that design as opposed to Dick's classic short pants and pixie boots outfit. He seems quite fond of that design.
Y'know, to be fair, I COULD see Batman being inspired by BOTH Zorro and James Bond. It would certainly explain a lot. Also, I think the reason Dick Grayson is very clearly dressed like Tim Drake...might actually be the fault of the animated shows. For some reason, ever since Tim Drake's costume was introduced in the comics, the cartoons featuring Robin would use that as the default costume for the character, despite the fact that, more often than not, it was Dick as Robin. Even in the New 52, his original costume was changed to look more like Tim's. So it's not outside the realm of possibility that the artist simply drew him in Tim's costume out of habit of seeing him in it. Mind you, that's still a major botch, but it's at least one with an explanation.
Agreed. I often find myself saying "Batman is like James Bond, except..." and then I trail off trying to think of any significant differences. Um... well, he's not working for the queen, and... he's not as eager to sleep with women for information. Uh... he rarely drinks. That's all I've got.
Chris O'Donnell's Dick Grayson wore the Tim Drake suit as well in BATMAN FOREVER (both the spandex circus suit and the full-armor Robin costume). I think the decision simply came down to Drake's suit translating better in a modern context than Dick's original look.
@@reidmason2551 Tim's costume, with the full covered legs, looks more "straight" than the original costume, given how Dick's own image was considered a gay/camp icon for decades. Which might be hilariously ironic considering what's very likely to happen to Tim next week. EDIT: LMAO I was right.
He doesn't know he's possessed by the Entity. The lost beast only takes control when it wants to. At the moment he doesn't. When the Entity isn't in control, Linkara is himself.
I feel like this is a call back to the silver age with a more modern aesthetic. Either that, or they're going for an Adam West kind of flavor, and I feel like that helps make this a little bit special, in both definitions of the term.
So I got a short art outline revolving around that scene on top of the train. There were no speech bubbles, just black and white pencils. That bit where it cuts away to Bruce and Dick confused the ever loving shit out of me, and I had no context to fill in the blanks. I honestly thought he had an invisible mask or something covering his face to hide from the guy charging him.
You know how you said that this is all just a weird episode of Rick and Morty? For the love of everything, PLEAAAAASE do a Rick voice for Batman and a Morty voice for Robin. Keep the Halloween Batman mask though. It's hilarious.
Odyssey Batman is too cool a dude to be Rick- Crazy Steve is the REAL Bat-Rick. Only in personality only, because Crazy Steve isn’t smart enough to be a Rick. This is more like one of those Spider-Man episodes that were just Rocket Robinhood episodes with Spidey painted over Robinhood, only it’s Batman instead.
From what I could find on Wikipedia, it's just what it sounds like; a theory that the Earth is expanding. And what I mean by that is, the planet itself is growing bigger without altering its own mass. Like a balloon. The theory was apparently put forth to explain certain geological effects, but it has largely been abandoned due to all the proof against such a thing. As an idea for a science fiction or fantasy world, this sounds fine. As a scientific idea, in todays' world it sounds positively moronic.
“There wasn’t a communications breakdown between the artist and writer- they’re the same guy!” That doesn’t actually rule out the possibility. And considering that… it would explain a lot.
I'd say the boy blunder scene is more of a jovial jab. He's become so comfortable with the lad that he can be a little comedic at times in good faith. I really enjoyed this comic for its portrayal of Batman. He feels more light hearted, like a batman that has a moment to relax and spend time with the people he's close with while doing business as usual
There seems to be a common line that authors or comic creators have that Spider-Man being more akin to his roots is better than the whole Marriage thing even though fans preferred that. And yet by that logic then why did they ever advance his character in any direction and just have him be a forever high schooler instead. Like...seriously. Honestly i'd say the direction Peter's in now of being yet another philanthropist CEO is more ruinous and off putting to the idea that defines Spider-Man than whatever the problems were before One More Day.
PolsrPhsntom Not really, it just makes Peter another rich superhero, of which there are many of already. Spidey's appeal is that he's a very relatable hero, who comes from a similar background as most readers would. Also, I just love how so many creators are alright with Peter saving the universe, becoming a CEO, having clones, dying and coming back to life, etc, but marriage goes against what he he was originally stood for.
But Peter Parker is a genius. He is no longer a boy in high school who can only solve things with fighting. Getting wealthy means he no longer worry about trivial things and him sharing his inventions with the rest of mankind would make it safer and he can use his wealth to address the root of a problem rather than the stem.
@@azuresaiyan9005 that doesn't work, because even before we got "modern" Spider-Man, Stan Lee was already having Peter grow up. He went from High School to College all while Stan was writing him. Spidey was never going to stay a kid.
He... He's gonna review an Astérix comic? He's gonna review an ASTÉRIX comic?!? Dude, I LOVE Astérix! It's my all-time favorite Franco-Belgian comic book series! I never thought this would ever happen, but I'm so pleased to see that someone on Patreon managed to make him review an album from that series. Though I'm surprised it's not one of the comics made by Albert Uderzo on his own, given that the ones made after the death of co-creator René Goscinny are usually seen as much weaker, particularly the one with aliens in it. But still, an Astérix comic reviewed by Linkara? Bring it on!
Something that it kind of bugs me that Linkara didn't address are the anachronisms in their portrayal of the Orient Express. First of all, that conductor doesn't quite know why the train was called that. Its name came from the fact that it ran from Paris to Istanbul, which back in its heyday of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was a very long route for a train to go on and with a seemingly exotic and far-off destination. This also kind of answers the second problem I have with this: The Orient Express, considering it travelled from Paris to Istanbul, wouldn't possibly be going through the States, meaning that the Mexican spy wouldn't be violating a law about working on American soil.
so simply going off what is shown in this review, I'm pretty sure that the "Other" Man-Bat, is actually a manifestation of his mind. He states specifically that he HAD to come in the Man-Bat form to tell Bruce something, and we see the creature pushing him to tell him that something. In addition to the earlier statements about guns making Batman/Robin feel "strong", I think it was meant to be implying that he was drawing inner strength from the serum, or the transformation. I don't know much about ManBat's lore, so I may be way off, but that was how I read that part
Two things: First off, think I know why the flashbacks are the way they are. The art and word balloons are what's actually going on at the time, and the narrative captions are Bruce telling the story. However, _there is no indication of this in the comic itself._ Not even an author's note. That and it's likely (but not certain) that the moment with him mentioning the semi-auto pistols was meant in general, but again, there's no indication of that in the book itself! Also: I _need_ to see a Dr. Seuss-style book about crimefighting.
Ohhhh, you haven't read too far into the book yet, I see. Odyssey gets... it gets like, Marville level crazy. The first issue only hints at the madness to come.
Yeah, the facial expressions are weird, but the artwork itself is actually quite nice for the majority of it. But the dialog is seal-shit insane. ARF ARF! But, if you just ignore the dialog and look at the artwork, the comic seems like it is going though the motions of a standard storyline. The dialog looks like it was all placeholder.
FINALLY! I've been waiting years for you to review this. I agree it is bizarre, poorly-written, ridiculous and confusing. Can't wait to see the rest of the series!
I think the Text Boxes being different from the Thought Balloons is supposed to be that trope where you tell someone you did something cool but in reality you did a lame- i.e. "I used my cunning to persuade them to follow my lead!" (I cried like a blubbering idiot until they pitied me)
In the train robbers defense with the demon comment, I feel like that panel actually WOULD represent a frightening image: a 3 pointed head atop a muscular body, with the cape flapping in the wind in a rather frightening manner. (Granted, yeah, once Batman got any closer and i saw the floppy ears, i'd lose all fear immediately)
It amuses me when people say OMD "saved" Spider-Man so he could be who he was meant to be. Really? Well Stan Lee and Steve Ditiko created Spider-Man and it was Stan Lee's idea to marry Peter and Mary Jane. Wouldn't he know better than any who Spider-Man was meant to be?
Ah, Neal Adams, artist of some of the most influential comics like Green Lantern & Green Arrow run and Batman: Demon Saga. It just bizarre, I couldn't finish first issue.
well to be fair, guns dont automatically mean death, one can shoot someone to maim or even disable. Guns dont kill people, its people intent on killing someone with guns that kill people.
Not a big deal. If he point his grappling thing on someones head and shoot it, any normal guy would be dead, because it's powerful enough to get strong root in a walls. Allso guns can be loaded with rubber and other non-letal bullets, which realy less letal. That's missed opportunity.

Batman: Gomu Gomu no Bulle- WAIT, WHAT AM I DOING?!?
@@dynostretch9215 ONE BAT!
Yo ho ho he's the goddamn batman.
I think the reason Neal Adams decided to dress Dick with Tim's Robin costume is that Neal Adams was responsible for designing it in the first place.
So, its an Easter egg?
I guess that's understandable.
I think some of those random thugs in Tim Burton's Batman and Batman the Animated Series are either in a coma or clinically brain dead after the thrashing they got.
redleader antilles I
Actually, a rubber bullet is capable of killing you no matter WHERE it hits, it's just less likely to do so than a real bullet (hence rubber bullets being referred to as "LESS-lethal" ammo, not "NON-lethal" ammo).
Didn't he also accidently throw a guy into a garbage compactor in that story?
Robo - Nidai
I’ve actually heard that story’s pretty good.
Year Two was actually written by Mike Barr.
I liken the seal moment to...pretty much any funny moment in an MCU movie. It's just that funny.
always cracks me up when he uses his Batman voice when it's just Bruce Wayne talking to people.
When you think about it, the Batman from the early seasons of Batman The Animated Series was closer to the Bronze Age Batman than the 90's Batman
Thanks! I hope you enjoy the DVD! ^_^
I would love to see you continue to riff on this ludicrous nonsense of a series featuring Crazy Steve's sane, yet still jokey cousin, Goofy Steve!
Are we sure it's not "Batman Oddity" ?

9;04 Another thing to mention about the whole 'Batman with guns' thing is that, if you remember Beyond, it's ultimately what made Bruce retire.
Yeah. Him needing one made him realize that he's no longer Batman and is just a man fighting for his life.
I dunno, Robin and Batman throwing small insults at each other just seems like something friends and family do for fun. And hey, they're both.
He made some jokes and puns here and there, but he was straight faced and serious with them
So the issue isn't necessarily that batman is incapable of humor, it can work.
My god, you're positively grim!' in dark irony, and, well... this.
Not really related to the review but I really like that Linkara reads Bruce Wayne as Batman even when he isn't in costume.
Bad Batman is always fun.
Don’t you mean Badman?
Now I want to hunt this comic down just for shits and giggles.
Also, I love that floppy mask he used.
Defintly would be a interesting read.
I'm tempted to do the same no lie.
Read it online lol
Kennedy Haagen it’s that good huh?! 😂😂😅
RIP Neal!!
Okay, now I'm hooked. How will this comic review involve Cheese Wiz?
This is Crazy Steve's less crazy, friendlier brother, Insane Bob.
Not less crazy, just less violent and dangerous; I’d argue Insane Bob to be even less lucid.
This feels like Batman in this comic is actually the Lego version of him.
What?
Does it make your head hurt as much as it does mine?
This plot is getting less focused than Uncharted 3.
That’s about as concise a description of Batman odyssey I’ve ever been able to find. Well done.
Neal Adams: COCAINE IS MY GAWWWWWWWWD!
From what I remember, Adams actually designed Tim's suit and just wanted to use it here.
The Halloween Batmask is one of my favorite running gags
Honestly, I kinda love the goofy banter between batman and robin in this.
I like this Batmobile. It looks practical. I'll never forget the ridiculous sight of the 1989 Micheal Keaton Batmobile needing a grappling hook to make a moderately tight corner due to just how huge and unwieldy it is.
Better than the Tumbler, or the Batpod. Or the Batwing, actually.
"I'm more like some kind of rubber person."
"Gomu Gomu No.... BATARANG!"
Wow this really makes Niel Adams’s weird arguments in favor of an expanding earth make more sense. Firing a gun with a bullet wound through your forearm (no grip strength), perfect hearing in the midst of a gunfight (ear ringing), it’s just so confused.
"6 dollars a gallon?!" Greetings from 2022.
He came out way before James Bond.
EDIT: LMAO I was right.
and then they kept stealing from tim and he would never recover in any medium outside of comics to this day
I like how he's possessed by the entity but still takes the time to review comics.
He doesn't know he's possessed by the Entity. The lost beast only takes control when it wants to. At the moment he doesn't. When the Entity isn't in control, Linkara is himself.
Yes
Thank Gahhhhad for a new Linkara review.
You know, the batman mask with the floppy ears really remind of the 1949 batman that rifftrax did
I feel like this is a call back to the silver age with a more modern aesthetic. Either that, or they're going for an Adam West kind of flavor, and I feel like that helps make this a little bit special, in both definitions of the term.
Oh boy! I have been hoping for this for a while. Hopefully we'll eventually also get to Batman: The Widening Gyre.
Anyone one who defends "One More Day" fucking loses me instantly.
(internal thoughts)I thought about the moral question of whether I should use guns....
(says aloud) "I LIKE CHEESE WHIZ!!!!"
Also: Neal Adams is a proponent of expanding earth "theory"
I'll give you time to recover from the palm imprints in your forehead.
You're paying for the indent I left in the wall.
Don't suppose you'd explain this please?
I smashed my head on the wall.
firefly4f4 And... I'm a bit afraid to ask.... is that?
I _love_ that title card! It's even funnier in context.
YES! YOU'RE DOING THAT COMIC, and one of the funniest and my favorites too! Ready your magic potions!
TactlessC Peter is gonna lose his company and go back to the daily buggle. They announced that a while ago if I am not wrong
I think Peter being a Tony Stark figure can be interesting for character development.
And I look forward to what the MCU does to Spidey.
You going “arf arf” in your Batman voice is hilarious to me!
15:26- To be fair, Dick also wore the Tim Drake Robin suit in Batman: The Animated Series.
19:04 Why didn't you make a Kiss from a Rose (by Seal) joke when they brought up seals (especially since it's in Batman Forever)?
OMG, I love Asterix! Those comics were a huge part of my childhood! Can't wait for next week!
so simply going off what is shown in this review, I'm pretty sure that the "Other" Man-Bat, is actually a manifestation of his mind.
It really speaks volumes that a man dressed as a bat arf arf-ing like a seal is not the weirdest thing he's ever done.
Two things:
First off, think I know why the flashbacks are the way they are.
“Arf, arf!”
I bust out laughing at that. Like… the hell? What a weird tone…
I must say that I love the way Batman looks on this art!!
Floppy eared "I am the night!" improved my day.
The problem with bringing in living legends to make comics is the editors are too afraid to tell them no.
I actually fought this was okay until Man-bat came and everything got really complicated
"I used my cunning to persuade them to follow my lead!" (I cried like a blubbering idiot until they pitied me)
Batman: I'm more like some rubber person.
Monkey D. Luffy: ...Ripping off my thing, huh?! At least give me credit!!
I know this is a non-storyline episode, but I still can't help but be a little creeper out by... the truth.
?
In the train robbers defense with the demon comment, I feel like that panel actually WOULD represent a frightening image: a 3 pointed head atop a muscular body, with the cape flapping in the wind in a rather frightening manner. (Granted, yeah, once Batman got any closer and i saw the floppy ears, i'd lose all fear immediately)
This is the comic equivalent of letting the drummer in the rock band write a song by himself, isn't it?
I'll thank you not to insult Octopus' Garden.
The other day I was wondering why Linkara never reviewed this stinker. And by the mother of all coincidences he just did. Finally.
AT4W on my little ones bday. Can get better for me? lol keep up the great work, love the story.
Happy Birthday!

Nostalgia critic: Batman fans beware there's killing in this movie.

Lol
well to be fair, guns dont automatically mean death, one can shoot someone to maim or even disable.
