  • Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at a two-part story from the Clone Saga!

RUMINATIONS: So you may have noticed some effects shots of Comicron One look very different than when I originally put up the episodes. Basically, the Game Show Reviewer (who did a lot of special effects for the AT4W Movie) has been playing around with the model of Comicron One - doing some stock shots of the ship at warp, in orbit, all that fun stuff. However, one of the things he decided to do was an exterior shot from this episode, wherein Nimue is disabled and the lights go out, then followed by everything turning red. Since we were coming up on the episode in the reuploads anyway, I decided to add in the new effects.
Yes, I am George Lucasing this episode, but honestly it IS the kind of thing I wanted originally and it’s not really changing anything in the story or the like - just adding in new effects. Expect one such shot in the final part of the arc, but otherwise everything else is the same.
On that note, let’s talk about our cliffhanger here. Vyce is supposed to play a larger part in the storyline currently going on in the show, so I needed to get him back on earth. As part of that, people have been saying since Nimue debuted with the HAL 9000 eye that she was going to go crazy, so I decided to play that up and misdirect people. Plus her starting to malfunction more seriously could explain why they weren’t able to find Jaeris during the Gunslinger arc despite having a warship specifically designed to track interdimensional beings. The arc words and Vyce’s reveal at the end were a direct homage to System Shock II yet again, from Shodan’s reveal there.

SPOILERS (but really, it's Judas Traveller, so who really cares?)
He was a criminal psychologist who suffered a mental breakdown awakening his dormant mutant powers to "alter perception". With these abilities he often appeared far more powerful than he really was.
And he was being manipulated all along by Green Goblin.

This kind of searching for the answer to existential questions makes sense in 2 ways. 1) they’re traumatized and are looking for some kind of understanding for why bad stuff happens. 2) They’re like The Beyonder and are so powerful and so alien to the rest of us, that they really could pull this sort of stuff just for boredom.

You know what keeps me coming back to old episodes? That the overarching Linkara/Comicron storylines aren't just cleverly written & properly weighted with drama, lore, action, & sarcastic comedy ... It's that Linkara acts so convincingly well in what could all too easily have been just a silly little video!

Judas Traveler's logic: I'm gonna show Spider-Man a future *I* created, blame it on him for no real reason, tell him he can stop it, but also say that if all he cares about is his wife, he needn't do anything, knowing full well that Spider-Man WILL risk everything to save millions.
yeah, Judas...maybe what you should have done is MADE Spidey CHOOSE between the millions and his family. That would actually create conflict and be interesting. Granted, I bet Spidey would still have chosen the millions over his family, and STILL been able to rescue them, but the moral dilema would still be more interesting than "oh, you can stop the catastrophe, but why bother if your FAMILY'S gonna be safe regardless."

In retrospect, they could easily have taken Judas Traveller as a character who looks at superheroes themselves, and tries to unravel the cause of why the known multiverse has a propensity for wearing coloured spandex and punching other members of itself. Understanding the Marvel-ous nature of Marvel from within the universe. Attempting to achieve a Marvel version of The Elder Scrolls' CHIM, breaking the fourth wall whilst still interacting with things behind it.
Buuuut they couldn't be assed giving him such a motivation.

I just came up with a straightforward motivation for Judas Traveller that would give his actions a meaning and purpose and it literally took five seconds of thought (which means the writers, especially DeMatteis, could have come up with it as well instead of just making shit up as they went):
Let's pretend Traveller was never revealed to be far weaker than he claims, although this could still work if he turned out to be the misguided charlatan with delusions of demigod status. He's studying the nature of good and evil to see what motivates the truly good and heroic people of the Marvel U. He wants to know this because he wants to manipulate the events in the lives of other people in the Marvel U so that they become, from his POV, better human beings by inflicting upon them similar circumstances that shaped people like Peter Parker. Essentially, regardless of power, he has a benevolent god complex, in his own way trying to make the world a better place. His methods of doing this though make him someone who needs to be stopped. Admittedly, this motivation does nothing to solve the problem of him not really fitting in as a Spider-Man villain, but at least he'd have some kind of understandable purpose instead of vague clues that add up to nothing.

Johan Jameson would be like "I told you so! Like from a Doyleist perspective, I get that it's because they're filming inside somebody's house, so obviously they wouldn't be wearing shoes, but from a Watsonian perspective, I love the idea of Jaeris getting dressed, but instead of putting on shoes, he just puts on his black socks instead. That cliffhanger, tho. Really made my jaw drop.
Funny thing about this comic and your review of it, Linkara. It got me to think about villain motivations and all that, especially with my own characters. One of the villains of a story I've written is a tyrannical anthropomorphic alligator who, long story short, wants to empower carnivores over herbivores because he's what could be considered a social Darwinist: he believes only the strong should survive, and it's nature's way. His biggest archrival, the king of the main setting, on the other hand, believes all animals are equal regardless of species.
Might not be much, and I wont bore you with the full details, but I feel it's at least something, which is more than I can say for Judas Traveler.

Traveler and Scrier are two god like entities who have been withdrawn and observing humanity for so long one views humanity as ultimately good and the other views humanity as ultimately evil respectively. Both decide to have a contest with champions to prove who is right.
Traveler believing in good is revealed to have dictated events so that Peter gets bitten by the spider and subsequent events to make him more of a hero
Scrier has influenced events to create spideys villains even manipulating Jackle from the Ally who was supposed to create the clone to assist Peter to someone obsessed with Gwen to the point where he wants to kill Peter.

Ever since the ending of the first part of the climate of fear review, I became GENUINELY terrified of her. I can't say that about ANY of the previous enemies. The only time the entity has REALLY terrified me was when he laughed out of nowhere when Linkara said he escaped from Vyce because he was scared of him. The dude is creepy, sure, but terrifying beyond all belief? I don't know.

"Top of New York" could be "Top of the Rock," which has a famous observation deck that gives you a great view of the city, but this is just my best guess as it's the only thing I can find that is even close to what the comic does.
And no, it does not have a giant neon sign on it. If such a location does exist, the neon sign is probably just put there for the sake of the audience - in which case it fails its purpose, because just having it be a random building wouldn't have been weird, and adding that sign just makes you wonder where it's supposed to be.

  • @k-trashradio5163
    @k-trashradio5163 2 роки тому +1

the neon building is probably a reference to the offices of the new yorker magazine which has used a bright neon sign that's always been visible from the jersey side of the hudson for years.

"I hope you watched last year's video, otherwise that statement really confused you."
I remember having a 2XL tape as a kid that was a Spider-Man story. In one of the branching paths, the Vulture just out of nowhere talks about attacking Mary Parker and the narrator says the line, "Spider-man is full of rage listening to the Vulture talk about attacking the android that impersonated his mother."
In retrospect, that should have been confusing as hell, but as a kid, I was just like, "Oh. I guess that happened," and proceeded to ignore that it was brought up.

I have a mad theory for the later episodes about who this mysterious being is who know plays chess with linkara, who Lord Vyce hunts, my theory is that its the original Nimue.
Remember what Pollo said, a copy isn't the original one so in this episode, the original Nimue is dead and replaced by a fake, a new Nimue pretending to be the original: Pretenders sit upon my throne.
She's come back and seeks revenge now for what happened to her. she remembers who killed her: I remember my death.
The next time I'm stuck on, and I think are false ends.
Nimue is looking everywhere, she's watching him as he continues on, without her, the original her, maybe she's looking over him from the original Pollo body: I am looking over your shoulder.
And the last one is the warning, meaning she will raise to power, but to what and how, I can't say.
As for killing the king of worms, its easily explained, she's been exposed to both the entity and lord vyce in his data form, she's been tainted before and now, I think abit of it rubbed off on her.
If anyone can help me prove this theory, or figure out if the one bits DO have meaning then tell me?

To anyone who comes by to watch this for the first time, I will save you all some time.
"Spoilers" below this point for who Judas Traveler is
Judas Traveler is a mutant with the power to create illusions and minor psionic contact. He had a mental breakdown and believed himself a lot more powerful, old and gifted than he actually was. Norman Osborn gave him a nice little ill defined "purpose" that played into his delusions to mess with Spider-Man and his Travelers "minion", Scrier, is actually Osborn's clean-up crew to kill Traveler the second he finish messing with Spider-Man, or fails so Osborn doesn't have a delusional psychic with a god complex on the loose to clean up later.
(Yup, that's it. The writers got so tired of having to maintain mystique from one writer to the other, none with their own back story they eventually just narratively threw the character out as too pretentious to possibly be even half as important as he claimed to be.)

  • @dragonsword8129

8:43 Oh no. I watch Ultimate Spider-man and they have him do this there. Only they actually have him pause the episode so he can talk directly to the audience and explain things we already freaking know!!!
The series has improved over its run, it really has. But I just don't understand why they still feel the need to do this when it would be so much easier to do a Previously On segment! If Comic books have learned not to do this THEN WHY THE HECK HASN'T THE SHOW!!!

I can't help but compare Judas Traveler to The Beyond in Spider-man: The Animated Series, and he looks even worse. The Beyonder had very clear motivations and goals: He was a genuinely nigh-omnipotent alien entity who was willing to mess with an entire planet as part of some experiment in good vs. evil because he was so powerful that regular folks were as trivial as bugs to him and he was bored. The Beyonder wasn't pretentious, wasn't more mysterious than he needed to be, and he was pretty clear on what he was doing--dumping a bunch of heroes and villains on an alien planet and watching the fireworks.Another character I'm reminded of: Fusion. He has basically the exact same powers as Traveler, but is MUCH more interesting because his motivations are explained and are easy to understand and sympathize with. Even better, his character forces Peter to be more introspective and question his own actions. Oh, yeah, and like The Beyonder, Fusion WASN'T constantly spouting pretentious, pseudo-profound nonsense.

  • @gwendolynwestwind9764
    @gwendolynwestwind9764 6 років тому +1

This is just a guess on my part, but I think they were trying to imply that Judas Traveller is the Wandering Jew. If you don't know the myth, basically a Jewish man mocked Jesus as he was on his way to be crucifed and god took particular exception to the guy and made him immortal until the return of Jesus as punishment, forcing him to wander the world in the meantime. This makes sense if you're a deity I guess. The name 'Judas Traveller', the writing about being centuries old and wanting to bring the "day of redemption", it just really feels like that was the reveal they were building up to, and then changed their minds at the last minute.
DC comics used the Wandering Jew myth with the character of the Phantom Stranger, although I don't remember which of these came first.

i remember reading the clone saga when it came out in the 90s, Travelers' real back story was very anti-climatic. Also, I think that there could have been a good character here, but instead of what we got you could do this. Make him a character called Dr. Judas, a scientific rival of The Jackal's in the field of cloning with his students still being his students but they learn cloning from him as opposed to this metaphysical stuff.. The two of them are competing against each other to see who can perfect the process and Dr. Judas is examining the Spiders to see how far Jackal has gotten instead of this whole "the nature of good and evil" crap he was wrapped up in.

Judas Traveller is a higher dimensional being who wants to understand the nature of the human soul and whether good or evil is what ultimately reflects that nature, because our puny lives make him curious . He focuses on Spider-Heroes like Peter and Ben because of their incredible resolve that surpasses even common sense and he wants to see if they’ll hold that resolve or break, either result informing his understanding of human nature. He’s like a more consistently antagonistic Q
    There! Sorted it out
If you want a more concrete goal, maybe he’s trying to judge humanity’s worthiness to continue existing
