The irony is that a church situated right next to a brothel is a perfect arrangement for Catholics.
Priest does not know his blessings. His attendance will skyrocket.
Sunday Mass in the morning, quick lunch with the family, tea with the boys in afternoon, come evening embracing vices the priest talked about in the morning.
More like
Since there are no young underage boys nearby , they can really focus on other religious activities
Toranaga was thoughtful
@@dandansfu Boys can be imported. Toranaga just denied them the excuse, since now courtesans will be much easier to obtain et masse. However, it all might prove to be hard to suddenly change tastes.
Yep, if he were Mormon he'd be grateful for all the opportunity to win over wicked sinners.
@@dandansfu You are disgusting and shameless to make this comment.
Sin in the evening, ask forgiveness the next morning - Lol
And within easy walking distance too!

It’s almost too perfect

Disney's Hunchback, but everybody is Frollo.
Its not just a brothel, a whole district and mini city. A whole new subculture of artist that would become the geishas. Her vision went far beyond a new brothel. Or even a tea house where people come to be served tea and be comforted by their psychologist courtesan women. And that's what omi is failing to see. He fails to see beyond the short term.
one of most notable marks of tokugawas 3 centuries reign on japan.
I wonder what those "psychologist's" treatment for anxiety and depression besides talking 😏
Omi’s entire character in the book is that he’s a visionary.
Well he would have absolutely no idea what her overall plan was at this point, as far as he knows this woman is just another human slaver.
@@kungalexander829 Idk, but I heard the tea is very good. like yummy-yummy good... or smth ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Why the disappointment, Father? There'll be plenty of souls to save right there.
Yeah, preacher's kid here, and that's just how my father would have responded to it - "Praise God for placing us where we are most needed."
Amen!
Yeah isn’t it make his job more meaningful?
Disappointed coz no young boys in sights
Only women and men ……
@@celebrim1 I used to attend a church that was in a part of town where there were a bunch of witchcraft and hex shops around
Toranaga was trying to say that they are the same sort of people.
The biggest troll ever
In the book the madam is quite the character, deffo higher than the catholics in respect. tho not in the show as yet it seems.
I think Toranaga was saying F U, with literal F and lots of it. Lol
Greatest way to put it
No, the brothel is merely the exchange of money for sexual services.... subject to the parties being free and consenting it's clean and mutually rewarding. But religion is a perversion of the human spirit, selling delusion and lies. Thankfully it no longer has suasion over any rational mind, as science renders it redundant.
I admire Lady Gin’s actress. She captures a look I have only seen on my own mother. When she finally saved enough for a home in the country after raising 3 kids. Lady Kiku reminds me of myself as a supportive child. Centuries have passed, and this kind of honorable, sacrificial relationship between generations still shines through.
Lady Gin is also a mother and a Mama-San. She is ambitious and miserly but also thinks about the well-being of her people. She may live from sin but she seeks to improve her situation and be the best at what she does both for herself and her children. Isn't that all mothers want?

Father, it’s really not that bad! The light shines brightest in the dark corners. That the church will be built next to a brother gives a clear signal to the townsfolk that they have a choice besides enslaving themselves to carnal appetites.
.... or enslaving themselves to stone age delusion and fear of the boogeyman.
I mean, biblically, Jesus would spend a lot of time with sinners, including prostitutes. And given how packed early modern European cities were, a catholic clergyman probably wouldn't be too perplexed by a church ending up close to a disreputable place.
I can't help but feel so happy for Gin. Her expressions from 0:18 onwards tell you her whole story.
The look of a person who achieved her dream
Really good acting here. When I saw her face, envisioning their future, it made me wonder what it took for her to get there. Then for her dream to finally be within reach, must be relieving.
I liked the video just because of that expression, the look of someone finally seeing their dream realized after countless years of waiting and hoping is one I hope will grace my own face one day.
This gives a complete new meaning to the phrase: plug-and-pray
forgive me father for I have been next door
On the bright side, it gives you a reason to go to confession.
Toranaga took personally “Jesus comes for the sick not for the healthy.”
It's while sexual activity is still the main feature during this period we begin to see the development of what will become the Geisha. Though the geisha would not appear until the 1800s, the role and status of courtesans as artistic and romantic entertainers were a tradition that geisha came to inherit, with the basic artforms of entertaining guests through song, dance and conversation being employed and adapted to contemporary tastes.
I've read autobiographies by Samurai. The idea that geisha weren't prostitutes doesn't hold up to scrutiny. They were prostitutes that the upper class could patronize while saying to themselves how superior they were to those that sought prostitutes. In reality, geisha would accept gifts and then offer sexual favors, under the pretense of mutual attraction. The term "courtesan" is a very good translation of a similar sort of upper-class prostitute in Western culture. They were professional mistresses, often of multiple men at the same time who would via for their attention.
That scowl isn't fooling anyone father. We know you have a loyalty card with her.
I don’t think they are interested in women
Especially women over age of majority
district's gonna be busy all day and night!
Entertainment at night, confession at morning.

Acting in this show is amazing.
Let’s see who converts more of the other’s followers 😂
Jesus came to save the lost father Marin, not the righteous.
You would do well to remember that and be thankful they do not have far to go to find your aid.
Is Martin, not Marin. In spanish pronouns mar-tín
There's room for everyone
Toranaga wanted some amusement in his life and he planned this..
Best joke in the series?
Maybe. I still think the best was Buntaro complaining about the smell of the pheasant that had been gone for days.
@@jcarry5214nah best joke is Yabu kept rewriting his will throughout the season
@@madtitan0825 i figured that was a cultural thing, ha.
A courtesan house outside of an area that we would know as a red light district would have all sorts of businesses pop up around it to serve the people there. It will be a very busy area and more people would surround the church as a result. Despite the neighbors, that area is a much greater benefit than being put in an out of the way corner somewhere. Furthermore, I think the brothel will likely be more impacted by the church than vice versa.
Consider how courtesans were revered also in some european cities, as in Venice or Florence, some of their customers were (not so secretly) clergy 's higher-ups.
The mud flats miles from anywhere are the “best” plots in the city?
It's called a outlaw church. Being the teaching closer to the people who need it.
If only the Father knows what that city will become a few centuries later.
This makes sense when you remember Toranaga hates Catholics
Why are you making that decision?
As a Japanese, I would be surprised if you said it like that.
The ancient gods of Japan consider the birth and increase of human beings (reproduction) as a natural part of life, and neither reject nor avoid it.
They do not consider it sinful, nor are they offended by it.
In Japan, we call the ancient Japanese gods "oya" (distant ancestors of our parents) in the same way we call our parents or ancestors, and consider them as one of our own ancestors.
Most parents would rejoice at the birth of their children and their growth, wouldn't they?
Grandparents would likewise rejoice at the birth and growth of their grandchildren, wouldn't they?
Reproduction is necessary for a child to be born, and it is not something that anyone is forbidden or offended by.
That is why, since ancient times, brothels and entertainment districts have been set up next to or near shrines in Japan.
There was no need to hide it or be ashamed of it, because the society recognized that the ancient gods of Japan approved of people engaging in reproductive acts.
The idea of sin or shame was completely unimaginable in Japan at that time.
This was the traditional Japanese attitude toward prostitutes and brothels until the United States and other European countries introduced and spread Christianity to Japan.
So the Japanese rulers of the time followed the old Japanese custom and set up Christian churches next to the prostitutes' towns.
It is a complete misunderstanding that the missionaries who suddenly came to Japan and the American and European people of today are offended in this way, simply because the American and European people do not know enough about Japan.
Japanese historians living today often say so.
They say that this was just the warlords introducing the missionaries to one of the cultures of Japan.
There are just too many misconceptions and assumptions by people in the US and Europe.
In fact, there are records of Japanese warlords and officials being surprised at the confusion and anger of the missionaries.
Their view is that the political component would have been thin.
This is a scene that shows that the missionaries had not studied Japanese customs and needed a more accurate description of Japan at that time.
It is unfair to incorporate only the claims of American and European missionaries into the drama.
@mymemoriesofgoldenricefiel6472 - But, this is not about reproduction or anything about promulgation, or even about any Japanese gods. It's about sexual desire, pure business, and power play among the elite who patronize these places.
Even Japanese Buddhist and Shinto worshippers abhor such things. Desire is the greatest cause of suffering in the Buddhist teaching. One must deny such things. Deny one's ego and idea of oneself to attain enlightenment.
Christian teaching encourages procreation and responsibility of the father to his family. Taking care of his children and faithful to ones wife. Not spend ones money on courtesans and be under the finger of the head mistress.😅😅😅
Very different to his former Lord Oda Nobunaga whose more progressive and welcoming of Western culture. Tokugawa Ieyasu became too paronoid of Western ideal of the people being more questioning of authority or less inclined to follow the established Japanese hierarchical order that Jesuit missionaries teach. He decided to push more on Nationalistic religion like Shintoism or more Zen Buddhism that extol virtue of complete servitude and self sacrifice.
@@inisipisTVIn fact, some Buddhist sects support procreation and Shintoism allows it. The other person only exposes the Japanese point of view (or one) that is against the Western one.
And thus, Yoshiwara was born
At least they might be able to give us a season that's a dramedy about them becoming non-pillowing soulmates.
I wonder if before Ieyasu did the same before expelling christians from japan
Me watching the big battle scene :
Unless I missed it this is not a joke that happened in the books she has bought up her own land and plans to make money selling it to other brothels the church is somewhere else in the city
That makes more sense honestly given that Toranaga is still counting on the church to follow through on an important deal he’s made with them and keep the Christian lords wavering. Doesn’t make a ton of sense to insult them openly at that exact moment. Funny scene though.
And did not Christ associate with courtesans Father?
The start of the red light district.

Toranaga knows
You never want to have a building with school boys next to Catholic Church
And what’s furthest from young boys ?
Brothel and their customers !!
Teachers are more likely to go after minors than priests. In this era, the church was the one laying the foundations for Western civilization. The kids' joke is so burned, like it's the only one they know
This version of "Shogun," is just okay. Can't improve upon the original. When will Hollywood stop trying to do re-makes? It's embarassing !!
Im not a big history rat, but does this new "pleasure" dustrict soon become the Geisha district we see today? Maybe not here in this show, or even in Gin's lifetime, but from the way courtesans are classed high in society, i can only imagine that their skills would only evolve past physical pleasure and towards the more artistic and reserved style of the geiko/maiko we see now?
It's pretty much alluded to the Geisha district, yea.
Why, in this depiction of medieval Japan, are women out in the open? Discussing business plans no less?
Is he worried...or contemplating the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene?
What relationship ?
He's gonna have to live with the fact that "sin" is just a commonplace thing. Plus, I don't think he's ever seen any of those "private parties" the churches tend to have. Boy, he'd be in for a culture shock, right there.
Martin Alvito spent practically his entire life in Japan. Father Dell'Acqua smuggled him since he was a minor.
Very different to his former Lord Oda Nobunaga whose more progressive and welcoming of Western culture (like modern weaponry😅).
As if the Catholic Church during this time period wasn't also teaching complete subservience and blind obedience to itself?
That is the core of missions: expanding the Church's power and influence. Individual missionaries may believe in the "righteousness" of their work, but "saving souls" was never what the institution stood for.
@@DreamersOfRealityIn fact, they do, but if they can take advantage to obtain power or influence, they will do so. In Italy they learned that, they wanted to trust the Emperor who many times betrayed them or left them to their fate.
Fr. Martin has every reason to be concerned and dismayed. Lust is sinful and never a good way to go.
I guess if it’s little boys it’s fine then?
