The NSU Supermax (built 1958) was my first motorcycle in 1968. Unfortunately the engine died of a connecting rod bearing failure, so I had to disassemble it to install a crankshaft from another engine.
There are different crankcase ventilation systems depending on the year of manufacture, you have to keep that in mind when you assemble parts from different engines. The older crankshafts still had mud sleeves in the crank webs.
Defective connecting rod bearings were a common failure, but it is said that there were roller bearings with a reinforced bearing cage.
I found many design elements later on the HONDA CB72. The Japanese had copied many things from Germany at that time, in order to develop them further.

There is also some old Yamaha motorcycle ,that has identical front fork, and some other parts as NSU Max. I have seen 3 different crankshaft model . Somewhere I have video with all three crankshaft ,but nead to find it.

If NSU had not been acquired by VW, they could have driven it far today for the German motorcycle industry.
NSU Max 250 with overhead camshaft and pressed sheet metal frame with monologue central spring was a model for Japanese motorcycle manufacturing.
MR Honda was in Germany and learned how to do it
The first Honda motorcycles are faithful copies of the NSU Max
but the patented camshaft drive was not copied
from these beautiful NSU motorcycles from before.
From 1949 to today (71 years), Honda has manufactured over 400 million motorcycles

I worked on one of these my brother owned when I was 13 years of age. Had cylinder head off it. I am now 72 and it is just as I remembered it.
It has to be said, as someone who owned a series of NSU Prinz cars:
This company had an awkwardising (peinlich in Deutsch) department.
Once they had a brillinat design like the 250 Max developed, they sent to to the awkwardising department, who spent many months making everything difficult to work on.
This department also worked on their cars, and when VW bought them out for the K70, the deparment was sold to Citroen, who doubled the staff in it and set it to work on the GS.

No one chose hair springs as there was no room so I particularly like the head studs that dont get in the way of the hair springs, that's before we get into the double eccentric OHV, those clearance adjusters. Lets face it this is properly engineering machine, we miss you NSU, engineering perfection.

The Super Max was the primo 250 going in my area of the Midwest when I first got into motorcycling in '57. Great quality and durability but they were getting dated soon after. Looking at those valve clearance adjusters, how heavy they were compared to those of a Honda engine which would be a limiting factor for performance improvement. I recall the S20, the "scrambler" version of the Super Max, handsome, bright orange color with upswept exhaust and 19 horsepower as I recall. I suspect they were heavy handling but did have external dampers on the forks.

But if ever possible I might buy a old one just to get back good old memories The vid just needed some editing . Like what fluid you used, quality of the new bolts 12-10 stainless steel 304L or so ,Thickness of gasket (type /material) and so on for i don't suspect new ones can be bought . Thanks for the show loved it

Luckily ,I was able to buy complete engine very cheap .At this moment I'm rebuilding that engine . The reason why I bought engine is because I'm making new video of how to rebuild engine. In this video I will explain all small details . With help of one friend we ,will restore this engine in factory condition .
Engines that I rebuild earlier are not 100% factory rebuild , because I didn't have tool , knowledge and experience . I'm waiting for some new parts ,and some defective parts need machining ( camshaft drive system bushings , crankshaft oil bushing ... ) I will try to give as much information as I can ,on every step of restoration .

I dont get it how the topbolts kan stick through cylinder and then? Are they expanded boltheads or how are they tightened ?......

    • @oldtimer-Z
      @oldtimer-Z  2 роки тому +1

There are 4 special bolt that have threads on both side (both threads are from outside ) . One side of the bolt is screwed into the engine head ,and other side is connected to special nuts that are screwed in engine housing ( that nut is part of a special bolt that is screwed into the engine housing ) . It is difficult to explain . In total there are 8 special bolt and 4 special nut that connect engine housing with head . And all that goes through holes that are drilled through cylinder cooling ribs . By screwing the nuts you are pulling engine head to engine housing and pressing cylinder that is between .

Some years after this Mr.Soichiro Honda created the C 72/ CB 72.These bikes had OHC engines as well but chain driven.Same effect but much easier to produce. NSU went the wrong way.

I wouldn't say NSU went wrong way ,they went harder way . To some available information Nsu Max was for several years on top as racing motorcycle for 250 cc races . It was time of innovation and experiments , and that led to Mr.Soichiro Honda ,he just made it better . Same thing as Mazda and Wankel engine .

The mostt annoying thing is to tighten the cylinder head screws, especially the rear left one.
You did not measure the angle of the camsahft housing, which has to be level or 0.05 mm lower on the spark plug side. This is important to reduce wear on the bearings of the two pushrods. And you did not use a headgasket with aluminum ring, which has a much longer lifespan according to the non reinforced one, you used.

This was my first Max engine that I repaired, I made a few mistakes, including the one on the cylinder head (not aligning the angle on the camshaft bridge). Later I made video with restoration of another engine , where I was much smarter and more experienced .
