This is good info for general differences between 2wd and 4x4 RC cars. When you're talking specifically about the Traxxas Slash though, the QUALITY difference between the two is substantial. But when driving on dirt it was a blast. I just picked up the Infraction Arrma with a 6S Battery and that car is a beast. Not too hard to handle for it's power and no wheelies. Lol
I have a replacement servo for my slash but my stock is still ok. I don't bash it, just smaller jumps and offroad runs. That's probably why I still have my stock. I believe it's 3 years old now. It's the thicker body Dodge ram one with the high center of gravity and I got the lcg but never installed it yet.
Center diff mainly gives better adjustability. A looser center diff will give you more off-power steering and traction at the expense of on-power steering and acceleration. A tighter one will give better on-power steering and acceleration but will reduce off-power steering and reduce rear traction on power. On a high-bite surface a tight center diff won't feel any different from a center spool (no diff), while a loose one will make the car better able to turn when coasting but less able to turn while accelerating. On a low bite surface, a loose center diff will make the car significantly more controllable. Differential tuning makes DRASTIC differences in how your car handles so if you want to start tuning how your car handles you'll want to start with the diffs to get the car in the ballpark of your preferred settings and then adjust the suspension to fine-tune it and get it fully dialed in.
In my opinion i like a 2wd slash because it is cheaper and if you want more traction just lock the diff and paddle tires. My slash 2wd does great in snow with paddle tires and a diff locked up.
I think that the 2wd models are fantastic for simplicity, but my backslash (slash 4x4 buggy conversion) flies ever anything and everything and cannot be beaten in terms of performance.
Anthony Bush yes sir I mean don’t get me wrong the notorious is a destroyer of souls 😂 but I love drifting my vxl 2wd and jumping right after a nasty drift just a little more then triple backflips and front flips! I’ll never sell either of them! Got my m2c chassis and aluminum braces ready to go in the notorious just haven’t made time yet.. but I’m excited for it for sure!! 😁
I prefer 2wd all around, way more fun to drift and do wheelies. Some 4x4 do wheelies like my hoss but my 2wd slash is so fun. My 4x4 slash brushed is pretty fun everywhere but concrete and grass. My 2wd slash does wheelies and can drift on pavement, especially dirt and snow, so fun. I prefer 2wd
My 4x4 Slash primarily sits on the shelf until race day (yeah I know gimmie a break lol), my 2WD is my go to for bashing cheaper and its more fun sliding around like a goon.
For the Slash platform especially, 4x4 is the only option unless you only drive on pavement or really compact and hard dirt or really short grass. I had a 2WD and got stuck on 5 inches of grass, and since I spend part of the year just bashing in parks, the traction is so much better. And even on pavement the 4x4 prevails because of breaking. Saving a few bucks is always something to consider, but you sacrifice too much by not picking the 4x4.
The slash wasn't my first car, but I've been meaning to get one, and I didn't know whether to get the 2x4 or the 4x4. Thanks. This video ja helped a lot.
IMO it's a pretty dated platform. You could do better. If you're getting 2wd? For the same price you can get the Losi 22S SCT. Better chassis. 4WD? You could get the Arrma Senton 3S for about $100 less.
Madara Uchiha You should get the 4x4. I have the 2wd vxl and the thing gets stuck in grass. Even when I have 2 and a half in badland tires on it. 4x4 is definitely the way to go. Make sure to get the brushless as well.

I would love to see a 2WD set up that actually has four wheel brakes. I wonder if that’s something I can make work with the slash being set up the way it is with the whole modular chassis design. Probably need to find some sort of disc brake that can be attached to a cut center driveshaft, and set to the same trigger as throttle.

2wd vxl with TSM takes 2wd to another level of course still not a 4x4, but it has the capability to keep going when at times it just would not be able to without TSM , I was not a believer in the system, the hole principle behind it was totally against 2wd but once I decided to upgrade I can honestly say I have no regrets, I do have a stock slash for company and all I can say is wow
Hey, I'm just wondering about the suspension on them. The one on the left (2WD) looks to be higher and have larger suspension travel than the 4x4. If that true or just an optical illusion?
It just looks that way, they both have the same amount of travel and use the same shocks. Their chassis are setup a little different and the 2WD sits higher so it looks like it has more travel, but it doesn't. -Brett
Wanna know how to tell the difference between a 4wd and 2wd slash from the surface? Look at the rims. On basemodel 1/10 2wd slashes, there are thick 5-spoke rims while on 4wd slashes, those 5-spoke rims are cut in half and have 10 spokes.
another way to tell is by looking at where the shocks connect on the front arms, on the 2wd they screw in the middle, but on the 4wd they go right on the front of the arm
I have a 2wd Slash Rob Macachren edition with the Ram body I bought back in 2012 or 13 and I never knew this, it came with the split spoke rims that are on the 4wd.
Great video! Would love to hear your take on the age old question "Which one is faster? and which one has better acceleration all else being equal?" ;)
Hi Daryl! If all was equal (ESC, Motor & LiPo), the 2WD would have the weight and drivetrain drag advantage, possibly allowing a taller gearing without overheating. In a drag race where surface traction isn't an issue, and you can keep the 2WD front wheels down, the 2WD should win every time. Consider this; the new'er Traxxas VXL 2WD models (Rustler, Bandit, etc.) are rated for 70MPH! Traxxas has no 1/10 4X4 models that can match those speeds. -Brett
2wd all the way, KISS keep it simple stupid. here for the fun not the workload! AND RWD is more fun to drive! only a rock crawler needs 4wd the rest is 90% driver and 10% car
I have a 4wd traxxas rally car it can go damn near anywhere my other 4wd trucks can go because I raised the body so the tires wouldn’t rub the the under side of the body when compressed I drive it over gravel and up hills and it’s completely stock !

Me having both, the 2wd is fun and all on road, but if you want a more controllable more capable car, go with the 4x4, and if you have a 4x4 and want a 2wd, just take the center drive shaft out and your basically there
I love both, but i love the challenge of Driving a 2wd. Yes, it takes more skill. So especially if youre planning to do comp. Racing, you should start with a 2wd., because you will get more skill, and if youre then Driving 4wd, you will be faster with both than if you would start with 4wd..
I have a slash 2wd and a UDR. The slash is always an easy fix. Takes no times to fix and its gentle on my wallet... 4x4 and 2wd are 2 different things, thwy dont drive and react the same way. I also think it takes more time to learn how to drive a 2wd then a 4x4. The 2wd always want to fish taill, learning trottle control is key.
The reason most 2WD "fishtail" is because of unbalanced weight. With all 4WD vehicles, the motor is between the front & rear driveshafts, thus helping to keep the front/rear weight better balanced. Most 2WD vehicles (with the exception of buggies) have the motor behind the rear driveshafts, thus giving a rear-weight bias, which leads to the aforementioned "fishtailing"...simple physics.
Lol. I use to race mini T's about 10 years ago. Throttle control on vary fast rc's is key. Without knowing that you can dump, it flip it or wreck it badly. Now I can say from racing them and now having a 4x4 slash. 4x4 react completely different. In some ways I like 2wd and others I like 4x4. One thing people forget to say. When they try to say people that have 4x4 can't drive rc are wrong on. Is that they do tend to dump easier. Due to the extra grip. Witch comes back to what you said. Throttle control.
Four wheel drive for traction, two wheel drive for action! Lol!😀

It's the thicker body Dodge ram one with the high center of gravity and I got the lcg but never installed it yet.
Loved this video. It explained a lot and helped me with making a decision on which platform to buy as a newbie to RC cars. Thanks lads.
Great series, perfect for beginners. Would love to see your thoughts on how center differentials affect performance.
Well in my experience the center differential makes the car handle better at high speeds, it also makes it much more controllable over all
Center diff mainly gives better adjustability.
I have a 4wd and it is insane. I could not imagine just having a 2wd.
Mine is 2wd it really works well the point is it doesn't matter if you have a 2wd or 4wd the car always depends on you not the transmission
I like 2wd for the skill it takes. The fun for me is in the 4x4. I love doing side wheelies
2wd with a gyroscope can keep up with 4wd on the dirt just fine
For some reason I like 2wd rc’s over 4x4. I especially like all of the 2wd Traxxas cars
I think that the 2wd models are fantastic for simplicity, but my backslash (slash 4x4 buggy conversion) flies ever anything and everything and cannot be beaten in terms of performance.
My #1 rc to drive is my slash 2wd. I enjoy it more then my 4wd rc’s. But my notorious is a lot of fun, I just love my 2wd a little more!
Better then the Notorious? I got the Notorious and the 2wd slash as well
Anthony Bush yes sir I mean don’t get me wrong the notorious is a destroyer of souls 😂 but I love drifting my vxl 2wd and jumping right after a nasty drift just a little more then triple backflips and front flips!
2wd takes more skill to drive 🤣
Yes
What about tsm?
@@standardheat-fs8159 for the less skilled
Taco Seller tsm is for people that are afraid of spinning out I have a 2wd slash and its insane
Jake Dawg I put a 3s lipo in a 2wd I blew the motor
Just get both and for the 2WD slash get stiffer springs for the front. Makes a HUGE difference in handling!
My 4x4 Slash primarily sits on the shelf until race day (yeah I know gimmie a break lol), my 2WD is my go to for bashing cheaper and its more fun sliding around like a goon.
Helpful comment
I bash my 4x4 and race it
For the Slash platform especially, 4x4 is the only option unless you only drive on pavement or really compact and hard dirt or really short grass.
Oh they're great, super fun and stupidly durable lol, and parts support is absolutely unbeatable!
Madara Uchiha You should get the 4x4. I have the 2wd vxl and the thing gets stuck in grass. Even when I have 2 and a half in badland tires on it. 4x4 is definitely the way to go. Make sure to get the brushless as well.
@@crazycamkalani How is a traxxas model "durable"? They don't have high quality plastics or aluminum.
@@Cardiakk bruh when bashing plastic is a better form to go you want flexibility over stiffness that aluminum or metal offers. If you hit a rock off a jump or on road that Ridgid metal will bend you ain't fixing that money wasted on looking pretty. But to each there own
If you have WINTER where you live a rwd slash with sand paddles and 3d printed skies upfront looks hella fun
I’ve owned several of both 2wd and 4x4 models and if you’re considering the two I would always go with a 4x4. For the most part they’re better in most situations
Better to have and not need then to need and not have.
Such a good breakdown. Thanks for this.
I was debating on what one to get and now because of this I’m gonna go with the VXL 2wd
I have a summit 1 16 from 2013 4wd

Excellent videos. Keep the great work up.
i got both 2wd's and 4wd's. I just love driving the 2wd with paddle tires in the winter, feels like driving a volvo 240
Facts on facts. I like it. 👏👏
I have a ecx torment 4x4 brushless and a 2wd slash VXL. Both are fun but I wish I had just gotten a slash 4x4 as there’s more parts than the torment. The torment has the worst designed front bumper. Bottom pops out all the time. Next will be a bandit VXL or other buggy. I love RC
dsadsa dsadas If you’re into in door carpet racing try a losi buggy. That is next on my rc list.
The ECX stuff is absolute trash
I have the 2wd and it’s honestly amazing
I do as well. I race mine and recently won in the A main at my local track. It was crazy close between me and a buddy in his slash. Only beat him by 2 seconds.
Good job explaining the difference!
I just want to pop wheelies race my friends and take it to the skate park? Should I get a 2wd? When me and my friends race it’d either be on asphalt or concrete
I personally chose the 2wd because it is a lot simpler than the 4wd platform
I have the 4x4 slash with hobbywing 8 motor and esc with 17mm wheels, so much fun drifting it with belted tires
had two 4wd slash's in the past(one full stock, one built) and currently a full built 2wd with long travel and i prefer the 2wd all day long.
Is there any different in battery life between 4wd and 2wd?
@@PhoenixStarks392 no theyre traxxas batteries. i upgraded batteries.
All i can say is if you’re worried about cost in an rc car you need a new hobby. Maybe finger painting or knitting? I have 3 of the worst/best/expensive hobbies, Rc cars, drones and air planes. But i never complain or question cost because i knew what i was getting myself into. On the other end great video showing the pros and cons i was considering getting a 2wd slash to beaf up and make a drag racing slash 😂
2 wheel drive does great wheelies 4x4 goes anywhere i have both
Allso the 2wheel is super easy to work on
Which one do you like better
@@wakkyd7460 the 4x4 is great for racing and at the track but if things break its a beach to fix the 2wheel is super easy to keep working and cheaper to repair. But i guess i would go with 4x4
@@206beastman okay thanks I think I'm going to get the 2wd cause its cheaper is 2wd fast
Michael Mack can u tell me which one is better in ur opinion I just got in to rc and I don’t race or drive and I have a lot of grass and snow so can u tell me which one is better for both of those
Thanks for the information you presented. It was very helpful for one that is looking into this as a hobby.
Great info dude! Big like! thanks mate :)
Axles are what power each tire from the diff. Driveshaft is the center power input to each diff. but we'll put
Me taking off the rear Axles to make my rc front wheel drive 😂
Turn it into a Real Honda
I can do that?🤣🤣
Super well-made, informational video. Thanks!
i think even with rc a tire rotation every 10 runs would be beneficial for even wear on tread
Excellent info and presentation as always Brett. I have both a 2wd Slash and a 4wd Slash. They do drive very differently. I can't decide which I like more. I advise getting both. Fancy pen clicking instead of table bongos --- interesting musical variation.
Thanks Brett. great stuff
Thank you teaching me more about two drive and 4x4, thinking of getting a 4x4. But what I've learned a two drive will give me the same fun.but a difference in where the area I'm playing and the cost of maintaining the 4x4 and just two drive
I have the 4x4 and I have bashed it for years. I also have the brushless Stampede 2wd and I love pulling wheelies with it.
I really like my 2wd Slash, never broke on me even if really abused!!! Bash it like you've stealed it!
Thanks this video helped me alot
As someone who drives mainly off road, grass, dirt, gravel, hills etc. 4WD is a must.
@@z9m1x8 That's understandable. :)

Awesome Channel just subscribed and bought a 2 wheel drive Traxxas rustler for my boy
I broke a steering block right away but after upgrading to the alloy ones the cars is so durable and tough it's pretty amazing,it's a great buy.
another great videos, thank you much
Haha I currently have the 2WD and can't wait to upgrade to the 4WD. The traction is insane on the 4WD. The 2WD is fun for now though! 🤣
RC Sharks the legendary crew shark from Instagram 💪
Got both and they are great
Great video!

@@AMain_Hobbies So interesting! Thank you!
A guy at a hobby rc center store told me that the two-wheel drive brakes more then the four-wheel drive is this true
2WD is my favorite. I only have 4WD on my Scale Crawler. 😁
Your 2 WD will stuck when you go to a little rock
I have the 2wd slash but it has been sitting for months but it is fun to drive.
4x4 all the way 👍👍
i HAVE A Slash 2wd with gool rc brushless kit. I am so happy whitch this thing
2wd takes 10 times more skill
Dont need to be good when you're lucky. I just love how insane the 2wd is in urban environments. Mine is full on retarded. 4000kv 3660 on 3s. 🤪🤪
I have a 2 WD drive Rustler right now, but i'm most likely going to buy a Rustler 4x4 soon, as i love how it looks and drives🔥
The Rustler 4X4 looks pretty sweet!

@@AMain_Hobbies yup! I love it😎
I prefer 4wd over 2wd but 2wd can be fun too
4x4 is best, 2wd are wild on 3s. I just got my daughters old stampede back up and running went from brushed to vxl, it’s insane now on 3s. How’s the 313? Raining today in the 814. ✌️
@@AverageRCBasher ya bro its raining here today too, which sux cus I wanted to do a bash video
I agree 4wd all the way
Mhm I have a 2 wheel drive there very fun driving doing donuts at things I love it great vid!
Call me crazy but every time he mentions the 2wd he shifts to the 4wd rc and vise-versa
Thank you for the 3 minute explanation on what 2 vs 4 wheel drive means.
But with TSM engaged the 2 wheel drive in proper hands will deliver some amazing performance!
bro i feel like a god driving my new slash with tsm compared to my granite lol
This is why I want to exchange my senton is it that much better to have the tsm real real tho
My 2wd buggy taught me how to throttle control. With a 4wd car you can just gas it but you can learn throttle control on a 4wd too
I have a slash 2wd and a UDR.
Dang Lawrence, well said. I couldn't agree with you more on learning throttle control with a 2WD. Great comment.
-Brett
4x4 way better i got one last week and its fun to use
y is the 2 wheel drive front shocks bigger
gray gregerson weight is in back so it pushes the front up and back, down
The four-wheel-drive slash is far superior In every way
One hint... the 2wd has 5 spoke wheels
Oh shoot! You got me.
-Brett
they both have 5 spoked wheels lol, the 4wd has split-spoke design
