I Paid $224 for a BROKEN PS4 Pro Death Stranding - I Was Disappointed - The listing was for a broken/for parts console from eBay but no indication of what was wrong with it. After some testing I found it had the blue light of death (BLOD) but when I opened it up there was nothing obviously wrong so I'm guessing the problem is something with the APU chip. Since I have a working PS4 Pro motherboard sitting around I decided to put it in and see if that would work. Not a very practical fix but at least I was able to get it working.

About This Video: I bought a broken PS4 Pro Death Stranding edition for $224 from eBay. No real indication what was wrong with it, just being sold for parts, but the box had an "inspected by Best Buy" sticker so this might have been a customer return or from a salvage lot. Unfortunately, when I got to testing it had the blue light of death (BLOD). Once I opened it up there was nothing obviously wrong so I'm guessing the problem is something with the APU chip. Luckily, I happen to have a working PS4 Pro motherboard sitting around so I decided to put it in and see if that would work. @Shay Darby Love it!

I liked the video, but here are my two cents: This was basically a case swap, right? Would have loved to see how to do it in a more detailed way.
Anyway, great video as always. Maybe the next time you can just as a experiment try a reflow of the broken board?
@@michellefernandez3155 you weren't paying attention obviously. It was a mobo swap.
@@meechp123 both, actually.
But thanks for the mansplaining lol
Always the perfect amount of thermal paste.
Slluuuuurp
1:13 The auction listing did say "The item may be missing some parts or components" so you might have anticipated the HDD being missing.
Yep, you're right.
Also, if the eBay seller had gotten this from a Best Buy auction, I know some auction places remove hard drives from electronics to avoid any personal info/data from the original owner being taken.
or easy cash.
ebay auctions must be specific, you can't be vague or else, Ebay will automatically side with the buyer. Parts missing could be as little as screws. But something as major as the hdd must be listed in the description.

I have to admit, I started to get a little scared at first when you paused short of the perfect amount of thermal paste. I was like "Nooooo! What is he doing?!" I should have known it was just for the lols. I apologize for doubting you.
He actually scrapes most of it back off afterwards, off-camera. 😜

It's so lame how these things cost so much, but when it comes to it, it's nothing but the plastic shell that makes it "special". Companies deliberately do not make easy to replace shells because of this. It's why MS stopped with the faceplates, and why Nintendo did the same with their swappable 3DS shells. They make loads of money on these special editions that are really the exact same thing with a different box.

Hey, belated thanks for your great advice on replacing PS4 Pro disc drive. Cleaned out bucketloads of dust too, and now runs like a dream!
The thermal paste thing doesn't get old ;D
Going to fix my son's RC car this weekend by replacing the necessity of an expensive 8.4 V battery pack with 7 single AA battery slots.
Love that you showed the actual listing so we see what we all can expect from the console.
My heart almost skipped a beat... But then you put the remaining of the thermal paste.
Just the right amount of satisfaction. Thanks, Steve!
definitely a "Death" and maybe still stranding PS4
Ha, ha...true!
Love your videos. Always learning something new 👍
Awesome, thank you!
Dude you are a beast at fixing these I’m really impressed.
Beautiful console, never seen one of those before.
Gotta be one of the best looking special editions
I hadn't seen them either but I'm always on eBay so when I saw it I knew I needed it!
My personal favourites are the Days of Play Slim (the blue one) or the 500 Million Pro (see-through blue).
I have a fear of soldering. In school we was learning to solder. I was using the soldering iron and dropped but by reflex I tried to catch it and caught the wrong end. I smelt my skin burning. It took almost 2 years to heal completely and 2 operations.
It took me a few seconds to let go as it didn't hurt. It's 20 years later and still have a a fear of them
Understandable
I love that you reply to manny comments! Its so kind of you! Waiting for the 7... ps4 crack, acidentally updated it after waiting for a long time, then I will crack it and hopefully it will be usefull again.
Thanks for the videos!

As usual great vid! Glad ya had a spare mobo sitting around, though I do hope you contacted the seller and got a partial refund for the missing HDD and cover.

Why not get sponsorship from the people who make your electric screwdriver?
I like this idea. And point
1) I show iFixit tools in my videos...especially when they're sponsoring the video.
2) The "people" who I got my electric screwdriver from would be myself...I bought a bunch so I can stock them in my online store.
What is the electric screwdriver called can't find it in the link to your tools

I do have one question actually. I reflow ps4 apus all the time. Would you say in your professional opinion that it's a reliable repair option when the issue is actually with the solder balls below the chip? I generally have around 80% success rate on reflows but I've had a couple of people tell me they don't last (only ever had one warranty return to date though)
Another banger Steve! Thanks for making my day or let's say, evening. Have a nice weekend and stay safe!! Btw the motherboard switch came in clutch! 💪🏼🔥
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!

Nice audible and good video!
I just recently subscribed to your Channel because I was trying to fix like 3 PS4 controllers and it helped significantly unfortunately I can't say the same thing for my PS4 optical drive but hey it's all working progress right thanks for teaching me man
i have seen where excessive heat paste will cause weird things because paste with a conductive property like artic silver can get in there by the little resistors around the cpu.. and cause weird lock up/ reboots.. i would have cleaned around the cpu a bit more and used a little less paste when reapplying.. but none the less another great video.. thanks for sharing.
SUCCESS!!!! 🤩 great fix, it's good to have resourcefulness as a skill
Wow! You are edging closer and closer to 1m subs! Very cool.
I wonder if the thermal paste running gag will ever get old! :D
love seeing the perfect amount of thermal paste used : )
That special edition controller is quite valuable last I saw it was over 100 bucks by itself
I know! I wish this one came with the controller!

Hello, love your channel, kudos to you!
I’ve cleaned my ps4 pro bunch of times by now, and rarely used the blu ray drive. I’ve had to use it recently and have come across an issue where it loads the drive, but have massive lags whilst loading the disk. Would that be drive issue? Can it be the cable connecting the drive? Any insight would be highly appreciated! Have a great day!
Gabor
Its nice to see Sony lets you swap internals like that now I wanna say the ps3 didn't let you do that as easily but I've stepped away from fixing systems and mainly do controllers altho I did see an xbox one x for 75 with no display that was super tempting
The Slim and Pro don't have married disc drives...the originals do
I dont own ps4... i dont fix electronics... im not even interested..... but I subscribed and watch this channel. I really dont know why lol.
I guess I just love how honest and down to earth this guy is. Keep up the good work!!!!
Oh nice! Are we posting again on Fridays or is this a one time deal? I generally get the most time to watch these Fridays, but im certainly not the majority.
Fridays...I tried Sundays and it worked fine but I think Fridays are better for me and viewers too.
Great job!
I find your videos oddly calming 😆
Great Job!! You are a little genius!!!
@TronicsFix I have a problem with my left joycon, wonder if you can suggest a fix. Recently I've noticed that the click (when you click it down) is activating on the slightest touch of the stick, which is making some games hard to play. Just move the stick gently and it registers something like 4-5 clicks in one go. I thought it was a bad stick so bought a replacement and fitted it but this is the same. The slightest touch and it registers as many clicks.
Thanks to your videos, I recently changed the PSU in my original PS4.
I thought it could be BLOD, but luckily after watching one of your videos, I was 99% it was the PSU.
Thanks.
Once again the perfect amount of thermal paste, how you get it right every time I'll never know.
Wow ur channel is going up! Keep up!

@@Tronicsfix last time I checked ur like 550k ...now ur 700k ...on a roll

Thank you! Thanks for watching.
Have you thought about a DJI Mavic Mini fix? I crashed mine the other day and the ribbon cable broke. Seems a pretty common problem but I can't see many fix videos online - I would certainly love to see one!
Once you have collected around 5 MoBo's like this one Steve, I would mix up some Flux with IPA and then apply it to the suspect chip whilst the MoBo is upright, so that it can flow amongst the balls of solder, make sure when you do it, some flux leaks through the bottom, then rotate the MoBo and repeat, allow some time for the IPA to evaporate away and then with the hottest setting and lowest airflow to your heat gun, evenly apply heat so that the flux boils out from underneath for around 2 to 3 seconds.
WARNING
I fixed my Onkyo Receiver around 4 years ago, So it may not work with a larger chip, but hey what have you to lose?
Just make sure you mask around the chip with Kapton good and proper, in fact I sort of fashioned a funnel with it "The Kapton Tape"..
nice save on a beautiful case.
The thermalpaste..everytime a smile :)
I would say its relatively safe to rinse totally in ipa or even distilled water. I've cleaned some smoker home mother boards under the tap even and they've remained complaint free so far.
I did a coin battery change on one of these and it came back to life... I also use "Goo Gone" to get sticker/label glue residue off cases, etc.
You know what...I love your video's so much❤👍🙏
Tronics! When you make a reballing or reflow? I wait for that video! Cheeeers
reflow does not work on ps4s.
You should do a video on reflowing the board or replacing the solder joints
reflow does not work on ps4s.
TronicsFix, the thermal paste legend!
I love the thermopaste part every time it gets me
lol I was thinking "at least it would be a good shell for another ps4 pro or a good chassis to mount a spare board in", when you came up with a spare board, I would call it a repair as you have a good working system in the end.
Watching you apply thermal paste give me so much anxiety. I have been using the same tube of thermal paste for years!!! GODDDDDDD DAMMITTTT
Best way to make the most money out of it. Sometimes you can just get a little bit more money for a special edition than the standard.
The only advise I have to give is the amount of thermal paste. The thermal paste is only to fill the surface roughness of chip and cooler. If the layer is too thick, it can even work as an isolator.
Eg Noctua does have really good youtube instructions how to apply themal paste.
Is this some kind of really advanced covert satire?
@@SteveDice21 no just an advice how to improve it

I have a limited edition CoD WWII PS4 slim that I got from a family member that won’t turn on at all. All cables I’ve used are fine, no beep no nothing, do you have a video on something like that?
Great video btw!
Hi, which alchol is used for cleaning a electronic? 99 % rubbing alchol or isorophic alchol?
I have this same machine model! 🤔 going to go watch now!

Once again the Perfect amount of Thermal paste saves the Day !!
I would comment on thermal grease application but it was perfect amount
Heres to Steve! You brilliant bloke you. Heck yeah perfect amount of thermal paste.
Sees the video length is 8:12 --- thinks this is going to be a breeze for Steve.... or it's going to be a cluster. Either way, entertainment for me. This was a good fix for keeping a special edition console going. Good job!
Great! Saw the whole video
Really appreciate that!
That's what I did with my PS4 Slim, I spilt paint all over the case, and literally had to buy a new case (sony official) to match the actual one. Unfortunately due to that (the fact that I took off the "do not remove" sticker, I am unable to trade the console in at all due to the fact that I had to replace the top and bottom plastic case...BUT, I reckon I could colour mod the case itself as well as the controllers itself to gold or silver!
Love ur videos
I take it that the power button was fine, then?
Glad to see that cockroach-infested PS4 Pro (I'm assuming from the other video you did?) being put to good use. A limited-edition console with different internal organs can still sell at a premium, I presume?
An ultra sonic cleaner would help you out quite a bit in these situations.
6:33 my heart stopped, so tense moment.
HI man, can you do a guide to fix the yellow light problem on the controller? :)
Re-balling some chips isn't that hard, especially the smaller ones with the slightly larger solder balls. Is that a particularly difficult chip to re-ball, and does re-balling it actually fix the machine?
I didn't think the perfect amount of thermal paste existed , until now...
Someone stepped on my ps4 slim and the disk drive would make a horrible grinding noise. Had to fix it myself... with no iFixit kit. Wish I knew about your videos before repairing it, and I wish I had any of the correct screwdrivers to do it!
Gloves? I'd recommend a Haz-Mat suit for that motherboard!
I would never pay that much for a broken ps4🤦♂️
If you have the spare parts to fix it why not , if its not broken and a easy fix even better, chance you take 😉
True but its is a difference betwen € and $
@@StellarPrism That expensive even in Germany? Dam, always think those in US pays way to much for broken electronics.
In Sweden broken consoles sales for 200-250 SEK (19-24 EUR) I just bought 4 XboX one S for 499SEK (48 EUR). Problem is that refurbish/used in good condition I might be able to sell them for 100 EUR so after removing those that I can't fix and adding cost for spare parts there is not much of an profit to make. Perhaps I should start selling them in Germany ;)
It was crazy expensive considering it didn't work and was even missing the HDD. The seller even knew all that, considering the item description. But then again, since it did sell, it was worth it for the seller to try to ask for such a price. It should have been at least 100 dollars less. I'm quite often surprised by the prices of used consoles in the USA, watching these videos. Maybe my corner of the world worships brand new, ununsed stuff too much, who knows.
He's always been terrible at buying tbh.
Quick question are the ps4 pro motherboards not paired with the daughter board of the bluray drive?
