It truly had more to do with the shift from Independence to conferences. Notre Dame lost the Miami (Big East) and Penn State (Big Ten) rivalries due to scheduling conflicts far more than politics/posturing. Those two things simply make for a better story....
This was the game where I knew Rick Meier would be a bust. His foot work, arm strength, and decision making against a top quality opponent was average at best.
@@matthewcarey3148 Powlus too! His injury in 1993 allowed McDougal to assume the starter role without much competition. No way ND competes for the 1993 title/beats Florida State with Powlus at QB. He held them back in 1995 and 1996 too. The 1995 team was especially loaded with talent but the offense/team lacked that extra gear. Powlus did nothing against Northwestern and Ohio State (0 TDs combined, sub 250 yards passing in both games) that year. Krug probably as well or better against Florida State in the Orange Bowl than Powlus would have. Ridiculous that Rocket Ismail lost the Heisman to Ty Detmer lol.
Along with George Rogers over Hugh Green and Jason White over Larry Fitzgerald, one of the biggest snubs in college football history
@@cityofchamps66 don't forget Paul Hornung over Jim Brown in 1956
Eric “Sleeping with” Bieniemy deserved it over both
Ismail had only 6 touchdowns that year. 6!

Ty Detmer won that Heisman the first game of the season when BYU upset Miami

Just you
Facemasks too. You see a lot of offensive linemen wearing 2-bar these days, but in this game some of the running backs are wearing full cages
Beating Miami when they were good was very satisfying. It's not same now.
Damn Conley’s fumble was huge…
As was Culver’s on the first play and Rickie Watters’ later…so?
I don’t care what ANYONE says, Rocket Ishmael was the greatest player to ever wear a Notre Dame uniform.

I agree. Most exciting in college. Robbed of the Heisman

That offside hurt UM early giving that 3pt

So many turnovers for Miami
ND punked out of the series. Took away alot of fun for both fanbases

Yeah, punked out with a win.

If a frog had wings...
There only one problem, the canes done shit in the second half

Not his best day but he scrambled well and played just well enough to win.
Mirer was an odd choice for holtz. Didn’t really fit his offense.
