My Buffs played the Vols to a tie in the first game of that season and would go on to beat Notre Dame (10 - 9) in the Orange Bowl, but any of these three teams could have been national champions, that year. College football is awesome!
Colorado actually had to face Chuck Webb, who was an amazing RB for UT. However, he blew his knee out the very next game vs. Pacific. I think Webb could have been the difference for UT in their tie vs. Auburn, and losses to Alabama and Notre Dame. This was an excellent UT team, but kind of underachieved that year...
It was a joke Colorado "won" the national championship that year. They had a loss, a tie, had a game given to them On 5th down, & a controversial win in the Orange Bowl
Yeah, he was only there for a year...transferred. He was buried on the RB depth chart. He was a great RB too. But look at who was ahead of him....ND WAS LOADED!!!!!!!
That's a strong statement, given the rich and lengthy history of college football. I would rate Minnesota-Pittsburgh (1934), Notre Dame-Army (1946), Pittsburgh-Fordham (1937), Nebraska-Oklahoma (1971) and Carlisle-Harvard (1911) above this one, easily. However, this game was a very good game with a dramatic finish, and incredibly enjoyable to re-watch.
This Tennessee team was a great one, no doubt! But had a few breaks gone a little differently, then they could have been National Champions. Missed a last second FG vs Auburn in a tie game, lost to Bama on the last play, and then had Notre Dame on the ropes until that INT at 46:24. What if Chuck Webb hadn't gotten hurt?
@@mongoslade277 Could you imagine a team playing Tennessee's schedule that year? 4 Top Ten teams and an Ole Miss team that came out of nowhere to challenge for the SEC Championship, and an Alabama team that had a great finish after and 0-3 start.
@@tmarsh0307 No way. They couldn't schedule like that today with the playoff ramifications. Rocky Top finally caught a break destroying Florida 45-3 that year. The Vols had an excellent team. Too bad that half back got hurt
Rick Mirer hated throwing to his 6' 7" tight end Derek Brown. Derek ran a 4.4 40 and could catch almost anything. I don't know what Mirer's problem was but it was simple incompetence not to throw to Brown 10 to 15 times a game
I had forgotten about this classic. It's amazing how much talent both teams had, on both sides of the ball.
God I hate being a Notre Dame fan. Barring a couple few and far between games in the modern era I have to look 30 years back just to witness greatness
Loved this game. Despite the loss this was a great game to attend.
Say what you want about the Irish, back then they coulda filled a 500,000 seat stadium
And they usually rolled on everyone's A$$es breaking the hearts of precious fans.
Dude this was not at South Bend
Thought #25 should have won the Heisman that year.
....that old turf at Tennessee was brutal
Rip Rodney Culver
And DuBose, Jurko, Dre Smith....
I'm forgetting some...I know.
Man ND had so serious talent under Holtz they could go up against anybody and win those games GO IRISH 🍀🏈
...except against Miami ...🙌
Götterdämmerung - Notre Dame and Miami have played each other 26 times, and the Irish hold the series lead 18-7-1.
Navi ...and..?
Götterdämmerung - and your teams sucks and could never hold a candle to our irish 🤣🍀
...like your mom..?
Good ole days for my guys from South Bend!!
Back to back CBS Saturday thrillers (this was one week after the famous Georgia Tech/Virginia game)
I have both of those games on VHS
ND under Holtz was like Bama under Saban.
Ehhhh
Not really. Saban has multiple titles and dominant seasons while Holtz only has one title.
Totally agree great comparison!!! Checkout my youtube channel BUCKEYE VINNIE, please watch my videos and subscribe to my channel thanks.

It's not awesome anymore. Only 4 or 5 programs can even sniff a chance a championship now.

How many NFL pros did the Irish have on special teams? Wow.
A freshman Jerome Bettis was on kick off coverage.
My first ND game
My third. The gold foam finger the leprechaun ran around with was mine. I got it from the 89 Miami game, my first sadly lol

42:07 and he ran at the area my Dad and I were sitting
