So great to see a talk about fine and curly hair. I try not to use heat on it but the front is so hard to style! With my hairline thinning I just have felt so unattractive, and generally I'm not. But bad hair can ruin your entire look. Thank you for the advice.

My hair is fine and thin and if I don’t wash my hair every other day, my scalp gets itchy and my hair starts to shed. I also need heat to make sure the structure of my frizzy, slightly kinky hair lays smoothly. My hair is not being damaged more from using heat tools! Whoever made up this myth never studied hair structure and never quantified what temp was actually going to destroy fine hair. Using a moderate heat, I get the results I need! Don’t be afraid to use heat! Use a heat protector and lower heat and I promise you’ll get the looks you want!
This has been intuitive to me and I’m so happy someone is on here saying it!!!!

P.S. On day 5 I use dry shampoo and oil on the ends to get through the last 2 days. I am 70 years old, I get some compliments on my hair when it is curled, but have struggled with it since it got damaged by a hairdresser 2 years ago. I have a new hairdresser who is better and more agreeable to what I ask her to do to not damage my hair.

*Volumizing Shampoo & Hard Water* . I used volumizing shampoos under very hard water conditions for years, the combo wreaked absolute havoc on my hair. My mids and ends were dry, dull and breakage prone. Adding a shower filter and switching to professional shampoo and conditioner has made a huge difference. I wear my hair wavy and typically only diffuse at the roots.

Thanks for a great video honestly breaking down all of the “noise” we are subjected to. At 72 years young, my hair has definitely thinned out and changed. Only takes me about 1/2 the time to blow dry than it used to. I had previously heard that the volumizing products often dry out hair and clog pores. Glad you reaffirmed this. I will definitely check out those products you recommend. Love your channel, your knowledge and your honesty. Be well!

I agree about "volumizing" shampoos and conditioners. I used Redkin Volume Injection shampoo and conditioner that was recommended for fine hair by a different UA-camr and my hair was never so dry, flyaway, and static clingy! I wasn't sure it was the shampoo and conditioner at first, so I had to stop using each product I was using (a super time-consuming and aggravating experience!) until I finally figured out it was them. Also, the shampoo has salicylic acid in it, which is an ingredient in acne medications that causes the skin to dry and peel (exfoliate) and that I have a sensitivity to. No wonder my scalp was so itchy!!

Great advice! I have naturally curly fine hair. Since I've been retired and do very little to my hair, only washing once a week, the condition is very good. I don't use a lot of product and only really style my hair maybe once a week. I straightened my hair for the first time in over a year and was amazed how good it looked. I used liquid minoxidil for over 20 years and it worked well, but it made my hair very dry. Now I use oral minoxidil and my hair has grown almost 6 inches in 8 months. I'm almost 65 and I have the hair of someone in their 30's. Plus I have a good diet putting collagen and lots of protein in my morning smoothie. Thanks for the great tips!

I personally could never get a strong enough curl with a hot iron, it would always lose curl in a couple hours. But I do get great results with overnight heatless curls. They last for days. And recently been using big sexy hair powder play. Game changer! Love the volume and soaks up oils and sweat so I can go a few more days between washes. Also light light lightly oiling the ends after styling polishes off the style.

As a liscensed stylist....i have very thin fine hair. I wash my hair everyday, i have to. I have way to oily of scalp. I find i would lose hair if i didnt wash it....but everyones hair is different. I lighten my hair every three weeks(i have platinum blonde hair) i am very careful. I never apply lightener to alreadyy lighten area, meaning i do my highlights with only painting the roots carefully...most people think my hair is thick, because i mastered the styling. I reccomend heat and i like it hot! I do like the tourmaline, ect dryers. They give fullness. Another tip, do not over brush your hair when its thin,it only flattens it. I do keep my hair length right below my chin. I love dry shamppo, but i useit as a styling aide, never as a shampoo. It gives my hair fluff and thickness and some hairspray, with a tad of spray shine( helps detangle, but just a tiny bit, in the spray form) i have to say my blonde hair is very healthy and shiny looking(even without spray shine) i brush carefully when wet...take care of it....i baby it😊

I use niacinamide meant for skincare on my scalp. It cuts the oil production on my very fine oily hair. I also use willow bark products from Germany for this. Bleach ruins my delicate hair so I keep my natural colour and use curl cream to encourage my slight natural wave, also have very short bangs I love that cuts away the front thin perimeter and makes it look much thicker. The rest is long. Love it.

@greenknitter your hair is a different texture than mine....I can tell by your description of your hair. I've been a stylist for 28 yrs. Not to many people have hair like mine. It sucks...literally! But I learned early how to maximize it! I can see where products which u mentioned would help with wavy hair. I need a little damage to change the texture of my hair, but still have it healthy enough where, I can maintain shine(which is difficult on blonde hair) and keep it attached to my head😁. I can't play around with color(like, going back and forth from blonde to brown, ect on mine), like others, buts that's OK. I look best with my hair just below my chin or a pixie( also the older u get, at least for my face, keeping it short , gives the appearance ofl lifting it upward) I feel more youthful at 47! I have always had a style to my hair! I'm not a wash and go, with flat hair, kind of girl😄 I love, makeup, good fashion, and stylish hair....sometimes I wish I was just a plain jane🤣

I have both thin and fine hair. I wash my hair once a week before washing. Before I shampoo I will comb/brush it. I usually wear it in a messy ponytail for work...I know hair ties can break your hair. Obviously I'm not using product or heat. But I do bleach it about 3 or 4 times a year to accommodate my use of semi permanent "bright" colors, see my profile pic for example. I do deep conditioning treatments regularly so as to minimize the damage from 8:40 8:40 8:40 8:40 bleach. Even without the added damage my hair has always had the ability to create tangles almost as soon as I brush them out. Even tho I use conditioner. And yes I only brush my hair dry and I use either my detangler comb (wide spaced curved tynes that alternate) or my oval shaped paddle type brush. I've been taking care of my hair for about 50yrs so I learned long ago to start at the bottom and work my way up. Now that we have covered all the bases what
I'm wondering is if it is better to brush my hair daily or not. Sometimes I think that I'm brushing out more hair doing it daily rather than weekly.
Basically I want to know the pros and cons of each practice. Appreciate your advice.
Also I enjoy your videos because you do a lot about thin fine hair. ❤❤

My hair is fairly naturally curly but is difficult to manage like that, so I get my hair done every week to save time. It's done in 1 hour. My hair is a few inches past the shoulder. I ask her to use medium blow dryer heat, 1" curling iron on 300 and use a good humidity resistant shower cap from Amazon to retain curls during humidity and get out of the humid bathroom. I also take my own products: Matrix Biolage Hydrasource shampoo, Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm, Hydrasource Leave-in conditioner, Heat Protectant, It's a 10 Styling Serum and oil on the ends. These curls last for 2-4 days depending on when I brush them out. I also use a Wet Brush to minimize breakage and that helps a LOT.

I also use a method of application that’s best for me. Written direction on the bottle aren’t best for all. I would love to see a video on how to help refresh a style on day 2 hair. I can go to day 3 before my hair really needs to be shampooed, but on day 2 I have either a bit of frizz, some wonky waves, curls or flips from sleeping on it. I try to limit using heat tools on it between shampoos, but would like to hear your thoughts on refreshing the style without causing too much damage. I use a leave in conditioner that has heat protection when I style after washing. I know I need to reapply heat protection if I am restyling, but am never sure how much to apply, and whether I need to let that dry before applying the dryer, curling iron, or flat iré on. I have fine, wavy hair. I used to have a lot of hair, bit that is changing post menopause. On wash day I struggle with rough drying to 80% because that then causes frizz. But I do use a microfiber towel to really get as much moisture out before I start using the blow dryer.

I have long curly hair that is also fairly thin, which is masked by the optical illusion of the curls. I have been trying over the last 1-2 years to improve my hair thickness and get it to grow longer( faster than I have to trim the ends, lol) and have had great success with collagen and glucosamine/ chondroitin supplements and the baking soda scrubs I do 1 or 2 times a month! I just keep a little jar of baking soda by the shower, grab some in one hand and shampoo in the other, mash them together and wash my hair with it! Be careful on the ends where it's fragile or skip them. Concentrate on the scalp, exfoliating the scalp will absolutely encourage new hair growth because you're unblocking the follicle. I didn't realize how powerful this really was until one of my clients( I'm a dog groomer) started essentially exfoliating her Pom with a slicker brush every day, and all the hair she'd lost( which was MOST of it😳) ALL GREW BACK!!!! In 3 months! I was STUNNED! Groomers see double coated breeds all the time that never grow hair back right after being shaved or get patchy n thin as they age, and there's never been a solution for this, even from the vets- well hallelujah, THAT was the solution! Exfoliation!!! Getting all that dead skin, dirt, oil, etc off the hair follicles and the the hair starts growing! So I started exfoliating with the baking soda( which my hair dresser had suggested to pull the product buildup off my hair) and I saw a HUGE difference! After 6 months, my hair had grown 3 times the rate that it had been growing! You just have to be diligent after the baking soda wash and shampoo it a couple times with a moisturizing shampoo and use a really good conditioner ( I use Its a 10 Mask) because the baking soda will dry it out. The other thing that works wonders is coconut oil! Again, I had a client with a poodle that lost ALL his hair down BOTH sides of his body- I mean BALD! She dpent a couple grand at 4 different vets and he was still bald. This was over about 1-2 years. Then she decided to start giving him coconut oil( feeding) and rubbing it into his skin, like a hot oil treatment. Not only did all his hair grow back, it was 3 times as thick as the rest of it and DARK! He was a chocolate color, but super faded from age, but the new growth was REALLY deep chocolate!!! It was crazy how well it worked! I had my 80 year old mom start doing it and it helped her too!😂❤❤❤

Thank you. I have had fine, thin, straight hair all my life. It was easier to style it when young as it had more flexability than it does now. Since Covid, I lost lots of hair and still seem to lose more than I'd like. I dont like short hair on myself and its too fine and thin for long hair, besides im old now. Im 68 and just beginning to see some gray strands. Everyone always says, it's too silky, you have to damage your hair to be able to do anything with it. I think to myself, they sell all these products to correct damage, yet I'm told I need to damage it. Thank you for agreeing with me. Damaging hair would only make it worse. The way to not have damaged hair like mine is to keep it trimmed. I can't use conditioner, it weighs it down too much, even if just used on the tips, i really dont need it. I don't have oily hair, yet my own oils condition my hair if not washed too often. I use volumizing or thickening shampoo and do not wash it but a couple times a week, sometimes less, It depends what I'm doing, where I'm going, and on the climate. If it feels dirty, i wash it. Yes its true, after awhile products can seem to build up. I do use a max hold hairspray to keep hair out of my eyes as its thiner at the hairline and falls in my face and looks unkept. I use heat to dry my hair, upside down, but it doesn't take but a couple minutes to dry. I haven't had much style my whole life as it's been about impossible. Many have not known how to handle hair like mine. True story, think only one person seemed to get it and she retired long ago. I dont take meds and am not good with hair, so I don't mess with it much. Love your videos.

Sorry I won’t be able to join or participate in the thin hair styling as my work is super busy this time of the year. I am looking forward to seeing all the other ladies, who will be participating and how you willhelp them with their hair issues.😊

Heat is not the devil as everyone thinks. People think this because in the past they were often taught bad practices or they didn't know how to use tools properly so hair got very damaged. These days we know how to better care for hair, and using heat RESPONSIBLY is not only ok, it is often better for hair styling as you have pointed out. Temperature, heat protectant, proper technique, and proper hair care are the keys to not damaging hair with hot tools and blow dryers 💇‍♀💇‍♂

Yes! I made the mistake of trying thickening and volumizing products and a lot of them made my baby fine hair worse! I went back to moisturizing products for fine hair and that works much better. Also, the less I wash it, the better it looks so I just put it up in a loose clip on days it's not so presentable. Also, I have much healthier hair since I stopped blow drying it. Although if I really want a "big hair" day, I will blow dry it.

My hairdresser always comments on the beautiful condition of my hair. I rarely use heat and I air-dry my hair as much as possible.
The most I wash my hair is every other day, sometimes much less. I also will just wash the hair framing my face if the lengths still feel clean. Although, needless to say really, I need to wash it more often in the summer.
Lastly, I'm severely allergic to chemical dyes, so I use natural henna and indigo. The colour is a lovely natural auburn/chestnut (depending on ratio) and it's good for my hair and scalp.
I'm not good at styling my hair, so I need a good cut so that it falls nicely. (I'm lucky to have fine straight hair for that, not so much for when I want curls etc.)

I am 81. My hair has always been fine, but I had a lot of it plus I have curl in it, which gave it a lot of body suddenly it was like it was not growing. It seemed to have short hairs longer hairs. It was just not my hair anymore. Very depressing, I have to have it wet or it will not blow out and get all that freeze out. I am just at the point of crying today. I got a haircut and she just made a mess out of it. It really looked pretty about six months ago. I don’t know what happened every time I go it looks different. I’ve tried so many hairdressers and they do not know what they’re doing, always neat and it was so important to me. I have always been very conscious about how I look. I was very tiny and still am of course the weight has shifted which is natural with age. I had a Revlon hairdryer which I used for eight years and then it decided to break I really liked it and I forgot to write down the style and I cannot, find one that doing like it should the air is too hot and I don’t like that on my hair but I have to have heat. I also have to use some gel. The curl that I have is around the sides and some in the back but flat on top no one wants that, but I don’t want to put perm in my fragile hair plus I do have a little bit of dermatitis so I can’t win for losing. I saw the expensive hairdryer, how do they work? I’ve ordered two more Revlon and I’m sending them back to Amazon and they just get too hot. I just don’t know what to do. I’m at my wits and I’m just having a bad day. I’ll just give anything if you could come see me and take care of my hair.😢 where do you live? I can’t travel because I have chronic back problems so it’s just one thing after another. I had her cut back a little shorter and whatever she did I did have a Bob. It is now a mess. The sides are crooked. The back has some long some short and I just bragged about how good she was and then all of a sudden it all changed. I live in West Columbia, South Carolina. I would love just love to have a makeover. Nothing would make me happier. I can’t go out. I can’t shower. I can’t do anything I just want my hair to look good, explain to me how that hair dryer works. Do you know anyone near West Columbia, South Carolina that you can recommend. just love your videos and how you care about women and their hair you’re very special thank you

I stopped coloring/bleaching about 5 years ago. That helped A LOT. I not only have thin, fine hair, but I have a scar (kicked by a horse) also some alopecia (my daddy deployed to Vietnam when I was two-very stressful) So, I wash my hair every third day, and stretch it with dry shampoo whenever I can. I use a conditioner only on the ends, and use a heat protector. I scrunch and use a diffuser. (This is the part where I unabashedly promote the Laifen hair dryer-not sponsored.) That was absolutely the best purchase I have ever made. I do use some hairspray, and can use a few spritzes of water the next day or to to bring the wave/curl back to life. I don’t have a perfect or neat style, because I’m mostly retired, but do have a small hobby farm just outside of Hot Springs, Arkansas. My hair fits my personal style, so I just go with it. Justin, LOVE your channel! It is so informative and I learn so much. Hope everyone has a happy and healthy 2024! (Did I mention that I’m on a Nutrafol diet? Yeah! When you have thin fine hair, you have to use heat on it, or you'll be wondering why everybody's hair looks better than yours. I'm a model in NYC who did no heat for 3 years. I looked frizzy, unkempt and a mess, until I finally used heat on my hair at the end of the 3 years and finally looked put together again. All 3 years did nothing to heal my hair, it genuinely looked so much worse without heat styling.

What you say makes sense actually. I’ve had times where mine looked healthier and more put together with heat . It’s hard having fine , flat hair . Mine gets stringy and tangles so easily. I can brush my hair and it will look so gorgeous. And then within 30 minutes, it is a stringy, tangled mess. Sometimes when I flat iron it or put some sort of style in it, the stringiness is much less noticeable. At least I have natural highlights from the sun because I work outside and when it gets stringy , the highlights show more. 🤣🤣

The best thing I ever did for my very fine hair was cut baby bangs and leave the rest long and naturally wavy. It disguises a slightly thinning menopausal hairline, quite high forehead and thin front perimeter of hair, and suits my artistic nature. Cutting that hair so short makes it the thickest it can be. Shampoo and conditioner for aging or oily hair is what I use, never volumising which never works anyway for me.
It takes 5 minutes to blow dry with a heat protectant and curl cream, then some oil on the ends when dry and that's it. Best hair I've ever had at 56.

I fell into the heat-is-bad-for-my-thin-hair thinking, until a stylist I found 4 years ago told me with my hair texture, I need to use a flat iron on maximum heat. She was right! When I leave the salon after a cut, my hair is so shiny with lots of movement. She would finish my hair with a flat iron on maximum heat. When I adopted this practice, my hair is so soft and shiny, with lots of movement. My style also lasts, which means I’m only using my flat iron once or twice a week. The heat is required to seal the cuticle.

By the way, (my apologies for not checking beforehand if this has already been addressed in any of your videos) do you know if a healthy whole food plant based diet has negative impact on hair? While the rest of my health is much better since eating this way (and it also is my preferred way for etical and ecological reasons), my hair seems to worsen (breaking more, thinner, more white hairs) lately. Of course I'm also not getting younger, have thyroid issues and have struggled with mental health lately.......so food is maybe the last reason, still I wonder.

I have fine, fluffy hair. I hate it too short. I wash daily or every other. I don’t use products, just finger style, let air dry. I’m not sure what to do for a haircut. I have it maybe shoulder length and slightly layered. I want it to look nice for my daughter’s wedding next fall.

I agree with advice , luckily I’ve been doing it mostly right. I kind of figured it out back a while. I just go minimal with the heat and I use large Velcro rollers for volume and just kind of keep it there.

My hair is fine, but thick. Lots of sources seem to assume than fine and thin go together, so interpretation gets interesting!

Curling iron a spritz of hairspray on the wrapped hair on the iron. It gives me more volume and the curls last longer. Aqua Net purple can lol yeah i know

Thanks for clearing up this issue. I take it since you didn't include heated rollers in your video, you consider them a negative, since heat is constantly applied to the same section of hair for 10 minutes or more.

I have very fine strands and once had high density, now at 65, it’s medium density. Could be worse, I guess. Do you think collagen supplements work? I shampoo every 3 days and alternate between volumizing, detoxifying, and purple formulas to mitigate buildup. Good or bad strategy? Also, my hair is just above my shoulders now and one of my greatest challenges, is my hair tangles easily, especially when I use texture spray. Love the way texture spray makes my hair look, but, I can’t brush it out without some breakage. Do you have any suggestions?

I don’t trust all supplements in general BUT, I do notice that when I take collagen protein, my hair grows faster (along with my nails). I think it’s like anything, it can work as long as the product isn’t junk. As for your routine with shampoo. That could work as long as the purple/blue shampoo is a cleanser. In some cases they aren’t.

I've been using a high quality collagen powder every day in my coffee for, gosh, probably over a year (2 years? I'm terrible with time!) and I noticed about 2-3 months after starting it I had little sprouts growing in. I wasn't sure if they were breakage at first, but my stylist confirmed it was new growth! I believe my hair loss was caused by menopause and extreme on-going work stress (healthcare worker during covid), although I haven't gone to a dermatologist for a professional diagnosis. In my opinion, I think that a high quality collagen supplement helps, but is not a cure-all. You still have to eat a good, high protein, high vegetable diet and avoid stress or find ways to deal with it (nature walks are great!), and hair loss due to age can only be helped so much. I don't eat a lot of collagen containing food, so I think it's especially helpful for people like me. I notice I will lose hair still, especially after a bout with extreme stress, but I think the collagen is helping to mitigate the effects. Another definite bonus is that both my husband and I noticed our joints feel better since we started taking it. Hope my personal experience as a stranger in internet land 😅 helps you with your decision... good luck!

So I am 50 and have almost grown out my gray hair. It's a little more dry. Anyway I find if wash blow dry then flat iron my style will last 3-4 days with dry shampoo on the 2-3rd day. So for me more heat makes my style last longer.

You’re absolutely correct. It depends on a few factors (product, oil production, climate etc) but hair is like a metal. Heat it up and it becomes pliable, cool it down and it locks itself into shape. If you have a good foundation of the right product, heat it up and give it bend, then lock that bend in by cooling it down. You’ve got a solid shape. After that, keep the oil out of the scalp and your hair out of humidity, it’ll last longer (as you’re seeing).

Quick question about not conditioning near the roots. Especially around my hairline, I have some damage from highlights and heat styling. I feel like this delicate hair needs conditioning. No? Thank you! I’m learning a lot.

Great video! If I don’t use heat and let air dry, my hair is flat and lifeless! With heat, my volume and style holds.

I have very fine hair that I wash and condition everyday. If I don't it lays flat. My hair doesn't fall out I keep it fairly short. It's not about what you do on the outside if you eat right and are healthy you'll have healthy hair too. I don't use products on my hair and most of the time just air dry it.

Life is too short not to use heat. Never used heat for years and didn’t feel good about the way I looked. Yes heat protection

Ever since I watched the Blowout Professor talk about how silly the whole “dry your hair until it’s X percent dry” thing is, it frustrates me like crazy when I hear other people say it, especially professionals. Like what is 60/70/80% dry mean?? It used to confuse me so much because I’d either rough dry too much or too little, but after he explained that you should stop rough drying your hair when it starts to get frizzy, then move on to styling, just made so much more sense to me. Sorry it’s just become one of those pet hates of mine 😂

    • @justinhickox

I can understand that. My wife likes to explain it where it doesn't feel wet but cold...not really sure what that means but to her it makes sense. lol She has straight hair so it doesn't get frizzy.

My understanding was that thickening products add a layer of said product(s) on the hair to make it feel thicker. Also, if a person has a set number of hair follicles, how can thickening products make more hair grow? Wouldn't you need more follicles for that? If my understanding doesn't fail me, the rate at which hair grows depends on factors like age, genetics, hormones, diets, etc.. How would thickening products make hair grow faster?
