Made sense. My hair is very thin and fine and has been most of my life. It's hereditary. I'm 50 now and it's thinner than ever. I'm worried if I add layera on top it'll just make my ends look worse. My hair is about an inch or 2 past my shoulders and I don't really want it amu shorter want it any shorter.
I agree with everything you said. I retired from doing hair a few years ago.. I do miss it.. I laughed when you said trying to explain to people that fine is the texture and thin is the amount. I would try to explain that to people, and they looked at me like I was crazy. Then I would use myself, for example.. I have fine natural curly hair. They would argue with me that my hair look very thick, which it isn't very think. So I let them feel my hair and it shocked them that I don't have a lot of hair. But the curls and the way I dry it makes it look thinker.. my problem is and always has been frizzy hair. I've used everything.. i also live in MO where we have a high percentage of humidity, which helps my hair to friz.. I would love your opinion on fine natural curly hair... thanks again for all your videos.
As a person who has fine, thin hair, I couldn't agree more with your assessment! You always do an awesome job of explaining why certain styles work or don't work. ❤
In my experience I feel that a shaggy bob it's not a great looking haircut not everybody can wear it you have to be young and beautiful just like the picture you showed I'm just a retired hairdresser I love your attitude I just can't help but comment and let you know how great you are the fact that you don't pull no punches and you don't drag things out

First of all, thank you for clarifying that the Wolf Cut IS the Shag! I kept thinking that but thought maybe something was slightly different. Nope. Just society wanting to sound "cool". 😎 And thank you immensely for sharing that the Shag is not good for this hair type. I've always thought growing up that the Shag was for the cool girls, and I can't pull off "that" cool. And you blushed. That was funny!!
Hey! You're so welcome! Glad I could shed some clarity on that all! Yeah, Find so many "new" hairstyles are literally just different names for old styles. In some cases the style is slightly modified but not always. I'm also sure you're more than cool enough to wear a shag, even if your hair doesn't think so. :)
@@justinhickox 🤣On the inside....oh, yea, totally!!! 😆 I remember Dionna saying she thought the short funky cut was cool .... I think her and I have that same "we think we have the inner cool" that we'd always be too scared to pull off externally.
*Lob vs. Wolf Cut, fine Low Density 2B wavy* . I wore an A-line bob with bangs for nearly a decade, then Menopause hit. My hair was a wreak and I was experiencing loss at the hairline around my face. I grew out my bangs (slow and awkward process), worthwhile in the end. I did a DIY wolf cut and it looked super cute as I was embracing my 2B waves and avoiding heat styling. My hair was getting healthier. (all this over a course of years, not months) At a certain length, mid chest, the look fell apart. My ends looked like a fan brush, my waves wouldn't hold. I chopped off 4 inches and went to collar bone length with a bit of face framing. This is my happy place. I have a strong base line and can still use a claw clip when I want everything out of my face. My hairline is now regaining ground with new growth thanks to scalp serums, and use of better quality products. The next cut will definitely be don by a Pro as I don't have the dexterity for blending. I do know my "happy length" and that is a battle won in my book.
@cvonsutphen - Thank you for your response! I have been trying to grow my bangs out, but then they really start annoying me and I end up getting them trimmed. A vicious cycle. I really admire your perseverance!
I wish you could cut my hair! I've never had a cut where I walked out loving it. That's why I just wear it long. I have very natural wavy and ultra frizz so I flat iron. I have a lot of hair still but pretty sure texture is fine. One length looks triangle but layers look choppy and bad. 52 and haven't found a solution!
Plz, plz, plz, plz, pleeeeeeeeze, do a video about the best cuts & styles for women over 60 with "big hair." By big hair, I mean lots of natural body. My authentic hair color is platinum silver (per my hair dresser), combo wavy/curly, moderate texture, & moderate thickness. Lately, I am wearing it shoulder length. While my husband loves it this length, I am beginning to hate it because it is so difficult to manage. At my age, wild & crazy hair looks haggy. Definitely NOT the looks I'm going for! I love your show! Hope you can help!❤
I spent 20 minutes arguing with a stylist about this. I know my hair, I know my face shape, I know what looks good on me & works for my hair, and I knew exactly what I wanted. I wanted to keep my hair long with extra layers in the front and on top. He insisted on long layers (and more layers on the bottom). I said no. He kept saying the style I wanted would look outdated, and I said not if you know what you’re doing because I know how my hair lays. We argued for quite a while when he finally relented and said he would cut it how I wanted. I wear glasses so I could not actually see what he was doing in the mirror. He went ahead and did long layers anyway, thinking I would like the end result once he was done, and it looked terrible. I had lost most of my hair due to disease and spent years growing it back out, just for it to be ruined. I cried for days.
The way you described the wolf cut aka shag has convinced me to give it a try. I always knew I should wear the sides shorter because of thinness for more volume but thought I only had two choices -- pixie or inverted bob.
I tried the wolf cut and had to turn it into bob. It got to choppy and thin at the bottom. Blunt bob with a few layers and bangs always works best. Shoulder length. No longer.
I have very fine thin hair and up until yesterday I had a blunt angled bob. I decided the angle with the slightly longer front length made it look thinner, as Justin says .Now it's one length and looks much thicker.
I ended up with an inverted bob last time. Texturized to death. Looks like a confused style to me, long in the front and too short in the back. Craziest hairstyle I've had in a long time soooo...growing it out. Fun
I'm so sorry to hear that. Not fun at all. Hope to grows out quickly for you. It also may work to take the front shorter and have it cut into a less dramatic bob. That may not be the style you're going for but sometimes getting it cut into an actual style that works can help people deal with the grow out process.
I’m 64 & have worn some sort of Bob since the 80’s. Having thin, fine and now white hair I have few to no other options. I can switch things up with bangs or parting on the side or middle. I’m currently growing out my bangs and honestly now have “curtain” bangs but it’s just another bull@$& name for long bangs….I’d rather just shave my head!
Been watching your videos and love your advice, I’m 59, I do have thin hair and my hair has always been straight and fine. I had PCOS before menopause, but I used Nioxin for a few years and it helped. But now I can’t find a hairstyle that works for my hair. All the hairdressers I go to just want to either cut it super short (which I hate and makes me look masculine) or they do all the layering/styles you talk about in this video. I just can’t find a stylist who knows what to do and make me feel like I have nice hair again. I wish I could have you cut my hair.
Thank you for the information. It would be nice to learn about the curly hair specially the blond because i have natural small curly and frizzy hair and it's such a pain every morning.
I tried the lob and the a-line without layers, and neither were great because of my thin, fine front hairs! Thanks for the validation! Also, the flip at the shoulder-yes! It was on point in late 90’s and early 2000’s, but I didn’t know why my hair was good at it. Thanks for explaining! And while the shag could be my best friend theoretically, I think it’s kind of ugly still. And my natural straight hair would make me look like the brunette from Three’s Company! 😅
I'm struggling with what to do with my hair next. I was leaning to a shag style, and I think something similar has worked well for me in the past. I have lost a lot of hair with aging. My hair is curly, not thick and curly but closer to fine and curly now. I've chopped it myself because so few hairdressers get my curls right, but I think I need professional help now!
The best thing is to avoid all layering. I grew my fine hair to over my breasts. And it's mb 2mm longer in back. Took me long time to get my hair back. Stopped letting haut stylists tell me what they thought. I hydrated front ends a lot to stop breakage. Using osmos as conditioner, used monat bond support shampoo or revive and then osmo deep moisture crème as conditiner. Sometimes I keep it in for a few hours. After I wash out conditioner I use monat air-dry. It doesn't weigh down my hair. Lasts 3 days until I wash next time..osmo product also not weighing me down..I became expert in my own hair and now ppl compliment and think I got extensions. My hair looks thicker as mostly one length with a few mm shorter in front..but I know what works..
To give a different perspective, layering has been the best thing that’s happend to my hair. However, I’ve always had healthy hair and a lot of it, although it’s very fine. But since it’s absolutely straight and falls flat (and I can’t be bothered to curl it very often) it looked quite boring for my relatively round face. Been loving layers since I first got them as they add some movement and interest. In the end it’s a matter of personal preference🫶🏼
My stylists did a shoulder length bob with basically no layers and it doesnt work on me at all! Its way to heavy and absolutely doesnt work for my face shape. I text her within a week and said i cant do this hairstyle because its way to heavy and very unflatering! She knows i need layers and like it shorter so i am not to sure what she was thinking that day. She normally does a fantastic job with my bayalage and cut. I normally let her take control of my cut and color so i was a little surprised with what i ended up with. Btw my hair isnt thin its just fine and alot of it.
Hi @justinhickox ! Thanks again for your information. I have applied for the thin, fine hair makeover you emailed several weeks ago. Is there any chance I’m being considered for this opportunity? I’m trying to NOT get a haircut, in case this is possible. Otherwise, I need to get a trim locally. 😊 Thanks! Judy.
Very helpful! I have thin and fine hair. I'm 61 now and my slightly longer than shoulder length hair looks sad, if you get what I mean. I've been wanting to try a shaggy pixie. I think it will look cute and spunky. I now realize it may really work for me. No longer just a wish. I would love to take off a few years from my appearance especially since twice now I've been mistaken for the mother of two different friends! How humiliating!!! My hair is S&P but come on! I've smooth skin and granted, I don't wear cosmetics often but wow.
I just chopped my hair into a shaggy long pixie and it looks fantastic. I look like I have three times as much hair! I found a terrific stylist who cut it perfectly. It is also surprisingly versatile, I can do different looks and it is really fun! Just my experience.
I’m 59 with fine hair(but been told lots of it). I’m finding if I grow out to shoulder length I look older (hang dog) I call it 🤷♀️. I’m loving a chin length bob with bangs and a little texture. I call it my happy hair. I love the look of a shag, but all issues Justin mentioned!
I love the lob look or the wolf cut- I have thick curly/wavy hair/ it’s not as thick as it once was, but I still have more hair than a lot of women my age. Is it possible to have one of these cuts successfully done with wavy/curly hair? BYW- I blow dry my hair and round brush it but do so in a way that makes it appear thicker on the sides.. because I have a longer thin face
Sorry it seems that way. There are tons of things that will work. Good news, I'm starting a series this year where I do makeovers on subscribers from my channel. There will be al lot with thin fine hair (actually my first one, that video will be coming out in a few weeks has thin/fine hair). Hopefully you'll be able to get better insight as to what options work really well for thin/fine hair.
@@justinhickox I'll watch for it, thank you! Thin, fine, straight hair (professionally and beautifully colored) - I'd like to keep length in-between chin to shoulder length. I do put my hair back in a tiny bun or pony tail for yoga, workouts and hiking therefore going shorter does not work if I want to secure it away from my face and neck. Barely into my 50's and struggling with it, especially since my face is more narrow with delicate features and a long neck. Oh - and there's a cowlick right on the back of my crown...my 'halo'!! :)
@@justinhickoxVery much looking forward to this, Justin. I’m 73, with thin, fine hair exacerbated by blood pressure drugs. Going in for a cut and some layering to help my hair look fuller and hopefully thicker next week. I’ve got to get it off or just resting on my shoulders as it is quite long now.
Can you do a video on thick hair and what to do with it? I am 47 and I do not like my thick hair. I can't seem to find a stylist who knows how to thin or layer it so I don't look like a mushroom if I go too short and it feels so heavy when it's long. Last time I asked to get it thinned they said it would look too wispy, so now it's just heavy, thick, and shapeless. I have seen you have a lot of videos on thin hair but not thick hair.
Justin can you please tell me what to do with my thin fine hair. I have a round face and it gray in the temples only. I don’t want to color my gray. But I’d like to blend it through out my head. Can you please help me. ❤
My hair has been falling out and thinning since I lost my son 9 months ago. I have been taking collagen and biotin but it doesn’t seem to be helping. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you
My hair is so fine. I get caught in the Mom hair cuts and as a stylist, it frustrates me so bad. I usually will give a disconnected cut whereas the top has more layering than bottom.
I’ve had some really good cuts and some horrendous ones, the last time I had my hair cut was almost 3 years ago, now it’s almost at my waist but so thin due to stress! I want it cut sometimes, then I think oooh nope, I don’t want to regret it, but being an older woman with almost white hair that curls into ringlets I look rather stupid now. It’s a never ending debate
My hair was growing out a beautiful silver color. I do have Hashimoto autoimmune disease so I go through phases were it falls out. Everyone said it is absolutely impossible but my hair started growing out brown again. I hate it! I just want to shave it off.
I wish I could send you a picture of me and have you tell me what haircut would look good on me. I want to look younger. I was asked by the cashier tonight if I should get the senior discount!? 😢I’m 59. Maybe that does qualify me as a senior?
As someone who has fine hair with seasonal hair loss I saw the thumbnail and felt a bit personally attacked haha however, I’ve watched this video and it’s very informative. Also you’re a great communicator. Thank you!
I was under the impression that a blunt Bob cut was the best way to make thin fine hair (had all my life🤦🏽♀️) look the most voluminous…. And layers would make it Look even thinner

😊 Thanks! Judy.
How do we find a hairdresser like you, where we live ?
It made sense!!! Thank you ❤
My growing out pixie went from mullet to wolf cut. It’s sort of a wolf mullet. Trying to trust the process and not cut it off
Very helpful!
You should try a pixie and wear some red lipstick 💄. You'll feel like a million dollars. I look older with long hair ❤
It seems as though nothing works for thin, fine medium length hair and even more so if over 50.
@@justinhickox....great news. Can't wait 😊
Thanks for all of your videos! Can a medium length shag be achieved with fine, thin and extremely STRAIGHT hair?
How can I send you a picture and ask for your help
If you're talking about submitting photos for my "hair Mistakes" series, there's a link in the description where you can do that.
@@justinhickox Can you suggest me a hair style?
My hair has been falling out and thinning since I lost my son 9 months ago. I have been taking collagen and biotin but it doesn’t seem to be helping. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you
Minoxidil topically in addition to what you are doing internally
First, I am so very sorry about your son. Stress can really take a toll on your body and your hair.
Thank You... I have thin and fine hair
So that’s my problem. Thank you now I know why I never get the look I have wanted. ❤😮
Excellent explanation !
Thank you! Glad it made sense.
Omg!!!!😂😂😂😂😂50 Shades of Grey ! …love it!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you Justin!
You're so welcome!
Can Insuggested mote hairstyles for curly hair? All these examples are pin straight hair.
My hair was growing out a beautiful silver color. I do have Hashimoto autoimmune disease so I go through phases were it falls out. Everyone said it is absolutely impossible but my hair started growing out brown again. I hate it! I just want to shave it off.
Love your research which is useful😍
Awesome video., very helpful for me!!!.. I appreciate you SO much! …my guy!!! 💜💜💜thank you!!!
Do a video on thin, fine, perfectly straight hair
Another great video with great tips! Thanks! 😀
I already hate my hair and have for so very long now.. I seriously need your help
I wish I could send you a picture of me and have you tell me what haircut would look good on me. I want to look younger. I was asked by the cashier tonight if I should get the senior discount!? 😢I’m 59. Maybe that does qualify me as a senior?
I have thick long hair at 70. It’s curly too. What can I do?
Love it yes everything you say makes sense
Thank you!
I love Angeled haircuts
That was helpful for me👍👍👍
😂😂😂 another great video, thanks, Justin!😊
Oh wow - I love the color and cut of the photo at 4:09. :)
What about a cub cut ?
The Struggle is so real!!
Love how you explain this on the lob would you explain how you would layer it?? For fine or thin hair Thank you Justin
Oh, you’re adorable, Justin! And you make great videos!
And layers would make it
Look even thinner
I figured out no front layering in the last year
This video confirms I've got the right stylist. He's doing all the things you advocate for thin/fine hair wearing bobs.
Totally makes sense
I had to rewatch the 1st one. First impression was that you didn't want layering in the front. And past videos you are all about layering
LOL"fifty shades of grey"!! Love the wolf cut. Could ya give some advice on the short razored wolf cut please. Like my hair is irritating it's part curly wavy and straight thanks to my mix of relatives lol
The rule says " when you are in a hole, stop digging " 😅😅😅
Hahaha! I’m amazing at digging! lol!
All I can say is THANK GOODNESS FOR SOME NATURAL BODY/CURL. Otherwise, I’d look bald!
What if I have thin/fine hair that is incredibly dense?
If it's incredibly dense then it isn't thin hair.
@@penelope5500 The individual strands are very fine. Thanks for your comment
Fine is the texture of each hair, thin is the amount of hair so if your hair is dense, then you have a lot of fine hair
@@juliannerogers5283 thanks, that's what I always believed.
Fine, thin, receding at temples, curly. I am beyond help. Fried bangs to cover temples, rest in ponytail. Yesh. WELCOME TO AGE 70. 😂
The wolf cut looks so bad 😮. But I’m sure someone could pull it off.
My young granddaughters!
My problem is my hair is curly...
❤️❤️❤️
lol…..”Fifty Shades of Gray”
Right! LOL
❤
You just said no layers in the front and then literally two minutes later say don’t do a long bob…i.e. no layers. 😂😂😂 🤦🏼♀️
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!! I'm sure Dionna thinks your 50 shades of cute!!
I enjoy your videos and actually, I learned some really good tips. Thank you! 🙂 However, if all possible could you please not talk so fast as if you're trying to rush through your video in order to eat dinner, again......thank you for sharing 🙃
