Love this type of video. I’m 52 and have wavy fine hair but lots of it. What type of bob do you recommend? I live on the Gold Coast Australia and going to get my hair done soon. Thanks
Just turned 64 and have let my hair go to my natural gray which surprisingly came in silver. After menopause I now have curly hair. I tried the Ouai hair oil you suggested and it is a game changer. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of hair and hair products.
You and Professor Blow Out are my trusted sources for all things HAIR. Thank you for providing solid and well researched information. Always look forward to your blogs!
Same! Each hair is coarser, curler and appears like I have more hair than when I was a little younger. But, I actually have at least 25% less hair. Age and thyroid (over and underactive) do so much damage. Especially after 50 or so.
Love this format, Justin!…you and Dionna are going to take over UA-cam with this husband and wife team!..Dionna, thank you for asking all the important questions for us mature, some more than others, I will be 68 in July😂😂, women!!!…Great tips and great advice as always!!!!…much love and appreciation to you both!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜
Hi Justin! I'm a dark natural blonde who quit lightening her hair during the pandemic. Blonde hair is SO DELICATE and I now baby my hair. It's thinner in diameter and I have lost some through menopause and started Minoxidil about 6 months ago. I also use New Wash and combine that with a purple shampoo to get the oil out for about half my shampoos. Dr Mary Claire put in words everything I've been going through in my 40's and early 50's. I'll be 55 in about 2 weeks and I'm starting to feel great again. Also, your addressing the topic of the menopausal woman and how this affects everything about her hair, and consequently, her entire outlook is SO APPRECIATED. Product lines like Boom Beauty and Jones Road are finally focusing on the older woman. We are NOT aging like our mothers, thank goodness. 60 is the new 40, or something like that!
I'm so happy that you've been getting something good from these videos. Dr. Haver is amazing, I'm so glad you found her. Thank you so much for your support, Karen. 60 is the new 40!
Great video. I love that you are talking how our hair changes. I had fine, straight hair most of my life and now it's wavy and frizzy! Could you do a video on caring for gray hair? I thought allowing my hair to go natural would make it more low maintenance but boy was I wrong! I have no regrets but it's definitely not what I expected. Especially the texture change. That is the most challenging for me.
I’m 70 next year and have definitely noticed changes in my skin and hair in the last five years. I have natural blonde hair, but as it’s darkened overtime, I added some highlights. I’ve done this myself for nearly 28 years. My hair is down to my hips and wavy. A couple of years ago I added a couple layers myself… I’ve cut my own hair nearly all my life. I finally got sick of scraggly ends and funky color and went to a stylist in April. She added a few low lights and cut about a foot of length off and cut two long layers. My hair went completely curly! She said I had a ton of hair! I do like the look of the shorter length (my bestie said I look like a model ha ha) but it is more challenging to put up. The shortest layer falls just below my shoulders, mid layer, just below the collarbone and the longest layer just above the bra strap. I wear my hair up 90% of the time because I work from home. I use low suds shampoo and only wash two days a week. I have never used conditioner on my scalp. Even with hip length hair, I have never had tangles. Most of my life I had very oily hair and skin… No more. I use argon oil on the very ends after I wash. When my hair is dry, I use about a dime size of squalene oil and very lightly run it through the mid and ends of my hair. I now use a diffuser for my curls. I put my hair up in a silk scrunchie at night. The day after I wash my hair it goes from bouncy curls to soft curls which I love. I think it takes some trial and error to figure out what works. I learned that a good stylist can bring out the best in your hair. Finding the right stylist is key. It’s expensive so not everyone can afford to go regularly. Finding a stylist who will work with you and give you tips for the interim is helpful. Watching videos with people you trust and respect like the both of you is also very helpful. I appreciate the conversations and the professional information you give us Justin❤❤
A Teacher, his Teacher Assistant and the many students listening intently. I loved this conversational format 👍🏻 I can't stand to go more than 2 days without shampooing even using dry/texturizing shampoo. I have used a silk pillowcase for years. You know what I hate about it ?? Seeing spots on it in the morning from my skincare since I'm a side sleeper. With 90% of what you listed as a cause of texture change, I nodded my head, that's my problem! I believe my 2 biggest problems are age (74) and color treating every 12 weeks. It used to be every 6 but since my grey is now blending in more with the blonde, I am able to extend the time between those appts.
Thank you so much! I'm glad this resonated with you. I understand the skincare spots on the pillow. That's a tough one. I'm so glad you liked the conversational format of this! Thank you for that feedback!
Everything makes sense. Stress really was a big factor for me, especially when menopause anxiety kicked in, but I am doing much better overall and I am loving my salt & pepper strands. Satin/silk pillowcases have also been very helpful!
Thank you for making this! It's so interesting and validating. I hadn't noticed the diameter of each hair had gotten smaller, but they have! I'm a wavy/curly with about 30% gray and I do let it air dry, but I'm lucky in that I'm self employed and work from home, so I have the ability to just work and not touch it for 4+ hours. 😄
Hi Justin and Deanna. Greetings from the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand. I am coming up 72 with greying blond hair. I have fine curly hair but I have lot of it. I started to shed a lot of hair about 6 months ago and was quite concerned as I don’t colour my hair, use blow dryers and only wash my hair twice a week and it’s always air dried. I watched your video a couple ago and was interested in your comments about leave in conditioner. Wow what a game changer! I wash my hair, lightly condition and then apply the leave in conditioner, a very small bit of curl cream and then let it air dry. The leave in conditioner keeps the curl in until the next wash, my hair doesn’t feel dry and doesn’t go into the frizz for the next couple of days. Just within a very short period of time my hair shedding has dropped considerably and stays curly and soft until the next wash. Thanks so much! Love your hiking videos but think about coming down to NZ, views that don’t suck are around every corner. Best wishes. Diane.
Your comment "wash your scalp, condition your hair", really hit home! I too loved the suds but that comment helps me understand a bit more. What are your thoughts on bar shampoos and conditioners? I tried them once and couldn't get the suds I wanted but now I might rethink. Your thoughts??
I just tried the bar shampoo and conditioner and i like the shampoo, but feel like with the bar conditioner, i cant seem to get enough conditioner on my hair.
I've always had thinner hair in diameter, but a lot of it. It doesn't need to get any thinner. I condition it daily. I haven't colored it in awhile. I exercise a lot. I'm 59. I think I'm older than your beautiful wife. I make it darker, not lighter. I'm hypothyroid and have a skin disorder, so I use a prescription shampoo. The tips are nice.
Oh boy! Getting old(er) sure is time consuming and expensive. I can say that cuz I'm over 60 and going broke from all the things I spend money on to combat the changes! 🤦🏻♀️
@@pattyd725 yes, I'm 53, my hair is natural and suddenly dull, falling out, etc. In my 20ies I literally used the Volume shampoo of Pantene abd my hair was shining like a mirror. Now I need to put several products on, professional shampoo etc and they hardly ever shine like that. Adding moisture --> ✓ , but shine still lacking. Nourishment -->✓ , but shine still lacking.....
I am 58, I really hate this aging hair. I am doing my best with it because I will always have long hair, and I don’t wash it as often as I used to and it still feels dry and just weird. For me it really began looking and feeling different at age 54. 😩 Ugh.
Just found your (y’all’s) channel. TY, YT. I’ll definitely be changing my hair care routine. I stopped washing my hair every day after ~50 (before was every day because of oiliness). Now will go 2-3 days, often using dry shampoo or updo. So, topical minoxidil wouldn’t work for me because it needs to be used every day for maximum effectiveness. However, a very low dose of oral minoxidil was like taking a miracle pill. I have the best dermatologist!! (Mixodil was originally a BP med that was found to have the side effect of hair growth so then developed as a topical hair loss tx…for men).
Just wait until the over 50 years!! 😂😂 I've gone lighter in color (hate seeing gray) & it makes a YUGE difference, hardly any shine! Thank you ( both!) for putting great, needed info out there!🎉 p.s. would love more wavy curly vids!
As a 44 year old woman, I really appreciate these conversations about issues, younger women might not yet face! Although so far, my hair is still going strong. Loads of white, but my hair has always been thick and dense and slightly wirery, so I haven't noticed much change in how it feels and behaves.
Hair texture changes after 40 - Causes: 1. Feels like HAIR LOSS: hormonal changes change Hair diameter. Also, weaker hair. 2. Looks like HAIR LOSS: some of it is Hair Breakage. - Reasons: Can be due to harsh chemicals (from hair dye to cover gray hair). Also, due to hormonal change you could be shedding hair. Also deficiencies. - Solution: Use conditioners, give the hair nutrients, treat it gently. Change nutrients, diets, see a doctor to test for deficiencies, test for hormones, get HRT. Eat healthy, move your body, blood circulation, rubbing your scalp to stimulate oil glands. Decrease stress. Sleep. Rogaine. 3. DRY HAIR, more DAMAGED: Small things add up: Reasons: shampoo too often, not adjusting the schedule to your changing hair needs, shampooing tye hair instead of the scalp ... Solutions: Wash less frequently, use dry shampoo to extend. Condition hair and not scalp. condition the ends. 4. LACKING SHINE: Reasons: Going lighter, dryness, lack of moisture Solutions: Some oil, spray shine (very fine mist of oil). Only shampoo the roots, not tye ends. Shampoos that sud up - no control over where it goes. Apply conditioner to ends 5. COARSER HAIR: Reasons: Hypeothyroidism, iron definitely, calcium deficiency. Extra hear sealing. Solutions: it's lacking moisture, pay attention how and how ofteen you shampoo, use heat protector.. To conditioners, leave-in conditioner, heat protector, silk pillowcases (less friction, less breakage, dont pull the moistite out of the hair), bonets for the night. 6. FRIZZ: Reasons: Hair fell out, started using minoxidil - small hair doesn't blend it . Ends look frizzy. Curly hair. Hormones, shampoo, conditioner. Solutions: You need to blow down. Use condition for ends. All you do to style and dry is either causing frizz or minimizing it. Airdrying also can cause frizz, because it takes longer. Use diffusers for curly hair.
New subbie here. I am blown away by the amount of information on technique and applied hair science you provide, and I love the format of including your wife. Due to hair texture changes in my 50s, I'm on the hunt for new styling techniques. Your advice about blow dryer direction and also avoiding the "wrist flick" have made a huge difference. Of course I have been trying new products and tools along the way. With your advice I am looking forward to a lot less "throw it all at the wall and see what sticks" in my future purchasing decisions.
🤯 great to know I'm not losing my mind. My hair feels finer and is getting frizzy which I was told means it could be wavy. Can you recommend a clean hair product for wavy hair? Love the conversation style.
I like this format! Dionna is speaking for all of us by asking the questions and expressing the concerns that we all have. And I like the way the answers and suggestions are being presented. Do more of these!!!😊
Hi Justin I am very impressed with your videos. I have a question please. I went to my salon for a routine grey root touch up and when I was detanging a lot of my hair fell out! I have been coloring only my roots black for 4 years-never a problem. My scalp continued to tingle and itch for a week after the procedure. I have noticed I lost alot of volume. No clue as to why this happened. I am now afraid to color my roots. Could I have suddenly developed an allergy to color? I don't want to go grey.
If you want to tint the greys without ammonia/peroxide, try a semi permanent called Adore. See if they offer a shade to match whatever colour your hair is. They mostly offer "creative colours" but they do have blonde/black/brunette/auburns as well. Another brand to check out is Kiss Tintation. It won't last very long, as they only stain/coat/penetrate the outer layer of the hair shaft. YMMV as with most things, but worth a try if you want to cover/blend away greys in a less damaging way. Hope that helps,I used to bleach every 2 months....
✨😁Continued.... ....I used to bleach every 2 months to tint my hair with different hues from pinks to lavenders to mints to blues. Then I realized I was more than or around 50% grey. I grew out the chemically processed parts over time and used only "direct dyes" that are similar formula to Manic Panic. It's been over 5 years now since I bleached or used any permanent colouring chemicals and my hair and scalp are so much happier. I also only air dry and no hot tools. No sulfates and no silicones. My bits that are my natural virgin colour are so dark brown they appear black and my greys are tinted a stormy grey/blue that fades pretty fast but during that time still looks nice imo as it gets lighter with every wash. ✨⛈️✨
Great video. I like the casual style of it because it feels like a visit with some friends while learning useful information about hair!! Now I understand the changes to my hair and it makes sense. Thank you two for this.
I have always enjoyed your videos! Your wife is beautiful. As I hit 40, I gradually noticed a lot these types of changes you mentioned. I have a new probelm now though because 6 months ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer (Im 48). I went through 4 months of chemo, and finished 3 months ago. I have been growing from a bald head, ugh!..and I thought I had problems before. Lol..I always had long straight blond hair and now it is growing back thick/coarse, curly, and white/gray. I rub rosemary, cocnut oil, and castor oils on my head, take biotin, and eat healthy which seems to be working. The sleep you mentioned, not so much! The castor oil really helped my eyelashes and eyebrows grow, btw which I learned from others who went through chemo regrowth. I am still watching your videos and taking any advice I can use to help my current hair situation. I have never had a picie cut or very short hair, I am trying to figure out these styles. For now, it is wigs for me. I wish i had you to style my little current mullet. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge! ❤
Thank you for sharing your story, I'm so sorry you're going through this. Keep up the hair care, and it will grow again! Send me an email and you can sign up to be a hair model in a future video
Rogain has changed my hair game. Along with letting it go naturally grey. Which turns out to be a beautiful salt and pepper i never wluld have expected.
Thank you for addressing aging hair! You are so articulate in your explanation. I love watching both of you converse. There are a lot of channels with young people, which we all were at one time😃, one person in particular that doesn’t have any hair that’s telling you what you should do for your hair, but it’s geared towards young people. I love that you address all ages but that you’re going to mid age and older because that’s a huge problem. I am on a routine and trimmed off a few inches and don’t wash it every other day but every three days it’s starting to look better. I use Color fanatic leave in conditioner and Redken acidic bonding concentrate is a game changer for me. My hair is definitely looking better and I’m taking spironolactone and minoxidil orally and I see a lot of hair growing in it consistently just like when you work out it takes time. I’m just waiting for all these different hair lens to grow in after telegen effluvium
Oh yes yes yea.. I use my conditioner to wash the scalp on day three or two if needed. I kept thinking my hair hates shampoo. But I can condition wash it and actually if you find the conditioner you like it will do a much better job on the scalp and the whole hair overall. I’m so glad you said we can do that because I had at one point no choice but to do that. I have used high and conditioners and it did not do the job. The only one that seems to be OK for my hair is OG ask conditioner I believe it’s the coconut one. But I’m so glad you said that because it does make the hair happier with just conditioner. So preach those details because you’re on point my friend.
While there are many helpful tips here, I am going to disagree with a few things. My scalp never gets oily and I credit this to the fact that I actually use conditioner from roots to ends. I actually only ever have to wash my hair to refresh the style, not to remove any greasiness. The concept is similar to how using facial oils can help control your skin's oiliness. Second, I find almost all of the Sodium Laureth Sulphate alternatives to be MORE drying to my hair. My hair type is wavy, thick, and coarse. Everyone's hair is different, but for some hair types sulphates are perfectly fine and they have been wrongly villianized in the haircare community. Another thing I do which may have been mentioned in this video, is I apply oil to the ends of my hair before shampoo, and oil to the ends after my hair is dry. Also, if anyone is looking for the cheapest, yet most deeply moisturizing conditioner available on the market, that would be the Aussie 3 minute miracle.
Hi Justin love your videos especially the outdoor ones, and with your wife is extra special . I’m 76 have curly hair and have just grown out all colour after 50 plus years of colouring and loving it trying to grow the length a little now , I’m looking for advice on best shampoos for grey some say not to use purple all the time I wash twice a week if you could give me some options please. I live in Queensland Australia. Thank you 🙌
So interesting - Great video, love the newsletters as well. I definitely noticed the diameter change around the front hairline so I can see through to my head (more gray in with the blonde as well) . I shampoo my hair once a week or less sometimes and add in my natural purple shampoo and sometimes using the purple conditioner. Sometimes I do use a dry shampoo but rarely. I use a heat treatment spray when I blow dry my hair which isn't very often - maybe once a month. My shampoo doesn't suds but I did put it everywhere. I was using a silk pillowcase but had switched it recently, when I washed my sheets, probably need another one that I can also color it to match my peachskin sheets.
Always love your videos. Your wife is a real asset to them. Appreciate this format. Casual and informative. How does Dionna get that one low wave in? I’m guessing, flat iron?! She looks fabulous. 😉
I'm 42 with fine, thin hair and a pixie cut. Do you recommend volumizing shampoo and/or conditioner, or is that too harsh? You guys are wonderful together btw!
Great info! Thanks. I do need clarification on one point, however. At the beginning of your presentation you said our hair diameter becomes thinner with age. Later in the video you said our hair becomes coarser with age. I’m confused. Can you explain what I’m missing? Thanks!
Great question! I should have been more clear. Hair CAN get smaller in diameter. Coarse speaks to the texture not necessary the diameter. Coarse hair tends to lack moisture.
Hi Justin! I have had straight hair all of my life and my greys are coming in CURLY!? 😳 Can you PLEASE do a video for those of us experiencing this regarding the best way to deal with it? Thank you so much!
I let my hair dry naturally regardless of how it may be a little frizzy at times. Using a good conditioner helps a lot. Embrace your age. You are fine the way you are!
Thank you Justin! Great video and loved this discussion, much needed and appreciated content! Question for you: what to do when one works out almost daily, sweating a good amount during workout, with fine curly frizzy post menopausal conundrum hair, feeling unable not to shampoo plus condition daily. What do you suggest? For any curly or straight haired woman that works out regularly, including swimming in a pool. Thank you for your suggestions
What if all you did was use conditioner in the shower and not any shampoo (maybe 2 times a week to wash). I always feel I need to wet my hair in the morning .
*Love this casual "chat" format* . I wish I had been better armed with knowledge like this prior to entering menopause at 50. My hair changes were a major self-esteem punch. It took me about two years to get things right. I had the hormonal issues causing thinning, I had years of hard water causing dullness, over washing causing dryness, and coloring/heat styling damage. I stopped coloring, worked my way into 2 washes/week, got a shower filter, used hard water clarifying s/c combos at least once a month, tried minoxidil but didn't like it and went with rosemary/peppermint/green tea tonic. My hair improved and also became wavy, so I embraced it. Healthy salt and pepper hair is just fine with me. I do use bond builders and a protein treatment about every six weeks at this point. I always had fine strands, but they are baby fine these days.
I’ve heard of people using conditioner first and then shampoo. I can see how that conditioner already on the hair might protect the hair length from the shampoo. Since I started using more product I’m suddenly having buildup on my scalp. Any hints onhow do I prevent that?
Interesting, I’ve actually not heard of people doing that before. My initial thought is that depending on the shampoo they’re using, they may end up stripping the nutrients from the conditioner out of their hair immediately. Probably not the direction I would head. If you’re finding buildup from using product, using a stronger shampoo once every few times you shampoo or once a week, if you shampoo more often will help.
I really know next to nothing about hair. I've always had really fine hair so that's never been one of the things that defines me. I truly don't understand not washing your hair. Like I said, I have really fine hair so I will go maybe every other day at most. I need a Basics for Dummies video about not washing. How do you style it? Do you wet it in the shower and just not wash? Why go to a fourth day without shampooing if it looks and feels gross - is it really worth hating your hair 25% of the time (based on Dionna's schedule she mentions)? Don't you need to wash the product out of the mid lengths? I truly don't understand this basic concept. Thanks for the education. I'm learning a lot from you.
Hi there, I love this video, but I still need advice pls. My hair is thick and curly. I always air dry - it takes about 3 hours and I do not touch it, i add a curly styling cream and an oil on the scalp. I wash it just over a week as it's very dry. My scalp is dry. I can use moracin oil straight on the scalp to massage. I can oil ends and mids later on when dry. I use mouse the day after to help eliminate frizz which it does very well and I can either continue to mouse or use moracan oil the following days after which my hair feels nice and soft and shiney and combs easily through which a wide tomb come. my hair can feel like a haystack without anything! 8 years ago I had 15 sessions of radiotherapy which made my hair and skin oily - that was hard to work out. Now my hair is still but length but is turning whiter, dryer and the fringe area is breaker off - i have a mallen streak here where the most breakage is and don't know what to do for the best. I sleep in a bonnet! please help, I'm sure I am not the only one! :) thanking you in advance.
Thank you for this video! It was very informative and you and Dionna addressed most of my hair concerns. I'm 60 with stick straight, fine hair. I thought I was losing more hair, but now I think it is my hair getting thinner. I also get weird kinky hair at my temple, what's with that? Do you recommend a wash out deep conditioner every week or two? I condition my midshaft to ends every shampoo (I shampoo every three to four days) and it still doesn't seem like enough. I use a satin pillow case and I think I need to upgrade to silk. There is a huge price range in silk pillowcases! Do you recommend a brand or what should I look for in a silk pillow case?
I color dark. Redken with that taken bond protector in the color. Roots only. The top layer of my hair is SO frizzy. Al the rest is fine even though I color all my roots. I have a HUGE problem getting that frizzy top layer to lay flat n not poof out. I’m stuck. Oils and whatnot don’t really work. I have to blow dry or flat iron. I usually blow dry it but it’s so frustrating bc it ruins the look of my straight, 1 length hair
Funny, my extra fine hair turned thicker when I was in my 40’s, it also got darker. Now, 10-15 years later, some of it is gray, but it’s still way thicker than it was when I was younger.
Why do some UA-camrs put music on in the background then have to talk over it. I stop watching when they do that, why can we not simply listen to the people talking together or to the screen? I'm sick of music everywhere I go
@@dionnahickox Hi Donna, music throughout the video is distracting from your great information. Maybe have some low music at the beginning that fades away, and again fading up at the end/outro. (Former corporate media)
It depends on how much you’re using, and how often your shampooing. But the thought is that shampooing even the roots, you’re going to end up getting shampoo through the mid shaft and ends enough to remove that product. If you find that you’re not removing enough, once a week, you can shampoo your whole head mid shaft and ends as well.
I have one major question about dry shampoo that I'm hoping you can answer - Why is it better to apply all of those chemicals found in dry shampoo to hair and scalp than it is to simply rinse with water and/or shampoo as normal? Do we really know how the chemicals in dry shampoos impact our bodies?
Basic dry shampoo actually has a pretty simple formulation. Something like this (this is the one I use): BUTANE, PROPANE, ALCOHOL DENAT, ORYZA SATIVA STARCH, CETRIMONIUM CHLORIDE, PANTHENOL. Nothing offensive in there. Of course, others may have added fragrance and other stuff. But if you're worried about irritation, just check and compare the labels and choose accordingly. You could even try using just the starch. Although applying it without the convenience of a pressurized bottle is somewhat cumbersome.
Oh, I don't know...dihydrogen monoxide is pretty scary stuff, if you ask me. You can drown in it and everything. (that's sarcasm, in case it wasn't obvious). Why would you assume, that butane and propane are harmful to you? I mean, if 'used as intended', obviously. They're just gasses, just like oxygen and carbon dioxide, which you breathe in and make in your own body, respectively. You even produce your very own methane in your large intestine. Butane and propane have been safely used in spray bottles and other applications for 50+ years. You're statistically far more likely to have a bad reaction to 'all natural' essential oils used for fragrance or alcohol used as a conservative, to avoid 'chemical' ones (as if alcohol isn't a chemical). I mean, be extra careful and all that, by all means. I'm not saying, we should just blindly use everything, that's put in front of us, when it comes to cosmetics or food. But at least do a basic google search or something, before you condemn some ingredient. Or listen to people with medical degrees or PhD's, who have made it their mission to teach the public about what's worth worrying about and what isn't. They're not hard to find on UA-cam.
Justin & Dionna, what are your thoughts on repair products - ie, olaplex 3, K18 or Redkin Bonding Treatment? Will they help with damaged, color treated for over 40 folks and if so, how often & when should they be used? Also, when you mention how important it is to moisturize your hair is it better to use a hair mask or regular conditioner?
I enjoyed this video and learned a lot. My question is how do you only shampoo your roots when you have short hair (pixie)? I have fine straight hair with no body, so I need to use more products and shampoo every 2 or 3 days. I haven't had my hair colored since the first of April, so I may be having new experiences without the coloring and what looks like silver hair.
Thabks Justin. Love these videos. I now go 3-5 days between shampoos but feel like to get the build up and gunk off my scalp i need a shampoo that really cleans. Like a clarifying shampoo every wash. Does the new wash clean well enough to clean 4 day old hair?
You mention to eat healthier, but you don’t specify what that means. Hair is made from protein, so you need high quality protein in the diet, which means animal protein. Plant proteins are by and large incomplete and not very bio available. When I increased my protein intake it made a huge difference in the thickness of my hair.
Here's what's worked for me: 1. No shampoo 😂. Sounds wild but just cleaning products put together from my kitchen. Tea rinses, fruit masks etc. 2. No dyeing. Accepting my coarse, rough grey hair in my 40s set me free. Plus you save money. 3. Micro trims every 3 months. 4. Protecting hair while sleeping, putting it in a braid. 5. No heat styling. 6. Nutritional diet, exercise, stress management and improved sleep. 7. Supplements. In my 40s my hair volume increased and shedding got reduced to 50%.
Even though I am 67 I have to wash my hair every other day. To be honest I could wash it every day. Once I went to my dermatologist and she saw suberic dermatitis spots on my scalp. She asked how often I wash my hair. As someone who washed my hair every day, I started trying to cut back to every 3 days. She emphatically expressed to me that if you have an oily scalp you have to wash your hair every day. The dermatitis build up can cause follicles to die. I concentrate on my scalp when I shampoo. I use minoxidil the night before in the temple area. It really has helped. I am convinced that HRT has kept hair on my head!😁
My mom and I struggle with terribly frizzy hair around the nape of our necks. It looks rediculous when I put my hair up and it’s a hot frizzy mess sticking out everywhere. Do you have any suggestions for products to smooth that out?
Hi! i'm 37 and i see the thinner thing, also i bleach a lot in the last 3 years just to cover the gray hair...so we can use some bond repairing products that help us? or some reviving products to improve the hair growing? i take powder collagen for a month and a didnt see any effects,,,...maybe i have to take longer

How to make a hormone¿
(answer) Don't pay Her 😅
You2 are adorable btw
I like all of your videos! Love the hiking ones 😊
Great conversation!
Love this type of video. I’m 52 and have wavy fine hair but lots of it. What type of bob do you recommend? I live on the Gold Coast Australia and going to get my hair done soon. Thanks
Literally the only hair stylist I have seen thus far that acknowledges hormones, diet and lifestyle and how it impacts hair
Thank you so much Mary Ann for your support!
Yes ! Me too!
Same!
I had board straight hair my entire life until I turn 53 & now it’s curly!! So I’m learning how to take care of curly hair!!
Thank you so much for sharing! I'll do more content on curly hair
Same - it’s like someone else’s hair on my head
Same! Each hair is coarser, curler and appears like I have more hair than when I was a little younger. But, I actually have at least 25% less hair. Age and thyroid (over and underactive) do so much damage. Especially after 50 or so.
I think it’s from hormonal changes after menopause!!
Love this format, Justin!…you and Dionna are going to take over UA-cam with this husband and wife team!..Dionna, thank you for asking all the important questions for us mature, some more than others, I will be 68 in July😂😂, women!!!…Great tips and great advice as always!!!!…much love and appreciation to you both!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜
Awww! I'm going to let Dionna know you said this - thank you so much for watching, Linda - you rock
I love your video but the editor spelled “breakage” wrong. 😆
Just saw that too!! Ugh, lol! Still a great video
Love her hair! So cute
Thank you so much for sharing this. The texture change is a big one. More videos to come on this
@@justinhickox wonderful!
The best thing for my dry skin is coconut oil lightly put on after showering🇦🇺
I stopped colouring my hair 10 years ago & started focusing on nutrition. my hair no longer grey
also left corporate America
@@kimgordon3695 What nutrition do you practice?
Everything makes sense. Stress really was a big factor for me, especially when menopause anxiety kicked in, but I am doing much better overall and I am loving my salt & pepper strands. Satin/silk pillowcases have also been very helpful!
Great to know that you're using silk pillowcases! Thank you so much for watching.
You two are awesome and I love the banter❤❤❤
Thank you so much!! Did you like this conversational style of video more than the normal informational style (step 1,2,3 etc) style video?
I lost most,of my hair after having Covid at 51. It came back in curly and I hate it. It’s also a lot more delicate than it was.
great conversation you two, I am up to 5 days w/o washing granted day 5 is getting gnarly since day 4 is not cake walk
Proud of you!
I'm so happy this video validated your feelings. Keep doing what you're doing. Thank you so much for your support, Dani.
Diane.
Thank you for sharing your experience! Which leave in conditioner do you use?
Condition ends before washing roots, air dry low temp tools, all my hair can handle.
Great tips, thanks for watching
Agreed!
OMG, This video speaks to my experience right now. It is such an ego hit for your hair to look bad.
Thanks for watching, Dionna feels the same way
Great conversation- I lost some hair around my face before I realized what was going on. Thanks to you and Live Love Locks my hair is much better !!
Litteraly the beast hair video i ever seen. Thanks!
I am 58, I really hate this aging hair. I am doing my best with it because I will always have long hair, and I don’t wash it as often as I used to and it still feels dry and just weird. For me it really began looking and feeling different at age 54. 😩 Ugh.
Thank you so much for sharing, there are so many people in your boat, but I'm here to help!
I've got natural curly hair - I use silk pillow cases and use this channel and Live Love Locks that got my hair back in better condition
Right on. Thanks for watching, always.
lighter hair might look less shiny but my natural hair color really shines and people complement me. I do dilute my shampoo.
As a 44 year old woman, I really appreciate these conversations about issues, younger women might not yet face! Although so far, my hair is still going strong. Loads of white, but my hair has always been thick and dense and slightly wirery, so I haven't noticed much change in how it feels and behaves.
These are important conversations!!! Happy you're hair is still strong and healthy. Thank you so much for watching
Love your videos but it would be useful if there were productscwe could buy in the uk.
thank you for the feedback. We will try to work on that!
Hair texture changes after 40 - Causes:
1. Feels like HAIR LOSS: hormonal changes change Hair diameter.
Also, weaker hair.
2. Looks like HAIR LOSS: some of it is Hair Breakage.
- Reasons:
Can be due to harsh chemicals (from hair dye to cover gray hair). Also, due to hormonal change you could be shedding hair.
Also deficiencies.
- Solution:
Use conditioners, give the hair nutrients, treat it gently.
Change nutrients, diets, see a doctor to test for deficiencies, test for hormones, get HRT.
Eat healthy, move your body, blood circulation, rubbing your scalp to stimulate oil glands. Decrease stress. Sleep.
Rogaine.
3. DRY HAIR, more DAMAGED:
Small things add up:
Reasons:
shampoo too often, not adjusting the schedule to your changing hair needs, shampooing tye hair instead of the scalp ...
Solutions:
Wash less frequently, use dry shampoo to extend. Condition hair and not scalp. condition the ends.
4. LACKING SHINE:
Reasons:
Going lighter, dryness, lack of moisture
Solutions:
Some oil, spray shine (very fine mist of oil). Only shampoo the roots, not tye ends. Shampoos that sud up - no control over where it goes. Apply conditioner to ends
5. COARSER HAIR:
Reasons:
Hypeothyroidism, iron definitely, calcium deficiency.
6. FRIZZ:
Reasons:
Hair fell out, started using minoxidil - small hair doesn't blend it .
Ends look frizzy.
Curly hair.
Hormones, shampoo, conditioner.
Solutions:
You need to blow down.
Use condition for ends.
All you do to style and dry is either causing frizz or minimizing it. Airdrying also can cause frizz, because it takes longer. Use diffusers for curly hair.
Great video!
Thanks so much for the advice for us curly girls!
You're so welcome - thanks for watching!
Hi Justin. Many thanks to you and your wife for this video. Helps a lot, but still waiting for one that helps to style a lot of frizzy hair. 🤗🤗
Thanks for watching! I will work on that one
Your wife looks much better with shorter hairstyle ! Love to watch you working together!
It's been fun having Dionna as my co-host! Thank you so much for your support!
Love the conservation video! Trying the Hairstory now. It’s hard to get used to because it doesn’t foam up like traditional shampoos.
Yes, this is what Dionna thought too. Glad you're giving it a go. Thank you so much for watching!
🤯 great to know I'm not losing my mind. My hair feels finer and is getting frizzy which I was told means it could be wavy. Can you recommend a clean hair product for wavy hair?
Love the conversation style.
I'm glad you like it! I have my fav products in the description!
I like this format! Dionna is speaking for all of us by asking the questions and expressing the concerns that we all have. And I like the way the answers and suggestions are being presented. Do more of these!!!😊
Ok, noted. thank you so much for your support, Mary
So happy you enjoyed it, that was our goal. Thank you so much for watching.
Thank you so much for sharing Sonja
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Nanci! We are trying to keep it real over here
Oh yes yes yea..
Extremely informational today and love the back and forth with your lovely wife!
Also I have wavy frizzy hair and while it’s air drying, all I have to do is bend over to pick up something on the floor, and my hair blows up. UGH!
Very informative. Nice to see something for woman of my age group!
Always love your videos. Your wife is a real asset to them. Appreciate this format. Casual and informative. How does Dionna get that one low wave in? I’m guessing, flat iron?! She looks fabulous. 😉
I needed this video. I’m 51 and my hair is thinning and feels wiry
I'm 42 with fine, thin hair and a pixie cut. Do you recommend volumizing shampoo and/or conditioner, or is that too harsh? You guys are wonderful together btw!
Love this video! ❤ Thanks guys!!
You're so welcome! I'm so glad you liked it!
I now apply a mixture of shampoo and water to my roots before I step into the shower, it keeps my ends from getting dry.
This is a great tip - thanks for sharing!
Great info!
Thanks!
Hi Justin! I have had straight hair all of my life and my greys are coming in CURLY!? 😳 Can you PLEASE do a video for those of us experiencing this regarding the best way to deal with it? Thank you so much!
Great video! Love all the fabulous information and the format💜💜💜
So happy you enjoyed this different format!
Thanks to you and Dionna for this great conversation! 👏🏼💕👍🏼
Thank you so much for watching, Jillane!
What if all you did was use conditioner in the shower and not any shampoo (maybe 2 times a week to wash). I always feel I need to wet my hair in the morning .
Great topic! I sweat from my head like my dad did😩 by second day it feels yucky
Love watching you two. Thank you for making this video ❤
It was fun to film, thank you so much for watching
This was so informative! Thanks for all your videos!❤
Hey Renee, thank you so much for your support!
Thank you so much for sharing, Dionna had these thoughts and feelings as well - I'm glad you liked the casual chat format
Great advice. Thank you!
You're so welcome, thanks for watching!
I always love you advice and suggestions. You and your wife are adorable!!
Aw thank you! I will let Dionna know this - she's been an awesome co-host.
Thanks for this Justin, I’ll try your tips. I’ve got thick, coarse hair but it’s really drying out with age.
Let me know how you go, thank you so much for watching.
Try The Body Shop banana shampoo & conditioner ❤
Great video!
My hair diameter really thinned. I have gray curly wavy hair. So quite dry. The curlsmith leave in cream helps a lot.
Great vid! You're so funny Donna!
Thanks! I like to say Im the funny one in the family! lol
@@dionnahickox Same with me and my Husband, lol
Great information as always. You are the best!
Aw, thank you so much Julie
Amazing how hair texture changes. Thanks for sharing your experience - and thanks for watching
Did you change your diet or stop or start exercising?
@@vanessac1965 I did not make any change back then. I did during the pandemic but that didn’t change my hair.
Great information! Thank you.
Thanks for watching, Colette
Great info. Awful background music. It’s distracting.
Why do some UA-camrs put music on in the background then have to talk over it. I stop watching when they do that, why can we not simply listen to the people talking together or to the screen? I'm sick of music everywhere I go
Yes, no background music, please. It's exhausting to try and make out what is being said. Especially when watching after a long day of work.
We appreciate the feedback. Was it the music at the beginning of the video or throughout the entire video that you found distracting?
@@dionnahickox Hi Donna, music throughout the video is distracting from your great information. Maybe have some low music at the beginning that fades away, and again fading up at the end/outro. (Former corporate media)
@@soozinn thanks so much. We appreciate the feedback. :-)
What if you use mousse and hairspray? Don't you need to wash those out of the midshaft and ends?
@@raraavis7782 - Butane and propane? That just sounds so much more toxic to me than basic water.
Hello Justin, I liked your video a lot. Would you recommend brushing thin hair regularly. I would appreciated your answer.
Great video!!!
Thank you for the love Annette!
I need a review of the new Live Love Locks Weightless Shampoo & Conditioner!
57 here with natural silver hair, no heat styling, wear a hat in the sun always, and wash my hair once or twice a week! Why is it still dry?!
Try redken united leave in conditioner.
@@ThrewOutMyHalo thank you!

What heat protectant do you recommend? I don’t see it in your links.
Definitely, it's my favorite at the moment. Nice work going for 5 days between shampoos!
You mention to eat healthier, but you don’t specify what that means. Hair is made from protein, so you need high quality protein in the diet, which means animal protein. Plant proteins are by and large incomplete and not very bio available. When I increased my protein intake it made a huge difference in the thickness of my hair.
Super video!😊
Well thanks for watching!
Here's what's worked for me:
Follow your dermatologist's lead on this! Thank you so much for your support, Kathy.
