    Your o ring is brittle because you are freezing it. After closing the valve on the small tank, close the valve at the big tank while the hose is still connected to the small tank. Bleed the excess through the hose bleeder valve, not out the end of the hose.

    The flies love the smell of the ethyl mercaptan used to odorize the propane. I had a truck that ran on propane and refilled many 20# (5 gallon) from it. I also used the the 20# tanks to refill the little camping throw away tanks. As you noticed, there is a lot of free gas coming from the vent and it is quite flammable. Your major concern is a spark from static electricity near the leak on a cold dry day when you reach out to touch the tanks. Another lesser known problem is getting sprayed with liquid propane; if it hits your eyes you are going to have a problem, if it hits your clothing you will get a bad frost burn. Bare skin doesn't frostbite as quickly as flesh covered by clothing wet with propane, due to the 'Leidenfrost effect'. Try to set up your filled tank far enough away from the nurse tank so you can get back to the shut off valve if something goes wrong. Nothing we ever do is risk free but we need to arrange things so you have options if things go wrong.

    My Daddy taught me how to transfer Propane and we were never precise BUT and its a BIG BUT, while you can getaway with overfilling the smaller tanks in the winter for immediate use. It is a terrible Idea to store an over filled tank as it could rupture in hot weather. You Really Really need to weigh the tank and Insure you only add the 20 30 or 100lbs it is made to hold.

    Nice tutorial. I've been doing this for over a decade on my 1000ga tank. The big tanks will fill a 20# in about 7 minutes. You're bleed could be a bit less, I rarely use more than 3/4 turn, that might save you a few bucks in the long run!😉 It's a great thing to save at least 50% of store fills, and not have to transport!

    The mistake he .ade was he should have shut off the flow from the large tank first when he was finished. He wasted a lot of fuel as you saw. It's OK to have a small amount of propane remain inside the hose but as long as the source propane valve is shut off, only a few pounds of propane under much less pressure remains inside the hose.

    Thanks for the video. Great presentation. The reason tanks fill faster at the fill station is they have a pump running to jack up the fill pressure. When filling from your 500 gallon tank at home you only have the pressure in your 500# tank. The pressure in your 500# tank varies with outside air temp and sunlight.

    Great bulk tank fuel transfer tutorial. 😎 This is also the first time I've ever seen any propane transfer kit for sale to transfer from a bulk tank! 😊 Our bulk tank is smaller 250 Gallons (about 200 Gal. @ 80% full), with 6 spare 20lb tanks. I plumbed our bulk tank to run my dual-fuel generators directly from the "Low-Pressure (Regulated-side)" of my bulk tank, or the smaller 20lb tanks as needed (for more portability). Derating two 2,500-watt dual-fuel generators based on propane fuel and our altitude, I can parallel both to produce approx. 3,700 watts continuously for 2-3 months, or using one generator @ 1,850 watts for approx. 4-6 months, better yet, recharge a Delta Pro in less than 2 hours (if my solar system doesn't keep up). 😉

    I believe we have the same transfer kit (5133 ?). Unlike others I have seen videos of, to connect this valve to the 500 gallon LP tank, it requires me to turn the entire valve assembly (and hose when connected) at the same time and as I am turning it, the last turn and a half as I am depressing the relief valve, I have LP rapidly escaping out of the LP tank. It does not feel safe to me. Do you encounter the same thing? Other transfer kits for different tank connections, have seen a swivel nut to attach to the tank and the LP doesn't flow until the valve is opened. I would much rather have the later kit. I would love to see how you connect to the Propane tank!! Thanks for any comments!

      The wet leg is also called a dewatering port. It is required as the propane company can’t legally transport a bulk tank with more than 5% remaining fuel. This allows them to drain the remaining liquid propane.

    I wanted to do it to save money by refilling for the price of a tank refill and of course I can get a better price in the summer. But with bleeding it the whole time, I’m wondering if I’m really saving money or spending the same amount as the refill places charge.

    • @kevinburt8301
      @kevinburt8301 4 місяці тому

      You will save money. You are bleading off the excess gasses in the tank and filling it with liquid propane.

    • @brianlittle717
      @brianlittle717 4 місяці тому

      @@kevinburt8301 they aren’t excess gases though. The gas is part of the fuel you pay for. It’s the gas that feeds your appliances and you have no way to measure how much you waste. I’ve done this 5 or 6 times now because I’ve been using gas from my 500 gallon tank at work to refill 100# cylinders. I’ve tried warming the big tank with hot water once they equalize. I’ve thought about putting the 100# tank in a big trash can of ice water, but then I couldn’t use the bathroom scale. I’ve thought about the blanket heaters but those are like $1,000. Either way I am wasting something whether it is electricity or propane. By bleeding the smaller tank, it cools the smaller tank through vaporization and lowers the temperature. That’s the only thing that seems to work and it takes a couple hours. I wish there was an electric pump. I’m sure a recovery machine for hvac refrigerant would work but I’m too scared to mix propane with electricity. About my bathroom scale, it’s just a mechanical scale with a dial but my 100# tank is bigger than it is so you can’t see the scale. I built a little platform with 2x4s to put between the scale and the tank so I can Reas the dial. Having a scale is a huge help. I have a refrigerant scale with a remote display that’s perfect for smaller tanks but it’s only rated at 140 pounds.

    Why story a target near your tank? If you are near a road someone may try to shoot it. The thread inside the valve is a POL, left hand. The threads on the outside are QC1, right hand. You could get a POL cap to cover your o ring. if you had a presser release on the valve on you 500 gal tank valve you would not necessarily have to purge the line ever time. Propane boils at -44 degrees zero fahrenheit. I have filed 1000's of thanks. Be safe, Have fun, Enjoy you family and friends!

  • @Rational_Party

    Just so everyone knows, it isn't always this clean and easy... The internal valve on the liquid line of my tank leaks, so the second I remove the cap, it's spitting boiling cold propane out... When that is the case, the rubber O-ring on the extractor valve gets so hard almost immediately and cannot be forced down in the bore far enough to get the threads started. I ended up pulling the O-ring, and then I found that the extractor opens the valve before the nut actually catches, so you have to jam it on, then give the nut a spin while propane sprays out... Once the nut catches, you can tighten it down until the propane stops boiling out. Then it's easy... And repeat every time I want to fill tanks... FYI, there is a little white washer under the cap has to be in just the right spot to re-seal, all the while boiling cold propane is spitting out, making it that much more difficult. What a disaster for me, but at least I know I can do it now... :(

      My experience is a touch different than yours. Mine doesn't start boiling out until the valve is almost all of the way turned in. The last turn or two is when mine boils out, and yes I do not like that. I wrapped my pipe wrench with tape as to be sure I don't create a spark. I love the savings, but I don't like the spewing gas that temporarily occurs when screwing it on and off. It's funny no one shows this connection on their videos. :-)

  • @brianlittle717
    @brianlittle717 7 місяців тому

    Why do you need a tee and a bleeder for that little bit? Why not crack the fitting on the tank and bleed it there? I’m wondering if there is a pump where you can transfer it without bleeding it the whole time.

    • @raymondpierce8162
      @raymondpierce8162 3 місяці тому

      The amount of pressure in that space prevents you from loosening the fittings, or makes it very at the very least. It’s not worth the hassle not having a bleeder. As for a pump, there is, but it’s going to be pricey. That’s how they fill them at, well wherever they fill them. Gas stations, lpg suppliers etc. The little fitting he removed and waited for “a mist” isn’t always used I’ve noticed. They’ll fill by actual weight which is stamped on the collar of the tank. What’s normally done is when you’re close in weight crack the screw and stop. So you’re not venting the entire time. All tanks have weight measurements stamped on them, larger above 1lb at least.

    • @brianlittle717
      @brianlittle717 3 місяці тому

      @@raymondpierce8162I’ve actually done this several times now. I use a bathroom scale for weight, but I had to build a little stand in order to see the dial because the tank is larger than the scale. Once the tanks reach an equal pressure, as long as they are the same temperature, then no more transfer will take place without a liquid pump. At that point you either have to warm the larger tank or cool the smaller tank. I’ve tried some ideas but the best way I’ve found is to slowly bleed the vapor from the dip tube of the smaller tank. This cools the liquid in it through vaporization and allows more liquid to flow into it. The scale will show that liquid is transferring and the bleeder shows when liquid is up to the level of the dip tube by evaporating from the vent. Once I close my valves down, I’m able to disconnect my hose without a tee and an unnecessary valve and vent. When I disconnect my grill or my griddle I don’t need any kind of vent before disconnecting.

    I am not sure about « DIY « since a propane accident can flatten a concrete building and shatter windows in an entire neighborhood

      Only if the Gas is enclosed and has a high saturation and a sufficient flash point. I was a Blaster at a mine for many years. Performing the task out doors is fine if one smells the pungent odor stop.

    =============================
    Bottles in the UK have a TARE weight,
    ===============================
    so all you need is a suitable set of scales,
    and you can fill the CORRECT weight
    for the specific bottle.
    OVERFILLING
    is a truly terrible thing to do.
    /
    Bottles returned to the company for refill,
    get tested for safety.

    20# propane tanks hold 4.5 gallons of propane. 30# tanks hold 6.8 gallons of propane.

    Have your lawnmower sitting there and put that excess propane from the hose into the fuel tank of the mower.

    My only comment and suggestions for you and viewers is having the proper safety equipment on. You did mention how the tank was cold. Think about that on your expose skin or eyes.
    P.S. Someone else mention about filling the tank to the standard 80%. How you would easily do that with your system I don't know. Maybe checking the tank weight before and after? ("TW" aka Tare Weight) But again I am thinking of your safety and others.

      The bleed off valve on the 20 lb tank has a tube that goes down into the tank to the 80% level.

    This is the goofiest way to do this. I have a transfer hose on my tank and i just go over to the tank hook up my hose and turn it on and open the bleeder and when it starts putting liquid out its done. No need to use a weight scale luke you got. All thats unnecessary

    The O-ring is degrading due to the hose purge. After your tank refill process, a wise man would change the O-ring after ever refill.

    For legal reasons, may I suggest re-uploading this with an asterisk stating something to the tune of "don't try this at home".

    if you chill your tanks, they'll fill faster.
