- I have figured out how to fill my own propane tanks at home. This is pretty easy to do with this setup.
Come along to see how it works

It's scary watching a guy that has no idea what he's doing refilling a propane tank. He's learning as he shoots the video.
That’s how the first person to do it figured it out to lol
Trail Blazer 😂
it's just physics. If the tank isn't overfilled and there's no air in it, should be fine.
Was anyone else just waiting for the explosion?🔥 🤣👍
Just one ⚡️ spark, kept closing my eyes.
@@jpshowpro8408 🤣😂
Exactly
Every CW video there is a chance.
To be honest... I was slightly worried. Not anymore.
Gotta admit..i felt like this was the last video ever by the Lawn Rebel when this started...
Nice video, thanks for making it. Your unfamiliarity with the process and equipment is a little unnerving, but as long as you don't blow up you learn new stuff and get better. Here's some info that might help others investigating this process: Propane weighs 4.24lbs/gallon. A 20lb bottle (like shown in this video) is supposed to hold 20lbs or 4.7 gallons when filled. When filling and the vent on the 20lb bottle starts spitting liquid propane the bottle is considered "filled to a safe level". The "safe level" leaves empty space at the top of the bottle for expansion of the liquid when the outside temperature rises. Propane bottles have an "over pressure" relief valve that will vent gas if overfilled and then the temperature rises too much. However, they will vent wherever they are located and if it's in your garage then it might fill your garage with propane gas........... and that might be a disaster. 250 to 1000 gallon tanks have a tube that extends almost to the bottom of the tank that is immersed in the liquid. This video demonstrates transferring liquid from the large tank into the 20# tank using the "liquid" tube I just described. This can be a slow process, maybe an hour because you're relying on the vapor pressure inside the large tank to push the liquid into your 20lb bottle. When you go to a "filling station" they have a pump that pumps the liquid into your tank under higher pressure so they can fill your 20lb bottle in about 60 seconds. Stay safe, loved the video.
I love videos where guys who don't know what they are doing, make a video to show us how to do it.
That side screw (Bleeder) you loosened is actually a fixed liquid level gauge. As soon as liquid come out, it means it is filled to 80 percent, AND THAT IS ALL YOU FILL A TANK TO. The tank you have is an exhange tank, that was filled probably to 17 or 18 pounds. They make more $$ that way. It is best to go to a dispenser and have it filled to 20 lbs. A bbq cylinder at 80 percent holds 20 lbs. Although all bbq cylinders now have Over fill protection device on the valve, they do not always work. a 100 percent filled cylinder does not allow for expansion, and when warmed up by warmer temperatures, it will cause the relief valve to pop and leak propane to release pressure. If there is a flame near by, or a spark when it releases, boom!!!
Excellent explanation. I was going to add my thoughts as I have done this for 30 years, but you covered it all! Only addition I could make is I have a scale and add 20 or 30 #’s to the tare wt. stamped on the collar of every tank so I know it’s full, but the 80% vent straw is sufficient.
can you actually fill the tank with liquid propane or is he just filling it with vapor
@@rickyschwiderson7737 Liquid. Supply tank has a dip tube going to the bottom of the tank from that valve.
@@Gopher7 gotcha good to know
@@rickyschwiderson7737 yes tube runs to bottom to withdraw liquid.
I've never laughed so hard watching someone fill a freaking propane tank! Nice video
This was a perfect mix of entertainment and education. This reminded me of the Red Green Show and Adventures with Bill. Next time try using some duct tape to help hold the valves together. I also love the NO GLOVES approach. That's how you get tougher hands. And sometimes a nice little frost bitten, lost finger or maybe an explosion of some sorts. Trial and error is the way to go! LOVE IT!

Another fantastic HOW TO VIDEO!! Nice to see that Honda is still out in the boneyard...exactly where it was when I was there last year.
Safety third.
😂 Love the sarcasm. I’ve noticed that as the projects get more dangerous the more rebel we see.
I keep telling him what's wrong with it and what to replace, but he just ignores me.....
🤥
Elevate the mower up on bricks and install accent lighting around it! 👌
Okay so sir. What you did was pump propane into a liquid withdrawal valve. I am a service tech trainee. I work on propane tanks and install them that is NOT what you do. Do not ever do this he put the gas in the wrong spot. Just because the threads fit doesn’t mean that’s where it goes
Why is that NOT what you do? Genuinely wondering. And is there a better way to do this?
That portable tank has an OPD valve... Overfill Protection Device.
There's a float attached to the valve on the inside of the tank.
When the tank gets to 80%, the OPD valve shuts off and won't let any more propane into the tank.
A "full" portable tank only has 4 gallons, not 5 and it has 20lbs, not 25.
If you want to know how much is in the tank, weigh it. The tare weight of the tank is stamped on it. Just subtract the tare weight from the total weight.
I watched this whole video filled with anxiety.... for you. 😳😳😳 who needs to go the movies, when Connor ward does UA-cam thrillers.
This is one of those video’s that makes me a little nervous for you. Great Job 👏
No joke lmao. I was like eehhhhhh 😒😒😒
The gas comes out at about -50c. Gloves might be a decent idea.
It's good for removing warts too, Connor!
Ahhh wart removal burn huh? Nice
I'm almost surprised he didn't do this at night with a lit kerosene lantern and a cigarette.
Opening that cap on the liquid port reminds me of a CSB video I saw where they didn't know the full procedures and ended up with an uncontrolled venting blowing up a gas station...

I am all for not reading the directions but you sir take that to a whole new level! 💥🤯
There wasnt any ways th this one
Good one! Didn't think this was learn as you go, and this is stuff that can go badly wrong, glad it workedout
with these kind of things its good to be prepared and know what you do, with all respect it looks like trial and error what you are doing. Trial and error is an bad idea with stuff like propane...

That looks awesome. But I checked the price, and it's over $250 for the transfer kit. Yikes, I'd have to use a lot more propane in small tanks than I do now to save any money at all.
I do it to save a trip to the refill place and to save time.. not money
@@lawnrebel Hey, with the price of gas these days, that needs to be factored into it as well. :)
First off, that cold stuff will FREEZE burn you, and you are dealing with Propane, a pressurized LPG. A tank will always have vaper, or Vaper & Liquid. For safety reasons, you need to remove your valve and hose assemble when you're finished with it. Also, they make a gage, in which you can fill & weigh your bottle, at the same time. And that little bleeder screw is the bleed and a level of 80 percent, open it when you start to fill, and at the first sign of any liquid, close it off! YOU AT MAX ALLOWED! When you get a chance do some more reserch on LPG. It's great when we can look at something, and do something to save money, or save a step of having to deal with the public, but whatever a person put his or her hand to, at the end of the day we want to make it home!
This will only work if the liquid dip tube is ALREADY INSTALLED on the bulk tank. If it is not, all you’ll get is vapor off the top of the tank, and you’ll never be able to fill your portable tanks.
Also, anytime you’re going to work on propane and you make the statement, “I’m not too sure if this is going to work,” then JUST DON’T!
If you are going to do something so dangerous at least use a scale and don’t overfill the tank! When it warms up It will blow it’s relief if you are lucky or explode.
Connor you don't have to bleed out all of the liquid in the hose , just shut the valves. Otherwise you are wasting a ton of propane. Good job though 👍
Man when I saw this I said no this is not good it's not for idiots better left for pros. I've been doing this
all my life on the farm with tractors. This will be Conners last day on earth, you were lucky. Open the valve up more and when it comes out it's full when it's solid white you got it better wear gloves you can freeze and burn your hands.
HA HA... good for you to do on the farm but not for me?
The tank has the empty weight stamped on it take that number + 20 should give you the pounds of the tank when full.
OMG, you are one lucky summbich. I've never seen a more untrained, unaware or luckier person working with propane. Didn't use brass wrenches, talking about venting air out of the tank, not weighing anything. You were very lucky this day, the system is essentially working but you need to educate yourself if you are going to play with fire.
This video should with the warning - DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!
Need to keep the bleeder open until gas comes out and it takes a while if you don't have a pump
Bathroom scale and stop when at 20lbs propane added....and maybe throw a padlock on the valve and you’re set!
A luggage scale would also work well.
You can build this for around $75-100 bucks. High pressure hose and fittings from local plumbing supply house is alot cheaper than the $250 price tag they got on this kit.
I dig this dude, though... flipping badass mullet and porn stash just winging it like a rockstar is forcing me to subscribe to his channel🤘
“THIS IS NOT A HOW TO”... Next step is to trench a line over by there.
Lol
Not to mention, if you take the withdrawal valve off completely too quickly (threads are very short) and you dont make sure the valve checks. You will not be able to stop the release and he is not wearing gloves. Freezing propane liquid would pour out all over your hands, arms, probably face resulting in severe burns and possibly an explosion if there is an ignition source near by!
What he did in this video was dangerous.
Messing around with a "liquid withdrawal valve" on any propane tank, it's 100% the most dangerous pay of the job. And "showing" people how to do this, is irresponsible and dangerous. This is how you get your name in the paper, the obit section. DO NOT DO THIS. INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS AND STUPID!!!
Man you just went through a whole lot of work that you're going to have to repeat every time you empty that bottle why not just add a line directly to the shed to run the heater on without the bottle then you don't put yourself in any danger refilling tanks. Also the bleeder valve on the side of the propane tank your filling needs to remain cracked open during the entire fill process until liquid vapor is actually seen to ensure the tank does not overfill then shut off the hose fill lever prior to closing the screw valve, don't worry you won't actually be able to overfill it as long as the valve in the small tank is working properly. and do not open the bleeder on the hose during the fill process, this only wastes fuel.

I'd be afraid I'd open the wrong valve with my wrench and gas would start violently spewing out knowing my luck...
Here's my question. Can you buy a 100lb propane tank, have it filled, and buy a valve that will dump propane from it into one of those larger 500lb tanks? We have a tank at an old farm house that needs to be filled but the bridge needs work and there's no way a proper propane truck and cross it to fill things up......
I watched this but because I don't wanna wait for shopping I had my local propane store make me a hose... They charged $70. Hopefully it works
There are three things that any DIYer should leave to the professionals…1-gas…2-electric…3-water…
This video should convince everyone if you watching an instructional or how-to video on anything make sure the video feature unquestioned professional and not some random azz individuals WHO THINK they know what the hell they're doing. I mean no disrespect, but if i follow this guy to understanding propane, i might end up destroying the entire multiverse lol
Oooooo A How TO!
The hose bleeder is on the wrong side, its supposed to drain from valve to tank thats getting filled, emptying entire hose from liquid propane is wasting fuel
When you assembled all the parts they sent you, it was incorrectly assembled. The bleeder valve is installed in between the ball valve and the small tank connector. Just an FYI.
It DOES make a difference ;)
Be easier to put a tea connector and a quick connection past your regulator and plug Anything you need to run propane off of your big tank. instead of wasting all that gas?
Looks like Mayor Humdingers back at it again, wrecking havoc 'round Adventure Bay !!! We need Ryder and his team of pups … Paw Patrol is on a Roll !!!
Buddy try it agin when you perfect the procedure.I think you are dangerous to yourself.😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why not just hire a certified propane company to come out to your home and run an additional propane line to your outdoor grill space…problem solved you are welcome…
yep. dont figure it out first and then make a how to video just hit record and figure it out along the way... oh and if you could point out other unrelated projects you have neglected along the way that would be awesome! :)
wow, that is not at all what those are for. its a spitter valve on the side of the tank, and a pressure relief valve on the hose. you should not follow this guys instructions at all. scary bad.
Blue Rhino sales down 43% after
this video hit UA-cam....😂
Would this work the opposite way? For example, can I fill or transfer propane to an empty ASME tank from a smaller DOT tank?
yes but you would use the vapor port to do that with the smaller tank inverted.
As a licensed gas technician per NFPA54 and 58 codes, all do respect you should not be doing that or showing how to do it. I have seen many mistakes which have caused explosions. The tap you are on is for emergency removal of the LP product and should not be tampered with
Loser
Accident waiting to happen. Liquid propane released has the reirrigation effect of 44 degrees below zero. Put a fence and locked gate around it, to prevent a child or anyone from getting hurt.
if homeowners' insurance company knew of this, they might would cancel the policy. It's not worth the savings to take a chance like this.
Is this guy lucky his brain is still inside of his skull? I am surprised he didn't light a cigarette while waiting.
Just because you can buy a gizmo off "the ebay" so that you can do this DOES NOT mean it is a good idea to do it.
So you suggest hiring someone to come to your house to transfer propane from one tank to the other? How much does that cost?
I'm sure there must be a safe way to DIY this task at home. This guy seems pretty uncertain almost every step of the way so I wouldn't use this video as a DIY tool for myself. But this is something I'm looking into doing myself at home.
I'd appreciate any professional advice if you're willing to put that out there.
Propane in Pennsylvania right now is at $4.19, it's ca-raaaazy
I do this all the time and I’m still here
This guy never ever needs to fill another propane bottle……..just saying!!!!!
I Dont know why Americans are so scare about these tanks, Almost every country out there have propane tank inside their home for their stove...they need to change it themselves monthly. The house should not have any other fire on while doing it. No cigarettes, no fireplace, no candles until u sure that the tank is not leaking. All these things other country dont have in their home so they dont need to think about it lol
Yes put some chemicals on your lawn - that will for one get into the water table. (while you flush real fertilizer down the toilet)
City people are not too bright.
Nobody wants to hear about your lawn and the work you wanna do.
And what is that thing you're carrying in your hand god forbid you tell us what you bought on ebay to get propane, or maybe this video isn't about that
Can I buy this and hook it to any spot "under the hood" of the tank? I have a buried tank and can only see the spot under the hood.
I think this guy should’ve watched a video of how to do this before trying to make a video.
Get your facts straight. You are venting propane gas vapor and not air. You don't have air in your tank.
Can the next ‘how to’ be on something a little bit more dangerous???
Looks great from Bahrain!
This guy does not know the difference between a monkey wrench and a pipe wrench.
Take this video down!! As a service technician at a propane company, I advise anyone who watches this have a licensed propane technician come out and install and show you how to work the “ wet line” properly! You could do a lot of damage to yourself or worse!
Nope
Nice video. One tip I was given that I will pass along, if you are going to refill those tanks with the plastic label, remove the label, it traps moisture against the tank and can shorten the life of the tank.
Removing the label is done as a safety measure against static electricity build up.
2 years later and you’ve saved my life on this day lol
That’s not air you’re letting out, that’s propane vapor sir! You’re gonna get people hurt!
This looks like how not to do it we should make a new video when you know how to.
You know that you should be wearing thick gloves 😜.
Open the vent and leave it open until vapor start coming out and it’s full
The propane company is gonna freak out when he comes to fill the tank.
You are a brave soul ;) Now I also want to risk my life!!!!! So cool!
Working in a gas plant, this gave me anxiety lol.
I will hate being he's neibor...static discharges are a thing
Buy a jacket man, there's snow on the ground
I have one on my 500 gallon tank, installed by the gas man, a friend of mine. In the winter with a tank under 50% it’s slow to fill. So the way I was taught, disclaimer I’m am not giving advice just what I do.
-connect your portable tank as you did.
-open the small bleeder valve on the portable tank and leave it open while it fills. This allows it to vent and fill.
-open all valves
-let it fill until you see white liquid coming out of the bleeder valve on the portable tank.
-close the bleeder and all other valves and disconnect.
Now when your big tank is full and during warm weather months you will find it fills pretty quick. Not as fast as the a gas station as they have a pump. I love mine it’s very handy and much cheaper when your buying it in bulk from the gas man.
Josh.... This comment is such a breath of fresh air compared to all the other safety Sally comments. I was slightly worried but after doing it once I'm confident. That tank was 35% and it is winter Temps so I come summer... Things will likely be different
@@lawnrebel I was pretty worried myself the first couple times. My buddy the gasman assured me you can’t overfill these new style of valves as they have built in shut off valve. With that said if you find an older tank with the old style valve they fill much quicker. I look at it this way, some young guy or gal working at a quickie mart, received a few minutes of training is filling tanks with a pump system every day. Just don’t cousin Eddy it and all is well. Shitter’s full.
😂
That's exactly how it's done.
@@lawnrebel Keep in mind we are learning not only from you, but others commenting here, and learning it from scratch. The safety comments might not be as useful for you, but to us they are invaluable, and could perhaps save a life. Thanks to all !!!
Without a pump all you can expect is pressure equalization or about a gallon. Just go to the pump station at the gas station. This is amusing and scary at the same time. ridiculous.
You didn't see the liquid coming out the bleeder hole on tank valve? That indicates the tank is filled to proper level of 80%. It works excellent, just takes a little longer then a choking station that has a pump.
If your not comfortable, then don't do it. It's perfectly safe if you have any common sense. Just like filling your car. Don't smoke and don't get it on you.
This is probably about the most dangerous thing you can do with your propane tank. If that liquid valve on the 1000 gallon tank fails or gets stuck, you’ll get an uncontrollable release of every thing in the tank when that valve is removed.
Also he is lucky he didn’t get a freezer burn doing this without gloves. 8:42
Why would he get freezer burn screwing on the heater? That’s ehT your supposed to do
@@aelfwealld because the temperature of liquid propane when it escapes the tank is -44 degrees F I work for a propane company and been freezer burned from contact with it. That liquid valve on a tank is not something to use if you don't know the safety precautions leather gloves wont help much, you need special coated gloves for propane
@@willyskiltfreezer burn🤣 that’s what happens to food in your freezer. Freeze burn.
I did propane to in Midwest corn dryers used liquid valves all the time never once had one malfunction. But you are right if you don't know what you are doing, don't do it. Propane burns hurt, get special gloves!!
@aelfwealld you get burnt by liquid propane as it is extremely cold on those spit valves. The one on tank tells you when it is 80% full. Never overfill.
Read the directions numnuts. Lol...
There wasn't any
even if it’s empty don’t store a propane in your garage
Just undo the little screw on the small propane tank and when the bottle gets full and it starts coming out the relief valve it is full. I used to fill them at my job
Yeah I've seen them fill them so many times at the local campground where we can get them refilled. All they do is turn the pump on and then open the little screw that I did and it fills in seconds
I sell propane and propane accessories 😂😂😂
That big tank would make a nice bbq smoker!
Bobby, i sell propane and propane accessories.
Dude, you are an explosion looking to happen.
This is not a how to video more of a watch me figure this out video
So as you add propane, you open that little bleeder screw occasionally. It is connected to a tube that drops to the 80 percent full level. If you open it and gas comes out it is not air it is propane vapor. Close it. Check again and again until liquid spits out and that means you are done. The liquid has reached the tube sitting at the 80 percent level. Don't overfill. You need a layer of gas propane on top. As it gets warmer outside the pressure will increase which will cause some of the gas to condense to liquid. Without any gas space the relief valve will pop which could be a dangerous release of propane to atmosphere. If the relief valve doesn't work for example is old and rusty, the tank could rupture and boom.
That's because gas can be compressed but liquid cannot be compressed. You need the 20% margarine to be able to allow for expansion and only gas can contract and expand not liquid.
@@truckdriver8416 I can't believe the 20% is butter.

Much of what this guy says is wrong.
I know he doesn't set his mullet on fire but I was still waiting for it 🤣
It’s not the wheels that are bad on the Honda, nor is it the belt or transmission like many speculate. It’s the axle where it goes through the deck. It’s just poorly designed bushings that allow moisture and debris in. You can remove the assembly (it’s a real pain) and sand down the axles clean and smooth and then be diligent about lubrication thereafter. Has happened to me on 2 of them so far. It’s a design flaw that is fixed in the newest models.
I've also heard only US models have this issue. Other countries have a different design with that bushing.
