  • When you need to cut leather straps, you need a strap cutter. I like to build my own leather working tools, so in this video I will show you how to make a leather strap cutter. It is an easy woodworking project, for my leatherworking hobby. The result is a wonderfully working strap cutter that you can use as a belt cutter or for any leather working project that involves a strap of leather.

    thanks so much. I only had to watch a short bit of this to know I need to buy a strap cutter. I do not have the woodworking skills to build this. Glad you do and this is much better than the dismembering pieces in the three other how to's I watched. This is a quality tool I would be confident in using,

      Yes, that's what I thought when trying to find a video how to make one of these tools. All of them had razor blades sticking out the top or side and seemed too dangerous to me... I'm happy you enjoyed the video! Thank you very much for watching! Cheers, Tony!

      This is the perfect thing to try on and learn the skills.
      It's small, and messing up isn't messing up hundreds of dollars of wood. It's using scrap and glue. The tools are basic. You could use even less than what he did.
      This is a lot more than it needs to be. He spent the time to make it a nice looking tool, but a functional tool is comparably a lot simpler to make.
      There are lots of designs out there. Take a look and you'll find some simpler ones.
      I know this is a year late, but being able to learn how to make this stuff is incredibly rewarding. And maybe the one you bought could be upgraded or improved somehow.

    If you're glueing these pieces of wood together. Instead of trying to chisel out a perfectly square hole, Just cut some of the insides shorter, and glue it up with the square already in it.
    Final tip: A dash of salt on the glue helps hold the wood from sliding around while clamping.

    • @TonyNeedsHobbies
      @TonyNeedsHobbies  Рік тому

      Hi Adam,
      Another great idea, thanks! Chiseling was a challenge. I actually did it this way on purpose so that the hole is through the four pieces that are glued together. I think it might be a bit stronger this way (but actually don't have a clue if that's the case 😋).
      I really like you're final tip and am definitely going to use it in the future. Always struggling with slipping pieces of wood when trying to clamp them together. It's a very interesting suggestion and worth to try!
      Thanks again,
      Tony

    • @TonyNeedsHobbies
      @TonyNeedsHobbies  Рік тому +1

      Hello Jens, thanks for the compliments! The sandpaper strips provide some friction when when the slider with the blade is clamped, so that it doesn't move around when cutting thick leather. Good luck with your project! Tony

      @@TonyNeedsHobbies okay, I had a suspected that could be the reason why, it makes good sense. Did you learn than from looking at a factory made strap cutter or did you come up with that idea yourself? • @TonyNeedsHobbies

      No, the cheap factory made ones don't have it, I came up with it myself. A nice little improvement. Your idea is nice too. I always have to looked for the tool to adjust the strap cutter, so smart thinking on your end. Cheers!

      @@TonyNeedsHobbies Update: I just finished my strap cutter and it works like a charm! I just cut a few straps from my home tanned cattle leather. What an amazing tool and so satisfying to use. Again, thanks a lot for the your excellent instructions. Just like you, I made it bigger than the commercial ones and I think it makes for a better tool. If you want a new hobby I suggest bark tanning hides. SkillCult is very experienced in this craft and has made excellent videos making natural old school vegetable tanned leather.

    • @TonyNeedsHobbies
      @TonyNeedsHobbies  Рік тому +1

      You tan your own hides? That sounds like a very interesting thing to try out. I wouldn't know where to obtain untanned hides though. Hunting over here in the Netherlands is pretty much impossible - you need a whole bunch of trainings/permits/hunting grounds (which I don't own 😉). I'll Google around a bit to see if anything like that is possible. Thanks for planting the seed in my mind 🙂 Also appreciate your feedback a lot. I agree with you, the bigger tool works better, it's more stable and cuts more straight. Merry Christmas! Tony
