How To: Broken Gear Shift Lever (Custom 2017 Triumph Bonneville T100 Black!)

- If you've ever split your bike, you'll know that the gear-shift lever is one of the first points of impact when it hits the ground. Unfortunately, this is the second time this has happened to me, so I thought I'd make a video showing how you can easily swap it out for a new one without paying your local shop to do it for you.
Thanks for sticking with me, guys! Please subscribe, share, hit the thumbs up, and leave your thoughts below if you enjoyed this video! Ride on, Triumph Fam!
UPDATE: As I mentioned in the video, I will now be creating shorter videos w/ less content/video in an effort to facilitate a faster overall output rate (installing, recording, editing, & uploading). Hopefully, this will allow me to have more video content for the channel, quicker upload times, & provide a more enjoyable viewing experience.

Keep it up man! Amazing content!
Hey Conner- Just a heads-up-- when you drop a Triumph on the left side as your friend did yours, be aware that the shift rod (the internal engine component to which the shift lever is attached) is prone to bending. This is especially true in older models wherein the shift lever is not "sacrificial" but very very strong. I'm not sure if Triumph finally addressed this issue with the 2017s; perhaps they did. The fact that the shift lever broke (rather then bending) is perhaps a good sign? Nonetheless, be on the lookout for difficulty going into gears or difficulty shifting between gears, as this may be symptomatic of a bent shift rod. Chive on, and keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up! RK
Yeah, those gear change shafts can also bend from regular use. It's not really a good idea to give someone's foot a direct connection to finicky parts. Bobbers, thruxtons, and speedmasters all have external linkages due to the foot positions on those bikes, and likely never experience this issue. It's also not just the shafts, but the springs and selector arm.
@@christiancartmale1150 all the reports ive seen on this issue were with the 1200s and the 6 speed gearbox. Do you know someone directly that has had this issue with a 900/865?
Thanks for the video. Most of all showing the model on the package. 😆
I’m about to order one myself. 👍
When you put the gear shift lever back on, aren't you supposed to line up the notch on the bar?
Not entirely sure what you mean, but in this case I don't think it's too big of a deal to just wing it like I've done here. It looks good to me and has been operating perfectly.
Hey mate I have only just come across your channel and have now subscribed. Have just watched all your videos and in my opinion the longer videos are better 👌🏻
Keep up the good work!
Curious if your bike experienced any downshift issues some time after you damaged the lever?
None!
@@connorkeith1881 Glad to hear it! My t120 has had the gearchange shaft fixed three times. I think itès a part problem with triumph but the one time happened 1200km after i had a tip over and I paid the bill like a sucker. Probably should have pushed triumph to good will the part like they did for my most recent repair. oh well.
@@christiancartmale1150 How much did it cost? It’s still an issue on the new T120s :(
Never let someone ride your bike.
Where did you order your replacement shifter from? And do you happen to know if the same one would work on a Thruxton?
im sure the same would work on a thruxton. And I just bought the replacement from my local triumph dealership
Great videos man, watched them all. I own a T120 black and just installed the SW Motech silver aluminium engine guard as well as their crash bars. Quite a bit of work I must say and that could be an idea for your next videos!
Also look into the black British Customs chain guard, nice upgrade to the overall look.
Have anymore bike videos coming out??
Wear any black leather biker greaser type jackets?
Levi’s jeans in particular??
Your video are great ! Keep going :) Cheers from another T100 owner.
Thank you!!! So happy to hear. Cheers dude! :)
Hey man, what's the exhaust on your T100? Seems like a short British Customs, but i can't find the black finish on their website.
Superb bike, it's super cool...now the next mod is about the tail i suppose, that's right? ;-)
Stefano, I have the "Shorty Dominator" exhaust from Cone Engineering :) I don't think they have pictures on their site, but you can order it in the black finish at checkout. I'll probably do a quick video about them too. Hope this helps!
Also, thanks for the compliments on the bike 👏😎 Still deciding what to do for the next video, either exhaust and mirrors, or front/tail mini fenders. What do you think?
Connor Keith Thank you for your answer. I have same tastes as you and your bike is exactely as i would like mine. My only doubts is what do to with the tail (rear mudguard, stop light and indicators). I think it's the hardest part to modify without changing the vintage style of the bike.
I saw a beautiful rear part from Baak Motorcycle and Rizoma too.
For my tastes, Rizoma is too modern...so i prefer the Baak tail.
Thanks Stefano! But yeah, I know what you mean. I agree that Rizoma is a bit too modern, so I went with the custom parts from Baak. Maybe wait to see what it looks like on my bike before you make a decision to purchase.
Connor Keith Wow, that's amazing. That's the proof we really have exactely the same tastes in terms of motorcycle! I can't wait to see your next mods...
WHERE ARE YOU MATE, I BEEN WAITING FOR YEARS FOR YOU TO CHANGE YOU BACK INDICATORS
Nice im 24 just bought myself the same bike and i live in oakland! planning to customizing it soon. Nice vids
I used to have Harley 48 and I want to have triumph bonneville bobber and liked your video thanks
I didn't realize you were also in San Francisco... I have a T120.
Where did you buy it from ?
From the dealership
Turn your music down.
Lol
Hi. where did you buy the replacement? its says made in Taiwan. Having a hard time sourcing it and would appreciate any info.
I just bought it through my local triumph dealership
Did you have any trouble getting the pedal/knob off of the bent old gear shift to reuse it? Struggling here.
No actually, my broken one just screwed right off :/
Ratz. The bolt on mine must have bent slightly. I’ll have to get some strength on it.
