I've been working night shifts for nearly ten years. Very hard to balance family life, stay healthy and keep upbeat. Bonus about night shifts is that you get the World to yourself, empty roads, no lines in supermarkets, and the good feeling of driving home when everyone is going to work! Great tips btw👮🏻🇬🇧

5 years and counting in night shift and sometimes it´s easier than others (sleeping during the day that is). And balancing social life can be tricky, it´s hard for people to understand your life rhythm sometimes but over time even they start to get it when they see you super tired couple of times. And big respect for anyone doing it with kids in tow! Not sure I could do it =D At the same time the empty roads in the morning (especially Sundays) feels so amazing, having several days off at a time to balance life out (at least we do here in Finland) has allowed me to study for my Masters while working, not sure I could´ve pulled that off otherwise. Many positives about night shift, and yes some people are more adaptable to it. I´ve always been a night awol and stayed up at least until 4am. Rock on all night workers, no matter what your profession!

I completely agree! Been doing mine for over a year, 12 hrs shifts 5 to 6 days a week.. It's very hard to have a social life or spend time with loved ones and go to appointments, take care of things around the house, and REST and relax!

I am a nurse and have been working the night shift for 15 years. Here is what I do: I stay up until 1 or 2pm and sleep until 9pm. When I get up I have my dinner and I have to be at work by 11pm. I have 1 piece of fruit during the night and drink tons of water when I get home I have breakfast. I go for walks and during the winter I do my Leslie Sansone walking tapes. This has worked for me.

Omg thought I was the only guy staying awake up until 1 or 2 pm and waking up at 10 pm. But oh well... high five it’s pretty good to hear from a person like u say that. We feel more rested during night shift than going to sleep from 8 or 9 am and waking up at 3 or 4 pm and staying awake till’ the next day 👌🏻👊🏻👍🏻

I've worked permanent night shifts for over 6 years now and have a reputation for never being sick and always having bags of energy at work. My biggest tip is to avoid blue light before bed. You can buy glasses that filter blue light and I wear these as soon as I get home. Blue light (which btw, mobile phone screens give off) blocks melatonin production making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Of course you need a good eye mask too. The neoprene ones that are moulded around the nose are great as they let nothing through (although I am a small head so have to stuff the gaps with cotton wool!). I also have a light box that I sit by when I wake up, which tricks my body into thinking it's day time. If you hack your biology in this way, you can avoid a lot of the health issues associated with night shift as it's no different to being in a different time zone as far as your body knows.

This is what I have been doing but without the light box. Its pretty much like living in a different time-zone to everyone. Also eating a handful of pistachio is incredible for melatonin to improve sleep efficiency. Avoid junk and eat whole food plant based.

This is the best video i could find on how to survive night shifts. The best tip was not to consume statistics on how bad night shifts are for your health. Being positive and not worrying about what may happen to you is the key. There are a lot of people in world working in night shifts. Just love your work, do whatever you can to keep yourself healthy and happy. 😊

    • @redlipmarketing
      @redlipmarketing Рік тому +1

That is correct. And remember we lived in tribes, someone had to stay up to make sure we survived the night. Some of us are naturally better attuned to the night-early morning. This coupled with intermittent fasting and excercise I bet will get most people throughout.

I've been working nightshift for over 2.5 years now in pharmacy. I love it! I work 7 nights straight 12 hour shifts and then I'm off for 7 days. It seems as though my body has adjusted well, but I am interested in light therapy at the beginning of my shift bc I tend to turn to sugar some nights when I feel that lull (I"m extremely sensitive to caffeine and won't sleep if I have any). I stretch at work, too. Being on your feet all night really takes a toll on your body. Yoga, meditation, and stretching does wonders for me so I'm glad you included it in this video. Thanks for all of your great tips!

At almost 59 yrs old, I've accepted my first ever RN night shift! I was hired as a night supervisor! I'm terrified of the transition, both working nights and to step into supervisor shoes while I am transitioning! I am trying to fill my mind with all these ways to not only successfully accomplish this huge change but to excel at it. Your hints helped me to contemplate some hints that I'd not even though of, such as stay positive EVERY day, AND advice on how to maintain that positive attitude. Thank you for sharing. I plan to use the night shift to get my MSN... nurses that do not further their education in today's world are going to lose out on getting the positions they want even if they are well liked and qualified. Believe me, I've just lived that and it was really discouraging. I was so busy trying to stay busy with the registries that I felt like I couldn't go to school, and felt stuck. I am grateful for this job which gets me out of registry work, and I will make it work. But well, it is making me feel anxious.

I try to stay positive but I really miss having a more normal life, with a normal schedule and feeling fully rested. I take melatonin 10mg most days when I have to sleep and it works great for me, it helps me sleep through the day and I don't wake up groggy. Anyway, love your channel and keep up the great videos! xx Olivia

Thank you so much! I did fulltime night shifts for 3 years (9pm-5am, Mon-Fri) and now work a job where I have rotating shifts (5 weeks of dayshifts, 2 weeks of nights) and I've found it SO hard to find resources, tips and ideas for shift workers. So often all you find is "DID YOU KNOW NIGHT SHIFTS CAN KILL YOU" lol. That's nice... SOMEONE has to work those nights! Help them out instead of scaring them. You definitely helped and reassured me a lot! Those 3 years of fulltime nights had a huge impact on my health, and now I'm trying to minimize the impact of the rotating shifts. As a migrant my shift work has helped me start a career in a foreign country in an industry that I would have otherwise never broken into!

I’ve just stumbled onto your video because at 46 I’ve been working night shift in retail for almost 6 yrs and it’s starting to take its toll. I love it because no customers and you can get tons of things done without the hustle and bustle of dayshift hours. Also during the day I can get alot of errands done without putting pto for. But lately I haven’t been sleeping as much as I should and my caffeine fix is getting worse and I feel groggy a lot. But your advice of don’t worry if you can’t sleep it’ll come great after work, and also eat fruits and veggies instead of microwaveable junk and drink lots of water I hope will help. Thanx again.

I love your comment about not over-consuming information about how bad nightshift is for the body. I think most people just do it for a short/specific amount of time. You will bounce back! Reading more information will just make you more anxious and contribute to your sleeplessness. If you take good care of your diet, exercise, and mental health, night shift should be doable (albeit hard!)

Happened to come across this video while looking to guide an orientee regarding getting adequate sleep. BTW, great tips, thank you! I can only add that it is so important to start and stay committed to a sleep routine, it takes time & patience, don’t stress out about missing out on sleep, it happens - just get back on your regimen & keep at it. Additionally, develop healthy, positive relationships with your peers, colleagues, & stay away from negative, toxic energy as it builds stress - & stress impedes sleep. I love what you said about finding something to do that you love & pursue that, I’m going to work on that! 👍

Great video and great advice! I agree with you, being a nurse myself, something I find so important in my life that helps me in my work is exercising everyday and healthy eating. Keeping your body in good shape will keep your mind in good shape. Something else I love to do and I see someone has already pointed this out in the comments and that is to go for a long run everyday. When I finish my night shift, even though I'm already pretty tired at that point, I go for a long run in the park which makes me sleep so much better. I also agree with you on finding things you really enjoy to do in your spare time. Me and my hubby both have stressful jobs so when we get time off we love to drive to the beach to surf and take weekends away travelling together. Enjoying the simple things in life and having that time to unwind :)

I work at 2 different places, one is all night shift and the other can be day or night so I've been stressing out about getting enough sleep which has not helped me sleep. But I'll try not to worry about that anymore.

I use lavender or vetiver oils. Just massage them behind my ears (in the bony area) and they work great! I even add a drop in 4oz of water - the benefits are the same. I also use ear plugs and an eye mask as well because I'm a light sleeper.

I feel for you been there done that. Around 3years old my daughter went to half day day care. That's when I got off at 4am dad took her to day care I picked her up at noon. My surprise son though ugh had to go back to work son was 6 months old was with and the his dad left me when he was 2 1/2. Together 15yrs I was a mess. I put him in daycare. He had a speech delay so went through a year of appt. And testing to get him into early intervention preschool. Except I got off work at 730am his bus pick up at 920am and off at anywhere between 12 and 12:15. Not gonna lie slept through few times to get him at bus stop. Then he'd get home at 1st it was great cause he'd want to take a nap. Didn't last long. But those 2 years bout killed me. Now he started kindergarten and they are full time. Whew I made it. I race to get home to put them on the bus sleep . Till bout 3 o'clock they get home around 4pm. I'm there for them after school dinner time and bed time snuggles before I go to work. I tried doing daytime. I seen them less and was to tired to clean up or make dinner. And literally seen them for maybe 2 hours before bedtime routine. That was a way more of a bummer.
Have to admit the system worked a whole lot better when dad was at home. Child care has been a big challenges. But then again It damaged our relationship between each other. Looking back I now realize how important it is to go to bed together. It becomes a shift change between you and your spouse. I tell the younger ones that start if your married to get off the grave shift. It distance between you and your spouse.. unless you are in a secure soild relationship graveyard doesn't work well for marriages and day time functioning before 2pm. But it works great if your your a college student or if your kids are in school during the day. You gets to spend more time with kids and still connect and have dinner as a family.

That is rough! I'm going thru same thing. I work 11 30 PM and get off 8 am. My idea preference is to sleep at 9 am wake up at 2 PM. Have my meal and coffee and go back to bed by 6 PM but my toddler wont let me have that 6 PM long nap so I get maybe 2 hours in my evening nap. Gets me through the night shifts but ideally its crappy.

I've been doing night shifts for about a year and a half now. Started doing them right after high school in July 2018. Got a job at Tim Horton's (Canadian coffee shop) and got hired full time on the overnight shifts. I worked there for almost a year and then got a job in a gym (where I work now actually) and I work the overnight shift in the gym too. I'm so used to them that I'm usually up all night even on my nights off. Once in a blue moon, I'll get some sleep throughout the night and be up earlier than I usually am. I love the shifts though as it's not busy and I go home in the morning when everyone is going to work. My tips for people who are thinking of getting a night shift job or got hired for one but didn't start yet: 1. Don't wait until you start to get in the habit of being up all night. If you do this, it'll be very hard for you when you start. Get in the habit of it before you start. This is something I wish I did before my first overnight shift. 2. Get a good sleep during the day. Most people who do days and nights get up at lunch time after working all night. Don't do this. You'll be tired for your shift if you do.

After 1am, there are not so many patients, I will start to meditate and grab some sleep, sometimes several minutes, sometimes can rest for an hour, next morning get home , have breakfast, shower, dinner, fall sleep about 1.pm, sleep for 2 hours, do yoga, I am a fresh person again.

I noticed if I watch tv I fall asleep but off and on. If I sleep in my room with no tv I sleep solid. I also noticed if I get more then 7 hours sleep I feel horrible. My 1st day off I stay awake all day so I can get on regular schedule on my days off.

I am working on rotation schedule for almost 3 years now and if there is something I learned from it is : When you do the "flip" to work at night or you sleep during the day for the next night, don't force your system if you don't get to sleep. When it happens, I get up, I eat a light snack or I drink water and I go back in my room. Another tips that helps for me is to turn off any electronics like my phone because of the waves it produce that can disturb the brain during sleep.

I like the extra amount of time I have during the day as I know have to work night shifts five days a week. I work form 9 p m to 6 a m and it is very hard for me because I am 57 years old and have not been used to this sort of schedule. It's a very good company and worth the sacrifice but I see I am not alone in feeling so tired for the first week or so. We just had our two days off we get that after the fifth day so that gives us time to catch up on some sleep. I wish so much I could feel like this is so terrific and have so much energy all night long but it's taking a lot out of mentally and physically. Maybe, it's something one has to get used to. I don't know. That's why I am watching videos and reading many articles to keep me going. Thanks, for the tips. *I am not a nurse by the way. I now work on a Production line for a food company.

I've worked night shifts a few times. I'm back on a new job, working 12 hr graveyards. The problem is how to handle the weekend, then back to graveyards when weekend is over. Should I stay awake all night on weekends and get off the schedule? That's incredibly difficult. I'm too tired. Don't know how to ha dle this

Thank you very much for this video! It really made me feel better about my upcoming night shifts in my new job. From the day after tomorrow I'm gonna start night shifts that goes from 4pm to 10am of the following day (sort of like 2 shifts in a raw) and I'm quite lost about what to do about my sleep. When I finish work I wouldn't go to work again until the following day at 4pm again, so would still have they day, the night, and the morning till my next shift.
So I'm considering wether it would be good to take my 2 hours break during the night to have a nap and then just stay awake until the following night. Do you think I'd rather forget that and just sleep as soon as I get home?

Ear plugs, fan, blackout curtains, Passion Flower extract (Vitamin Shop - natural sleep aid, similar to Chamomile, but stronger), and guided meditation from the Insight Timer app (android).
I drink ginsing and mate teas instead of coffee; more of a mental stimulant rather than physical stimulant.
I make myself leave the floor (if possible) and do a quick guided meditation to reset my mind/body.
If I am really amped up, I'll take a minute to write out my frustrations (unfiltered) until I feel relieved, and then shred it.
    Hope this helps!
