I love that the last lyrics 'god loves luanna, praise be ahmen' not only goes again what the husband said 'no one will ever love you' but also implies the revenge was something Luanna specifically wanted.
So glad to hear a 35MM cover that isn’t The Ballad of Sara Berry, also a pretty dark but cathartic tune. I’m glad other people remember that musical, wish I could have seen it live. Excellent!🎉
Is it wrong to stop listening to the song on the happy note when Luanne is just swimming along the river, free from her abusive husband and you just envision her floating amongst duckweed and lotus flowers with her hair spread out in the water and the sun shining through willow trees and she's just smiling widely without a care in the world? I don't think it is! 😭
This song always makes me think the birth of a banshee. Luanne enduring such miserable conditions in life, finally thinking she escaped when she swims across the river. Only to have the bastard murder her by drowning her in that river. Then she returns after death to howl and scream, ensuring none that treat their partners badly will ever find rest.
banshee wouldn't be the right term then, they are spirits who warn of coming death, not ones that take vengeance. from what i know they aren't actually ghosts either so
@@ghostly1225 I will admit that my knowledge on banshee lore is rusty at best, So I might have confused them with wraiths, as those are typically more of the vengeful spirit types.
So can confirm she's a dnd depiction of Banshee based off the official DND description "Banshee appears as a transluscent image of it's former self in life"
@@ghostly1225 Yes, Banshee in folklore are types of faeries (or fae if you prefer that term). They were domestic servants of humans, taken in by kind families for food and necessities in exchange for housework, and when their human family dies, they scream so much their vocal cords break. Their screams "fortell" death, as their families died
I love this song and how it tells a story. The whole story song genre isn’t as mainstream / is more categorized as a subgenera, so finding good songs is hard to find. I’m so excited to have more versions of this song to listen to! Thank you!
If you're interested, the whole musical is a compilation of different stories as songs! They're each based around photographs (hence the "35mm", but I'd highly recommend even just listening to the songs. Cut You A Piece, Twisted Teeth, and The Ballad of Sara Berry are some of my personal favorites!
for a solid second, i thought that she was gonna cut up the dog. The first part gave me joy and then the fury hit me out of left field like a damn sniper especially the line, "half sad his wife is dead now." Motherfucker felt pure rage at that one. AND THEN CAME THE REVENGE! OH THE REVENGE! AHAHHAHAHAHA
OH MY GOSH, FINALLY SOMEONE MADE A COVER OF THIS SONG. Dis’ one of my favorite among the 34mm Musical exhibition. My life would be so complete if you also did some of the others. Edit: also love how the artist captured how I imagined luanne in my head. With how she pulls the chains I could just picture that being the moment in her husband’s POV when she came back. Also that middle section was just perfection.
Man it was great to listen to this song again after having heard it a long time ago. Tragic, but an absolutely amazing song. One thing that I realized after reading the lyrics that I didn’t catch the first time, and which absolutely chilled me, was the line about how “stare at the bastard…who beat you there.” It struck me that that line was absolutely brilliant and heartbreaking in its double meaning. Cause not only did he make it there before her, he beat her there, he also literally beat her there. To death. Dang that hurt.
bro I love this song sm- I mean, it’s a dark story, but I love the overall vibe. I grew up in the south, and it vividly reminds me of blues festivals and old blues men that would play on street corners and during Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans. Ik it’s weird, but the overall flow of the lyrics, the way the instruments sound, and the actual way the lyrics are written just reminds me of the place I grew up🤍🤍
I can tell you listened 35mm: In focus! I love that you included the "They say..." she drowned herself in the swamp in wild despair. It's just two extra words, but it really hammers in what actually happened to her. Love the cover! Would LOVE to see On Monday, the Party Goes With You, or Twisted Teeth!
My opinion: i think this story is set up during the eighteenth century because the "Louisiana wants war" makes me think about the American civil war, second, the "no, he was never nice but now he's cruel" makes me think that Luanne married mostly out of convenience (as many women in the past did to survive), so her husband at first was just indifferent and cold behaved, but then he started abused her, and three, from the song we understand Luanne is a very religious woman and won't leave her husband because of the bibble verses, makes me think about a back then housewife who couldn't divorce thanks to mentality and society and so used her religion to keep doing
Except that the mention of a truck kind of throws a wrench in that theory. Also you mean the nineteenth century, the eighteenth century would be the 1700s.
I agree with the other commenters that the truck sets it farther forward to at least 40's/50's, but if it helps I can assure you the South never stopped wanting their "second shot" so the lyric still holds true at any point after the Civil War.
Amazing cover!!! This musical needs more attention besides just The Ballad of Sara Berry lol. I think your voice would really suit Make Me Happy, The Party Goes With You, or Good Lady! Or Twisted Teeth, I know you like your vampires!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa it's so passionate and powerful. This is now my favourite rendition of this song. it's like you've become Luanne in order to sing this cover.

YES I LOVE THIS SONG AND YOU
Luanne’s fat lip is drying
The bastard’s bacon frying
The shiner on her eye gone bust and bleeding
He shouts, “Girl, set the table”
But he know she ain’t able
Her arms done broke
Hung limp like yolk
And softly she’s repeating
Leave Luanne
Why don’t you march out that door
Southern woman he ain’t no good to you
Leave Luanne
Louisiana wants war
But it’s you who’s dying on her ruby plains
And yet, Loyal Luanne remains
Ever since he got him laid off
His sanity’s just made off
No he was never nice but now he’s cruel, he rapes her
Yet she don’t fess how he treats her
Cause a Bible verse says it won’t get worse
And she won’t be a fool
You won’t ever
Leave Luanne
Cause if you march out that door
His truck will be gunning for you
No you won’t, leave Luanne
Or he’ll give you “What for?
You got hearts where you should have had brains”
So Loyal Luanne remains
Someone’s howling
Screams like sighing in battered breath
Grating, growling
Never dying
In a fate worse than death
But months of such conditions
Turn laymen to logicians
And tonight the bastards sleeping like a log
So she plucks the kitchen cleaver
Creeps to the roped up lab retriever
And she cuts the rope
And hope on hope
She starts to shout
“Your dogs got out”
She’s got her chance
With no back glance
She runs out to the bog
Screaming, screaming
Leave Luanne
You got a life left to live
On a house hanging off the Golden Coast
Leave Luanne, you won’t forget nor forgive
And you don’t feel the stings, the rips and scrapes
As finally Luanne escapes
Swim, Luanne! Swim, Luanne!
And in the swamp of beeches
Oh, as the preacher preaches
As a light
In the night
Push through the marsh and brushes
As the blood inside you rushes
Left and right
With all your might
Until you reach the bank
And you crawl onto the bank
And you feel a little yank on your hair
And stricken, stare at the bastard
Who beat you there
The bastard lies in bed now
Half sad his wife is dead now
She drowned herself in the swamp in wild despair
He thinks he used to love her
But push it came to shove her
A wife disposed
A life case closed
And no one seems to care to
Grieve Luanne
Now no one’s on his shoulder
Yet his mattress don’t feel colder
In fact it's hellish hot, and the air is dank and steamy
Yet his body starts to shiver
When the window cracks a sliver
And a fiery fog
From the miry bog
Poors in the room
In a sticky gloom
And there the man
See’s dead Luanne
He’s terrified, but he keeps his pride
Cause he knows that he ain’t dreaming
And he starts screaming
“Leave Luanne,
Hell sent you back here for more
Cause ain’t no one ever loved you”
But said Luanne,
“I’ve come to settle a score”
And she shows him her feet are bound in chains
And loyal Luanne
Remains and remains
And remains and remains
Someone's howling
Screams like sighing
Grating, growling
Never dying
In a fate worse than death
Leave Luanne,
She cries her miserable wail
So the bastards will never sleep again
No, no reprieve Luanne
She brings their souls down to hell
A caution to the cruelest of men (a caution to the cruelest)
God loves Luanne
Praise be
Amen
Love this song
