Like I said in my community post, chilling and challenging but I like how she turned out. Definitely pushed my comfort zone, but that's a good thing.

for those who don't know the story of this character, I'll tell it here (Contains spoilers)
She is part of a musical that tells the story of 6 teenagers who died in an accident on a roller coaster, the corpses of 5 of them were identified, except hers, which was found decapitated, and when the six arrived in the afterlife, they played a game to finally vote on who deserved to come back to life
All the participants in this game have told a little bit about themselves in these songs, but as seen in the song by "Jane", she doesn't remember any information about herself at all, and with that, she wins the game and is given a second chance to live, as everyone else has had a life with memories except her
It ends up having a good ending, where Jane's whole life (who is also revealed to be named Penny) plays on a screen, there she had a good childhood, grew up, got married, gave birth to children, raised a family, worked, aged and passed away peacefully by age, the other 5 characters passed to the afterlife peacefully

I love this version of Jane- in the play she simply sounds desperate as she sings.
Here she is frustrated, as if she is facing the fact the choir can’t give her the answers she needs.
She knows she’s human but doesn’t know what being human / alive means.
For the majority of the play, the choir shuns her.
Can’t fault them- she is a waking morbid existential crisis with a human body with a porcelain dolls head.
So the frustration she feels is also wanting to be part of the group, but unable to do so.
Of course she doesn’t realize she is non-verbally communicating her frustration. She is just desperate for a name, and doesn’t realize she is also desperate to not be an outsider.
Which makes the New Birthday Song more impactful-
They can’t give Jane her name but they can make her feel human.

Maybe you don't know where the black eyes come from (if you do, don't bother read what's following, I'm gonna explain the context of the show)
This song is from the musical theater "Ride the Cyclone". Six teens die during a ride in a roller coaster. They end up in the afterlife, with Karnak, a magical creature, that propose them to bring one of them back in life. This character has been decapitated in the accident, and no one found her head. She remains unidentified, and names Jane Doe, as all unidentified female corpses. Even she, in the afterlife, has no idea who she was. She is wearing a doll's head, I don't know exactly why. To be less scary ? To simply talk, hear and see ?
This song is her attempt to prove the other teens SHE deserved to go back to life (she's not selfish, they all have their song). She is lamentating about the pain of not having memories, and not being able to peacefully go to the afterlife, and to be stuck with "John" (Doe. Male corpses)

I've never heard of this song or the musical it's from, but I knew just from the title that this was going to be a haunting and gut-wrenching song. You (and the original writers) certainly did not fail to execute on that expectation. Amazing work!

nobody asked but its from a musical called ride the cyclone and the person whos singing was beheaded in a rollercoaster accident, but her head was never found, so the coroner declared her a "jane doe" aka the term for a female with an unknown identity. This song is her in the afterlife singing about her knowing nothing about her life or past.

Someone wrote that the high notes imply that Jane's screams as she was decapitated by the roller coaster (which is true).
I think that those ahs that go from high to low is the actual action of her beheading. Screaming before her voice dies away. Also, love the song

I've heard it said that the original song didn't call for Jane to sing the descending notes, only for the piano to play them. But the actress sang them anyway one day, and the director loved it so much that they changed it to be sung that way. I'm so glad they did it this way!

I like to imagine that in this version of Jane, after hearing everyone’s desires and wishes and life’s, she longs to be part of it as well, but instead of feeling hopeless, she feels human rage.

    Some might say we're released
    Pushing daisies, deceased
But we all know the worms must be fed
    There's just one lingering fear
Oh my soul, is it here?
Or is it rotting somewhere with my head?
Oh my soul oh my soul
Oh my soul oh my soul
    Ooh ooh
    Ahh ahh ah
Oh no soul, and no name
And no story, what a shame
Cruel existence was only a sham?
Oh Saint Peter, let me in!
You must know where I've been
Won't you tell me at last who I am?
Who I am who I am
Who I am who I am
    Ooh ooh
    Ahh ahh ah
And from the ground, beneath my feet
I hear the anguish of the street
    A choir never complete
And like an old forgotten tune
A song that no one knows forgot how it goes
Just john and me forever eternally, Jane Doe
    And I'm askin' why lord
If this is how I die, lord
Why be left with no family and no friends?
    Ooh
    I've got no celebration
    Just this consolation
Time eats all his children in the end
    Ahhh
A melody floats through the air
When silence falls, does no one care?
    Does anyone care?
    Another sad, forgotten tune
Another song that no one knows
So that's how it goes! Just john and me
    Forever eternally, Jane Doe
    And she's asking "why, lord?"
Why, oh why, oh why, oh why?
"This is no way to die, lord!"
No one to sing, no one to sigh
Now that all is said and done
Isn't there anyone to tell me who I am?
    No singing songs of celebration
(Ah ah ah ah) just this sorry speculation
    (Aah ahh)
    Like john I'll be eternally
A forgotten name, some lost refrain
    Just "Jane" jane
    Doe!
A melody floats through the air
When silence falls, does no one care? Jane
    Doe
