I was in a taxi last year in turkey. The driver was a young kid . He was playing 80s music. He loved anything UK from the 80s but had never heard of big country . I showed him this clip and said he should listen to the crossing. 2 weeks later when he arrived to take us back to the airport he was playing this when we got in the car. He said that he was sharing this with his friends locally and they all loved it. He looked so happy. Music is for all to share. Share the love RIP Stuart 👍👍
Whilst living in London in my early 20s, I got a ticket to a Big Country concrrt in Glasgow. 2 friends and I drove up, but Stuart was ill and cancelled. I was broken hearted, but didn't give up. I was an Aussie living in London and it wasn't long before I got o see BC in Kentish Town and in Brixton. The best. Now I live in Switzerland and still love them🥰. Yes, RIP Stuart and lotsa love to his family and friends.
You probably dont care but if you're stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all the new series on instaflixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last days xD
@Abdullah Ryan yea, have been watching on Instaflixxer for years myself :D
The best band off the 80s
Right on!, way cool!
I’ve never heard a band that sounded anything like Big Country. They were so utterly original. Their music had a magic to it that is almost indescribable yet impossible to deny.
Runrig are quite similar. Both brilliant bands
Their lyrics and passion are awesome too.
I agree with your comment smiles to you
Stuart Adamson was a great song writer. U2 THE Edge said I wish I could of written songs like Stuart
It's a shame alcohol took him young
Gawd. The boys are delivering the goods! And on live TV. No easy feat.
Tony Butler is a monster on that bass.
They always delivered!!...
Live they really came alive
Tony and Mark were a perfect partnership and backbone of many a great song with and without Big Country.
They were born to play live & the music always sounded the same as the record. Loved them & saw them many times. RIP Stuart ❤️
The Pretenders, 'My City Was Gone' the tune the got TB the Big Country gig,Stuart reached out to him to join the band after that tune...both on top of their game!
Greatest live performance on the Tube ever by a band . Unreal by Stuart on Guitar and rest of the lads . The performance is mind blowing and still gets better every time I listen to it . The man is sorely missed to this day . We miss you Stuart . Rest easy big man 😢
A band who were nearly always better live than on their recordings. Astounding musicianship
What a time to be alive, what a zeitgeist, when you could go to the record shop and buy the latest Big Country, U2, The Alarm, Sisters of Mercy, Souxsie and the Banshees latest releases. All different all great. Thanks for the music Stuart.
5pm on a Friday.. Channel 4. Jules & Paula, with interviews by Muriel Gray.. I'm 53 now...
The Cure....sold out 2 x London Gigs recently...2nd because of demand for tickets...all tickets gone in an hour i was reliably informed by their Manager.
Echo and the Bunnymen , Simple Minds , Waterboys , Jesus and the Mary Chain , Ultravox , Fad Gadget , the Fall , Flock of Seagulls , Comsat Angels , Blancmange , China Crisis , Gary Numan & Tubeway Army...etc etc....best times ( + music ) EVER!!
So pleased to have seen them live . Eppiiiccc .
Simple Minds New Gold Dream incredible album, probably ties with The Crossing as Scotland's best ever album.
People rage on about Bohemian Rhapsody being an absolute epic ...but in my eyes... this is right up there alongside it.
An absolute classic ....and what a fitting finalé on the album.
Better that it for me.
Truly wish I could've been there...... or at least had the pleasure of seeing Stuart play Live. 😢
Nowhere near bohemian rhapsody.
Queen encapsulated many music genres, big country used Scottish riffs, no comparison.
Nothing here that can be compared to Queen in anyway shape or form but this band has a sound that was probably more regional than universal. Stuart was an able player and a good song writer but like a one trick pony that evolved along the journey from The Skid's. But look at Status Quo? Another one trick pony too. Again a regional band but legendary in their sound.
One of the best drummers of all time totally underrated
Real ones know his talent.
he was ok - he was no clem burke but he was ok
@@discharge29 Mark Brzezicki is one of the best drummers out there which is why he has played for not only Big Country , he has also played with the Cult, Ultravox, From the Jam, Procol Harum, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Roger Daltrey, Fish from Marrillion, Steve Harley, Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, The Pretenders, Thunderclap Newman, Midge Ure, Pete Townshend and many others. Brzezicki was also the sole drummer on Shine, the second (and final, to date) English-language studio album by Swedish singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad of ABBA. I would like to add Big Country where one of the best bands to come out of the 80's IMO
He was in demand. He continued an active session career and was out of BC for two spells when he was working with the Cult and Procol Harem
The way this magnificent song slowly builds and builds makes my heart race. Absolutely stunning. Stuart Adamson with the ebow ♥️
This song has everything. Masterclass. I'm still sad at why Stuart decided enough was enough. Wd loved him and still do. Massive talent. Immortal in the music he left behind.
He was absolutely class ,.,I totally admire when he decided to call time .,.,been close myself
@@redsky106Hang in there. People love you.
stay strong man, things always change, that's the wonder of life @@redsky106
Even to this day 'The Crossing' is the best debut album ever made.
GOD BLESS U PAL IT WAS A MASTERPIECE
The first 3 albums are still my best albums to this day
Hands. Down.
i agree, the best debut album ever.
I love 'The Crossing' but I think their masterwork is 'Steeltown'
Big Country were the first band I ever saw live, Avoneil leisure centre in Belfast in 1984. I was 14. This band have created some of the most sublime, melodic, emotional music I've ever had the pleasure to listen to, their music fills my heart with joy. I still miss Stuart but I firmly believe that for as long as we have his music he will never leave us, he just doesn't come around this way anymore. His light will shine brightly forever.
well said bud, first band I saw Also . 1988 in Embra. Different class.
Your name will never die, Stuart Adamson
Favorite song from my favorite band back in the 80's! The original Scottish sound has yet to be replicated!
Runrig too!
I still listen to Stuart's voice and their music every day ...I miss them ....a lot ...
you are not alone my friend.. Still on many of my play lists' to this day.
Even having seen Stuart play live three times I never saw the raw power and energy behind the guitar and vocals. This is off the scale. Brilliant man.
The best live band l've ever seen. Period.
Me too. Absolutely fantastic musicians.
This is like three or four songs composed into one. It jams; even more so live. I wish I could have been there. This band is so underrated and Stuart was a musical genius. R.I.P. and thanks for the great tunes! 🎶
Absolutely feckin incredible..no band on the planet could match them live back then..God bless Stuart Adamson.x
I want to find the 36 people who downvoted this and hug them and tell them it's gonna be okay. Something rough must be going on in their lives 😟
Cyber huge to you that was handsomely beautiful sincerely your very welcome
All 4 are outstanding musicians.
Pure brilliance. Will watch this all of my life....over and over
Together they were a complete package.
Stuart Adamson once said - "Drums and guitars are all you'll ever need". If this isn't proof of that then there never will be. This is fecking awesome.
Not a fan of synth pop then.
All I’ll ever need = Stu on guitar + Brzezicki on drums.
@@ajs41 Dunno, does Atomic Kitten count? ;-)
@@Malc2169 twat lol
That phrase stuck with me too. Wasn't it from The Seer tour ? I designed a t-shirt with that on it back in the day.
The top half of a drum kit and crossed guitars like a skull and crossbones.
Just sat here on a Sunday morning, taking a break from ironing, watching this and shedding a tear............
Chin up. Xxx
I’m the same. But I’m rubbish at ironing xx lol
It becomes clear the first time you hear Big Country play just how much soul, energy and creative talent they had, but it's not until you actually SEE THEM in a live performance that your realise how technically brilliant they were too. Stuart Adamson in particular - the man is still one of the greatest guitarists I have ever seen or heard of.
Had this album on cassette on my first Walkman.
Played it until I just about knew every note.
Wish music was still like this.
Genius.
Chris Dunn
Me too: 83-84 was my Big Country Education
Lucky enough to see them live in '83. Best concert I have ever seen and this was the best song that night.
A brilliant song from a brilliant album by a brilliant band!!!
'A brilliant hat-trick' you might say... 😄 ..... 😉👍🏼
Brilliant
Wish these times could return sheer and utter brilliance .
Simply phenominal. An outstanding song that seems nowhere near as long as it is.
Magnificent guitars layered over a powerful yet agile rhythm section, sumptuously topped with a passionate vocal fortified by imaginatively descriptive lyrics.
A song of rare genius.
RIP Stuart Adamson.
Everyone of these guys is a brilliant musician. Love your vocals Stuart. Love them forever. The best hand ever.
Brilliant
That intro man. Love it
My all time favourite band, pure brilliance.
Brilliant
40 years later still fantastic 👍🏴
Class
Obviously, my favourite BC song - such awesome sound from all 4 of them.
I've listened to this so many times in the past week, trying to find why it shouldn't be my all time number 1 song and live performance. It is perfection. I can't live without it.......
Many of their live performances made the hair on the back of my neck only beaten by optimistic sounds of blackness
Couldn’t agree more Julie!
@@robert12011 2 years on and I feel just the same. Still gives me shivers.....
How the hell do you write a masterpiece like this. I used to think there must have been a ton of overdubs on the recorded version but they absolutely replicated it here in a live performance. Stuart makes it look effortless. I wish he got the recognition he deserved.
Yeh man it's stunning. .
Nope had idea why for it amazing isn't it..😊
(Probably one of the) Best live band ever.
Probably?!
Definitely one of the Best!
I love all the love this is getting. This is timeless. Also. The fields of fire performance. Holy shite.
The energy and commitment of a punk band.
The chops of a jazz band
I remember this well. The tv advent of a truly great group.
Loved this band from the early days - my children love them now, and have these Tube videos on eternal repeat. - they love Porrohman.
Dec 16th 2019 - eighteen years of winter sky.
Rest in peace.
Thanks so much for posting I'm going to drive my wife nuts watching this over the next month or so. They absolutely KILLED that song, what a F'ing fantastic band.
This is like a 6 minute work out for musicians
Sad thing is about 90% of the people watching that live in the studio just didn't appreciate what they were seeing / hearing.
Probably my favorite BC tune. But there are so many. Tony just rocks that Fender up so high-love it.
Is the Fender a standard strat? What is the colour? Is it aged cherry burst?
@@speedy692 - Stuart has a cherry burst Strat. Tony has a black Strat bass.
Simply genius, a work of art.
They still sound like nobody else.
I hope you found peace Stuart.
Absolute perfection. They couldn't sound better. Just mesmeric, the very best 4 musicians, at their peak.
I was never a Big Country fan but a few weeks ago found their Best of cd in amongst my collection and havent stopped playing it
Like a lot of things, the crowd didn’t realise what they were witnessing at the time. Brilliance.
The tension build through the long intro is almost painful. This song is about desperation and poverty, and it is perfect!
They knew not what they saw
Brilliant
What the musicist!!! Wonderful talented men! R.I.P. Stuart from Italy thanks for your music
Gone too soon Stuart, thanks for the music 🎶
Blows me away every time I hear it after all these years, invoke so much emotion. Thank you gentlemen for making my life better! Big Country yea!
What a tight unit they were! Incredible music!😎 miss music as good as this standard! Thanks Stuart! 🎸👌🏻👌 you rocked! 👍🏻
Got to see them live on four occasions before Stuart sadly passed away,God blessed you Stuart a rare talent as was the rest of this genius band, thank you for times i watched in amazementxxxxx
I still love this song and album. I bought the vinyl and cassette in 1983. Wore out 3 copies of each before CDs came out. The magic of Stuart making his guitar sound like electronic bagpipes is haunting.
Had the great privilege of seeing Big Country several times around this period. They always put on a brilliant show and got the crowd involved. This is one of their top songs from a classic album. I later went onto play in a band that did several BC covers and they were great songs to perform live and always well received by audiences. We lost Stuart Adamson too soon. A great Scot sorely missed.
20 yrs gone. Stuart you are a Legend
My first concert in 1984. What a great band. Miss Stuart. What a talented musician.
This song should be at page one of the musicians guide to hammering out utterly brilliant jams
Big Tony on that bass guitar is like a musical genius. He absolutely nailed it!!
Stuart is utterly amazing. Why did I only see these guys once.
But it was the best live action ever and 30 years later I've never seen better!!!
Brilliant
IMO, this is one of the best tracks by Big Country. Their musicianship shines through big time on so many levels.
One of my favorite bands of all times. As an American, I have no idea why the group wasn't a huge hit here in the States. Should have been, considering the crap that was being put out at the time. When a friend of mine played me some of their songs, I could not believe how good and original they sounded.
Very little airplay, that was the main culprit. When IABC was out, our local stations wouldn’t play it. However, they did play Look Away. Go figure.
The people running them behind the scenes were cokehead morons who didn't realize what they had on their hands. They comprehensively fucked them up time after time, and then blamed Stuart Anderson for taking refuge in booze - which must have in some small part due to his ongoing frustration with his managers' and record companies and bookers attempts to put a square peg in a round hole. He had a unique voice and they blew it. Meanwhile fucking Bono (and I'm from Dublin btw) is a trillionaire. It's never the talent that makes the mistakes.
@@thehebridaean3467 A terribly true reply - well said
Yes..someone needs to put the rest of us Americans on to big country
They were not huge in Australia either, but caught a wave and found a niche. Fab fab fab. I have loved them for years!
The originality, musicianship and technical brilliance of this cannot be overstated.
The Crossing - not one bad track. Even the stuff they cut was brilliant. Angle Park is a hidden classic.
Totally we all had it back then,,,,astounding album ,,,couldn’t get through the 80s without it
8 mins of pure gold . F n amazing song ...
THEY WERE SO GOOD . . . I SIMPLY COULD NOT BELIEVE IT.
Wow, 1983, running Cross Country, listening to this on my WalkMan on the bus ride back to Kent boarding school.
One of many great tracks from "The Crossing".
A Band on real form.
The absolute thrill and marvel of this song has stayed with me all these years. From the first day I bought this album when it was released in the US until today, this song still gives me the chills. As musicians each and every one of these guys are masters at what they do and with so much passion and precision.. This live version is as good if not better than the studio version.. Great music never dies, it just resonates in soul like a love sick child waiting for a kiss..
Masterpiece.
No one sounded like them before or has afterwards. They were unique.
Few bands are totally unique. Few bands are massively talented.
Big Country were both. The way they used their guitars is like no other band.
If there is an after life the first guy I'm looking up is big Stuart and buying him a pint. After ma da of course!
Hopefully they’re enjoying a pint together. And have one in for you. That would be good craic.
Such beautiful memories, undescribable
Tony Butler is in a trance... always a BC fan!
Hats of to this band they are better live than hearing it on record. Great live band.
Love, love Big Country! Miss u Stuart...RIP!
Absolutely brilliant, very very underrated band . RIP Stuart.
Brilliant
Just Brilliant and never tire of this track. Brings back memories. 😎👌
Skin loves them 😎
Brilliant
With so much insufferable dross marketed as music during the 1980's, this wonderful band came like a breath of fresh air - especially when seen live. This track has always been a personal favourite!!
the 80s music you call insufferable dross were still masterpieces compared to todays
My favourite band ever.
That intro. is the best long intro. to a song ever. And the guitar work is just utterly phenomenal. An extraordinary performance by the whole band. Sheer joy to watch.
Ahh man Stuart u genius...i love that rapid staccato muted rhythm he does before the lyrics kick in
Love, love, love this song! Just surreal.
Outstanding drumming.
all of them are outstanding
One of a kind people this is why i enjoy music so so so well and learned to play inruments as well completed love of music.
Back when music was better... Listened "The Crossing" today after so many years, and I still remembered most of the lyrics.
Stuart's gone, but rockin' them angels to be sure! Pure barry!
Like a relentless engine pounding on unstoppable. Love it.
Absolutely amazing band
Such an amazing, atmospheric song. It used to scare me me as a young lad.
Stuart Adamsom a great song writer. What a tight band. Love them.
Extraordinary band, alchemy was forged when these boys got together and Stuart the understated front man bossed it, RIP sir.
this is so so good, seen them back in the day, Stuart still so missed
I have to say I love all their songs this 1 particular is the uniqueness guitarist playing one in million ways different any other bass player ever in 53 years I'll say this much it's the top 1i could replay this song over over over all of them my brother was murdered and my dad's dead and I'm the only one alive my brother started this very name first time he wanted to go have fun and seen me as an equal not just kid sister means allot to me thank you all so so much😊
Somebody said they were a one hit wonder. I said "Put em up!" 👊🏼👊🏼💥
They are ignorant not every one knows everything their clearly stupid not to bright or cliche the sharpest tool in the shed.lol
The bag pipe guitar it's Brillant their originally from Scotland this is the first song my brother shared with me 42 years ago .
Wow i was almost 13 what wow over needed love and needed this bands songs for awhile now so I'll be repeating to listen feeling watching them all allot 😊 thank you (R.I.P. Randy-I )DECEASED ONLY SIBLING I LIVE&love YOU MY DEAREST BROTHER SMILES TO YOU..😊❤❤❤
Look into the work of Daniel Ash, of Bauhaus/Tones on Tail/Love and Rockets fame. He used the e-bow often to create that deeply atmospheric guitar tone.
My favourite Big country song played live, together with the storm
Saw the band 23 times in total, favourite band until I started following The Cult
Ha ha that's a great c.v❤ hope you got
Time off to check out some killing joke or bunnymen.
Love this group……. and this song !
Been stuck on this album/band for a few yrs now...always come back to them such great writing, vision, imagination, playing and abilty...for such young guys....fine Scottish gents 😎😎😎😎😎😮
I always loved it when Stuart roared Tshcar! Absolutely gutted when he passed away. Tony Butler’s bass is just so good and on point! 🏴
How we miss them to this day play the music still.Thankyou
I was fortunate enough to see Big Country live twice. They were both outstanding shows that I will never forget.
Love this song. Love Big Country. R. I. P Stuart x
