- When Ethiopia’s prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, came to power in 2018, he promised a new era of democratic reforms and an end to years of autocracy.
Political prisoners were freed, opposition parties were allowed to operate, and the new prime minister even won a Nobel Prize for securing peace with neighbouring Eritrea after decades of an uneasy armistice.
But since then, long-standing ethnic divisions have made the future of this complex country more uncertain.
Earlier this year, we went to find out why.

It’s either create political parties based on tribes and religions and give every community certain part of power or Amhara colonial settlers will grab all power, erase everyone else’s identity including culture, religion, language, flags and set on everyone else’s neck with a boot like they historically did. Amhara want centralized power system because they’ll be the only who will benefit from it. Their mindset is why take little when you can take everything.

The Amhara tribe and Orthodox Church are historically the strongest pillars and foundations of the nation as one and preserved the country. Unfortunately, the minority lead government in the past 30 years and their current successors are ethnic centric, Anti-Amhara, anti-Orthidox church. Tens of thousands of innocent Amhara people and Orthodox christians have been slaughtered by government sponsored fundamental islamic mobs and, racist Oromo fundamentalists and other anti-Amhara mobs. Ethiopia will disintegrate soon.... That is the dark truth!!!!

Khalid Abera yeah the land escape is beautiful. I’m supposedly from “eastern Ethiopia” which is truly is Western somalia under the Western aided “Ethiopia” (the quotation mark is because there’s no such thing as Ethiopia) military occupation, the parts of Ethiopia looks an alien land to me the highlands are green and beautiful. I will never go to that area as long as my region is under their direct oppression and military occupation but maybe in the distant future I can go visit once they leave my region and I hope it’s sooner rather than later.

Well said there!!! The Tigray defenders know that too, unfortunately the powerful people there are gambling with the lives of the poor. They are just trying to buy time that they don't have. It would have been great if they just put their difference aside and work for the better of the Ethiopian people but, as we know from history, African leader not only Ethiopian leaders are very corrupt, so much so they don't care of the outcome of their behaviors. As a result we see the genocide that is going on, specifically on Ethiopian Orthodox church followers and the Amara people, and we see the current government not even wanting to address the situation going on. Hence, division continues.

@David Leo Morley I don't like TPLF. But in this case they're just going ahead with the elections as originally scheduled. It's the federal gov't trying to delay elections so they can lock up and fragment the opposition. TPLF just isn't going along with their game because helping Abiy steal the election isn't in their interests. The PM is from my ethnic group. I can support him out of tribalism. But it doesn't benefit the country to replace one dictator with another. Release all the opposition and journalists from prison, stop restricting opposition movement and allow free and fair elections. That's the only solution.

An Ethiopian friend was telling me that if you are from one ethnic group and you're looking for a job in an area controlled by a different ethnic group then the likelihood of getting that job is very slim. He said that the state issued ID cards shows their ethnicity which is very troubling in my opinion. Basically the system is designed to ensure maximum division of the people. No wonder there is so much distraught towards each other.

I feel bad for the chaos and instabilities causing by few individuals like Jawaar and the likes. But I would have told them violence will never bring change but worsen and will cause thousands more will die for killing and hunger. Government is a powerful system and leader use that power to defend their seat. The only way to bring change is to sit together think together and wish good for the leaders and the people.

Jawar has to be held accountable for the death of 86 people in Burayu town and 200+ people in Oromia regions. He is preaching hate which lead many Qero (youths ) fight over something that they don’t even understand and doesn’t help anybody to go forward. I hope Qero will soon realise that Jawar has been used them and come to a term that help the nation to unite instead of fight. Hate in whatever shape of form doesn’t help and this nation knows better.

I must say it is a balanced analysis of the challenges Ethiopia is facing g at the moment.If any preaching or political activism under the name of any agenda starts to cost the life of decent citizens,anyone involved in that act should face the strong hand of justice; That is what is happening now;Ethiopia is an experiment of what a full uncontrolled democracy can lead to in a society no genuine democracy was practiced before.Political activists should be accountable to any action that leads to violence and disintegration of the nation.Shame the extreme political activists who can not think beyond their local agenda were not able to utilise the opportunity the reform brought up.
